Mass Effect: The Official Cocktail Book (Part 1 of 2)
[you can get the book here]
Drink, food, and other lore blurbs from this book. (The book also contains the associated real-world recipes and photography thereof. This post only contains the in-world lore segments).
this post is Part 1 of 2. Rest of post is under a cut due to length. [Link to Part 2]
If there's a particular drink/food you'd like to see the recipe and or picture for, lmk.
Introduction: Written in 2184 CE by âAmbree TâSiaâ, identity classified Itâs a big galaxy out there. Numerous planets and their inhabitants, all jockeying for power, prestige, and precedence. With these competing agendas often clashing, seldom mixing, sometimes you need a swig of something stiff to get you to the next Relay. Well, youâve come to the right place. And me? Nine hundred years (give or take) and a variety of careers and aliases later, I hustle my way through the galaxy by the name of Ambree TâSia these days. Itâs the one fiction that allows me to keep the rest of the story honest â with varying degrees, depending on the situation. What I can share is this: a former asari huntress, I left the military bureaucracy to lead a small covert unit of ex-commandos focused on espionage and assassination outside of official channels. More effective and more fun that way. In my earlier years, I quickly learned that the best way to collect information is to buy a merc a drink or talk to the entertainers. The more I relied on bars and nightclubs to gather intel, the more connections I made with the key players. Not just the ones in the back office, but the ones slinging drinks with closed mouths and open ears. I started posing as a bartender myself and got quite good at it. Enjoyed it, even. I couldnât exactly stay put for, well, reasons. But among those in the know, Iâm still the go-to source for recommendations about the Milky Wayâs best bars and nightclubs. After one too many âyou should write a book!â jokes, I did. Guns and bribes in this economy? A cocktail guide seemed like an ideal little side hustle to help fund my more targeted activities. With this pen name, Iâm free to share my favorite anecdotes about well-known figures across civilizations. Iâve also included a few safety tips for surviving the galaxy, setting your drink on fire, or respecting local drinking ages. (If youâre not legal, close this book up and come back when you are, babe.) I guess I just donât believe in accidental injuries. For those feeling brave, go ahead and speculate about who I truly am. Iâm not worried in the least. Because you wonât guess, and Iâll never tell⌠-- âAmbree TâSiaâ
MIXERS Whether youâre slinging the hard stuff or milder âhair of the FENRIS Mech that bit youâ drinks, mixers are the essential building blocks to any good bar. By all means, keep your favorite fruit juices, sodas, and whatnots on hand. But as someone who tends to move around a lot due to my⌠profession (Iâm a master of the Asari Goodbye), I tend to lead a minimalist lifestyle. As such, I keep these mixer recipes on file to prepare quickly, as I need them. Letâs just say that theyâll keep your cocktails interesting.
Blue Thessia
Yes, mama is supposed to love all her babies the same, but this mixer is my favorite for its taste and versatility. (Hmm⌠sound like any cocktail authors you know?) Named after the asari homeworld, the Blue Thessia is the crown jewel of your bar essentials. Youâll predominantly taste sweet juniper and recognize that bold, asari-blue color. You could make your drinks without Blue Thessia, but thatâs programming a Quantum Blue Box type AI and not giving it a sexy voice. What a wasted opportunity! Do be aware that this one contains trace amounts of element zero â nothing to concern yourself about, though, and it does keep things nice and sparkly.
Tuchanka Dry
This is the good stuff and itâs very hard to come by, which is why I make my own. Tuchanka Dry is similar to a fat-washed bourbon, which not only adds the flavor of the fat to the spirit, but also its texture and weight. If youâre making a Full Biotic Kick (page 43), well, this partâs the âkickâ. Traditionally made with Thresher Maw fat (I did say it was hard to come by), this recipe started as a krogan rite-of-passage celebratory drink, when leftover fat from the kill was mixed together with alcohol. If you prefer dodging grocery carts over acid spit, you can make your own and get a surprisingly similar taste by substituting bacon.
Horse Choker
Iâve often found fighter pilots to be aggressive and competitive, so it delights me that this recipe I procured from a hot-tempered Alliance pilot named Jeff âJokerâ Moreau Is instead indulgent and harmonious. The chocolate and espresso flavors combined with the spiced rum work oh so well together in a luxurious cooperation that especially enhances minty drinks. But donât take my word for it â if youâre feeling a little spicy and hot-tempered, you might find this mixer helpful when you toss back a few shots of Jokerâs Challenge (page 98) with your closest frenemies.
Simple Syrup
An essential building block for cocktails. Any well-stocked bar has a traditional simple syrup on hand. If youâre new to cocktail making and a bit apprehensive, start here â just add sugar to boiling water. See? Simple. As youâll see, I prefer twice as much sugar to water. Itâs on the richer side and your mileage may vary, as they say. Be aware that you donât want to let too much water evaporate, or the syrup will reduce and cook down to something resembling krogan poetry: thicker and sweeter than expected. (Try to get past one stanza of Blue Rose of Illium without rolling your eyes out of their sockets, I dare you.)
Salarian Salination Solution
Successfully made your way through the Simple Syrup recipe (page 13) but still feel like you need one more easy win? Perhaps a mixer thatâs ideal for citrus-heavy cocktails? Make this bartenderâs saline next and keep in mind that science doesnât always have to be complicated. Science is also very useful, and youâll find this mixer in a variety of recipes throughout this book. (For the more adventurous, the Liquified Turian on page 57 is a must.) Now, if you think adding sea salt to warm water isnât exactly âscienceâ, then your name isnât Sel Vass â a double-crossing salarian bartender who fancies himself an âintoxicologistâ. I have⌠thoughts on that, which is why Iâve named this Salarian Salination Solution after him. And if your name is Sel Vass, Iâm going to add your kidneys to my next bar menu â preferably with you still alive. (Iâve heard that when the Protheans did this to your ancestors, they found the fear adds âspiceâ).
Tupo Concentrate
I love a good Tupo Concentrate: it has a delicious balance of mouth-puckering tartness and euphoric sweetness. The only problem? I can never find any berries! Tupari sports drink-makers horde as much as they can to sell â12 trillion bottles per dayâ, despite only containing 10 percent real tupo juice (goddess only knows what the other 90 percent of that swill is). Fortunately, grenadine is a perfect substitute for when youâre looking to add a beautiful hue and unexpected depth of flavor to your cocktail.
Drell Skin Venom
Like bitters, Drell Skin Venom adds a nice bite, making your cocktail extraordinarily complex with just a few drops. Now, you might think that enough Drell Skin Venom may grant the memory-recall properties of its erstwhile secretor, but itâs more likely that the high alcohol content (which keeps it in heavy rotation at swanky bars like the Silver Coast Casino) will create more plot holes in your life than the salarian extranet drama Dynasty of Stars (with the same amount of nausea - stick to science, you excitable little amphibians!)
Asari Honey Syrup
For the occasions where youâre looking to spice things up, Iâd suggest using this honey syrup. Itâs just as versatile as its simple syrup sister but adds a bit more flavor. This particular mixer has a spicy little background as well: the original recipe was made in an Ardat-Yakshi monastery and its honeyed flavor is as alluring as its makers. Considering said makers enjoy nothing less than total domination, however, this syrup is unexpectedly collaborative with numerous drinks and flavors.
