Some friendly notes about CN names...

In the light of Wuthering waves, I want to make a few notes in regards to CN name pronunciation, because I have seen many people struggle with it, and the English voice over servely butchered it so bad.

So let's get into it.

First and for most, when it comes to Chinese, throw the English vowel phonetics out of the window.

Especially with names, we don't read them according to the romanization of the name, but rather the characters itself.

Jiyan, Ling Yang, Zhezhi, Yangyang. Etc

忌淡，凌陽，折枝，秧秧

I mean, obviously, lol. But, the reason I say this, is because I have seen quite a number of people make mistakes in pronuncing CN characters by using the romanji as a template to pronounce another word based on the similar spelling. While, the CN characters itself, has a different way of pronunciation.

[Note: CN names in Romanji don't mean anything to us, until we read the CN characters. Most of the time, we can make an educated guess on what the name is, given if the name is generic or easy i.e. Ga-ming, Zhongli, Hutao. In this context, Wuwa's names are a more unique, and harder to guess with just the Romanji.]

A great example of this is, Jiyan and Yangyang.

People always pronunce Jiyan's name incorrectly.

You might think I am being a little picky with this, because I am; for a good reason.

Most of the time, the "Yan" is pronunced incorrectly, and it's completely a far off pronunciation.

Ji (忌) Yan (淡)

Same goes for Yangyang.

Yang (秧) Yang (秧)

The "Yan" in Jiyan's name is the same character as the "Yan" in Genshin's character, Xinyan.

So the way Jiyan's "Yan" is pronunce is:

Y - ANN (as in the English name Ann-a without the 'a' at the end.)

For Yangyang, it's the "a" sound that people get wrong the most.

The "a" has like an "u" sound, like in the word, up. So pair it with "y", it almost makes a "ja" sound in German.

So essentially:

JA - NG JA - NG

Same goes for the "Yang" in Ling Yang's name, but do note that the "Yang"'s are not the same character, Yangyang (秧秧) & Ling Yang (凌陽).

So, if you want to get even more specific with the tones, then noted that Yangyang, and Ling Yang is pronunced in a different tone.

[Note: In Chinese there are a lot of instances where the CN character is different but the pronunciation is the same, or similar with tonal differences.]

Next, are the CN pinyin phonetic tips.

These aren't 100% fool prove, but, as mentioned before, one can't really know what CN characters is used until we see the actual character being use to then pronunce it correctly.

A good example is, Jinhsi.

Idk what and why the devs went with this Romanji, but I didn't really know how to pronunce it nor guess the word until I saw the CN character for it.

"Hsi" is (汐), which the pinyin/Romanji is "Xi"

Same with Baizhu from Genshin. Normally, the "Zhu" is pronunced as JU ( as in the English name, Ju-illie), but the character is actually pronunced as "Shou" (Sh-oo).

Anyway here are the tips:

"Zh" vs "J":

Zh- is pronunced with a "j" sound. Often times it's has an elongated sound. Ie. Zhong, Zhou, Zhi. Etc.

J- is also pronunced with a "j" sound, but the sound is often short. Ie. Jin, Jian, Jiang,

The "Q"

Q- is pronunced with a short "ch" sound.

The "e" and the "u"

I think the "e" and "u" sounds are the hardest for non CN speakers. Words like, Yu, yue, jue ke. Etc, are difficult because those type of sounds are not in the English language.

"u" is pronunced as "ü".

So, Qu (曲) is CH-Ü. Ganyu (甘雨) is G-uan Y-ü.

-ue, is a little tricky, it's pronounce as Ü-EH. "eh" as the anime expression of "Ehhh!". It would feel like a lip twister at the beginning but once you get the hang of it, you can put the sounds together.

Liyue is Li - yü-eh.

"e" is a little harder. The "e" by itself, without the "u", is prounced as "ugh" lmao. It's a short sound.

So, Keqing (刻晴) is K-ugh - ch-ing, Geshu Lin (歌舒 臨) is G-ugh - shü - Li-in.

There are probably loads more, but I am just going to do the ones where I see most in games like Genshin and Wuwa.

