Right as I’m putting on my director cap again in a big professional way, one of the directors and educators that really helped shape my career has passed. Big artist emotions right now.
#life is weird#passion is weird#careers are weird#he gave me my first professional acting gig#a paid 4 production contract working alongside equity actors#one of whom has since made his Broadway debut#and it was a wonderful experience#but my biggest takeaway was the first inkling that performance maybe wasn’t a sustainable pursuit for me#I didn’t fully realize that for another couple years#but without that series of experiences I wouldn’t have the unique position I do now#where I basically inherited the rough semblance of a niche theatre company#and am working so hard to develop and professionalize it#even with my other experience directing and teaching I don’t think I would really feel confident directing on this scale if I hadn’t had#the opportunity and experience of being a company member on the scale of the job he gave me#and he really gave me that job#I didn’t just attend an audition#I was in a production he directed at my college#and at the end of rehearsal one night#he said ‘I’m directing falsettos this summer. I want you to audition for Cordelia.’#and I auditioned I was cast as Cordelia#but I was also cast as a principal in another show and ensemble in 2 more that season#it gave me a taste of theatre outside the fishbowl of my department#and though he is not my favorite director I’ve ever worked with#seeing him manage a company of 50 people with 4 productions In concurrent rehearsals#set an example of what directing PEOPLE means#not just the performance but the individuals the egos the strengths the weaknesses#and actually now that I think of it the last time I saw him was when I had just gotten this job#and I think he said something kind of exactly validating everything I’ve said here#I won’t speak ill of the dead so I’ll say this: I didn’t always like working with him but I have immense respect for him#and those are the people you learn the most from

The Key to Sustainable Business Growth: How Consulting Services Can Boost Your Revenue
In today’s fast-paced and competitive marketplace, businesses are under constant pressure to innovate, grow, and streamline operations. However, the journey toward sustainable revenue growth is often complex and requires specialized expertise. Consulting services have become a valuable resource for organizations aiming to navigate these challenges and achieve their business goals. In this blog, we’ll explore how specialized consulting services can fuel business growth and provide strategic support in critical areas.
Driving Revenue Growth through Consulting
One of the most critical aspects of business success is finding ways to continually increase revenue while optimizing operations. Revenue growth consulting is a specialized service that helps businesses identify new opportunities and implement effective strategies to maximize earnings. By analyzing current revenue streams and assessing market trends, consultants provide tailored advice on how to expand sales channels, improve pricing models, and enhance product offerings. Businesses that invest in revenue growth consulting can achieve long-term stability and avoid stagnation in an ever-evolving economic environment.
Business Expansion Strategies for Success
Expanding a business involves much more than merely increasing operations; it requires strategic planning, market understanding, and resource management. Professional consultants offer in-depth business expansion strategies, helping companies identify new markets, assess the competitive landscape, and define clear growth goals. Whether a company is looking to expand domestically or internationally, consulting services ensure that businesses take calculated steps, avoid common pitfalls, and achieve scalable growth. An expert consultant can develop a roadmap that takes into account everything from market entry to supply chain management, providing a holistic approach to expansion.
The Importance of Market Research Services
Successful business decisions are built on a foundation of accurate and comprehensive information. Market research services are an integral part of the consulting process, providing businesses with critical insights into customer behavior, industry trends, and competitive dynamics. By leveraging market research, companies can develop products and services that align with customer needs and market demand. Consultants use various data collection methods, such as surveys, focus groups, and data analysis, to provide actionable insights. This empowers businesses to make informed decisions that lead to enhanced market positioning and better ROI.
Streamlining Operations with Production Management Consulting
In addition to identifying growth opportunities, businesses need to ensure that their operations run smoothly and efficiently. Production management consulting helps businesses optimize their production processes to reduce costs, improve quality, and increase efficiency. From supply chain optimization to workflow automation, consultants help companies refine their operational models to produce better results with fewer resources. This type of consulting is particularly valuable for manufacturing firms and businesses with complex operational processes, as it allows them to stay competitive while maintaining high standards of quality.
