What are your thoughts on the two other monkeys? Idk if you ever heard of them, but it's the Red Bottom Ape and Long Armed Gibbon.
i actaually had some pretty lore heavy origin story hcs for those guys a couple of years ago, but i dont think i ever posted them. ill put some of the old art here and paste the lore under a cut cause its LONG (replaced the old swk and maq in the last pic with some more recent ones bc my hcs for them changed so much lmao)
their lore was well researched i spent days on it but it was a couple years ago lmao, its based on the principals they represent plus which of yin/yang they represent
long armed gibbon- can seize the sun and the moon, distinguish the auspicious from the inauspicious, and manipulate planets and stars
gibbon was born when a seed from a fir tree fell from heaven to earth. it landed on top of an eroded mountian and a tree started growing. after several hundred years, when the tree stretched high enough and was wise enough and the pine cones had gone from dark purple to blue, the trunk split one day at sunrise on a blue misty morning and gibbon walked into the world
red-buttocked horse monkey- who has knowledge of yin and yang, understands human affairs, is adept in its daily life and able to avoid death and lengthen its life
horse was born from a drop of water flung from a trough in heavens stables (part of the reason swk was so pleased to guard the horses when he went)
when she fell to earth she became a river that people often visited and talked around and played in. from this she came to understand human affairs. she also found she could help creatures avoid death or prolong their life by feeding their crops. when she knew enough, she climbed out of the river at sundown and walked into the world
sun wukong, the wise stone monkey- who knows transformations, recognizes the seasons, discerns the advantages of earth, and is able to alter the course of planets and stars
stealing from nezha reborn where the myth goes that when nüwe patched the sky, the leftover stone was where swk came from, but im changing it to one of the tiles that was used to create the furnace was dropped, leaving a monkey sized gap where he could later on slot into to keep himself alive in there. the tile was knocked out of the basket by the wind and fell to earth and this was the only one that landed on ffm. you know the story here, he absorbed chi from heaven AND earth which is why hes so powerful
six eared macaque- who has a sensitive ear, discernment of fundamental principles, knowledge of past and future, and comprehension of all things
macaque was born very suddenly when a piece of moon rock broke off and fell to earth on a new moon. the resulting meteor created a huge and sudden flash of light in a forest which created hundreds of stark shadows at once. the shadows condensed and the resulting being wouldnt have lived if it hadnt been a new moon because he needed the next hours of darkness to collect himself into a full being. but before the night was done, a new monkey was born who was able to hear everything in the radius he had collected shadows from, which if youve ever seen a meteor flash, is a long way
somethin interesting abt the things that created them- swks tile was actually heavenly, which is why he represents primarily yang (heaven). his was the only one that was CRAFTED BY heaven. gibbon and horse are both from something that fell from heaven and then the earth changed its form (the tree grew on earth from a heavenly seed, and the drop of water became a river) whereas macaque, representing the yin is fully of earth, the meteor that created him was from heaven but he didnt directly come from the meteor, he came from the shadows it created on earth. his only connection is to the earth
#yeah i just never posted any of it for some reason#i think there was more lore but idk where it is#mk#ask#ig ill put it in the tag since its a bunch of art#lego monkie kid#monkie kid#mk art#my art#also idk why this post is fucking breaking tumblr the two middle pictures show up side by side on mobile and above on desktop#i cant edit it from here either i tried to move the readmore so that it cut off gibbons part#and i just cant do ANYTHING

Ok there's a lot of reasons throughout Freshman, Sophomore and Junior Year, both in and out of game, why Kipperlily would hate Riz specifically the most. Many of which folks have been pointing out. Heck, it might not go too deep - for all we know, it could all chalk up to this god situation inducing high levels of rage and jealousy and a warped perspective of justice and Riz happened to be in line of fire.
But now that we're beginning to see she might have hated him from day one, it reminded me: someone (or probably more than one person) recently theorised that the rat grinders might be upset that lucy or other students didn't get resurrected and the bad kids have had some pretty miraculous resurrections. Honestly this next bit doesn't hold up to inspection since Lucy died relatively recently, so maybe just call this a headcannon.
Riz was the one, after that infamous episode 2'd incident on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL, who ran out to get help, who was trying to find a cleric teacher or principal to help heal and resurrect these kids he had just met. These kids got given detention in the first hours of the first day of school and yet they got saved, by principal augefort no less, and being resurrected via the last phoenix egg of all things, and then the principal and the guidance counselor fuuuckin died for it. (Sidenote: did she perhaps know mr gibbons outside of school? Did she know penny luckstone?)