AFTERLIFE CLUB What is Afterlife? Why, the ultimate in illicit entertainment. Iconic, chic, ready to show you a good time⌠but mind your manners. Under all that polish, Afterlife is seething with violence just under the surface. A locus of power and secrecy â is it any wonder the glitzy club sports an ethic of violence and greed? And thatâs just how this nightclubâs patrons, and its Pirate Queen, prefer things. Aria TâLoak oversees this particular multilevel palace of paradise and perdition on the space station Omega. And yes, its lure entices millions around the galaxy to leave their ordinary lives for extraordinary adventures, so be sure to show her the proper respect. Sheâs shot people she liked far more for way less. The recipes in this section are her top sellers â perfect for when youâd rather spend the night in than risk getting poisoned by a batarian bartender with a grudge against humans.
The Omega Sling
This cocktail is a personal favorite of mine from Afterlife for a reason. Itâs sweet, tart, bitter, fruity, and spicy all at once. A complex little thing, and a single-serving punch that can also pack one. While itâs definitely a drink made to impress (look at that list of ingredients!), for me, it tastes like personal accomplishment. I once led a raid on a CAT6 outpost that nabbed enough high-end military gear to outfit my crew for a long, long time. It was a bastard to plan, just like the Omega Sling, but that only made the victory that much sweeter.
Blue Sun Spritz
Did you know that the Blue Suns mercenary group was founded by a batarian named Solem Dalâserah? Thatâs the public-facing story theyâd prefer you believe, at least. And to celebrate said founding, Solem toasted the group with this hard-hitting wine spritz. The color ends up being a rich deep blue â a little on the nose, maybe, but it lands most satisfyingly on the tongue.
Tuchanka Sunset
Donât ever let anyone tell you that krogan donât have a sense of humor. I used to run with a Battlemaster in my early days whose wit was as dry and vast as an Asterian desert. We survived an Eclipse double-cross by the skin of our teeth, and when we got back to our dingy little hideout, he toasted our fortune with a Tuchanka Sunset. His own personal recipe. He claimed the bartenders at Afterlife know how to make it, if you ask. Now, I love a good sunset drink and as such was appalled to watch him dump black rum on top of an otherwise flawless concoction. Sensing my shock, with a wry half-smile he said, âWell, yeah, wouldnât be a sunset on Tuchanka without a choking cloud of toxic ash to ruin the view now, would it?â
Serrice Ice Brandy
I find human Alliance officers to be particularly dull and single-minded. So new to space, with such a short lifespan, few know how to relax and have fun. Not so with their medical personnel: disgruntled, overworked, and with the romance of military life quickly snuffed out by the harsh realities of combat, they know how to put the Rs in R & R. Serrice Ice Brandy always reminds me of a particular Alliance officer named Karin Chakwas, very posh and put together, who got a little salty after a drink (or several) of the stuff.
Sovak Juice
Have you heard the one about how krogan males name their infants? According to salarian scientist Padok Wiks, they get drunk on sovak juice and hold belching contests. Apparently, whatever sounds most like a word becomes a name. I doubt thereâs much validity to this claim (although⌠Wrex?) but I still remember the young krogan merc I renamed after a night of tossing back these nutty, bubbly little things together. Itâs been a while, but I do sincerely hope Urp is doing well out there. [note on recipe: âGarnish: For sovak juice? Come on, now.â]
Noverian Rum Swizzle
Seeing as rum is a liquor made with sugarcane molasses or sugarcane juice, one might associate it with warm, tropical climates. One would also be wrong and very much missing out on one of the finest varieties in the entire galaxy. I refuse to make this drink with anything less than quality Noverian rum (and Asari Honey Syrup, of course). Once youâve had a taste, youâll understand why Aria TâLoak was so sulky after Purgatoryâs stock of the stuff ran out. Though, to be fair, having her entire empire occupied by Cerberus General Oleg Petrovsky may have also contributed to her sour mood. For that authentic touch of frost, I recommend harnessing biotics to give your stick the right amount of swizzle.
DARK STAR LOUNGE Dark stars, as a theoretical curiosity, could be extremely powerful. Dark Star Lounge, an actual bar, definitively serves extremely powerful drinks. Located on the Citadel one level up from the C-Sec office in Zakera Ward (a convenient perp walk away when patrons get too rowdy), many bartenders are happy to give customers exactly what they ask for⌠the âusualâ being a thumping hangover. If you like your drinks stiffer than a turianâs carapace, youâve flipped to the right section. Higher-proof spirits with a higher spirit-to-mixer ratio for a higher class of drinker, Dark Star recipes do not disappoint. I trust you can handle it⌠and if you happen to wake up next to an attractive stranger the next morning whose name you canât quite recall, I recommend breaking the ice over some Huevos Rancheros Ă la Vega (see page 12, you charmer).
Batarian Ale Shandy
If youâre not a krogan or batarian, please donât drink uncut batarian ale. Itâs mean, itâs green, and it will leave your insides clean. Instead, use this recipe to make yourself a refreshing and fizzy shandy. Yes, a human Spectre managed to stay on their feet after chugging a glass of the uncut ale â at least thatâs what one Dark Star Lounge bartender claims. But ask yourself: Are you really the type? Iâm reminded of a naĂŻve bar patron cosplaying in plastic N7 armor he convinced his poor wife to buy him (along with his shuttle-fare off world, understandably). Youâre not âtruly extremeâ. Do yourself a favor: Check your ego and enjoy the Batarian Ale Shandy.
Dark Star Vespertini
No trip to Dark Star Lounge is complete without ordering this signature cocktail, the Dark Star Vespertini, especially if you have a bit of a sweet tooth. Iâve included the recipe here, at great risk to certain of my⌠relationships⌠at the lounge. Itâs simply too delicious not to share, with a rich chocolate-raspberry taste. Be sure to shake this one well â for the nonbiotics who need to do this task manually, I liken it to the amount of time until you start to worry your arm will fall off. If it feels like youâre giving the tumbler a quick ride in an M35 Mako, youâre doing it right.
Ryncol Cocktail
Listen up, tough guys. I promise you that bartenders are never impressed when you swagger up and ask for âthe strongest you haveâ. In fact, just to make sure you embarrass yourself in front of your friends, theyâll probably slap on a fake smile and pour you a tall glass of krogan ryncol. Never heard of it? They certainly donât advertise the stuff. But for fun, letâs spitball some potential slogans: âRyncol! It hits aliens like ground glass,â or âRyncol! Itâs like sipping knives,â or âRyncol! Itâll set of radiological alarms.â Just ask a certain Commander Shepard. And enjoy your purple prayers to the porcelain goddessâŚ
Paragade Punch
While Tupari sports drinks are all the rage, donât discount Paragade! Especially in cocktails. By itself, itâs not too good and itâs not too bad, but mixed with alcohol, itâs somewhat of a revelation. This recipe gives you a layered drink that starts out sweetly and ends with a real kick to the quads. Perfect for those nights where you might hold your tongue at one bar only to start throwing chairs at the next. It takes a deft hand to get the blue-purple-red proportions right when youâre making one, and to get the ending you want after a night of drinking them.
Dextro Heat Sink
Like a boilermaker, the Dextro Heat Sink is a great way of making strong alcohol stronger. During his Archangel days, Garrus Vakarian and his crew would slug these like candy as they racked up wins against the Blue Suns, Blood Pack, and Eclipse thugs on Omega. This is a sweet and spicy tequila cocktail (the âheatâ) with a dropped shot of Ancho Reyes liqueur (the âsinkâ). An unlimited amount of these might be fun at first, with the occasional pause to blow some heat off your tongue, but itâs advised to keep them to a finite amount.
