"Captain Amelia design exploration via an animation test.
2000
After spending some time designing Amelia, I started an animation test, as we normally do.
Emma Thompson was the voice actor and the design had a similar facial bone structure to her.
These first few drawings are from the animation test.
After it was completed the directors viewed it and felt it wasn’t appealing enough. Perhaps she came off too “cold”, not enough charm.
I drew over these poses with some new design ideas, which are shown in the following drawings here.
Also, the last few drawings show my thumbnails that’d I’d sketched before animating, as I listened to Thompson’s voice performance (all on 2 pages).
(Based on my sketches here, I’d always thought her hair was going to be black. I was surprised when I saw the eventual color model)."
