John Singer Sargent (American, 1856-1925) • Portrait of Louise Pomeroy Inches • 1887 • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Evening Dress • Unidentified Maker • American • Silk velvet with silk plain weave lining
Tumblr media
How wonderful that such a well-preserved dress exists to enliven a famous portrait painting! This dress is one of my favorites for a couple of reasons – firstly, I love velvet and this silk velvet is the real deal – gorgeous. Secondly, I've seen the portrait many times at the MFA in Boston. The dress was in a glass case at the blockbuster Fashioned by Sargent exhibition also at the MFA.
I've read that Louise Inches was expecting her third child when she sat for this portrait and that the dress had been designed to accommodate extra panels as her figure expanded. She and Sargent got on well. Both were music lovers and accomplished musicians.

I had the pleasure of watching a beautiful Chinese crime drama called 'Under the Skin'. This was on someone's recommended list on Tumblr and I'm always excited to check out new shows and stories from Asian countries. Boldly I set out to start this show and what a beautiful ride it has been. Tan Jian Ci as Shen Yi and Jin Shi Jia as Du Cheng was truly a wonderful pairing.
There were so many stories surrounding women and involving women that I was surprised and happy to see how the cases were solved. There were some far reaching elements in the plot occasionally but then which crime drama doesn't have these unbelievable elements.
I loved this show because it brought into focus a side of investigation that we rarely see on screen - Portraitist, the one who sketches and brings to life the person from just a description. Shen Yi was a well rounded character with great motivation to do what he did as an artist and Du Cheng was equally compelling as the officer who strove to fight for justice.

These are some of the paintings and sketches Shen Yi drew and we see this in the last scene of the last episode. He kept a record of all the cases he was involved in and look how beautifully he brought out the pain and joy involved in each story.

And we were left with this cliffhanger and I heard there's a season 2 that they've been considering and talking about. I'd be delighted to watch season 2 of Under the Skin. If anyone wants to watch something different, give this show a chance.
A hearty thanks to @lurkingshan for the recommendation. I'll probably get to all the other recommendations soon.

Portrait of Francis I of Austria
Artist: Thomas Lawrence (English, 1769-1830)
Date: 1818-1819
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Royal Collection Trust, Windsor Castle
DESCRIPTION
Thomas Lawrence was the most fashionable portraitist of his generation in Britain. He was made Principal Painter to George III in 1792 after Sir Joshua Reynolds’s death, and received occasional commissions; however it was only after 1814 that George IV began to employ him in earnest.
This portrait of the Emperor of Austria was commissioned by George IV at a cost of 500 guineas. Lawrence ventured across Europe to undertake the King's commission of a group of portraits of the allied military and political leaders involved in the Napoleonic Wars. Although Lawrence met the Emperor during the Congresses of Aix-la-Chapelle and Vienna in 1818-9, the dates during which he undertook this painting itself are not known, as it remained in the artist's studio at his death in 1830.
The Emperor is shown in military uniform with his plumed hat on a table beside him; the riband and star of the Order of the Garter worn under that of the Golden Fleece. In addition to enabling him to render details of military dress with accuracy, the artist attached particular importance to capturing his sitters from life, in order to imbue a sense of liveliness. The Emperor’s countenance, he described as 'rather long and thin, and when grave, is grave to melancholy; but when he speaks, benevolence itself lights it up with the most agreeable expressions, and making it the perfect image of a good mind.’ (letter of 5 November 1818).The conception of this group of twenty-eight portraits began in 1814 when George IV

Painting to Dress Match-up: Queen Maria's portrait and her Romanian traditional outfits
Tumblr media
A 1924 photograph of artist Philip de László, Queen Maria of Romania and the royal portrait by de László, London, England
Tumblr media
Philip de László (Hungarian, ) • Queen Maria of Romania • 1924
I'm only today beginning to read about her, though it appears from photographs as well as a couple of existing gowns, that she was a very well dressed woman.

She was passionate about Romanian folk art and costume. There are number of photos online of Maria in traditional Romanian outfits, which were her preferred attire for daytime wear.

Nordic Summer's Evening #RichardBergh #Duke of #Närke, PrinceEugen of #Sweden and #Norway and singer #KarinPyk stand on the balcony of a house in #Kyrkviken on the Island of #Lidingö (#Stockholm). They have turned away from us and are looking out over a stretch of water that has a calm, mirror-like aspect. Behind them a marvelous #panorama opens up. It is #sunset and we see the last of the evening’s orange light on the surface of the water and the #forest in the background. #NordicSummerEvening is one of the most famous paintings of Swedish #painter, #portraitist, #landscapist, and #writer #RichardBergh. Although it is not directly a #ValentinesDay painting, Nordic Summer Evening has something that makes it perfect for this day. I think it is because of the #mystery behind it. It looks like something may be going on between the two characters, but what exactly? Are they at the beginning of the #romance? Or, on the opposite, is their #relationship already established? Is it secretive, or are they bound by some social conventions? That's the unknown! — #DailyArt 170 × 223.5 cm #OilOnCanvas #GothenburgMuseumOfArt #Göteborg, #Sverige (at Stockholm, Sweden) https://www.instagram.com/p/Coqh9sdpaMB/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