Turian Horosk
Considering the rigidity of turians, youâd need a pretty strong drink to loosen them up enough to get the wedgie out of their thermal armor. Enter: Turian Horosk. Another Garrus Vakarian favorite, youâre not going to find this outside of a handful of bars, and certainly not at the posher Silver Coast Casinos of the âverse. So, if youâre looking to calibrate your soberness in the opposite direction, hereâs the recipe for you. The lemonade flavor helps it go down easy and the spices are optional â the hangover from too many rounds of this, however, is not.
PURGATORY BAR The Citadel is a tourist trap. Humans tend to view this as a disparaging label, but I say it with great enthusiasm. For my credits, thereâs no better way to take in the sights than as a lowercase t tourist, and thereâs no better place to do that than the Citadel. If you have the time, a bar named Purgatory serves drinks that are especially heavenly. If you like new takes on classic cocktails with a slightly higher mixer-to-alcohol ratio, sip on these before taking in the sights and sounds of the Presidium. And if youâre just not convinced itâs worth the visit, well, at least you can whip up these drinks at home. And do take your Citadel recommendations with a grain of salt when youâre there (barring the guide currently in your hands, of course). Especially ones coming from the hotshot human Spectre making the rounds â that one will endorse anything for a discount.
Frozen Pyjak
The best part about tending bar? The customers. I learn a little about a lot just by listening. The worst part about tending bar? The customers. Sometimes I donât have to listen too intently, as their volume increases with their alcohol intake. For fun, I used to give my loudest customers a freebie: the Frozen Pyjak. I overheard Samantha Traynor boasting (loudly, ironically) about this and it sounded too entertaining not to try it out: Every few hours, you empty your spill pad into a martini glass and toss a little ice in for presentation. This is a much nicer variation for you to make. All these ingredients go incredibly well together, so you can serve it to people you actually like. [note on recipe: âGarnish: Well now, that would defeat the point.â]
Full Biotic Kick
My curiosity for the Full Biotic Kick was piqued by a charming young Alliance comms specialist named Samantha Traynor who extolled its virtues. Apparently, this was the most popular drink served when she worked âextensivelyâ as a bartender during her university days⌠for a whole four years. I understand humans consider this quite the span of time â how quaint. I believe the âkickâ comes directly from the Tuchanka Dry, and if youâve ever faced down a biotic krogan Battlemaster (and lived to tell about it), youâll understand why.
Vodka Skycar
As the Citadel became increasingly populated and its denizens spread across the wards of this colossal space station, they began to rely more and more on a centralized mode of transportation. Enter the skycar, a maddeningly slow shuttle that, though nowhere near as glacially paced as Citadel elevators, redeems itself with some of the most incredible views in the galaxy. When I need to slow down, I make myself a nice Vodka Skycar, get lost in its pretty sky-blue color, and hire an ambling ride around the glittering Citadel Tower. Magical.
Rojo Loco
Everyone loves a good Rojo Loco: C-Sec, pirates, accountants, politicians, hunky Alliance marines who think pull-up contests and cute little nicknames might get you into their beds (full disclosure, they can, and they have⌠cheers, James Vega). Because underneath all the stories everyone tells themselves about themselves, at the end of the day, all any of us are really looking for is to enjoy a bit of spice and heat. Maybe thatâs a firefight. Maybe thatâs filing paperwork. Either way, this drink ticks that box and gives you the same warm tingle.
TM88 Smash
I love a good rebrand. TM88 used to be known as âMercâs Courage,â because drinking enough of the stuff gave one the false sense of strength that often comes with getting absolutely hammered. Salarians especially took a shine to this Earth-based whiskey and swore it had medicinal properties⌠when really it was the shortest distance between two points to get a person drunk. Ever the opportunists, salarians branded TM88 as a cure-all and âthe only alcoholic drink endorsed by the Medical Board of SurâKesh.â Alliance officer Kaidan Alenko credits the stuff for his speedy discharge from Huerta Memorial Hospital. So, drink up! Doctorâs orders.
ETERNITY Due to its extreme opulence and high level of security, the asari-run planet of Illium is a preferred tourist destination and (second, third, fourth) home of many of the galaxyâs most well-known celebrities. Itâs also under a state of near-total surveillance. You can take their self-congratulatory media touting Eternity as âthe sexiest bar in the Milky Wayâ with a few handfuls of salt (though with Matriarch Aethyta slinging drinks, âsexiest bartenderâ would be harder to argue with), but donât sleep on their drink selection. I have a soft spot for asari drinks, as you might expect. I find them to be sweet and mellow and think Eternity gets them right. Iâve collected a few of my favorites for you here. Regarding the Liquified Turian (page 57) backstory, well⌠who can say if that oneâs legit? But seeing as the normally stringent customs laws of Council space on safety and sapient trafficking are relaxed on Illium, I canât say Iâd be too surprised. Â
Mystery Drink
I understand mystique. Itâs a powerful weapon that can influence your enemies before you ever need to fire a shot. I also understand bullshit and am very good at differentiating the latter from the former. So, when I first heard this Mystery Drink is rumored to come from âthe deepest reaches of the Traverse,â distilled on a âshadowy nameless planetâ by âspecifically adapted Vorcha,â alarms were ringing in my head. Until I had a sip. Deceptively fruity and floral but highly intoxicating with an otherworldly appearance, well, does it matter where it came from, especially if you can get the same fabulous taste using syrup from canned lychees? No. In the case of this delicious little Mystery Drink, it most certainly does not.
Asari Honey-Mead Bellini
Made in an Ardat-Yakshi monastery, asari honey mead is for those with taste. And, letâs be honest, credits. Whoever said âthe best things in life are freeâ was compensating, because this expensive little drink is worth the experience. Ever the one to push boundaries, I prefer to prepare my honey mead with sparkling wine to make an effervescent little bellini, because the sweet and mellow flavor mixed with bubbles positively sparkles â in the glass and on the soul.
Perfection
I once crossed paths with this pretty little human who called herself Miranda Lawson. Despite her formidable intelligence, killer biotic abilities, and, well, letâs just say her âsuperior physical constitution,â she seemed to be⌠missing something. She didnât say and I didnât press, but we shared a drink whose taste was as excellent as the woman pouring. Asking her what she called it, she gave a sad smile and simply said, âPerfectionâ. Indeed. To her surprise (and delight, I might add), I sweetened the affair with a shot of strawberry liqueur and told her, âYes, but thereâs always room for improvement, dearâ. Hmm. I wonder if she ever found what she was looking for.
Memory Stealer
Ah, Kasumi Goto. The best thief in the business. You donât remember her and she prefers it that way. Sheâs so good, sheâll even nick your memory of her ever having been there⌠along with whatever valuables you had in your pockets. When I do have the good fortune of remembering her, I like to pour this drink made with Japanese gin in her honor. And like the master thief herself, one too many Memory Stealers will no doubt leave you with a hazy recollection the next morning.
Liquified Turian
âAmbree,â you say. âCertainly, Matriarch Aethytaâs story of a krogan drinking liquified turian on a bet is embellished? A tall tale? Urban legend meant to titillate, disgust, and delight?â Maybe. Regardless, itâs one of my favorites, so I made this drink in homage (and to capitalize off the story â your girl is nothing if not quick to make a quick cred). I use a tequila base, with agave being native to a desert climate like youâd find on Palaven. Of course, I use egg white for the smooth texture, plus saline to stabilize this particular choice of âproteinâ. And the blue curaçao, well, turian blood is blue, after all! Mm, you can almost taste the dextro-amino acids. [note on recipe: âGarnish: No embellishment needed with a backstory this impressive.â]
FLUX
Flux is one of the more recent night spots to open on the Citadel and boasts a casino in addition to a well-stocked bar. The atmosphere is almost as inviting as the volus who runs the place â alternating between owner, cook, and bartender, one wonders where Doran finds the energy. But at some point, youâll be sure to find this little macaroon from Irune shaking his pressure suit on the dance floor.
