He started with giving her space. He knew her well enough to know that’s what she needed. And then he started with small things. He left coffee on her doorstep, with little notes on the paper cups. “Will you just forgive him already? I’m tired of tripping over your meals every time I leave the apartment.”

“What happened between you two? It seemed like things were going really well.”

“He’s an asshole. That’s what happened.”

“Did you let him explain or did you just freeze him out?”

Y/N looked at her with contempt, giving her an answer.

“Y/N…” Carol urged.

“He fucking hurt me. For once I felt like I could open up to someone and be myself, and it was all a lie. I don’t know how to forgive him for that. This is exactly why I don’t let people in. They always let you down.”

Carol took in her roommate and saw the pain behind her eyes. She wrapped her arms around Y/N and gently ran a hand down her back in comfort.

“I’m sorry that he hurt you. Just think about letting him explain before you shun him from your life. The last thing I would want is for you to regret this decision years from now. If he is someone you can genuinely see yourself with, the least you can do is give him a chance. Boys are stupid, they make mistakes.”

Y/N let out a deep sigh, “I’ll think about it.”

Bucky had just dropped off breakfast for Y/N when he heard the front door open. He ducked around the corner and hid, hoping it was Y/N leaving for class and he could talk to her and give an explanation. He peeked around the corner and was disappointed to see it was her roommate. She picked up the coffee cup and breakfast sandwich and brought it inside. 

Bucky then thought maybe if he could get through to the roommate, then she would talk to Y/N. He approached the door again and right before he was about to knock, he heard voices coming from the other side of the door.

“Will you just forgive him already? I’m tired of tripping over your meals every time I leave the apartment.” 

“Oh, well I’m so sorry to inconvenience you.” He recognized Y/N’s signature sarcasm immediately.

“What happened between you two? It seemed like things were going really well.”

“He’s an asshole. That’s what happened.” Her words stung, but he had to admit to himself that they were true. 

“Did you let him explain or did you just freeze him out?” 

It was silent for a few moments and Bucky almost considered leaving when Y/N’s roommate spoke again.

“Y/N…”

“He fucking hurt me. For once I felt like I could open up to someone and be myself, and it was all a lie. I don’t know how to forgive him for that. This is exactly why I don’t let people in. They always let you down.”

Bucky’s already weak heart broke even further. Listening to her hurting was even worse than being ignored. He hated himself for doing this to her and he wasn’t even sure he deserved her back at this point. He had to reconsider his position. Maybe it’d be for the best if he just let her go…

Y/N opened the door in the morning and immediately felt her stomach drop when she spotted her empty doorstep. The coffee had stopped showing up a few days ago, yet every morning she peeked out to check if there was something there for her. At first she thought Carol had been taking everything, but when she asked, Carol denied the accusation and immediately became suspicious. It didn’t take long for her roommate to realize she actually cared for the small gifts being left for her.

The worst part was, Y/N hated the idea that he had given up. He messed up, but she didn’t want to lose him. So now she was stuck. She continued on with classes, feeling distracted and disinterested in the course work. She kept peering out the windows, wondering what he was doing and how he was feeling.

When her final class of the week was done, Y/N was fully ready to be curled up in her bed, binge watching Netflix and eating ice cream straight from the container. As she approached her door, she noticed her next door neighbor pulling out his keys to head into his apartment.

“Hey! You…” she called, realizing she didn’t know her neighbor’s name.

“Can I help you?” he asked with a confused look.

“Sorry, what’s your name?” she asked.

“Sam…”

“Sam, you’re friends with Bucky, right?”

“...Yes,” he replied cautiously.

“Have you…seen him lately?”

“Why do you care?”

She sighed, wondering how she was going to pull this off, “Can I buy you a drink? I just want to pick your brain.”

He shrugged and put his keys in his pocket, “I won’t turn down a free beer.”

Once they reached the bar, Y/N ordered them a pitcher of Miller Lite and they sat at a high top. She had never spoken with Sam, aside from when she yelled at him through the wall. 

“So, I need to know more about this dare.”