Strengthening Financial Health with Balance Sheet Maintenance Services
Financial health is the backbone of any successful business, and maintaining a solid balance sheet is essential for long-term stability. Balance sheet maintenance services, offered by financial consultants, ensure that a company’s assets, liabilities, and equity are well managed. These services involve evaluating financial statements, optimizing capital structure, and identifying potential risks. By working with consultants, businesses can ensure they have accurate financial reporting, enabling them to make sound financial decisions and avoid unnecessary liabilities. This strengthens a company’s financial foundation and prepares it for future growth and investment opportunities.

The Apple Marketing Philosophy
“Empathy

"Legislative momentum against PFAS has surged this year, as at least 11 states enacted laws to restrict the use of “forever chemicals” in everyday consumer products or professional firefighting foam.
The legislation includes bans on PFAS in apparel, cleaning products, cookware, and cosmetic and menstrual products. Meanwhile, lawmakers in some states also passed measures that require industries to pay for testing or cleanup; order companies to disclose the use of PFAS in their products; and mandate or encourage the development of PFAS alternatives, according to Safer States, an alliance of environmental health groups focused on toxic chemicals.
In total this year, at least 16 states adopted 22 PFAS-related measures, according to the group. Since 2007, 30 states have approved 155 PFAS policies, the vast majority of them in the past five years.
The thousands of chemicals categorized as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, do not naturally break down and are found in the blood of 97% of Americans. Some PFAS compounds can harm the immune system, increase cancer risks and decrease fertility...
Earlier this year, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released new standards limiting PFAS in drinking water. Water systems have five years to comply with the rules. Even before the EPA action, 11 states had set their own limits on PFAS in drinking water, starting with New Jersey in 2018.
Water utilities and chemical manufacturers are challenging the new EPA standards. But states also are heading to the courthouse: So far, 30 states have sued PFAS manufacturers or key users for contaminating water supplies and other natural resources, according to Safer States...
Sarah Doll, national director of Safer States, said one reason states have been so successful in enacting PFAS limits is that more companies are willing to stop using the chemicals.
“When California restricted PFAS in textiles, all of a sudden you saw companies like REI saying, ‘We can, we’re going to do that. We’re going to move to alternatives,’” Doll said.
In Vermont, state lawmakers in April unanimously approved a measure banning the manufacture and sale of PFAS in cosmetics, menstrual products, incontinence products, artificial turf, textiles and cookware.
“The same as everyone else, like Democrats, we want to make sure that we remove PFAS and get it out of products as soon as we can,” said Vermont Republican state Rep. Michael Marcotte, who said his district includes cosmetics manufacturer Rozelle Cosmetics, in Westfield.
Democratic state Sen. Virginia Lyons, the chief sponsor of the Vermont bill, said it is particularly important to get PFAS out of products that are essential to consumers.
“There are some consumer products where you can say, ‘I don’t need to buy that, because I don’t want PFAS,’” Lyons said. “But it’s really tough to say that [about] a menstrual product.”
California’s latest PFAS measure, which Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed last month, specifically bans the use of PFAS in menstrual products. Democratic Assemblymember Diane Papan, the author of the bill, said it was particularly strong because it covers both intentional and unintentional uses of PFAS, so “manufacturers will have to really be careful about what comes in their supply chain.”
While more states enact laws focused on specific products, Maine is preparing to implement the world’s first PFAS ban covering all consumer goods. The Maine law, which is scheduled to take effect in 2030, will include exceptions for “essential” products for which PFAS-free alternatives do not exist. Washington state has also taken a sweeping approach by giving regulators strict timelines to ban PFAS in many product categories.

Chrysler Building, New York
The client’s voice cut through the room like a blade. “I hired your company because I believed you were professionals. You promised to deliver a solution by now, but all I see is a half-baked product with a mile-long list of issues. How can I possibly take your team seriously?”
James Buchanan Barnes, CEO of Barnes Tech Solutions, kept his jaw tight as he leaned forward, attempting to salvage what he could. “We understand your frustration,” he said, casting a quick glance at Y/n, the company’s CTO, sitting beside him. “We’ve hit a few roadblocks, but we’re confident we can resolve this quickly with the right—”
The client held up a hand. “No more excuses, Barnes.” They fixed a hard look on both of them, voice icy. “Three days. That’s all you get. Either you deliver exactly what we need, or we’re done here. No payment, no future business.”
The client didn’t wait for a response, gathering their papers with a look of finality before sweeping out of the conference room, leaving James and Y/n in silence. They sat there for a moment, both stewing in the frustration and tension of the encounter.