The recipes Iâve collected from Flux are, as you can imagine, fun and whimsical. Seeing as Doran spends an equal amount of time in the kitchen as he does behind the bar, you can also find a fair bit of culinary flare in the drink preparation. Enjoy yourself, Earth-clan!
Tupari Blast
Despite the volus being a race not cut out for physicality of any kind, their mastery of trade and commerce has helped Tupari sports drinks conquer the galaxy. It seems like you canât swing a dead CAT6 without hitting a vending machine of the stuff, and Doran has a particular fondness for it. Iâd be remiss to not include it here, both for its delicious taste and because of how well it sells. Its strong fruity flavor makes it a consistent Flux favorite. Itâll give you the courage to get on the dance floor and the electrolytes to stay there until closing time.
Rum Relay
A toast to the Mass Relays! Forgive my (brief, I promise) indulgence in sentimentality, but the Relays have brought together an array of intelligent life whose differences remind us of how weâre all pretty much the same: unsure of our place in the universe, but in our best moments willing to teach and learn from our Milky Way sisters and brothers. No one understands that better than Doran, and what better way to celebrate it than by sloshing a Rum Relay milk punch all over the dance floor as you boogie the night away.
Blasto Sting
This one unironically loves the Blasto franchise. The acting, the writing, the backdrops? High camp, babe. A human essayist, Sontag, wrote, âYou canât camp about something you donât take seriously. Youâre not making fun of it; youâre making fun out of it.â Â And whatâs more fun than adding cream to grape Pucker? It creates a hanar in every shot. Try my favorite drinking game: gather your friends, fire up Blasto Saves Christmas, and throw back a Blasto Sting every time he says, âEnkindle THIS!â
Denorian Beer Granita
Krogan are not known for negotiation. If you find yourself mediating with one for goddessâ sake do not show up empty-handed. I tried to bluff my way through just such a situation once and you wouldnât be reading this book if I hadnât had ingredients for Denorian Beer Granita on hand. I developed a fondness for Denorian beer from Urdnot Wrex, but this cocktail takes it to another level. In a desperate attempt to cool tensions, I offered to make a round of this unique drink with its smooth taste, fun texture, and visually appealing look. The krogan got the recipe and I got to walk away (with a little extra pep in my step from the caffeine). Win-win.
Tasty Tankard
What can I say? Iâm a Matriarch with a Maidenâs tastes: I like a pretty young thing on my arm, a warm Acolyte pistol, and a heaping bowl of human ice cream. Chocolate, if youâre taking notes. The Tasty Tankard is essentially a boozy milkshake, and I urge you to ignore anyone who tries to tell you that drinks made in a blender only belong in cheesy resorts. This one goes down dangerously easy, and the recipe makes enough for two⌠or one krogan with a sweet tooth. If that krogan happens to be Grunt, I advise having enough on hand to fill a large enough container. Perhaps a flower potâs worth? [note on recipe: âServes: 2⌠or 1 krogan.â]
CHORAâS DEN Not for the faint of heart, Choraâs Den on the Citadel is the âlivelier but deadlierâ choice to stop for a drink. A gentlemanâs club owned by a scoundrel (novel, I know), the clientele and drinks lean heavily towards the strong and seedy type. The loud music and low lighting do well to cover the bloodstains and less-than-legitimate conversations, but youâll have a great time if you mind your business and tip the asari dancers well. Be sure to ask Fist, the proprietor of this fine establishment, about the back room â itâs perfect for your next shady deal. And Iâm not one for gossip, but if youâre curious about the smell, Iâve heard Fist has a habit of burying âold problemsâ under the dancersâ stage. The following recipes evoke the Denâs more⌠aggressive tendencies.
Tequila Seâlai
Whether youâre human, turian, or salarian, weâve all got our shared little âcatch phrasesâ we catch ourselves saying: âEmbrace eternityâ if youâre asari, âVictory or deathâ if youâre krogan, â
heavy breathing intensifiesâ
, if youâre volus⌠you get the idea. I quite like the quariansâ âKeelah Seâlai,â or âBy the homeworld I hope to see one day.â Tragic but beautiful. This recipe is an ode to their homeworld, Rannoch, with desert and coastal flavors all brought together with a lovely prickly pear syrup.
Elasa
Iâm not really a âdrown your sorrowsâ type of gal. Iâm more of the âdrown you in a hail of incendiary ammo if you upset meâ type. To each their own. If you lean more on a shoulder and less on a trigger, you canât go wrong with an Elasa, aka Sorrowâs Companion. (Theyâre not joking when they say it serves oneâŚ) Pale green with a bitter aftertaste and tangy sweetness, itâs a great way to take lifeâs lemons and make lemon garnish for your cocktail (or limes, in this case). Fist, ever putting the gentlemen in gentlemenâs club, used to refer to this drink as The Cynthia, a snide reference to Elasa being Alliance Commander David Andersonâs preferred drink during his divorce.
Quad Kicker
Not for the faint of heart, the Quad Kicker will, well, kick you straight in the quad, I suppose. Samantha Traynor is adamant about âno curry powderâ in her version, but why take away that spicy mouthfeel? Add that curry simple syrup and let this baby wake you up! It ainât called the Quad Fondler, so step up and throw down with your friends (or enemies).
Shadowbrokertini
I hope by this point youâve come to realize that I know everything thatâs worth knowing. Yet I humbly admit that, try as I might, Iâm still unable to unmask the Shadow Broker. But I am familiar with their agents, including a certain proprietor of Choraâs Den. And even though Fist refuses to confess what he knows (which, I suspect, is even less than I do), he did agree to collaborate on a cocktail worthy of that confidential entity. Dark, shadowy, and with enough caffeine to help keep one sharp in the secrets-trading game, the Shadowbrokertini theatrically uses dry ice to add an air of mystery. I trust you donât need the Shadow Brokerâs services to know that swallowing dry ice can kill you, yes? [note on recipe: â(Note: Some Shadow Brokers prefer it without lime at all.)â]
The Erotic Biotic
I suppose I should start this one off with a warning: Donât underestimate young asari. Yes, there is a strong drive for at the Maiden stage to explore and experience. Curious and restless, some look for the nearest bar to dance in. But thatâs no reason to let your guard down. Many donât realize their mistake until theyâre telekinetically slammed into the nearest concrete wall. Well, thatâs just the ratio of risk-to-reward that Choraâs Den captures with this drink. With a winky flavor profile of fruit and cream, finish your Erotic Biotic with Drell Skin Venom to add a tingly bite (for the adventurous types), or with chocolate bitters (for the romantics). I like a bit of both â I may be a Matriarch, yet Iâve never lost that desire to explore and experienceâŚ
The Shifty Cow
While Iâve heard just about every maxim in the âverse, one rings particularly true: âYou canât trust any animal that can milk itself.â Yes, Iâm talking about space cows, with their unsettling, grabby little hands. Turn your back around one and theyâll pick through your pockets. The Shifty Cow cocktail is a clarified milk punch. And thatâs partly because itâs fun to separate the milk solids from the drink, but also because Iâm reminded of these audacious little cows eagerly separating an unsuspecting fool from their credits. And yes, we do have that in common, which reminds me of a human maxim: âDonât hate the player, hate the game.â You win this round, space cows.