Sam took a big swig of beer and went into it, “The whole thing was Zemo’s idea. You yelled at us to keep it down and Bucky defended you. Then Zemo dared him to ask you out and Bucky wasn’t on board. I think he eventually gave in just to get him to shut up. I didn’t think he’d go through with it, we certainly weren’t checking in with him. But we were seeing him less and less. He mentioned to us that he was taking you to a party and then he wasn’t coming over as much. I assumed things were going well, and I think Zemo couldn’t let him have the happy ending, which is why he made a comment.”

She pondered her next question, “Was this all just a big joke for him?”

“Not at all. Bucky doesn’t do things for a laugh. He only goes for things he’s serious about. And you were all he could talk about for weeks. It was actually really annoying.”

“Have you seen him recently?”

Sam shook his head, “He’s been spending all his free time trying to win you over.”

She sighed, “Can you make plans with him? See what he’s thinking?”

Sam eyed her, “What do you mean?”

“I just don’t know if he’s still interested.”

“Oh he’s interested. He doesn’t give up that easily.”

She put her head in her hands, “I just don’t know what to do.”

Sam saw her internal struggle and knew he could be of assistance, “Let me help you.”

Y/N turned the cassette in her hands over and over again, studying her handwritten tracklist. Was she really doing this? It was so impossibly cheesy that she couldn’t quite believe she was putting herself out there like this.

When Sam suggested she do something personal for Bucky, to show him she was still interested, she had no idea how to do that. Carol was the one who suggested a mixtape, and it was kind of perfect aside from being completely cliche. Making mixtapes was a habit of hers, but she had never made one for someone else. It took time to perfectly cultivate the contents and Y/N knew if she didn’t act quickly, she’d risk losing Bucky completely.

Y/N knocked on her neighbors door and was immediately face to face with Sam, her messenger. He held up his end of the deal and was meeting Bucky at their regular bar. She didn’t say anything as he opened the door, but merely held out the cassette tape in its clear plastic case.

Sam smiled approvingly, “Here I was expecting a love note, but this is so much better.”

She rolled her eyes, “Just get it to him in a non obvious way. I want it to take him by surprise.”

“And how would you like me to do that?”

“I don’t know, just slide it into the pocket of his leather jacket or something.”

Sam gave her a look and said, “I make no promises, but I’ll do my best.”

“Sorry to drag you into all this, but I do appreciate your help,” she said earnestly.

“It’s all for Buck. He’s helped me out of more jams that you could imagine.”

She nodded and headed back to her apartment door, “Just let me know when you complete the drop.”

Bucky said his goodbye to Sam and closed out his tab at the bar. He tried to shake Y/N from his mind and meeting Sam for a few beers seemed like a good way to do that, but after his third beer he realized that he wasn’t in the mood to be around drunken frat boys.

He walked out of the bar and was met with a chill in the air that hadn’t been there before. He pulled on his black leather jacket. He reached into his pocket in search of a cigarette, thinking that a smoke might help warm him up on his walk home. As he pulled out the pack, he realized it wasn’t a pack at all. It was a plastic case containing a cassette tape. He stopped in his tracks to study the tape. It certainly wasn’t in his pocket when he left for the bar. As he flipped the tape over, he noticed the handwritten tracklist tucked into the case. The handwriting was a unique combination of print and cursive and every lowercase “I” was missing its tittle. As he read through the songs, a small smile crept up his face. He didn’t know all of the tracks, but the few he did recognize were songs he loved. 

Bucky tucked the tape back into his pocket and took off at a run to his car. This mixtape was a message from Y/N, and he had to listen to it as soon as possible.

finding/inventing Dothraki personalities: Rakharo

I’m making a little series where I stare at everything the main Dothraki characters do and try to discern personality traits. The purpose of this is sort of “if you were to write a fanfic that actually fleshed out their characters, what’s a starting point? what is there, that we might not destroy in trying to build something larger?” It is not to claim that GRRM, um, wrote these characters well. But I do dislike rounding down to zero when it’s not literally zero.