“Well,” Y/n muttered, finally breaking the silence, “that went well.”
James shot her a look, a scowl tugging at his features. “Don’t start, Y/n. This is exactly why I said we should’ve focused more on the testing phase.”
She crossed her arms, glaring right back at him. “Focused on testing? You barely gave me enough time to build the initial code, let alone test it properly.”
He huffed, standing up with a tense shrug. “If I didn’t push you, we’d still be stuck in development. But maybe you prefer taking things slow, dragging your feet?”
She pushed back her chair and stood up, her face flushed with irritation. “Dragging my feet? Barnes, if you had any idea how hard I’ve been working on this project…”
“Hard enough to almost lose us a client?” he shot back.
They stared each other down, both brimming with frustration. She was about to retort, but he started to walk away, loosening his tie as he did. She noticed his hand move to the top button of his shirt, undoing it with a casual flick that made her breath catch. The first button opened, a sliver of skin peeking out, and her eyes were drawn to it, lingering a little too long before she snapped herself out of it.
“You coming?” He asked, turning slightly towards her with a slight smirk on his face.
Did he just catch her looking? His smirk was faint, but she could feel his gaze on her, the hint of amusement there that made her blush despite herself. She shook her head and tried to brush the thought away as she followed him out of the room.
In her office, they set up their laptops at her desk, side by side, both working in tense silence as they began reviewing the project’s remaining issues. The air was thick with unresolved friction, each of them trying to avoid any eye contact, but occasionally, James' gaze would drift to her, taking in the focused, determined look on her face.
As they settled into the work, their bickering continued, every small detail an excuse to challenge each other’s opinions.
“If we’d just skipped that last feature in the initial build, we’d be a lot closer to what the client actually wanted,” she huffed, tapping at her laptop with more force than necessary.
James scoffed. “That feature was the whole reason they were excited in the first place.”
Y/n rolled her eyes. “Well, then maybe you should’ve double-checked what they actually wanted instead of chasing every shiny idea they suggested.”
“Oh, so now it’s my fault?” he asked, pulling off his suit jacket in frustration. He tossed it onto the back of a chair, loosening his tie and rolling up his sleeves as he glared down at her. “It’s not like you ever told me we didn’t have the resources to support it.”
But her words stalled, eyes betraying her as they strayed to the way he’d rolled his sleeves past his elbows, exposing the firm, lean muscle of his forearms. She swallowed, her thoughts briefly scattering as her cheeks warmed.
James caught the way she suddenly went quiet, raising a brow at her. “Something wrong?” he asked, his tone a touch smug when he noticed the way her gaze flickered down and back up.
She quickly looked away, feigning indifference as she typed out a few lines of code. “Nothing at all,” she said, voice tight. “Let’s just… finish this thing.”
He smirked but didn’t push, though he was starting to feel a strange shift himself. Watching her in her element, every subtle movement and frustrated sigh, he felt his own irritation beginning to fade.
An hour later, they found themselves slowly starting to agree on things, the edge in their voices softening as they adjusted parts of the project together.
“Actually,” he muttered, leaning over her shoulder, “you might be right about that last module. It would probably run smoother without it.”
She glanced up, her expression a little surprised. “Did James Barnes just agree with me?”
He rolled his eyes, though there was a faint smile tugging at his lips. “Don’t get used to it.”
They shared a small, reluctant smile before diving back into the work, slowly aligning on solutions without the need to argue each point. As the hours went on, the initial hostility between them started to feel like a distant memory.
Later, they hit a breakthrough on a particularly tricky piece of code, and she couldn’t help the triumphant smile that spread across her face. “See? I told you it’d work.”
He chuckled, genuinely impressed as he met her gaze. “Alright, fine. You win this round, CTO.”
She felt her pulse quicken at the warmth in his voice, her defenses slipping further as she returned his gaze. “You’re not too bad yourself, CEO,” she murmured, allowing the rare compliment to pass between them.
With every line of code, every small decision they made together, the tension shifted. What had started as frustration and competitive energy had softened into something unspoken, something that simmered between them with each quiet moment they shared.
Around midnight, James leaned closer, scanning a line of code on her screen. “There’s an extra bracket here,” he murmured, his voice softer than usual. He didn’t move back, his presence just inches away, warm and solid. She could feel his breath against her cheek, and her pulse quickened.