To top this all off, some (useless) CN name facts:

I don't really think spacing is a big deal in names. Sometimes it does help differentiate the surname and given name. But irl, when it comes to Romanji, the spacing and spelling is usually determined by the spelling on your birth certificate... So, if the nurse spelt your romanji name wrong... 😅😅😅

Sibling nameings are usually done in groups of brothers and sisters. So, let's take Artium Wing (lol) for example. His CN name is 左然 (Zuo Ran). So, if he has a younger brother, the parents would either keep the 左(Zuo), or the 然(Ran) for the next same sex sibling. So, Aritum (左然), and his younger brother, Alex (左右).

It is rare to have a compound surname in Han surnames. This includes, Ouyang (歐陽), Situ/Szeto (司徒), and of course Geshu (歌舒) (Geshu is a super rare name, and apparently the name is dead).

There are no standardised names in Chinese, like Joe, Sarah, Judy, Barbara, Matthew. Etc. There are similar names, and they might look the same when reading the Romanji, bit mostly are not the same.

That's it! I hope this helps, or at least explains a few things about CN names.

How to write them ♡(◕ᗜ◕✿)

The letter ش is very easy to write once you've mastered the letter س, it's written exactly the same way in all its forms but there are three dots over the "crown" part.

The letter غ is also easy once you've mastered the letter ع, it's exactly the same way but with a dot on top. But be careful with the medial part, it's not a cricle.

To make the shape easier to remember, the ــغـ in the middle resembles half a pacman. Behold the uncanny resemblance!

And finally, the letter ط, you start off by the "body", it looking a duck in a way, then you add the accessories "the stick" on top of it.

ش [Šīn]

This letter is easy, it's similar to the "sh" sound in English (Show) or the "Ş" sound in Turkish (iş) , or the "ch" sound in French (chaise).

غ [Ġayn]

This letter sounds like the Parisian "r" sound. It sounds as it you are gargling. It's coming from the top of your throat. (very close to where the خ is coming).

ط [Ṭāʾ]

This one is a bit tricky. It's the emphatic ت sound, as in the "thicker" sound of the letter. Try prouncing the letter ت but raise the lower part of your tongue (the part closer to the throat).

I was thinking about Evanstan, about mes petit colombes. I was also thinking about language. Being bilingual can be difficult, especially when you feel intense emotions. Can you tell where my mind has wandered, S?

“Yeah, sweets, ‘m gonna give it to you, gonna make my best boy feel good.” He said, and as he finally fucks his lover, Sebastian cries harder, begging in both English and Romanian, pleading with Chris to please go faster, harder, eventually just losing all ability to be coherent.

And when he finally comes with a shriek, going limp and soft in Chris’s arms, mumbling into his chest, little words about how lucky he is, how much he loves Chris, and how much he loves this. Chris comforts him, rubbing small shapes into his back, whispering that he loves him too, that he is so lucky to get to be here with Seb, and how he’s so proud of his good boy.

The true way to really speak the tongue of Dragons, for a non-dragon, is through a mix of Dragonspeak & whatever your home language is. In Ivy & Tiff's case, it is Dragonspeak mixed with English.

Dragonspeak relies a lot on old as fuck creatures, that have lived for a long time, so know all the content to the situation being spoken of, as it uses bare minimum context that only someone who has lived through the situation would know. By mixing it with the common tongue it fills the gasps for those that lack the context.

For example, if you wanted someone to speak of, let's say Hraesvelgr's beloved, in pure dragonspeak you would say: Osk[h] y e[h]sk herr[n](speak of love woman). Mixing it with english would become : Osk[h] y the wa[h] Hraesvelgr loved(speak of the one Hraesvelgr loved) or Osk[h] y Hraesvelgr's beloved(speak of Hraesvelgr's beloved). You could also just say in dragonspeak: Osk[h] y Shee[n](speak of Shiva), in which Shiva's name would just be prounced as Shiva instead of the dragonpseak version.

So as you can see, to make up for how much Dragonspeak relies on those who speak it to already know the context of what's being spoken of, normal english(or whatever your home tongue is) is mixing in to fill the gasps.

"Nuka you said something about a lion with werid accent"Bethan asked

"What did he look like?"asked Zira

Zira was hunting. in wasteland there was still food to be found just not as much as there used to be. Zira stopped to stalk Zebra it was quite old which made it a easy catch well it should of

Zira ran at the old Zebra with quick speed then pounced at the Zebra but it quickly ran from her then there was a sudden crunch .A sound was too close for comfort made Zira shiver.A dark figure stood over her with Zebra in its mouth.