Despite being a pioneer of abstract art in Korea Yoo Young-kuk (1916-2002) is largely unknown in our latitudes. Born into an affluent family of landowners he was able to study at the art school of Bunka Gakuin College in Tokyo, a liberal school that given the close surveillance of Korean students in Japan offered space to breathe, from 1935 until 1943. Yoo quickly embraced abstraction as his artistic language and consequently moved in the avant-garde circles of the Japanese capital. At this time Yoo was influenced by Russian constructivism as well as Jean Arp and Piet Mondrian, artists he was introduced to by Hasegawa Saburo and Murai Masanari, and created geometric reliefs, paintings and also experimented with photography.
These early stages of his career and his mature years following the tumultuous period following the end of the Japanese occupancy of Korea and the Korean War are covered in âYoo Youngkuk - Quintessenceâ, published in 2020 by Rizzoli. This first English-language monograph contains a very insightful essay by editor Rosa Maria Falvo and a wealth of works from all of Yooâs work phases. Falvo provides a brief but concise cross section of the artistâs career with a particular emphasis on Yooâs development towards his trademark colorfield paintings: after experimenting with postwar Informel Yoo from the mid-1960s on decided to make mountains his primary motif. Yooâs native region is very mountainous and exposed him to the forces of nature from an early age on. In his colorfield paintings Yoo sought to gain freedom in geometrical forms and primary colors but at the same time tried to capture the visual sensation of the mountains in changing lighting. Although his color palette changed towards pastel in his late work and his health dwindled Yoo Young-kuk painted until the very end of his life.
Being the first English-language monograph âYoo Youngkuk - Quintessenceâ not only provides a thorough introduction to the artist but through the wealth of high-quality reproductions makes accessible the work of a great artist.

High School Teacher AU
So the results from this poll was to do the AU with both my OCs & the 141, but I want to clarify that while I might do Teacher!141 x Reader if asked, this AU is mainly a Kali x Stone AU. The 141 aren't really the main focus (though that's not to say they'll only appear rarely).
Anyways, I wanted to first to an introduction of all of the characters (because I finally named my newest OC). We're going to talk about what class they're teaching, a little bit about them in this AU.
We're going to do this by grades (because some of them are teaching the same subject ((ie history)) but they're different classes). It's important to note that this is a U.S. high school, not a British/UK one. Also, some of them still have their callsigns because those callsigns could easily be written as a nickname they got from students.
Okay now onto the cast:
Peter Williams, Personal Fitness (Grade 9)- Coach Williams is well-loved by the students and is a former Marine. He's not very strict, very much lenient, hence why the freshmen love him. He has a knife scar that goes through his left eyebrow and all the way through his left eye (but didn't blind him). He is known for gushing about his wife and daughters (though some students and faculty believe that Dr. Greene is actually his "wife").
Arun "Hellstorm" Khatri, Environmental Science (Grade 9)- Mr. Kahtri is a former Naval pilot and is known as "Hellstorm" because he once "rained hell" down on a teacher who humiliated a student by making them stand outside the classroom with a sign detailing how they misbehaved. That being said, he is known for looking like he's perpetually bored due to his face usually being neutral and his voice monotone.
Kyle Garrick, Creative Photography 1 (Grades 9-12)- Mr. Garrick is a former SAS soldier who moved from the UK to teach kids how to get into photography. He teaches Creative Photography 1 only because he primarily works with film instead of digital cameras. Students often gush about how he makes them love photography and how his tips help them become better photographers.
John MacTavish, 2D Studio Art 1 & 2 (Grades 9-12)- Mr. MacTavish is a former SAS soldier and he moved from the UK to help American kids either start their artistic career or better improve their artistic skills. He's very out-going and he's a hit amongst the students. Don't tell the administrative faculty, but he often puts on movies for the kids on slow days.
Fariz "Heartthrob" Shah, Nutrition & Wellness (Grades 9-12)- Mr. Shah is a former Marine and he got his nickname due to being very charismatic. He is said to make all of the faculty swoon and even some students (though he stays away from students, even if they're eighteen). He teaches his students the joys of cooking.
Ashok Kumar, Chorus 1, 2, & 3 (Grades 9-12)- Mr. Kumar is a former Marine and he is extremely tall at 6'6". He walks a fine line of being demanding in terms of choir performance while also having days where his classes are just watching movies to relax. He and his senior chorus class go to Disney every year to perform. His choirs have won more trophies than the football team.
John Price, World History (Grade 10)- Mr. Price is a former SAS soldier and he moved to America as a favor to the principal of the high school whom he had fought alongside with. He is considered to be a rather fair teacher, stern but not too strict. He's vying to be the favorite history teacher among the tenth graders, often clashing with Stone/Mr. Mishra who also teaches tenth graders.
Vasanti Singh, IT Systems and Applications (Grade 10)- Ms. Singh is a former information systems technical and she took this teaching job simply because it was easy enough to let her mind rest. She's known to goof around, being a hit among the students and the other faculty members. Most students take her class because they think it'll be easy, oh how wrong they are.
Simon "Ghost" Riley, Weight Training 1, 2, & 3 (Grades 10-12)- Coach Riley is a former SAS soldier and he is known for being a hard-ass. He's really strict and has made kids cry, but he was the best out of all of the potential candidates so he got hired. His nickname is due to him being able to just disappear without anyone noticing. He lowkey has animosity towards Coach Williams because he doesn't understand why Coach Williams is so easygoing with the students. He pushes his students to be the best they can be. He has declined offers to become the new football coach, despite his leadership potentially being the key to improve the football team.
Nathan Greene, AP Pre-Calculus (Grades 10-12)- Dr. Greene is a former Marine and he has a PHD in mathematics. He could be teaching at a college and be a professor, but he loves to help improve younger students' love for mathematics. He is rumored to be Coach Williams' "actual" wife as he once popped his head in the gym and asked "how their girls were doing" while referring to Coach Williams' daughters. He has a son and most faculty members who believe Coach Williams and Dr. Greene are actually married swear up and down they can see similarities in both Dr. Greene's son and Coach Williams.
Vikram "Stone" Mishra, United States History (Grades 10-12)- Mr. Mishra is a former Corpsman and is a complete mystery to most people. He has managed to hide his first name from most faculty members and all of the students, as the scantrons they take in his class only refer to him as "Stone Mishra". No one knows where the nickname comes from, but every adult refers to him as "Stone". Students are in awe of his countless old battle scars, enough so that they take his class despite knowing how strict he is. He is often told to be the strictest teacher on campus.
Ivan Kohli-Petrov, AP English Literature & Composition (Grades 11-12)- Mr. Kohli-Petrov is a former Marine and is a man of few words. Despite being mostly silent, his teaching has helped the school's overall test scores improve with how much he makes his class seem more fun. Most juniors and seniors say he makes reading more fun than their previous English teachers. He's not known for his friendliness, considering the looks he gives whenever someone asks him how the right side of his body got severely burned.

Monday's Photography Inspiration -George Hurrell
George Hurrell was an American photographer renowned for his iconic portraits of Hollywood celebrities during the Golden Age of cinema. Born in Covington on June 1, 1904 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hurrell began his career as a painter but soon transitioned to photography, where he found his true calling as a portraitist. George Hurrellâs introduction to photography began in the early 1920s when heâŚ

Catch the Scene
Summary: Roman asked for photos he thought magical as a kid and soon found photography as a hobby. A hobby that can become a job if acting has a spell of failed auditions.