Original Release Date: 9/26/2018
The Quick Synopsis: The Bad Kids face down their first foes: the possessed lunch lady Doreen, and a horde of corn monsters that threaten to overwhelm the school.
Quotes:
Cool, how big is this thing's butt hole? Goblin sized? ~ Brian Murphy
Arthur Aguefort traumatizing students:
You see he reaches into his coat and takes out a swirling ball of fire, surrounded by pieces of red feathers. He says, "The egg of the last phoenix. However, death will exact it's price. There's foul play in this school. Only you can save us. A life for a life, eh Mr. Gibbons?"
You see Mr. Gibbons says, "I'm sorry, what?"
And you see that Principal Aguefort takes out a gun and shoots Mr. Gibbons in the head.
Everyone goes wide-eyed and slack-jawed with shock. Zac starts laughing. Lou slaps the table and begins fully losing it.
And then takes the gun and says, "The price must be paid."
Blam, and shoots himself in the head. Gorgug and Kristen, you come back to life.

jace could be the emotional support golden retriever to porter’s anxious cheetah. its crazy bc jace is literally also insane and neurotic but in the opposite way that porter is so somehow it cancels out.
“always a duo” because porter is insufferable at work without his emotional support sorcerer <3 thinking about their first appearance where jace just sounds stoned. principal aguefort and mr gibbons dead on the same dayyy? ….wild. before he becomes VP/gets shatterstarred he’s truly just so laidback it almost pisses porter off more. but if jace is like you’re harshing my vibe man. if you don’t want me around just say so. porter’s like fuck you i didn’t say that. do you wanna get lunch.
#if jace calls out sick it sucks that much more for everyone else because not only are the sorcery students unhinged#but porter’s on a fucking rampage because he doesn’t have anyone to pour all his neuroses onto#starbreaker#porter cliffbreaker#jace stardiamond#starcrossd lovers