"This must be yours"The lion said with accent that Zira only heard once before and this wasn't Scar

she stood up and took the Zebra

"Thank you"said Zira

"Mrs please let me walk you home,and help carry your Zebra"The lion said

Zira laughed at how he said Zebra and the fact that treat her like proper lioness not just a cub bearer.

"Whats so funny?"the lion asked

"You prounce Zebra like to has h in it,Zeh-bra"Zira laughed

"and you prounce it like Zee-bra" The lion responed.

The both kept laughing at each other until the went back to the cave where Flower was waiting for Zira to come back with walked in first followed by the mysterious lion that had Zebra in stared at the lion that walk in a red mane,green eyes,brown fur her jaw dropped she couldn't get to grips. This is the same cub that Scar adopted. Didn't he die from same stampede that killed Simba and Mufasa.

As an italian, watching Gotham sometimes can be a big "ugh". Don't misunderstand me, Gotham has far from the only bad or the worst representation of italian culture or, to be more honest, italian mafia. I usually try to avoid foreign products that treat these themes, but watching Gotham is a sacrifice I am willing to make if it means I get to see Oswald Cobblepot.

At this point, just to heal my soul and cope with some of the things I see in the show, I pretend every single "italian" character in Gotham is just pretending to be italian because they think the other Gotham criminals will find them more scary and will respect them more. They don't know much about Italian culture, but other criminals in Gotham know even less.

Carmine Falcone is at least a character I can see being raised. And I say "raised" and not simply "be" because personally, if he actually lived in Italy, I don't think he'd accept his name to be costantly mispronounced. In the show they call him in a way that sounds like "Car" and the word "mine". In italian his name sounds a bit more like "Car", "me" (like the personal pronoun), "ne" (like in the word nepotism).

Carmine, prounced like Car-me-ne.

Like okay they also slander his surname by not pronouncing the last "e" (it would be Falco-ne, with the same "ne" pronunciation as before), but mispronouncing his first name is like a personal thing, it's on a different level.

I fully believe Maroni is NOT italian and literally just pretending to be to appear more imposing. First of all, he has the vibes of someone who'd do something like that. Second, his favourite liquor is an italian delicacy called Madre de Dios?????? SIR THAT'S SPANISH. EXACTLY WHO WOULD CALL IT LIKE THAT, IN ITALY. ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING YOU SAID IT'S FROM AN OLD CONVENT OF ITALIAN MONKS???? LIKE IT'S NOT EVEN SOME NEW ALCOHOL BRAND TRYNG BE COOL WITH FOREIGN NAMES?????

Italy has historically been through many dominations from other countries, also Spain; I am not saying it's impossible that there is an italian liquor with that name, but it is highly improbable.

And, if you think about my perspective, isn't it funny to think Maroni is straight up pretending to be italian and everybody is falling for that shit, like Oswald Cobblepot freaking buys a bottle of Madre De Dios thinking he is so smart because he did his homework on Maroni's tastes but he didn't manage to notice Madre De Dios are spanish words???? In America, in which Spanish is supposed to be the second language???? No shade to Gotham I just think my interpretation of the show is funnier and cooler plus culturally accurate.

And then, look.

Italian surnames can be strange. Even names. Names can be weird in every language. There are people in English called Dick, which we all know also means penis.

So, I am not saying it's not realistic, but I am saying it is funny the word "Maroni", in some italian dialect, means testicles. I am not saying it's an impossible surname to have, I am saying it's funnier, for me, to think this guy had to choose a false italian surname and accidentally chose a word for "testicles".

I am still watching the show, so I still have to see this Sofia Falcone people talk about, but for now there is just one person who passes the italian test, one character I can say "yep, she's italian".

And it's the lady who owns the bar is which Oswald organized the fake assassination of Maroni. The lady for which Oswald "lose the fingers" of the guitarist who was dating her niece.

She is the only truly italian character, and when Oswald tries to buy her place she says in Italian something like "Questo è pazzo", which translates in "This one is crazy".

She is the only character I would confirm to be 100% italian. The rest? It's all marketing, like the Victoria's Secret scam (which, if you know about, it either means you're really into fashion or, hey, when's the last time you rewatched The Social Network?).