For example, Rakharo. I have adopted Rakharo as my favourite of Dany’s bloodriders, and the reason is literally these three lines:

"An hour past midnight should be time enough." "Yes, Khaleesi," said Rakharo. "Time for what?" [belwas] "Why that one, Khaleesi?" Rakharo demanded of her. "He is fat and stupid." "I will not march." "What will you do then, Khaleesi?" asked Rakharo.

They all disagree with her at various times, but Rakharo here is going a step past that to question her: ask why would you choose this, what do your decisions mean? It’s like a first step to learning from her, and on toward thinking for himself. (NB: this does not happen.)

"You are khaleesi," Rakharo said, taking the arakh. "I shall ride at your side to Vaes Dothrak beneath the Mother of Mountains, and keep you safe from harm until you take your place with the crones of the dosh khaleen. No more can I promise."

When Daenerys asks them to become her bloodriders, Jhogo and Aggo just answer the question; Rakharo thinks past that and presents a sort-of compromise: well, here’s what I can do.

Dany gave him charge of a dozen of her strongest men, and set them to pulling up the plaza to get to the earth beneath. ... Given seed, they could make the plaza bloom.

Agriculture is not a traditional occupation of Dothraki men, so arguably she assigned this task to Rakharo’s leadership because he was least likely to balk at breaking tradition for the sake of long-term benefits

"We have seen only the parts of Qarth that Pyat Pree wished us to see," she went on. "Rakharo, go forth and look on the rest, and tell me what you find. Take good men with you—and women, to go places where men are forbidden." "As you say, I do, blood of my blood," said Rakharo.

[waggles hand] it’s, um, it’s being tasked with questioning prepackaged narratives, and, also involving women, in, so, that's,why she delegated this to him not Aggo or Jhogo?

Another lost a hand to Rakharo's arakh and rode off reeling and spurting blood. ... When Rakharo put an arrow through his mouth, the slaves holding his sedan chair broke and ran,

Rakharo switched weapons in the middle of their battle to adapt his tactics to the situation, this is normal IRL but I literally got out my paper copy of Storm to check it wasn't meant to be Aggo lol.

"When cowards hide behind great walls, it is they who are defeated, Khaleesi," Ko Jhogo said. Her other bloodriders concurred. "Blood of my blood," said Rakharo, "when cowards hide and burn the food and fodder, great khals must seek for braver foes. This is known."

Deeply splitting hairs here, but he does give more considerations than Jhogo? The food's important.

When Drogo’s khalasar dissolves, Rakharo describes the events to Daenerys and then adds “It is the right of the strong to take from the weak”: a typical Dothraki opinion, but it's expressed as a slightly more abstract or philosophical stance. (Contrast Jhogo, who puts it as "A khal who cannot ride is no khal" which contains the same idea but keeps to concrete actions.)

She might have struck downriver for the ports at Meereen and Yunkai and Astapor, but Rakharo warned her that Pono's khalasar had ridden that way, driving thousands of captives before them to sell in the flesh marts that festered like open sores on the shores of Slaver's Bay.

Riders have been seen beyond the Skahazadhan. Dothraki scouts, Rakharo says, with a khalasar behind them.

He can even geography/political analysis, sort of? If I were fanficcing I would have him do more of this and get better at it over time. For example, were I also not changing their weapons, I would have him ponder the length of the supply chains involved in mining and refining the metal ores to make the iconic Dothraki arakh. GRRM... never discusses how they make those and also never suggests why Rakharo gets it.

But if we are making fanfic where Rakharo is the smarter more philosophical one, there's a good reason to keep him with the most iconically Dothraki weapon: because we shouldn't imply. ..thinking... is alien to the culture.

We should keep that Rakharo is successful and appealing as a Dothraki.

Quaro liked his sausage so well he decided to have another one, and Rakharo had to outdo him and eat three more, belching loudly.

Keep that he's also casually competitive and (??) one of the lads,

He towered over Aggo and Jhogo now, as her handmaids had both noticed.

and attractive, by Dothraki standards. He’s not disqualified from that by “actually thinking about things”. I want to make him out to be strategic and philosophical in a Dothraki way, as part of their culture and not alien to it.