Russian-Ukraine War Part 4: The Birth of Russia
So Russia is big. It's like one of their defining traits, vodka, art, brutality, colonialism, communism, and being massive. But did you know that once Russia was once…not so big? Let's do some history.
So the Mongolian Empire was a brutal genocidal engine of conquest but if you survived the initial invasion, it wasn’t so bad by the standard of brutal imperialists, the Mongols were big on religious tolerance, cultural integration and above all trade. So the Russians found themselves suddenly connected to Central and East Asia through their Mongol overlords, and Russia for the first time in Russian history, it is as connected to East Asia as it is to Europe.
The Mongolian Empire was great at conquest but struggled a lot with the ruling, and it probably won’t surprise you that it broke into 4 smaller states shortly after the death of Genghis Khan, located in the Middle East, China, Mongolia and Russia Respectively. The one that concerns us is the Golden Hoard, the Russian based Mongolian state, who were called “Tatars” by the locals.
The Golden Hoard wasn’t an Empire that spent most of their time breathing down your neck and setting major policies in their capital, instead they ruled indirectly via tributary states. They would basically allow your kingdom to exist and kinda do its own thing as long as you paid your taxes, and one special boy kingdom was allowed the honor of collecting the taxes. The special boy of our story is the Grand Duchy of Moscow, which will overtime be upgraded to the Principality of Moscow, to the Grand Principality of Moscow as they steadily get more and more powerful, using the privileges they got as the Mongol’s special boys to eventually grow their military and economy.
Eventually they were able to push back the Mongols (assisted by the Golden Hordes constant civil wars), and by the time of Ivan the III aka Ivan the Great, the state was independent and a massive nation. Ivan III is kinda seen as the first independent Ruler of Russia, where Russia exists in its own right and not just as a Mongolian Tributary state. Ivan’s grandson, Ivan the IV, aka Ivan the Vasilyevich, aka Ivan Grozny, aka Ivan the Terrible eventually decided that the Title of Grand Prince wasn’t quite good enough and so it was he who formally turned the state into an Empire, giving himself the title of Tsar, after brutally conquering all the people around him. And so the Russian Empire was born between Ivan the Great and Ivan the Terrible, go figure.
(Ivan the Terrible, Very stable man)
So Ok, Russia is an independent Empire, but under Ivan the IV it becomes more than that, it becomes the Orthodox State. Let me walk back a bit. Christianity first super huge split was in 1054, where the Eastern Greek Speaking Orthodox Church broke apart from the Western Latin Speaking Roman Catholic Church. The Catholics have the Pope, who manage to establish himself as a religious power greater than even Kings, while the east had the Patriarch, whose power was limited by the Emperor? What Emperor you say? Well time to talk about the Byzantine Emperor
Patriarch (left) Pope (right)
So the Byzantines are the dominant supreme cultural power of the East right? Well by the time of the Mongols, not so much. The great city of Constantinople was sacked in 1204 by the 4th Crusade, in one of the greatest own goals in history, and the Empire was in a state of decline ever since. And I mean actual decline, not Edward Gibbon (your decline is almost a thousand years) decline, which was pretty upsetting for the Rus, the other great Orthodox power (Ok I see you Bulgaria and Romania, you’ll get your own episodes another time calm down), and as Byzantine declined, Muscovy keep taking on more and more of the role as “big Orthodox power of the east”. But the striking blow came when Constantinople fell in 1453 to the Ottoman Empire under Mehmed the II aka Mehmed the Conqueror, bringing a final end to the Byzantine empire…ok there were a few splinter states but Mehmet gets them 20 years later so once and for all Byzantines are gone.
(Mehmet II preparing to destroy Byzantinium)
SO I cannot empathizes enough how much of a blow this is to the Orthidox World. The Byzantine Empire was THE Orthidox power for over a thousand years, it was the center of the Orthidox world.Consantinople had been the center of the Orthodox church since Constantine himself, it's like Rome turning Muslim or Mecca Christian, like this is a theological crisis. However, the Grand Principality of Moscow was eager to take on the role of center of the Orthodox Church, and Ivan the Great started to call Moscow “The Third Rome” to succeed the Byzantines as the Byzantines had “succeed” the Romans (despite being Roman…look i never said it is smart). This is why Russia’s coat of Arms is the two headed eagle of the Byzantines. His grandson Ivan Grozny unified the Principality into a strong centralized autocratic state through the power of brutal oppression and secret police, creating the Russian Empire. Later the Patriarch would relocate there, effectively the closest thing to the head of the Orthodox church, making Moscow the new center of the Orthodox faith.
As the "Third Rome" Russia wasn't just an Empire, it had a divine mandate to take territory and spread the Orthidox Faith. The notion of this Russian style Manifest Destiny is going to come up again in this series, and it has never completely left the Russian National identiy.
Ivan took the title of Tsar which means Caesar as in Emperor. As an Empire rather than a Principality, the “Divine Mandate” of Russia became to serve as the protector of the Orthodox Church, to reunify the old Kievan Rus, and restore Constantinople. Like most empires, including the Mongol, the Russian Empire is based on the notion that they have a divine right to rule over everybody else. This dream was put aside for the Time of Troubles, a civil war so horrific that it makes Game of Thrones look peaceful, but after that confusion Russia was ready to go (this is where the Royal family goes from Ruik to Romanov) This is not going to be an extensive look at all of Tsarist Russia, just the stuff which I think is important to understand for Ukraine. Colonization, the Tsar and Serfdom.

"No podía ir a ninguna parte.

In several famous passages in The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Edward Gibbon described the balance between credulity and scepticism in late classical antiquity:
Credulity performed the office of faith; fanaticism was permitted to assume the language of inspiration, and the effects of accident or contrivance were ascribed to supernatural causes . . .
In modern times [Gibbon is writing in the middle eighteenth century], a latent and even involuntary scepticism adheres to the most pious dispositions. Their admission of supernatural truths is much less an active consent than a cold and passive acquiescence. Accustomed long since to observe and to respect the invariable order of Nature, our reason, or at least our imagination, is not sufficiently prepared to sustain the visible action of the Deity. But in the first ages of Christianity the situation of mankind was extremely different. The most curious, or the most credulous, among the pagans were often persuaded to enter into a society which asserted an actual claim of miraculous powers. The primitive Christians perpetually trod on mystic ground, and their minds were exercised by the habits of believing the most extraordinary events. They felt, or they fancied, that on every side they were incessantly assaulted by daemons, comforted by visions, instructed by prophecy, and surprisingly delivered from danger, sickness, and from death itself, by the supplications of the church . . .
It was their firm persuasion that the air which they breathed was peopled with invisible enemies; with innumerable daemons, who watched every occasion, and assumed every form, to terrify, and above all to tempt, their unguarded virtue. The imagination, and even the senses, were deceived by the illusions of distempered fanaticism; and the hermit, whose midnight prayer was oppressed by involuntary slumber, might easily confound the phantoms of horror or delight which had occupied his sleeping and his waking dreams . . .
[T]he practice of superstition is so congenial to the multitude that, if they are forcibly awakened, they still regret the loss of their pleasing vision. Their love of the marvellous and supernatural, their curiosity with regard to future events, and their strong propensity to extend their hopes and fears beyond the limits of the visible world, were the principal causes which favoured the establishment of Polytheism. So urgent on the vulgar is the necessity of believing, that the fall of any system of mythology will most probably be succeeded by the introduction of some other mode of superstition . . .

