Portrait of Emperor Franz I of Austria
Artist: Leopold Kupelwieser (Austrian, 1796â1862)
Date: About 1830
Medium: Oil on Canvas
Collection: Military History Museum, Vienna, Austria
Emperor Franz I of Austria
Franz Joseph Karl (12 February 1768 in Florence; 2 March 1835 in Vienna) from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine was the last Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire from 1792 to 1806 as Franz II. In 1804 he founded the Austrian Empire, which he ruled as Franz I until his death.
In order to counter the hegemony of the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte in Central Europe and to prevent a loss of status, he assumed the title of hereditary Emperor of Austria in 1804 , but continued to use the title of Elected Roman Emperor, at all times Increaser of the Empire , until 1806. In literature he is therefore often called Francis II/I, to distinguish him from his grandfather Francis I Stephen .
His declaration of abdication on 6 August 1806, in which he laid down "the German imperial crown and the imperial government" and released "the electors, princes and other estates, as well as all members and the imperial servants, from their previous duties", was motivated by the fear that the imperial crown could fall into French hands and that his Austrian lands in the empire could de jure come under Napoleonic rule. In fact, the empire - already only a very loose union - was broken up by the Confederation of the Rhine , founded in 1806 at Napoleon's instigation, whose princes left the empire. The abdication of the imperial crown is therefore considered confirmation of the dissolution of the empire, even if it did not constitute a corresponding legal act.
Until his death in 1835, Emperor Franz also remained King of Bohemia , Croatia and Hungary. His power base remained the Habsburg hereditary lands.

Born on This Day: Franz Joseph I.
On this day, 18th August 1830., was born Franz Joseph I., the longest-ruling and the most beloved Emperor of Austria-Hungary. Emperorâs 68-year long rule was in fact the third-longest in history of Europe. His long rule was based on the union of ancient Divine Right and the modern Parliamentary Right. As a child Franz Joseph worshipped his grandfather, who died when he was almost five years old.âŠ

"Bella gerunt alii, tu felix Austria nube!"
Day 6 of @spaus-week 's challenge
"Let others wage war, you, happy Austria, marry!" Was the political strategy of the Habsburgs, and marry did the House of Austria! Infamously, scandalously, sensationally. A mangled wreath of a family tree. We all know this horror story. And we all know the bitter end.
After Emperor Charles V&I divided his Spanish and Austrian inheritance ((also gained through his parents' and grandparents' marriages)) to his descendants and those of his younger brother Ferdinand I respectively, the Habsburg dynasty split into two branches. The Spanish and Austrian Habsburgs notoriously intermarried for generations, right up till Charles II of Spain whose heirless death in 1700 sparked the War of the Spanish Succession. The inbreeding and this informal Latin motto behind it has been blamed to hell and back for their implosion, for the physical ugliness that ran in this royal bloodline. But it is not to say the Habsburgs never went to war, nor that dynastic marriage was a political strategy unique to them! But they were, if anything, bloody successful at it seeing how they did rule half of Europe for 200 years, and then a lot of it in the Austrian line for another 200. Before anyone figured out inbreeding was bad it was considered a privilege to marry into the Habsburgs, with Louis XV claiming that Louis XVI's betrothal to Marie Antoinette was marrying the "Daughter of the Caesars", and Napoleon Bonaparte infamously ditching Josephine for Marie Louise. Charles II was a poor sod who took the fall and the mugs were wretched from the same ugly gene being passed around countless times*, but they did wear power and privilege well.
đ
âš Symbolism bc I'm a NERD and this my Category 10 autism event âšđ
:
Charles V & Ferdinand I's joint portrait based on that propaganda woodcut, behind them the colours of the Habsburg flag.
The Spanish branch, comprising Charles V & I's descendants, is represented with a black background, and the Austrian branch, comprising Ferdinand I's descendants, gold, both colours pulled from their flag, a dynasty intertwined but split in two.
Round frames denote that the individual had no heirs.
Only the most influential ruler on both sides, the King of Spain and the Holy Roman Emperor, are represented as framed portraits, explaining Archduke Charles II's unframed depiction.