I really contemplated if I was even going to post this or go with this storyline. It’s just such a touchy subject and such a dark one at that. It’s horrible what people go through in their own homes and I didn’t want to post this originally on fear of upsetting anyone, but at the same time, maybe this can bring light to an evergoing problem and hopefully the resources I attached might spur someone on to think about reaching out for help.

Rooster took some convincing before Jake was able to pry your address from him. He was determined to apologize for upsetting you. He loved you and wanted nothing but to see you happy, especially if he could make you happy. The drive to your house was tense. He kept trying to figure out if he should just turn around and go home. Maybe, he thought, it would be weird for him to just magically pull up to your driveway late in the night to apologize for his behavior at the bar. Watching you walk out so upset made his heart shatter and he wanted to make up for it.

He thought over what he might say about a million times, or maybe you weren’t even awake anymore. He couldn’t dare wake you up this late.

Finally he decided, he check of the lights were on, and if you were even home.

Pulling up to your house, he noticed your car, and a truck that he knew deep down wasn’t yours. Were you staying with a friend? A family member?

He pulled his car up and noticed one light was on, presumably your bedroom. He walked up to the door and knocked. He waited for a couple of minutes with no reply, and he was about to walk away until he heard your voice cry out in what he could only assume was pain. His hand shot to the doorknob, praying to himself it was unlocked.

It was.

Entering your home, he noticed it was awfully dark except for some dim lighting coming from up the stairs. He went to go check on you and follow the source of the noise when he heard doors slam and make voice he didn’t recognize book through the house.

“Stop following me.”

Your voice followed up his demand, and you didn’t sound like yourself. “Please…I’m sorry! I’ll do better! I’ll never go out again! Please come back to bed.” You sounded defeated, tired. He could hear the pain in your voice like you’d been crying.

Before you could finish, a loud smack rang through. Jake’s blood boiled at the sound of your cries.

You had been hit.

He wanted to step in, tell this douche off but he knew it’d only make things worse for you. “Look at what you made me do!! Don’t talk back to me!! There’s no excuses for what you’ve done. I know that one pilot was there, the blonde. He only wants in your pants!! Talking to him and egging him on is cheating on me!! Don’t even get me starting on that bird guy! You cry to me that he’s your best friend and that’s why he texts you all the time. I know what you did with him!! Don’t play dumb with me! You slept with all of them didn’t you?!” He was angry and Jake knew it. But he was so wrong. Jake didn’t want in your pants, he wanted to marry you, love you for the rest of your life!

“No! I’ve told you it’s not like-“ Again, you were cut off. A loud boom this time, and Jake’s guess was that this guy shoved you against the wall.

“Stop talking back.” Jake heard footsteps coming down the stairs and he quickly dicked behind the couch.

“Please don’t leave.”

No response.

You and this guy were in the living room by the door now. He was at the door, hand on the doorknob, with you standing at the bottom of the stairs.

What you said next, broke Jake.

“You’re going to see her aren’t you?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“Yes it is!!! I’m your girlfriend!! Seeing another woman is cheating!!” Jake thought he’d turn around and hit you, but instead this man just walked out the doorway.

Jake listened as the truck started and left, and the only sound left for him to hear was your crying. Jake sat behind that couch for what felt like years before you finally went upstairs.

He stood up when he knew it was clear and thought about heading home.

But before he could decide, he was standing in front of your bedroom door, your sobs sounding from the other side.

He hesitantly knocked and heard you startle. He listened as you approached and when you opened the door, you looked like you’d seen a ghost.

“Seresin!! What the fuck are you doing here?! Get the hell out of my house!!” You went to shut the door but Jake caught it. You jumped at his quick movements and that’s when he realized he’d have to take a different approach.

You backed up, “How do you know where I live? You’re a fucking psychopath!! I will call the police! Get the fuck out!” Your voice was filled with hatred, venom dripping from every word.

“I’m not here to hurt you.” Jake put his hands up where you could see them, his motions slow.