So crazy to learn that the scene where Principal Aguefort shoots Mr. Gibbons and himself was completely and entirely improvised on the spot to fix a bad situation because THAT was the scene that really hooked me on the series
I fully thought Brennan intended for pc's to die in that fight, that's how perfectly executed that felt

Bardo Pond — Volume 9 (Fire Records)
As its title indicates, Volume 9 is the ninth in a series of releases, dating back to 2000, of outtakes, jams and Bardo Pond-related sonic ephemera. But while most of the earlier Volumes were originally made and distributed independently by the band (on CDr, in small batches), Volume 9 has been released by Bardo Pond’s current label Fire Records on vinyl and as a digital download. The new (sorta) record makes visible Fire’s ongoing reissue campaign of the Volumes, including a number on vinyl of various splashy shades. That enterprise may principally be a collector’s fixation, and one might wonder about the relative value of the music, beyond the layers of insider hipness, the fluorescent orange records and the many, many 15-minute-plus explorations of deep and dark psychic terrain.
The relatively higher profile of its release implies that something is different about Volume 9, and the record makes good on that gesture. To be sure, if one listens to some of the earlier Volumes, there’s a charm to their shaggy-dog quality; see Volume 3, which wanders elliptically from informal studio jams like “Sifaka” to intensely stoned improv meditations like “Lomand” — sounds, one imagines, of a typical weekend at Lemur House in the early Aughts. Volume 9, on the other hand, feels like a more sonically focused affair, and the record makes more sense as a record, rather than just a collection of moments, however winning or blissed out.
Tracks on the first side — the long-ish (by Bardo standards, anyway, for whom songs don’t get really long until you top 20 minutes) “Conjunctio” and “The Nine Doubts” — were both recorded with Philly percussionist Michael Zanghi, likely best known as the drummer in the Violators, Kurt Vile’s live and frequent backing band. On these recordings, Zanghi leans into Eastern textures and flavors. There are suggestions of tabla in “Conjunctio,” along with tambourine and other hand-held percussive instruments. The Gibbons brothers’ fuzzed and fucked-with guitars dominate, as ever, but Bardo listeners who dig it when Isobel Sollenberger picks up her flute (and if you don’t, what are you doing listening to the band in the first place?) will want to tune into her playing, which hangs at the edge of the mix, spectral and mournful.
While “Conjunctio” suggests a bare melody and spends the rest of its time floating in the general area of that suggestion, “War is Over” is far more grounded in harmonic statement and something approaching song form. Two versions of the song appear on Volume 9: a three-minute statement and a twenty-one minute exploration of the statement’s potential. Both are evocative, yearning, a little melancholy. But the long version is the real deal, and for listeners attracted to the band’s sludgy psychedelia, it’s a terrific experience. Few bands are able to combine deliberation and slow accumulation with ecstatic abandon like Bardo Pond, and “War is Over” works that dynamic masterfully. While the song does not achieve the transcendent chaos of some of the band’s most sublime performances (see their cover of “Maggot Brain,” for instance, but buckle up), its fealty to its basic melodic structure makes it special and beautiful in different ways.
Volume 9 might not be the best way in to Bardo Pond’s particular powers and pleasures for the novice, but for anyone already familiar with the band’s remarkable music, the record is more than just a number for the completist. You’ll play it. And it will fill you with the peculiar, sometimes magnificent, sometimes terrifying joy that only Bardo Pond can create.

After a diligent inquiry, I can discern four principal causes of the ruin of Rome, which continued to operate in a period of more than a thousand years. I. The injuries of time and nature. II. The hostile attacks of the Barbarians and Christians. III. The use and abuse of the materials. And, IV. The domestic quarrels of the Romans.
— Edward Gibbon, The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, ch lxxi, "Four Causes of Decay and Destruction" (1776)