The unconventional placement of Charles II of Spain and Emperor Rudolf II's nameplates are a nod to their queerness: their intersexuality and bisexuality respectively.
Ferdinand III's portrait is lopsided because of the losses of the 30 Years War.
Cracks in Charles II's portrait: đđđ
#Was this just an excuse for me to draw the family tree/wreath? YES. I apologize for how incredibly specific and niche this is, but aahhhh whenever people call rbr Seb a "boy king", I can literally only think about this statuette:
1. Because I think it gives the same angelic but mischievous vibe as Seb

~ Rumors About Our Daughter ~ (fan fiction requested by @historical-epic)
Rumors questioning Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austriaâs legitimacy have been circulating within the Austrian Court. What do her parents think about this? What do they do?
Characters: Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria, Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, Empress Elisabeth of Austria
Valerie heard her mother talking to a random maid servant in the drawing room of their summer home Kaiservilla in Bad Ischl. Thought it sounded more like arguing to her.
âDonât you dare make such treasonous accusations!â Elisabeth shouted, loud enough for 8 year old Valerie to make out what she said.Â
âY-Y-Your MajestyâŠ.I didnât mean toâŠI was just implying thatâ
âWhat, that my daughter is illegitimate? That her father is not The Emperor? How dare you!â
Valerie had never heard her mother this angry before. It was quite shocking, more shocking than the rumors of her own illegitimacy.Â
These rumors were swirling in and out of Kaiservilla for months now, mostly the fancy talk of lower servants. When the imperial family arrived, the servants had to be more careful about their gossiping and shut out their willful thoughts as these thoughts could imprison them for life, or even worse, death.
Emperor Franz Joseph I was married to Duchess Elisabeth of Bavaria, who later became Empress Elisabeth of Austria by marriage. But everyone close to her called her either Mother or Sisi.Â
Together they had four children. Archduchess Sophie, who died young, Gisela, Rudolf, and Marie-Valerie. They all lived somewhat happy lives although there were problems in all.
Franz and Sisi had to bear the burden of ruling an all powerful Austro-Hungarian empire, Rudolf had to bear the burden of being heir, Gisela had to bear the burden of being unloved by her parents (it was very complicated), and Valerie now had to bear the burden of various rumors spreading about who her real father was.
There are plenty of servants and nobles who live at Kaiservilla and that means that there are various mouths to blab whatever they want about whoever they want.Â
A few months ago, the topic of Empress Sisi and her lover Count AndrĂĄssy was being spoken about and somebody mustâve put together that Valerie might not have been her fatherâs daughter.
These were obviously just nonsensical rumors because Valerie was Franzâs child. She was legitimate.Â
But Valerie herself didnât know that and neither did all of the servants who had been blabbing their mouths off for months.Â
âGet out of my sight! Sisi practically screamed at the frightened chamber maid who unfortunately gossiped at the wrong time to a footman.
The maid scurried off and Sisi sat down on the nearest chair and was trying to hold in tears.
âMama..â Valerie walked in from the other room. âWas that maid talking about me?â She asked.
âOh darlingâ Sisi held out her hands to embrace the trembling young girl who started to cry.
âDonât pay any mind to what that filthy servant said. It was all lies and it wasnât true at all.â
Sisi stroked her daughterâs unruly dark brown hair and continued to do so until Valerie broke the embrace.
âBut MamaâŠI heard it allâŠI donât know what this all means.â Valerie was on the verge of hysterics.Â
Seeing her mother so upset ignited something in her that is usually hidden away. It made her angry and confused and utterly upset.
âValerie darlingâ Sisi soothed. âAll you have to believe is that you are your fatherâs daughter, you are my daughter. If somebody said that you arenât then shame on them!âÂ
Sisi gave her youngest daughter a little playful slap which turned the sad frown on Valerieâs face into the wide smile that would be seen playing outside with her dogs or drawing pictures with her mother.
âYou are Archduchess Marie Valerie of Austria, youngest daughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria, King of Hungary. That is who you are and you canât listen to anybody if they say otherwise, especially the nasty servants who gossip.â Sisi softly placed a hand on Valerieâs face.