Her voice came out softer than she intended. “I, uh… I see it. Thanks.”
The silence lingered, neither of them pulling back. She glanced up and met his gaze, her heart pounding as she realized just how close they were. For a split second, she thought he might kiss her, and her breath caught, but then he cleared his throat, straightening up as if the moment hadn’t happened.
“Right,” he said, though his voice was slightly rough. “Let’s keep going.”
They worked through the night, every so often stealing glances when the other wasn’t looking. And each time she glanced his way, she’d catch little details she hadn’t noticed before—the way his brow furrowed in concentration, the way his hand absently rubbed the back of his neck when he was frustrated. There was something almost endearing about it.
At one point, James got up to grab them coffee, and when he returned, he held out a mug with a slight, almost shy smile. “Thought you could use this.”
She took it, their fingers brushing for a moment, sending an unexpected warmth up her arm. “Thanks, Barnes. Didn’t think you’d be the coffee-fetching type.”
“Only for you,” he replied, his voice playful, but his eyes held something softer, something that made her heart skip a beat.
She’d always thought of him as brash, a bit arrogant, but there was a quiet intensity to him now, a focus that made her feel a strange pull in her chest. He wasn’t just the CEO who threw orders around; he was actually invested in making things work, pushing just as hard as she was.
She cleared her throat, trying to distract herself. “You know,” she said carefully, glancing at him, “for all the arguing, you’re… you’re actually a pretty good CEO.”
He looked up at her, a hint of surprise in his eyes. “You mean that?”
“Yeah,” she said, feeling a little heat rise to her cheeks. “You know how to get things done. You push people, but… it’s because you actually care about the company.”
A small smile tugged at his lips, softening his usually sharp expression. “Thanks. But honestly, Y/n, if anyone’s pulling this project together, it’s you. You’re the best CTO I’ve ever seen—our tech wouldn’t even be half of what it is without you.”
She felt her heart skip a beat at his words, warmth creeping up her neck. “I… didn’t know you thought that,” she murmured, her gaze dropping for a moment.
He leaned in slightly, his eyes holding hers with a strange intensity. “I mean it,” he said, his voice low. “You’re brilliant, Y/n. Sometimes I wonder what we’d do without you.”
Her breath caught at the way he looked at her, a deep, lingering gaze that was almost… tender. She could feel her pulse quickening, her heart pounding in a way she hadn’t expected. She swallowed, feeling the tension between them shift, morphing into something that felt a lot less like animosity and a lot more like anticipation.
As the hours ticked on and the city lights outside dimmed into early morning, Y/n leaned back in her chair, stretching her tired arms above her head. “Almost there,” she murmured, exhaustion heavy in her voice. “Just a few more adjustments.”
James had loosened another button by now, and her gaze flickered to the open collar of his shirt. It exposed just enough to be distracting—the slight glimpse of toned muscle, his collarbone, the warm skin beneath, the reflection of a gold chain she just noticed that he was wearing. She tried to tear her eyes away, but the sight had her more breathless than she’d care to admit.
He noticed her lingering stare, and a slight smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth. “Something on your mind, Y/n?” he asked, his voice lower, more teasing.
She cleared her throat, brushing it off. “Just… making sure you’re still awake,” she mumbled, hoping he couldn’t hear the sudden breathlessness in her voice.
He tilted his head, eyes fixed on her in that intense way that always made her heart skip a beat. “Awake—and noticing a few things myself,” he said quietly, his gaze drifting over her face, then her lips.
The air between them shifted, thickening with an unspoken tension. She could feel his closeness, the warmth radiating from him as he leaned in, just a little. She held her breath, waiting, unsure if he’d actually go through with it.
Then, as if making a decision, he reached out, brushing a strand of hair from her face. His fingers lingered by her cheek, his gaze dropping to her mouth as he edged closer. Her pulse raced, her heart pounding louder than any words.
Before she could second-guess the moment, his lips met hers, warm and unexpectedly soft, his hand cupping her cheek as he drew her in. It was gentle at first, tentative, as though he was testing the waters—but the moment she leaned into him, his kiss deepened, sending a shiver down her spine.
She felt her heart catch in her chest, and she knew that whatever this was between them, it was something she couldn’t ignore any longer.
