Plant of the Day
Wednesday 3 July 2024
The two annuals Calendula officinalis 'Neon' (pot marigold) and Orlaya grandiflora (white laceflower) were creating a show in a bed adjacent to the wildflower meadow of Great Dixter, Sussex, providing an additional food source for pollinators.

Yes, I'm still seed collecting! Today the lovely Calendula pods with lovely, bright blooms in sunny colors and heights. From the short bush varieties to the tall stately plants. Next year, I'm going to be scattering these seeds everywhere in my yard, front and back! Calendula bloom from July right up until a hard frost in late October.

This pot marigold opens it's flowers at day and slowly closes itself at night. The flower stocks also wiggle around. :) I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. I'm thankful for all the nature around me and I wish for a better world for everyone.

Plant of the Day
Tuesday 17 September 2024
In this vegetable garden these Calendula officinalis (common marigold, goldins, Mary's gold, pot marigold, Scotch marigold) plants provide a slash of colour and a food source for pollinators. This fast growing annual or biennial has aromatic leaves and long succession of flowers from summer into the autumn until the first frosts.

i think that unfortunately part of marigold genuinly is happy and satisfied with what's happened to them!!! and that while they fought as hard as they could to escape and leave in those early days, they really unfortunately *are* happier (in a manner of speaking) in the gardens
it's only after the princess definetivly cuts their thread that they let themself even think about escape again. and even then, they don't put in active effort until someone else comes for them because they don't want to be uprooted again. their entire life has been spent being uprooted and repotted in different gardens. they had hoped that this Garden would be their last. a lovely little greenhouse they could spend their days in. but they knew the warning signs, could tell when they had fallen from the Princess' favor, and when what would happen next. They didn't even leave for their own sake, it was for the sake of someone else. To help the escaped bird as much as they could.
Even at the end, they still didn't want to leave. Tried to hold onto her for as long as they could. it may be hell, and it may have taken sight, memory, and strength from them, but it was a place that kept them. somewhere they were always brought back. never told to wear their nicest clothes and then handed off to a semi-stanger to never see their previous life ever again. the Princess always put them right back into their cage, and punished those who tried to take Marigold. what more could they ever want? They should have known not even this could last. She found someone else, and when he deserted her, she had no more fondness left for Marigold.
And that last time of being uprooted is what eventually kills them. Something about the Cage Gardens was sustaining them. Perhaps it was the climate, behaps it was bees, perhaps it was their love for the Princess, or perhaps the stress of moving again was what caused it. But outside of the Gardens their health deteriorates quickly.
Everytime you repot a plant you risk it dying, not taking. Especially if it had been in dire conditions before. Even the hardiest of flowers can only handle so much