“I don’t care! Get out!!!” You were pushing him now, but you weren’t strong enough to move him from his spot.

“Listen to me, I’m not here to hurt you. I heard what happened with that guy. I want to help you.” You froze at his comment.

“You? How did you-?”

“Please relax. I promise I just want you to be safe.” Jake took a step forward towards you. “Tell me who he is. Who is doing this to you?”

“That’s none of your business! Get out of my house!”

“Y/N, listen to me. I don’t care what I have to do to get you to tell me, but I want to get you out of here. Tell me his name.” Jake’s voice remained calm, as to not startle you or make you think he was going to yell or hurt you.

“That’s none of your-“

“Yeah, you just said that. Y/N, what he’s doing isn’t okay. You can’t keep living like this. Let me take you somewhere else, Phoenix’s? Roosters? Any family out here? You say where and I’ll take you right now.”

You stood there looking at him with disgust. “Get. Out. Now. I will call the police on you.”

“Go ahead.”

Your eyes widened as you picked up your phone, and you froze as you saw something Jake could only assume was a text. “Please, let me help you. You do not deserve this treatment. All I ask is you pack a small bag of what you need, and you tell me where you wanna go.” Jake took another step forward. You looked up at him from your phone with fear written all over your face.

“He’s on his way home. You have to leave!!”

“Come with me.”

“I-I can’t!! Get out of here!! Please!”

“Come with me.”

“He’ll kill you!!”

“Come with me.”

“I-he’ll…” your voice trailed off as you met eyes with Jake. You noticed he was crying. Jake had been crying for awhile. Seeing you like this was something he couldn’t handle.

Jake lowered his hands, and took another step towards you, closing most of the distance. “Please.” He was pleading with you to take his hand and let him help you. You stares at him, watching his every movement, and he took the time to note every injury on you.

Something particular caught his eye though. Just below your shorts, where they’d ridden up, he caught a glimpse of what looked to be wounds of your own doing.

You had been hurting yourself just as much as your boyfriend been hurting you.

Jake looked up at you again and your phone buzzed again. You looked at it quickly before returning your gaze. Jake felt a ounce of hope when you sighed.

“We have 7 minutes.”

Jake helped you pack what you could into a backpack and got you into his truck as fast as he could before he took off.

“Where do you wanna go? I can call anyone you want.”

You both agreed for you to leave your phone behind so you couldn’t be tracked. “Rooster, please.”

Jake nodded and without another word, Roostee was suddenly on the line. “Hey Brad, I know this is weird and odd but I need you to have your house open and unlocked and be outside and ready to go in 5 minutes.”

“Uhh, you do know it’s like midnight right?”

“I don’t care, I have Y/N and she needs somewhere to stay so please do what I say.”

Without any other word from Rooster, he hung up. Jake knew you’d known Rooster for years, and that you felt safe with him, you trusted him. Jake also felt safe about you being in Rooster’s care.

“No, I feel like I need to apologize. You shouldn’t have witnessed that.”

“I’m glad I did.”

“He just gets so mad that I’m around you guys all the time. He thinks I’m cheating with you, he’s seen tou flirt with me. Everytime he finds out I was somewhere you also were, it gets worse. He wasn’t always like this, it started during the Uranium Mission.”

“Y/N…”

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be.”

“No, I feel like I need to-“

“We’re here. There’s Rooster.”

You went to get out of the truck to get to Roostee, but you paused and looked to Jake. “Thank you Seresin.” With that you hopped out and Jake watched as Rooster waved before hastily taking you inside.

Jake had no clue if Rooster knew of your situation or not, but he knew you’d be in good hands.

His drive home was deafening with silence.

He felt like he had a part to play in the shit you went through. He had to stay away from you, for your own safety.

Not for forever, but at least for awhile. He was the reason you were being hurt.

Papilo - A Marbled White Butterfly. He's the local rune keeper and one of the oldest Miinu in the village. No one knows where he came from. Mrs. Coco - A Ladybug. She's the towns clothes seamtress and makes clothes for the village with whatever she can find.