When he finally pulled back, his forehead rested against hers, his eyes searching hers with a soft, almost shy smile. “You have no idea how long I’ve wanted to do that,” he murmured, a hint of vulnerability in his voice.
She laughed softly, a little breathless, her hands still resting on his shoulders. “Guess we’ve both been hiding things, then.”
He smiled, his fingers tracing along her jaw. “Maybe we’re better off working together than fighting, after all.”
She smirked, playfully nudging him. “Don’t think this means I’m going easy on you in the next project, Barnes.”
He chuckled, wrapping an arm around her waist. “Wouldn’t expect anything less, Y/n.” And with that, he leaned in and kissed her again, as the night slowly turned to dawn, the rivalry between them finally fading into something infinitely sweeter.

everyone suggesting alternatives for Photoshop is inevitably not actually using most of the Photoshop functionality, which to be fair is probably the vast majority of the potential Photoshop userbase.
the reason Photoshop has been industry standard for 30 years is that it does almost everything and has almost always done almost everything. it has had a few weird slow adoptions, for example it didn't support basic live mirroring while drawing until the 2010s (ish). it didn't have recovery saves or auto saving until about then. it's never been the absolute last word in real media synthesis, that was Corel Painter for years and now I think CSP is probably the king. illustrator is better at vectors. etc. but Photoshop can do all of those things well enough to prepare a professional grade, print-ready artwork from RAW file to layout to text to retouching to total from-scratch illustration, in one step, with layer and channel separation, multiple types of masking, adjustment layers, lossless file object placement, vector text transformation including all standard print layout tools like kerning, like spacing, comprehensive font support, and both true font variation and faux transformation like fake bold and fake italic. and clients and print workflows are expecting PSD files and file preparation for this reason. Krita, as an example of a popular program suggested as an "alternative to Photoshop" which I have used for hundreds of hours to do professional and personal work, is great for drawing but has a completely unusable text engine, you can't make a webcomic with speech bubbles easily and quickly in Krita. it was like pulling teeth even trying to put "BABY SLUT" on my Lethal Company skin with Krita. but you can lay out an entire magazine in Photoshop in an afternoon, and people do (print preparation is whole other topic I'm not saying vogue is prepared solely in Photoshop, it isn't, I'm saying you CAN do it in Photoshop)
I have never paid for an Adobe product, I am not pro Photoshop, I am pro getting my work done. I would absolutely love for there to be an actual Photoshop alternative, but there isn't. there are individual alternatives for individual features of Photoshop, and if you are working in a limited professional scope or you just want a drawing program or just want to make your webcomic or just want to do pixel art then one or two programs will replace Photoshop for you. everyone who, like me, has to do RAW editing, fashion retouching, print and web layout, pure digital illustration, vector illustration, text and graphic design, and all the rest of the crap I have to do in a format that's accepted by publishers and the rest of the various workflow destinations it's just not realistic. which is why it's great that Photoshop is completely trivial to pirate at any stage of its development you care to install, including versions prior to the introduction of the AI crap, the cloud crap, and the rest of the crap no one serious is actually using unless their manager is forcing them to

could you talk more on eds and biopolitics?
sure, so this is broad strokes and it's also worth reiterating that the energy deficit characteristic of EDs can have a lot of different causes besides intentional food restriction—food insecurity is a huge and underrecognised factor here but there are many others. so when i talk about intentional restriction and the desire to be thin / lose weight, i'm not suggesting these are universal characteristics or causes of EDs.
anyway though, in the context of discussing these things, and particularly the relationship between 'diet culture' and EDs, a perennial frustration to me is that i often hear people fall back on the idea that the desire to be thin comes about as a result of the beauty standards perpetuated in mass media, fashion adverts, &c, without any subsequent interrogation of why it is that beauty itself is now so heavily dependent on thinness. after all, plenty of people have pointed out this is not a universal; beauty varies in different times and places, what is described or depicted as beautiful in historical records doesn't necessarily have much overlap with today's hegemonic standards, and so forth.
so when historicising this phenomenon it becomes very clear that the euro/anglo standard of thinness as beauty is, one, part of the ideological apparatus justifying colonialism thru the creation of race and white supremacy. sabrina strings and da'shaun harrison have written on this. two, the thin ideal is also inextricably tied up in medical discourses defining the ideal body as one that is economically productive, with the promise being that if the populace can be transformed into 'healthy',*** useful, hardworking citizens, the state benefits. control of bodyweight is therefore certainly a means of demonstrating one's supposed self-control, moral discipline, &c, but it is also a demand expressed in medical terms: these two discourses merge and overlap, and are both part of the capitalist state's transformation of its citizenry into a biological resource that can be controlled, managed, and exploited to bourgeois ends (profit): hence, biopolitics.