Author's note: I wish I had more energy to write more of this. The manager, I think, could be Logan, but it felt clunky to add in an introduction line, then weird to just have the name thrown into it.
My idea prompt for today: Photographer Roman, starts as wanting to capture fairytale settings to try describing later. The starts photographing pretty boys he sees and sometimes gets dates when he admits to it. Trying to go professional comes during an acting dry spell.
/\/\
Roman loved fairytales and that was as true when he was a child as it was now. When he was younger and his parents controlled the camera heâd beg and beg for pictures to be taken of places or scenes he insisted were out of fairytales. Remus did the same but for bins, dumps and roadkill so the times theyâd agreed to the pictures Roman wanted were often followed with far less pleasant pictures in the family albums.
Then they were given disposable cameras and Roman could seek out the different areas he believed magic happened in freely. Heâd run off on family trips to explore the wilderness and try to find the best pictures. Remus usually ran in the opposite direction and came back thrilled over animal droppings and bugs, some heâd taken a picture of then squashed in a notebook to ensure he could show them off as soon as possible.
Their parents were definitely amused at how trying to treat their sons equally somehow played into both kids interests as they grew up. Roman kept his photography up, sometimes claiming he had to go to a specific location or place heâd previously photographed in order to take more photos and properly imagine the scene now happening there in his mind. He got into theatre, and volunteered to help design the backdrops the school could afford, using his photos as inspiration often.
Remus meanwhile kept looking for bugs and animal waste. He took an interest in zoology and somehow made that a career and nobody was quite sure how that happened. Their parents claimed it was because of a camera and notebook of squashed bugs but most people never believed that.
/\
Both boys befriended people, often completely different people since their interests were so removed nowadays, but once or twice the same person befriended each of them. Virgil was one of those people, even if he refused to let Roman take him exploring.
âWhatâs with the cameras, Princey? I thought your space was on stage or in front of them, not the tech side of things.â He asked, looking around Romanâs dorm. Virgil was on the tech team of the current production and had come over after a practise to relax for a while. âIf Remusâs dorm wasnât 3 buildings away Iâd ask if he was storing his stuff here.â
âExcuse you.â Roman span from where heâd been checking his hair hadnât been messed up, âThe lenses are utterly different, mine are specialised for wide shots and broad focus. Remus for some ungodly reason thinks a narrow focus is best and couldnât even get a decent full body photo of a person if he wanted to with them.â
âNot sure you know how camera lenses work, but chill. I was just asking.â Virgil stepped back, looking at the cameras again. âSo you take pictures of people a lot?â
Roman shook his head, âTheyâre for landscapes where magic and romance is waiting to happen, and occasionally pretty men that need their beauty to be recorded. Please remain in that spot for a moment, the lighting is perfect. I hope you donât mind me taking your picture since youâve mentioned my photography equipment so much.â
âFine, but donât show anyone. I cannot have the pressure of matching a photo for the rest of our friendship.â Virgil grumbled, but remained mostly still as Roman found the right view.
/\
There had been no successful auditions for a while and Roman needed something to earn money from; That was the main inspiration behind his application as a photographer being sent to various publications and agencies.
âIâll admit when I saw the initials R. Pompadour I believed it was Remus applying for the position. Itâs widely known that his papers are all backed with evidence he photographed himself as well as that heâs changed focuses based on whims before now.â The manager said, leading him through to the interview room.
Roman chuckled a little, âYes, we were both given disposable cameras as young boys and got better cameras often as we grew up. If you look through my portfolio youâll see the types of pictures I specialised in is quite different to Remusâs however.â
âClearly. You are comfortable including people in your photos?â They asked, picking out a few which did. As a wildlife magazine, Roman could guess theyâd heard of Remusâs refusal to, in his words, âphotograph such a dull subject matter when the interesting bits are always so covered.â
âYes, although areas of natural beauty are my most frequent subject.â He agreed.
The manager smiled, âI believe you would be good for the role then. We do have other applicants to interview but you should be hearing within a few weeks if you are successful.â

Yvette Heiser - Phone Photography Essentials without Formal Education
In today's digital world, the art of photography has become more accessible than ever. You no longer need a formal education or expensive camera equipment to create stunning images. With advancements in smartphone technology, your phone can be a powerful tool for capturing professional-quality photos. Hereâs everything you need to know to excel in phone photography without a formal education.
Understanding Your Phoneâs Camera
Before diving into photography, itâs essential to understand the capabilities of your phoneâs camera. Modern smartphones are equipped with high-resolution sensors, multiple lenses, and advanced image processing software. Take some time to familiarize yourself with the various settings and features available on your phone's camera, including HDR, portrait mode, night mode, and manual controls for ISO, shutter speed, and white balance. For more detailed insights, consider exploring resources like Yvette Heiser Texas â All You Need to Know about Phone Photography.
Mastering the Basics of Photography
Even without formal education, you can learn the fundamental principles of photography. Start with the basics:
Composition: The rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing are essential techniques that can help you create balanced and visually appealing photos.
Lighting: Excellent lighting is essential for taking outstanding photos. Natural light is your greatest ally, so it's important to learn how to use it effectively. Understand the differences between soft and hard lighting and how to leverage shadows and highlights to enhance your images.
Focus and Exposure: Ensure your subject is in sharp focus. Most smartphones allow you to tap the screen to set the focus point. Adjusting exposure can help you manage the brightness and contrast of your photos.
Leveraging Photography Apps
One of the advantages of phone photography is the plethora of apps available to enhance your images. Here are a few must-have apps:
Editing Apps: Tools like Adobe Lightroom, Snapseed, and VSCO provide robust features for tweaking exposure, contrast, saturation, and other elements. They also come with presets and filters that can add unique and creative touches to your photos.
Camera Apps: Apps like ProCamera and Camera+ offer advanced manual controls, allowing you to fine-tune settings like ISO, shutter speed, and white balance.
Special Effects: Apps such as Lens Distortions and Afterlight can add unique effects and overlays to your photos, helping them stand out.
Building a Strong Portfolio
Your portfolio is your introduction in the photography world. Create a diverse collection of your best work to showcase your skills and style. Include different subjects such as landscapes, portraits, and macro shots. Regularly refresh your portfolio with updated and enhanced photographs. Sharing your portfolio on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest can help you reach a wider audience and attract potential clients.
 Networking and Marketing
Building a successful photography career requires more than just taking great photos. Networking and marketing are essential components:
Networking: Join online photography communities, attend local meetups, and participate in photography challenges. Networking with other photographers can lead to collaborations, referrals, and learning opportunities.
Social Media Marketing: Use social media to market your photography services. Regularly post your work, engage with your audience, and share behind-the-scenes content. Consider creating a website to establish an online presence and make it easy for clients to find and contact you.
 Continuous Learning and Experimentation
Photography is an ever-evolving field, and staying updated with the latest trends and techniques is crucial. Follow industry leaders, read photography blogs, and watch tutorial videos. Donât be afraid to experiment with new styles and subjects. Continuous learning and experimentation will help you grow as a photographer and keep your work fresh and innovative.
Conclusion
Excelling in phone photography without formal education is entirely achievable with dedication and practice. By understanding your phoneâs camera, mastering photography basics, leveraging apps, building a strong portfolio, networking, and continuously learning, you can create stunning images and establish a successful photography career. I suppose the best place to begin an introduction is at the very beginning. But let's be real, that's 35 years of filler that I'm sure most of you don't have the time to read through. Life is short, and life is busy, so how about we bullet point the highlights and "need to knows" leading up to the journey that you're all here for!
