Jason Mowen waited until he was 45 to buy his first house. But this interior designer’s choice of a weatherboard cottage in the country four-and-half-hours north of Sydney was a surprise to many. “My friends thought I was crazy, but the more people told me not to do it, the more determined I became,” Jason says today, sitting in his elegant book-lined living room in Murrurundi, a NSW town famous for the thoroughbred studs dotted throughout the area.

The horse connection is an important one in this story. Based in Sydney’s inner-city Darlinghurst for a decade, Jason is the first to admit that on the surface his decision to opt for rural life was a surprising one, until you learn he grew up on a property in the rolling green hills around Maleny in Queensland.

“My mother and grandfather used to breed racehorses and I remember her speaking of Murrurundi when I was a kid.  Then I went to university in Armidale in the early 90s and I always remembered this quaint little town with the long name that I used to drive through on my way to Sydney,” he explains.

“I drove through again in late 2015 and just fell in love with the place.  It felt unspoiled: it wasn’t gentrified nor ruined with bad development.  It was also really affordable and I loved that no-one back in Sydney had heard of it.”

On top of Jason’s lists of requirements was a place where his mother Jicky would also be happy to spend time. This meant any prospective new home needed to be in an area where this accomplished horsewoman’s beloved horses could be nearby — four of them are now on agistment in a nearby paddock — and so the search for a house began. Luckily, Jason was prepared to be patient because it was nearly a year before the right one came along.

Walking around the garden on a late afternoon, it’s easy to understand why, even though he had not originally planned to live in the property full time, Jason soon began to find it harder and harder to leave this quiet sanctuary with its abandoned tennis court and majestic pine trees soaring into the sky.

“In late 2019, I decided to give up the apartment I’d been renting for 10 years in Darlinghurst and move to the home I loved, and owned, in Murrurundi, as I felt I could do much of my work remotely,” he explains.

Built in 1905, the house is called Dovecot — a name Jason was originally puzzled by until he learnt more about its past. “There is no actual dovecot [a structure for housing doves or pigeons] so I couldn’t understand why it had been named that until I discovered it was built by a man named George Dove — so, house of the Dove — which I absolutely love. I bought the house from his granddaughter, Judy, who was born and lived all her life here.  It has a really good energy.  Judy was a lovely person, greatly esteemed in Murrurundi, and there was obviously a lot of love in this house over the years.”

Jason is gradually learning more and more about the history of Dovecot — just as he is with his holiday home in Italy. “Dovecot was my first house and then, just a few years later, I decided to buy a holiday place in Europe,” says Jason. After discovering how successfully he can work remotely from Murrurundi, he is hoping to spend three months a year at his second le casa — one half of a rustic palazzo dating back to 1580 — in Matino in Puglia.

“I see my life in the future, once things get back to normal, as living between Matino and Murrurundi. I’ve always been a bit of a gypsy and usually spend five to seven years in a place before moving on but I do love Murrurundi. It allows you to be quieter, which is great for inspiring both creativity and contentment.  And being surrounded by such great beauty — the beauty of this wonderful old home and garden and the surrounding natural beauty of the mountains and landscape — I’ve lived all over the world and it just doesn’t get better than that.”

Let’s look at 4 of the most common balcony and veranda scenarios and matcht hem to some of our modern retractable awning options.

Scenario 1: Patio or balcony with no roof

In our first scenario we discuss solutions for a typical town house or apartment patio or balcony with no roof or overhead structure.

The most popular style of awning for open patios or apartment balcony sunshades is the folding arm awning, also often referred to as fold out awnings, extendable awnings or retractable awnings.

As the name suggests, these outdoor awnings have 2 or more spring tensioned folding arms that extend out from the cassette of the awning and while doing so pull out a fabric cover which unrolls to provide shade. The awning cassette is attached to the side of thebuilding using one of the many bracket options markilux provides.

markilux has 12 different styles of folding arm awnings, each style providing unique design elements which allow you to select and customise any of the awnings exactly to your requirements and taste.

markilux folding arm awnings are able to cover an area from 2.5 metres up to 13 metres wide, extending out as far as 4 metres. The biggest attraction or design feature of the retractable awning is that they require no structure to support the arms or fabric cover and hence, when retracted, cause minimal visual impact on the building and surrounding environment.