(***the story of how 'health' itself comes to be so dependent on thinness is obviously a critical piece of all this but this post is long as shit already so suffice it to say that this conflation is also not obvious, necessary, universal, &c &c)
medico-political discourses in the 19th century tended to talk about the dangers of both over- and under-weight more than what we hear now; similarly, if you think about something like wilbur atwater's calorie-value charts, these were explicitly intended to guide labourers to the most calorie-dense foods, because to atwater the central danger to be avoided was starvation among the workforce. these days in wealthy countries like the us, you are much more likely to hear about weight management in the context of demands to reduce; this is of course following moves like the WHO declaring an 'obesity epidemic' in 1997, and the rise in the usa of more explicitly nationalist, militaristic weight-loss rhetoric in the post-9/11 era.
however, my position is that these demands for thinness, and the beauty standard that follows and justifies them, are not a departure from earlier 19th- and 20th-century scientific nutrition advice, just an evolution that, for a multitude of reasons (politics, medical professional interests, insurance company practices, &c) has simply come to focus more on the ostensible economic and national threat posed by fatness. the underlying logic bears the biopolitical throughline: the state has, or ought to have, an interest in enforcing the health of its population, and as part of this demands that you the individual surveil and alter your weight according to the scientific guidelines du jour.
this is fertile ground for the development of what, in extreme form, we regard as ED pathology. first, because even the most purely 'health'-motivated individual engaging in the required degree of bodily monitoring and caloric restriction is liable to respond to energy deficit in ways that can become diagnosably distressing. second, because the morals of 'health' are never far from standards of beauty; thinness is sold in overtly profitable ways (the diet and weight-loss industries) and furthermore, our idea of beauty is often a kind of post hoc justification for the thinness already being demanded by state and medical authorities. which is really just to say, beauty is part of the ideological superstructure both resulting from and invoked as a justification for the material conditions of capitalist biopolitics. again this is very broad strokes, but imo it is a much more useful framework to understand EDs than simply presenting them as a result of desiring thinness because it is glorified in The Media, because... reasons (essentially the rené girard model, lol).

A/N. this chapter is basically just like, establishing relationships and character development. WE'LL GET INTO THE JUICY STUFF SOON I PROMISEEEEEEE
“Genuinely, if you don’t put your phone down, I’m going to lose it.”
“Jesus, grandpa. It’s not that serious. As soon as Yunho and San show up, I’m out of here.” You chuckled as you tossed your phone behind you onto the couch in Hongjoong’s studio. You’d been in his studio for at least two hours at that point, and you were so very bored. He had called you into the studio at 8 a.m. that morning. Which was at least three hours earlier than you intended to be up. He didn’t need you to work on anything that day- he just wanted the company. Which you were happy to provide. But for as long as you could remember, he’s always hated it when people stared at their phones while in his studio.
You've known Hongjoong for a long time- since before he became a trainee. And to be honest, you definitely wouldn’t be where you are in life if it weren’t for him. You met him when you first moved to Seoul when you were just sixteen. You didn’t really have any goals, you just wanted independence. When you first met Hongjoong, you were working in a cafe, which was one of two jobs you had at the time. You started to notice him coming in almost every day, sitting in the corner, headphones on, working on something clearly very serious for hours at a time. Sometimes, he would even be there until you closed. Usually, he wouldn’t even order anything- he was just there for the free Wi-Fi.
After a few weeks of him coming in, you started giving him the free coffees that you got on your shift. When you would place the coffee on the table he was sitting at, he would look up, give you a quick smile, and immediately return to whatever he was doing. One night, after about a month and a half of him coming in, you were closing the cafe by yourself, and noticed Hongjoong staring blankly at his laptop screen. You decided that was the night you were going to finally make a friend in this city. You walked up to him and stood by his table for a solid forty five seconds before he slowly looked up and removed his headphones.