Hang on to your butts, I'm about to throw a lot of information at you in rapid fire succession.
I was born in April of '89 and was raised on the East Coast of Canada.
I have 4 older brothers, my parents are still together, and aside from a few hiccups I had a pretty good home life.
I have some alcohol related trauma due to my dad's addiction. He was never violent or abusive, but there are some mental scars that never fully healed. (Note he is now sober and our relationship is much better these days.)
I have a very close relationship with my mom.
My mom babysat so I was raised with 3 girls my age who are my sisters from other misters. We may not be related by blood, but we have that same bond that sisters have.
My family would have been considered lower middle class.
I was a tom boy growing up. I was more interested in video games and beast wars than barbies and baby dolls.
I started showing signs of mental health issues (anxiety, depression & panic attacks) around 10 years old (the same time my period started) but they were not addressed until my late 20s.
I had severe acne in my teens and have bad permanent scaring on my cheeks as a result. This led to an ongoing struggle with Body Dysmorphia and a lot of money spent on skin resurfacing that never worked.
High School was horseshit but I never dealt with any severe bullying. These were the years, however, that I began self-harming.
I wasn't "popular" per say, but I had lots of friends growing up.
I started working with a paper route at 10, then at 16 got my first job in retail at a Dollar store that was located next to a strip club. I will regale you with those stories in a future post.
I would be employed in the customer service industry without a break for the next 8 years.
I got my BA in English straight out of High School and put myself in crippling debt for a useless piece of paper.
During a night of D&D spent over at one of my friends' exes apartments, at 19 years old, I had my first kiss, got drunk for the first time, and lost my virginity all in one shot.
I did not drink or do drugs as a teen.
I have never done hard drugs or smoked cigarettes.
I have only been drunk about 5 times in my life, only once bad enough for a hang over, and rarely ever have a drink even to this day.
I didn't start smoking weed until my mid 20s.
I went full emo (aesthetic, music, and personality) in University.
My dream job is to be a novelist.
I have a certificate in Photography and shoot nature as a hobby, and pets as a paid gig from time to time.
I had a popular YouTube channel for like 5 minutes in 2009 but then I panicked and deleted it.
I have never had a career outside of customer service.
I have only had five sexual partners in my life.
I have only ever had two relationships last more than 2 months.
I identified as aromantic asexual for a very long time.
I do not currently know what I identify as sexually. Most likely aromantic bisexual, but it's very fluid.
I have been with my Husband for approximately 10 years.
I have attempted suicide twice.
I was diagnosed with PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder) around the time I was 30 and began LIFE CHANGING prescription medication (sertraline).
I do not like nor do I ever want children so I got my tubes tied at 32.
I'm a huge animal lover and as of this time have owned 2 cats, 4 dogs, 3 budgies, 2 hamsters, 1 rabbit, and 7 rats over the course of my lifetime.
I have an incomplete education in IT Web Design and Audio Engineering.
I have vocal training but hate the sound of my voice.
I made money streaming video games on twitch with some friends for a bit in 2016 - 2017.
I started working in the donation rooms of thrift stores in 2016 and honestly if it wasn't for the bullshit politics of the companies I've worked for I could totally see myself staying in that industry. I wouldn't be against opening my own thrift shop one day.
I have been an introvert since Junior High.
I am agnostic.
Okay... Alright, okay, alright.
I think that covers all the need-to-knows of my life before I said "Fuck it" and started taking off my clothes in front of the camera. Thanks for sticking with me through that whole information dump. Hopefully that's enough to give you a bit of an idea of who I am, and can maybe help break that idea that all sex workers have tragic pasts and severe trauma.
My life has never been tragic. Yes, there have been hurdles I've had to overcome, an alcoholic parent, navigating life with severe anxiety and depression, and the adolescent struggles any teenager and young adult may face. But really, my life has honestly been kind of uneventful, and I don't mean that as a bad thing!
This is my foundation, the building blocks that made me who I am today. And who is that?
Well, stick around and I'll tell you!

Bands
BIKINI KILL
LE TIGRE
Bikini Kill is an American punk rock band formed in Olympia, Washington, in October 1990. The group originally consisted of singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna, guitarist Billy Karren, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. The band pioneered the riot grrrl movement, with feminist lyrics and fiery performances. Their music is characteristically abrasive and hardcore-influenced. After two full-length albums, several EPs and two compilations, they disbanded in 1997. The band reunited for tours in 2019 and 2022, with Erica Dawn Lyle on guitar in place of Karren.
Le Tigre (/lÉ ËtiËÉĄrÉ/, French pronunciation: [lÉ tiÉĄĘ]; French for "The Tiger") is an American electronic rock and riot grrrl band formed by Kathleen Hanna (of Bikini Kill), Johanna Fateman and Sadie Benning in 1998 in New York City. Benning left in 2000 and was replaced by JD Samson. They mixed punk's directness and politics with playful samples, eclectic pop, and lo-fi electronics. Like with many bands in and from the riot grrrl movement, many of the lyrics addressed feminist themes and ideas. The group also added multimedia and performance art elements to their live shows, which often featured support from like-minded acts such as the Need.
Bio on Kathleen
Kathleen Hanna (born November 12, 1968) is an American singer, musician and pioneer of the feminist punk riot grrrl movement, and punk zine writer. In the early-to-mid-1990s, she was the lead singer of feminist punk band Bikini Kill, and then fronted the electronic rock band Le Tigre in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Since 2010, she has recorded as The Julie Ruin.
In 2009, Hanna made her zines, art pieces, photography, video, music, journals, and other material which focus on the early formation of the Riot Grrrl movement available at the Fales Library at New York University. A documentary film about Hanna was released in 2013 by director Sini Anderson, titled The Punk Singer, detailing Hanna's life and career, as well as revealing her years-long battle with Lyme disease. Hanna is married to Adam Horovitz of the Beastie Boys.
1968â1988: Early life and feminism
Hanna was born November 12, 1968, in Portland, Oregon.
At age three, her family moved to Calverton, Maryland; as Hanna's father changed occupations, the family moved several more times.Hanna first became interested in feminism around the age of nine, after her mother took her to a rally in Washington, D.C. where feminist icon Gloria Steinem spoke.
In a 2000 interview with BUST magazine, Hanna recalled: "My mom was a housewife and wasn't somebody that people would think of as a feminist, and when Ms. magazine came out we were incredibly inspired by it.
I used to cut pictures out of it and make posters that said 'Girls can do anything', and stuff like that, and my mom was inspired to work at a basement of a church doing anti-domestic violence work. Then she took me to the Solidarity Day thing, and it was the first time I had ever been in a big crowd of women yelling, and it really made me want to do it forever."
Hanna's interest grew when her mother checked out a copy of Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique from the library.
Their involvement in the women's rights movement was done quietly during Hanna's childhood, due to her father's disapproval.
Upon her parents' divorce, Hanna returned to Portland and attended Lincoln High School and Grant High School.
After high school, she relocated from Portland to Olympia, Washington, to attend The Evergreen State College in the late 1980s.
During this time she worked as a stripper to pay her tuition.
"My parents didn't go to college. I felt lucky [to attend]." While at Evergreen, with fellow student and photographer Aaron Baush-Greene, she set up a photo exhibit featuring the pair's photography, which dealt with sexism, violence against women, and AIDS â issues that were heightened for Hanna when she volunteered for SafePlace, a domestic violence organization.