Corrix - A Water Boatman. He is the local fisherman and Aniso's adoptive father. Sabbeth - A Sabethes cyaneus Mosquito. She is a dancer and can tell the future by drinking blood. She likes to squat in human homes to be close to her supply. Greg - A Cockroach. A free spirted soul who often scrounges around human settlements to find free food. Is often with his partner Sabbeth. Zell - A carpet moth caterpillar. A young feral miinu with no family who was found wandering around the Grotto and stealing food.

Hawaiiʻs First National Holiday Next weekend Hawaiian Nationals will be celebrating the 181st anniversary of Lahoihoi Ea, “Sovereignty Restoration Day”. On February 11, 1843 a British naval officer Captain Lord George Paulet arrived in Honolulu to investigate a land dispute complaint filed by Richard Charlton, the British Consul to Hawaii. When negotiations with King Kamehameha III did not go his way, Paulet’s cavalier colonial response was to seize control of the Hawaiian Kingdom and place it under the British Crown. But unbeknownst to Paulet, three envoys from Hawaii — Timoteo Ha’alilio, William Richards and Sir George Simpson — were already in Europe negotiating with the United Kingdom and the Kingdom of France for formal recognition of the Hawaiian Kingdom as a sovereign nation. Upon learning of Paulet’s brazen action in Hawaii, they filed a protest with British authorities. On July 26, 1843 British Admiral Richard Thomas sailed into Honolulu harbor on his flagship HMS Dublin to put an end Captain Paulet’s illegal occupation. Reserving the right to protect British citizens, Adm. Thomas clearly affirmed Great Britain’s respect for the sovereignty of the Hawaiian Kingdom. On July 31, 1843 a ceremony lowering the British flag and raising the flag of Hawaii was held at a site now called Thomas Square in honor of the admiral and the occasion. The ceremony acknowledged Hawai‘i’s sovereign stature and restored King Kamehameha III as the rightful ruler. A phrase from the speech made that day by Kamehameha III at Kawaiah‘o Church, Ua mau ke eā o ka ‘āina i ka pono (The sovereignty of the land is preserved through righteousness), remains the official motto of the Hawaiian Kingdom to this day. Even the usurper State of Hawaii has adopted it as their state motto. Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea For 50 years, from 1843 to 1893, Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, was celebrated as a week long national holiday marked by Hawaiian patriotism and all the best that our islands have to offer including music, crafts, games, food and community events. In 1893, Hawai‘i once again came under illegal occupation (this time by the United States) and Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea, was banned in Hawai‘i, along with other national holidays such as Hawaii Independence Day, Lā Ku‘oko’a. Unlike the illegal occupation of 1843, the one that began in 1893 continues until today. However, Lā Ho‘iho‘i Ea experienced a rebirth in 1985 when Hawaiian national scholar, patriot and activist Dr. Kekuni Blaisdell resurrected this holiday to honor and celebrate our continued independence and sovereignty, despite the nearly century-long American occupation. This Hawaiian Kingdom holiday is now celebrated by a huge gathering at Thomas Square in Honolulu, and by numerous gatherings and activities throughout the islands. Happily, this year, even the US-installed puppet government, the “State of Hawaii”, is recognizing Lā Ho‘iho‘i Eā and Lā Ku‘oko’a, as two of the Hawaiian Kingdomʻs most important national holidays. So Winifred is stuck between rolling her eyes and secretly screaming on the inside with this secret relationship Bucky has with you. He’s always been a sweet heart but his sweetness has increased by a 100 now, the boy is love struck.

She’d always figured her son had a crush on the pretty new neighbour but she brushed it off as puppy love. When she sent him over to help you, she noted the way he cheeks flushed like never before and it made her raise her brow a little, maybe there was something else there.

He wants nothing but the best for you, so he’s always trailing behind his mom and sisters, asking questions while trying to pretend it has nothing to do with him.

“Ma, Steve’s taking Peggy out, he was wondering if it’d be okay to get her flowers, is that too old fashioned?”