Outdoor retractable awnings could also help protect your balcony from rain, as long as they are set to a pitch of at least 15 degrees to provide water runoff. Their primary role is to provide comfortable shade in which you can relax or enjoy a barbecue while entertaining friends.

The pergola awning cassette is mounted onto a fixed structure, usually a house or building and has 2 robust tracks extending out from the cassette that are supported by posts at their extremities. The awning fabric extends between the tracks and is secured on all 4 sides, reducing its ability to flap or billow in the wind.  

Due to the robust nature of the markilux pergola awning system it can withstand a higher wind load than a similar size folding arm awning. With a sufficient pitch the pergola awning can also offer substantial protection against rain and inclement weather. The markilux patio awning can be fitted with various dimmable lighting options which allow you to entertain late into the night. They are able to accommodate an extendable front valance on the front of the etractable shade awning to protect you from low lying sun.

Scenario 2: Patio or balcony with existing roof

In our second scenario we consider shading options for a balcony or patio which has an existing roof, yet still requires stylish but discreet sun or rain protection on 1 or more sides.

A popular solution used to provide shade or protection from the heat, wind or rain on a balcony is to attach a markilux retractable, external roller blind to the underside of the balcony above. The window blinds can also be face fitted onto an existing wall. These units enable the fabric to travel vertically down thus providing sunshading and weather protection.  

The latest tensioned zip track external blinds offer a reliable and robust solution to windy conditions by providing support to the fabric on all 4 sides using the markilux tracfix system. markilux window awnings are able to span a width up to 6 metres wide in 1 awning and extend down up to 6 metres, depending on fabric selection.  

A less obtrusive solution is to mount the markilux 930 swing open-style folding arm awning onto the underside of the balcony above, or face fit it to a wall. This designer awning with a unique pivot arm mechanism is able to extend vertically down at 80 degrees from the horizontal. That’s 10 degrees from vertical! The big advantage of the markilx 930 swing awning is that when retracted there are no guide wires or tracks visible at the end of the balcony. A truly discreet solution that is often overlooked by designers opting for a more conventional outdoor blind solution.

Scenario 3: Veranda or patio with a roof and 2 or more walls

In our third scenario we look at shading and overall weather protection options for patios or verandas with a roof and walls on 2 or more sides. This results in the creation of large openings up to 6 meters wide and up to 4 meters high on the remaining sides.

Patios or verandas with a roof and 2 or more walls usually already offer a high degree of protection to occupants with built in lighting, heating, seating, dining areas and often also a cooking or BBQ area. Often the biggest drawback is that these verandas or patios get dirt, dust and leaves blown onto them through the large openings resulting in the furniture and floor requiring thorough cleaning every weekend before the patio can be used.  

Apart from dust, other outside elements like wind, rain and animals can also get in through the openings of the veranda. This severely restricts use of the outdoor space to fair weather or daytime only. To improve utilisation of the outdoor area by making it less weather dependent, as well as considerably reduce work required to clean the area it is quite the prudent investment to install large markilux tracfix retractable vertical awnings.  

These awnings can cover large areas up to 6 metres wide with a single outdoor blind. markilux outdoor awnings have tensioned fabric covers running in a special tracfix support system giving the fabric cover unsurpassed tension in windy conditions. One push of a button lowers the awnings, sealing off the patio and veranda to the wind, heat, cold or rain. When use of the veranda is required again another push of the button raised the awnings and presents a clean veranda readyf or immediate enjoyment.

Scenario 4: narrow balconies facing North, East or West

In our fourth and final scenario we discuss shading protection for narrow Juliet style balconies facing North, East or West. In these orientations, the sun is able to shine directly into the building through large windows and doors heating up the house or damaging floors and furniture.

A quaint yet practical solution is to install a markilux drop arm awning over the window or door. Controlling the amount of sun shading is achieved by raising or lowering the awning to optimise shading while maximising the view. An added benefit with drop arm awnings is that their design allows fresh, cool air to circulate between the awning fabric and the building enhancing shading efficiency.

Another shading solution is to install a markilux window awning so that it covers the window or door effectively giving the window a second external skin. This external shade protection stops heat from reaching the window or entering the building and is therefore much more efficient at keeping the building cool and stopping UV rays from damaging furniture, fabrics, carpets and paintings.