However, the school administrators took the photos down before they had the chance to be viewed, an act of censorship that prompted what Hanna refers to as her "first foray into activism": the creation of Reko Muse, an independent feminist art gallery, with friends Heidi Arbogast and Tammy Rae Carland.
Hanna began doing spoken word performances that addressed sexism and violence against women. Eventually, she abandoned spoken word in favor of music after a conversation with one of her favorite writers, countercultural icon Kathy Acker. Hanna recalled,
Acker asked me why writing was important to me, and I said, 'Because I felt like I'd never been listened to and I had a lot to say,' and she said, 'Then why are you doing spoken wordâno one goes to spoken word shows! You should get in a band.'
Hanna then formed a band with Arbogast and Carland, called Amy Carter, which put on shows before the art exhibitions.
1989â1999: Bikini Kill
Later, Hanna started another band called Viva Knievel that toured the United States for two months before disbanding.
Upon returning to Olympia in 1990, Hanna began collaborating with Evergreen student, drummer and punk zinester Tobi Vail after seeing a performance of the Go Team (a band made up of Vail, Billy Karren, and Calvin Johnson) and recognizing Vail as the mastermind behind the fanzine Jigsaw that Hanna greatly admired and loved.
In October 1990, Hanna and Vail joined with Karren and bassist Kathi Wilcox to form Bikini Kill, which soon became part of the seminal early-1990s Olympia, Washington music scene. One goal of the band was to inspire more women to join the male-dominated punk scene.
While Bikini Kill were in Washington, D.C. during summer 1991, Kathleen recorded with two side projects, featured on the compilation cassette A Wonderful Treat: Suture (with Sharon Cheslow and Dug E. Bird), and Wondertwins (with Tim Green of Nation of Ulysses). Bikini Kill, Suture, and Wondertwins all performed at the International Pop Underground Convention in August 1991.
Bikini Kill's first release for the Kill Rock Stars label was a self-titled EP produced by Ian MacKaye of Fugazi.
Bikini Kill then toured the UK, recording a split LP with UK band Huggy Bear. This tour was filmed and the band was interviewed by Lucy Thane for her documentary, It Changed My Life: Bikini Kill in the UK. Upon returning to the U.S.
the band began working with Joan Jett, who produced their single "New Radio/Rebel Girl". After the single's release, Hanna began co-writing songs with Jett for her new album.
At the same time, Hanna recorded her spoken-word "Rockstar", released on a 7-inch single in the Kill Rock Stars "Wordcore" series; and "I Wish I Was Him", which appears on the KRS compilation Rock Stars Kill. The song, written by Ben Lee about alternative rock heartthrob Evan Dando, was originally recorded by Lee's band Noise Addict.
The first two Bikini Kill EPs were released on CD as The C.D. Version of the First Two Records in 1993.
The band released two more full-length albums, Pussy Whipped in 1994 and Reject All American in 1996, and in 1998, Kill Rock Stars released Bikini Kill: The Singles, a collection of the group's seven-inch and compilation tracks. Bikini Kill amicably disbanded in mid-1998.
2000âpresent: Le Tigre and the Julie Ruin
After Bikini Kill's breakup, Hanna began working on a solo project called Julie Ruin. The project was created entirely in Hanna's bedroom using a $40 drum machine. One self-titled album was released under the Julie Ruin pseudonym, and was partially inspired by the work of feminist theorist Julia Kristeva.
Hanna said of the project:
Girls' bedrooms sometimes can be this space of real creativity. The problem is that these bedrooms are all cut off from each other. I wanted the Julie Ruin record to sound like a girl from her bedroom made this record but then didn't just throw it away or it wasn't just in her diary but she took it out and shared it with people.
While in Portland, Oregon, Hanna began working with friend and then-zine editor Johanna Fateman on a live show for Julie Ruin. The collaboration resulted in the two briefly forming a band called the Troublemakers, named after a G. B. Jones film, which ended when Fateman relocated to New York City to attend art school.
Hanna soon moved to New York City, and with the addition of filmmaker Sadie Benning, they started another band called Le Tigre based upon a more electronic style of music, similar to the sampler-driven sound Hanna had begun to explore with Julie Ruin. (She later revealed to Bust magazine that she was "totally broke" at this time and ate oatmeal daily.)
Hanna refers to it as part of a "Punk Feminist Electronic genre".
The band recorded for the Mr. Lady Records label, its first recording being an eponymous album which included the singles "Hot Topic" and "Deceptacon." Benning then left the band and was replaced by JD Samson for their second album, Feminist Sweepstakes.
Mr. Lady Records folded, and the group switched to Universal Records for the 2004 release of This Island. Hanna left the band in 2005 due to illness; she was later diagnosed with late-stage Lyme disease.
According to the Le Tigre website, during her time off from the band, Hanna volunteered as a band coach for the Willie Mae Rock and Roll Camp for Girls. She also taught an art class at NYU's grad school in the Fall 2007 semester and attended interior design classes.
In 2010, Hanna DJed at the Museum of Modern Art, later joining the Raincoats on stage to cover the Slits' Vindictive.
Also in 2010, Hanna announced she was rebuilding her 1997 act Julie Ruin, turning it into a full band called the Julie Ruin with Kenny Mellman and Kathi Wilcox, and that they would be creating a new record.
The band played their first show at Knitting Factory in New York City which included songs from Bikini Kill and Le Tigre, and one new composition.
From 2010 to 2013, director Sini Anderson worked on a documentary on Kathleen Hanna titled The Punk Singer, documenting her works from Bikini Kill to the Julie Ruin.
It premiered at SXSW in 2013.
In June 2013, Julie Ruin released its first single, "Oh Come On". An album, Run Fast was released in September 2013 with the band going on tour.
The band cancelled the tour planned for May to September 2014 due to Hanna's Lyme disease condition deteriorating.

Blurb:
Livia has always been a social butterfly, making friends wherever her diplomat parents took her. But when her family moves to Jordan, everything changes. She feels isolated and disconnected from her heritage, struggling to adjust to her new life in a (not-so) foreign land. At school, Livia meets a magnetic girl and finds herself falling head over heels in love for the first time. But their blossoming relationship is met with opposition from some members of their host country community, putting her newfound happiness at risk. As she navigates her complicated love life, Livia becomes increasingly involved in local activism and social justice causes. When she learns of new laws that would restrict access to education for girls and women and limit the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, Livia becomes a leader in the fight against discrimination. Despite her struggles with anxiety and the risks involved, Livia is determined to make a difference. Her activism gains national attention and support from allies around the world. But as the stakes get higher, Livia must navigate the complexities of family, diplomacy and school life to achieve her goals.
Characters: Livia: The protagonist. A 17 years old bisexual canado-albanese third culture kid. She's grown up all over the world and struggles to find her home. Intense in all she does, she's very creative and loyal to her friends Amina: A 17 years old undocumented refugee and Zaid's twin. She's an amazing artist, and wants to pursue a career in graphic design. She's a real fashionista. Alhem: A 18 years old lesbian girl and Livia's love interest. She's a force to be reckoned with, her infectious energy and love of life draw people to her like a magnet.
Zaid: A 17 years old asexual boy with a passion for astrology and climate change. He's Amina's twin. He wants to be a refugee lawyer and is an aspiring social media influencer.
Jumaan: A 19 yers old pansexual boy. He is passionate about LGBTQ rights and wants to be a journalist. From a wealthy family, he sometimes struggle to relate to his friends, but diffuses any tension with humour.
Alexander: A 40-something photography teacher. He's a britannic who grew up in Damascus and then worked as a photojournalist in some of the world's most dangerous conflict zones.