“Steve asked you this, why didn’t he just ask Sarah” Bucky’s mom gave him a pointed look while Bucky shrugged innocently, waiting for an answer.  “He should do what feels right, if he wants to get her flowers, then he should get her flowers” She nearly says your favourite flowers are peonies but she decides against it, wanting to see what Bucky will do with this newfound advice. She knows you perfectly, so she drops hints every so often in passing.

“I just got back from y/n’s, did you know theres a new café down the street”

Bucky’s ears perk up, listening to his mom talk about her day with you. He was always an attentive listener, but now? Fully focused.

“There’s a new café?” Bucky asks innocently, while his mom smirks, nodding.

He takes you to the café. He takes you on walks. He knows what to get you during that time of the month. He knows your favourite chocolates. Your favourite comfort foods. He knows which movies make you cry (and hes a lil shit, happily agreeing to watch them with you so he can cuddle you close, kissing you the entire time while you sniffle into his chest)

Of course she raised him right; he always treats you like a gentleman. You are his princess, he knows you sometimes worry that he’ll get tired to dating you and want to explore other options. You never say it but he can feel it and he’s always there to remind you there’s no one else he’d rather be with.

Winifred has noticed her prized garden has started becoming a little scanty, a few flowers missing here and there. Leave it to her baby boy to secretly make you little handpicked bouquets whilst claiming it was the squirrels responsible for the plucked flowers. It warms her heart to see that he knows how to treat you well.

Bucky’s antics have been going on for months; there’s a betting pool going on between the Barnes and Rogers household, wondering when Bucky just admit to dating you.

He’s tip toeing around the kitchen again, peeking over her shoulder to see what she’s cooking.

Pacific Way and the Future One of the regular features on our program, Free Hawaiʻi News on ʻŌlelo TV is a discussion between Kumu Hina Wong and me, called “the Pacific Way”. It’s about looking at topics of concern from a Pacific islander perspective and it’s influence on how we do things and how we live. In contrast is the “Western Way” which has come to dominate the economic, political and social systems around the world. Some call it the legacy of colonialism. A recent United Nations resolution calls it, the negative legacy of colonialism. But now, the colonial system is beginning to implode. Careless, reckless and relentless commercial pursuits of the Western Way has brought the world to the brink of a catastrophic collapse. This is where the Pacific Way comes in. There is a rising awareness that the profound value of ancient knowledge and traditional practices could provide the answers to the grave issues facing the world today. What if we were to apply the “Pacific Way”, or more specifically, “the Hawaiʻi Way”, to issues such as caring for the people (mālama i ka poʻe); for our land (mālama I ka ʻāina), and caring for our ocean (mālama i ke kai); and caring for the planet (mālama honua). It prioritizes food resources, housing, sustainability, relationships, caring for our earth, sky and sea.  Pacific islanders have a way of relating to our surroundings that has sustained, nurtured and helped us to thrive on tiny specs of land scattered over a vast ocean covering a third of the globe. For many years the people of Hawaiʻi have been suffering from a severe housing crisis. In the previous Ke Aupuni News we spoke of the diaspora of Hawaiians having to live not only in the U.S., but all over the globe. In a conversation I had with the Kiribati ambassador to the UN a few years ago, he said, what if our goal as leaders is not to just provide a way for people to afford to live, but to provide the conditions to make people happy, and at peace with one another? To thrive and to see life pursuits not as a series of win/lose encounters or even win/win events, but as, happy/happy opportunities. Think about it. By engaging with a “win-lose” or even a “win-win” mindset, the parties operate in a competitive and even adversarial mode. But in working for a happy-happy outcome, the parties operate in a collaborative mode of considering and caring for the welfare of the other party as well as their own. The platform becomes, sharing with aloha. Happily, the conversation in our islands is beginning to shift toward the Pacific/Hawaiʻi Way of thinking… encouraging & supporting local residents to step forward into roles of responsibility of any size, small, medium or large, to let the U.S. occupiers of Hawai`i, especially the real estate developers and government agencies, know that, going forward, decisions must be made from the ground up, and local residents in their local areas must be the ones to decide their own futures.