At first, he thought you were just going to kick him out since the cafe had closed, but was surprised when you asked him about what he was working on whenever he came into the cafe. He told you about his music, that he wanted to be a professional musician, and that he was working on a mixtape to send in to different companies. The two of you sat for at least another two hours just listening to all the different songs he had been working on. His eagerness and ambition to do what he loved really inspired you- it made you want to make something of yourself.
So over the next several months, whenever you were closing the cafe by yourself, you and Hongjoong would sit together and work on his mixtape. He taught you the ins and outs of the different programs that he used, and you offered whatever constructive suggestions you could. One day, Hongjoong came into the cafe, grinning ear to ear as he ran up to the front counter and gleefully told you that his mixtape had gotten him accepted into a company. After your shift, you treated him to dinner, and made him promise to keep in contact while he was a trainee. He accepted the promise under the condition that you help him produce his first album.
Hongjoong taught you everything you knew about production, and now you were one of the most sought-after producers in the industry. Ever since Ateez debuted, you’d been working with him a lot more in the studio, and you’d gotten somewhat close with a few of his members- mainly Mingi, Seonghwa, and Wooyoung. You would always be thankful for Hongjoong, not just because your friendship with him was the catalyst for your career, but because if it weren’t for him teaching you how to make music, you wouldn’t have met your boyfriend.
You met Felix backstage at a music show that Hongjoong had invited you to as a guest. You were standing by yourself in front of a screen that showed the stage, watching your best friend and his group absolutely kill it onstage. After their last song finished, you realized you weren’t the only person watching the screen as you heard a set of hands next to you clapping excitedly. You turned to look who it was and saw Felix standing beside you. You knew who Felix was- you had worked with Bangchan, Changbin, and Han once or twice before, but never met the rest of Stray Kids. You didn’t think much of him at first to be completely honest- it wasn’t love at first sight or anything, but once you started working with the producer unit of Stray Kids more, you started seeing Felix more frequently, and before long, you two were together.
At first, no one knew about yours and Felix’s relationship. Partially because you weren’t sure how long it was going to last, and partially because you knew what it would do to both of your careers if the two of you were found out. But of course before long, the rest of his group found out, and the two of you told your families about your relationship. Now here you were three years after the start of your relationship, and even though almost all of your friends knew, his company was still none the wiser.
The door to Hongjoong’s studio creaked open, and the two of you turned your heads to see Yunho and San coming through the door. Yunho greeted you with a friendly wave and a “Hello”, while San gave you a small smile. You rose from your chair as soon as the two men got settled into the couch. Stretching your arms above your head with a groan, you turned to your best friend, who was still staring at his monitor- you weren’t even sure if he had noticed the presence of his two members.
“Joong, I’m gonna head out.”
“Huh?” He hummed, still not tearing his eyes from the screen. You took his headphones off his head, which prompted him to finally turn to look at you.
“Yunho and San are here, I’m gonna leave.”
“Oh, okay. Good.” He turned back to his screen, placing his headphones back over his ears. You rolled your eyes at your friend, but you knew better than to bug him any farther while he was “in the zone”. You turned to face the two men sitting on the couch and shook your head in amusement at them.
“Are you gonna be back tomorrow?” San asked as he moved to take the seat next to Hongjoong that you had been seated in before.
“Probably not. Bangchan asked me to come by JYP tomorrow.”
“Ah, bummer.” He responded, spinning around in the chair to face the same screen that Hongjoong had been glued to for the past several hours.
You bid your goodbyes to Yunho and San, not even bothering to try to get Hongjoong’s attention. On your drive home, your mind wandered to Felix. You loved Felix. Obviously. How could you not? The two of you had been together for three happy years, three years of hardly any fights, any disagreements, or any jealousy. But as guilty as you felt for thinking it, you sometimes wondered how long you would last. How long could you make it before someone in his company found out? How long before the excitement of your relationship fizzled out and all that was left was the tedious monotony of most long-term relationships? You hadn’t realized that you were on autopilot to Felix’s apartment until you had pulled up outside the building. You smiled as the realization that while your mind was on Felix, your body had brought you to him dawned on you. Maybe everything would be okay. Maybe even if you two were forced apart, you would always find your way back to him.