âOkay Mama, I love you very much.â The two hugged firmly again.
âNext time Valerie, donât eavesdrop okay?â Sisi said strictly, but with a laugh.â
âOkay Mama!â Sighed smart Valerie as she skipped out of the room.
~
Later that night, when Valerie was doing her nighttime prayers, Sisi was informing Franz about the events of the day.
âFranz, darling,â Sisi spoke to her husband who was sitting calmly on the bed taking his boots off.
âMany people are questioning Valerieâs legitimacy, today I caught a maid servant gossiping with a footman. Iâm greatly concerned.â Sis went over to sit next to Franz who wrapped his arm around her.
âDarling, you know those rumors are false. I remember the night we conceived. It couldnât possibly be anyone else. What makes you so worried?â Franz said
Sisi wanted to say that the rumors were specifically stating that Count AndrĂĄssy was the suspected father and that she never did anything with him except one small kiss, but she couldnât say that to her husband.Â
She loved Franz and AndrĂĄssyâs kiss brought her no affectionate feelings, minus disgust and anger, but this was just not the right time.
That was a story for another day.
Sisi decided to tell Franz the truth about half of the worries about this situation.
âIâm worried because Valerie was in the other room and she could hear me yelling at that maid.â Sisi was close to tears.
âShe has never heard me that angry before and she came up to me afterword and was quite distressed...â Sisi wept into Franzâs arms while he gently stroked her back.
They might not have been passionate soulmates, but after all these years of marriage, Franz still loved Sisi, and the feeling was mutual.
âSisi darling hush now, I will talk to her, I promise.â Franz stated his wife in the eye and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead.
He then exited the room and let Sisi undress peacefully.
As Franz was walking to Valerieâs rooms, he couldnât stop himself from thinking more deeply about the rumors.
Why would anyone think that Valerie is not my daughter?
Valerie heard a sudden knock on her bedroom door.
âValerie, darling, itâs Papa, can I come in?â
âEnter.â Valerie spoke softly as her nanny calmly put the book away and exited the room.
Franz came in and slowly sat down on Valerieâs bed.
âWhatâs wrong Papa?â Valerie noticed the solemn look on her fatherâs usually joyful face. At least he was joyful when she was around.
âValerieâŠâ Franz spoke in a nervous but fairly calm tone. âMother told me about what happened today.â
Valerieâs face fell into a sad frown.
âDoes everyone think like that maid thinks?â She said desperately. âMama says that I shouldnât listen to themâŠbut I did.â
âOh Valerie my dearest,â Franz wrapped his daughter in a tight embrace and rocked her around like he did when she was a baby.Â
âLook in my eyes, Valerie, you are my daughter. Nothing can or will ever change that.â Franz was disgusted by these ugly rumors. His heart knew that Sisi couldâve and wouldâve been unfaithful at times, and he couldâve been too. But he knew deep down in his heart that Valerie was his child, nothing could convince him otherwise.
âPapa is that really the truth?â Valerie asked longingly.
âDarling,â Franz cooed. âIt will forever be the truth.â
âOh Papa I love you so much!â Valerie gave her father a kiss on the cheek and a tight squeeze before hopping under her covers.
Franz kissed the little girl goodnight and exited calmly.
He knew that everything was going to be okay, and if not, he would take care of it.

My academic hot take: There is a very real frustration in studying an "obscure" topic that increases the feeling of distance between you and "laymen" (aka anyone who isn't your advisor/someone studying the same thing.)
And I certainly don't begrudge people who have a more accessible or widely known topic. It's just a fact that the question "what is your dissertation about?" takes way longer to answer when you have to give a 101 lecture first (and you have to calculate whether the person asking is patient enough for that lecture)
#grad school stuff#and i do mean 'obscure' in quotation marks#i study a big european empire#and i still had someone with a PhD in a different subject ask why i was going to Austria to do my dissertation research#when i told me advisor he sighed and said âsometimes you have to call it the Austrian empire for people to understandâ#my answer to what is your dissertation about:#a doomed emperor of a country you had no idea had two empires#from an empire you might know if i call it its post 1867 name#people who study the American civil war dont have this problem
