Some concept art for characters in Smallscale. Particularly those from the small miinu village known as The Grotto. I'll explain what bugs everyone are below.
Dr. Leif - A Giant Leaf Insect. He is the local physician in the village and uses his ability to commune with plants to make powerful medicinal herbs.
Queen Pono - The Queen of the Carpenter Ant Colony. Her workers are smaller than her and work hard to keep the village save and upkepts.
Papilo - A Marbled White Butterfly. He's the local rune keeper and one of the oldest Miinu in the village. No one knows where he came from. Mrs. Coco - A Ladybug. She's the towns clothes seamtress and makes clothes for the village with whatever she can find.
Corrix - A Water Boatman. He is the local fisherman and Aniso's adoptive father. Sabbeth - A Sabethes cyaneus Mosquito. She is a dancer and can tell the future by drinking blood. She likes to squat in human homes to be close to her supply. Greg - A Cockroach. A free spirted soul who often scrounges around human settlements to find free food. Is often with his partner Sabbeth. Zell - A carpet moth caterpillar. A young feral miinu with no family who was found wandering around the Grotto and stealing food.

Challenge Day 101 Year 6 Corrix hadn’t spent much time around other species. It was looking froward to the experience but was concerned that it would do or say the wrong thing. There were so many different types of peoples where it was going and it wasn’t the best at reading his own peoples no verbal queues let alone other species. What I used: Muji Light Blue 0.275mm nib pen on Moleskin Sketchbook. What this is: Daily Character Design Challenge, 2020-09-03 Year 6 - No101, by Jeff Stewart

The low hum of the engines reverberated through the ship in the eternal night of space. On board, the lights were dimmed for the sleep cycle.
Silently, a matte black ship slid up alongside the Dawn's Triumph and overrode the airlock controls silently. The enemy ship flipped upside down and several black-clad figures stole out, through the linked airlocks, and into the old freighter.
They crept through the silent hallways, four humans covered from head to toe, masked against the cameras. Fortunately for them, their ship had the capability to override and calm all of the Dawn's Triumph's alarms.
They had one goal: find and eliminate Micah and Aesila Cyraxis. Destroy the princess if necessary, and the rogue Shadowside agent.
It was easy enough to find them. One assassin split off from the group to track down Cendrick. The other three stayed together to find the royals, methodically searching the ship for them. It took twenty minutes to find Micah and Aesila asleep in a small bed in a quarters of their own. The princess was asleep in a smaller bed across the room. She was not even a year old.
The first figure stepped ever so softly around to the head of the bed and raised a laser dagger, thin beam of red light glittering in the dark. The second figure flicked out another one and waited.
The first figure raised their dagger, paused, and stabbed downwards.
The dagger skidded, sparking, off of the invisible shield. At the same time, Micah's eyes snapped open and he rolled out of his bed and onto the floor.
The first assassin leaped back to avoid being knocked over. A mistake; it gave Micah the opportunity to slip sideways and grab hold of his sword, leaning against the wall. It was sheathed at the moment; he ripped it out of the scabbard with a bright ringing noise and brought it up to parry any attacks.
The first attacker drove forwards, swiping at Micah with their laser knife. He dodged backwards, amulet glinting in the low light as it hung around his neck. As the assassin pulled back to swipe again, he struck forwards and almost caught the assassin across the chest.
Awake now, Aesila joined the battle. The second assassin had leaped for her, but she'd caught their hands and was struggling to keep the laser knife away from her throat. With a vicious twist, she forced a strange cracking noise from the assassin's wrist. They cried out and dropped their dagger, expression changing from concentration to fear. Aesila snatched the dagger up and stabbed at her attacker.
The first assassin glanced over, distracted by their companion's shout. In that moment, Micah struck forwards again with two quick swipes, slashing a deep cut into the assassin's gut, then a second across their chest. They cried out and stumbled backwards. Micah stepped forwards again.
"Stop where you stand," the third assassin said. His laser knife hovered millimeters above Sofeir's exposed throat.
Micah froze. Aesila, kneeling on the bed with the dagger she had claimed buried up to the hilt in her assailant's chest, narrowed her eyes. Her gaze flicked back and forth between Micah and Sofeir.
Standoff.
Micah glanced down at the assassin he'd downed, clutching her midsection on the ground. Blood dripped off his sword.
Somewhere in the ship a faint alarm was going off, a low but insistent blaring. Micah did not move his sword.
"You came here to kill us," Aesila growled, not moving the dagger. The assassin on the bed gasped for breath and coughed faintly, eyes wide and frightened. "Why would you hesitate now?"
The third assassin paused. His eyes flicked down to Sofeir and up again.
It was because she was a child. "You failure," Aesila sneered, slowly twisting the knife in the second assassin's chest. They gurgled horribly. "You cannot bring yourself to kill a child. You would be a disgrace to the noble houses of Corrix."
Micah did not move or look over at her. There was a reason she was deliberately antagonizing this man, he was sure of it.
"Disgusting." Aesila pulled down just a tad on the laser knife. The wound did not bleed; the heat of the laser knife cauterized the laceration, bubbling flesh like melted plastic around the edges. "Pathetic. Too soft to complete your task because your target is so young and innocent."
The man's expression hardened, and his grip on the dagger tightened. Everyone was watching Aesila.
At that moment, Cendrick swirled out of the shadows of the doorway and, in one swift movements, took aim and fired. The miniscule pistol he was holding fired with a faint "psshh" of ionizing air. The slug of metal went directly through the third assassin's head; he went limp and dropped the laser knife. It landed on Sofeir's neck and bounced away onto the pillow; she awoke immediately and began to cry from the pain.
Micah stabbed forwards and killed the assassin in front of him, ripping her throat open with his blade. Aesila ripped the knife out of the assassin in front of her and flipped it, then palm-struck them as hard as she could in temple several times. They collapsed.
Micah dropped his sword on the ground and rushed to Sofeir's bed. He carefully lifted her small form and cleared her wispy hair away from her neck. The laser knife had sheared away some of the skin, leaving an ugly red burn mark along her neck. Otherwise, she was unharmed.
Cendrick lowered his gun, letting out a breath. "That was too close," he said, swiping one hand across his forehead. It was completely soaked in blood and he left a streak of red across his dark skin.
Micah nodded. Aesila cupped her daughter's face and let out a breath, closing her eyes in relief.
"Too close indeed," she said. "We are lucky we were prepared for similar situations to this. We are lucky we... Cendrick, what happened to you?"
"One of them came for me." He glanced down at the robes he was wearing; they were half-sodden with blood. "He no longer exists."
Micah kissed his daughter on her forehead, carefully patting her in her back. Slowly her crying calmed until she was falling asleep again.
"We are lucky that this time we stopped the attempt," Micah said. He looked over to Cendrick. "We must find out who sent them."
Cendrick nodded sharply. "I can mine the ship's databases for information," he said. He set his jaw.
"This will not happen again."
The royal family employs no bodyguards. A would-be assassin discovers why.
