31 October 2024 - happy spooky day to all those who celebrate ! 💛🌟
My grades are getting better :) I now have 2 100% classes, which is pretty awesome! My Spanish grades are suffering (I have a C) but I will get them up to speed soon because I’m cool like that.
Still reading Frankenstein. Best book ever, I think. I’ve just hit the section where Frankenstein is telling his own story, and it’s taking me forever to get past because I’m going, “AHH AMAZING,” like, every paragraph. I think that between the hot pink and brat green bookmarks, the rainbow tabs, and the incredibly unserious annotations… my copy just might send Victor into a coma.

🌟📚🌟 : Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein

Welcome to the Soneva Jani!
“Soneva Jani is nestled within the tranquil waters of the Noonu Atoll, where sun-drenched blue skies and azure seas stretch out in every direction. One of the world’s lowest density resorts, there are just 51 over-water and three island residences, the largest and most luxurious villas in the Maldives, each designed for the ultimate privacy, space and breathtaking ocean views. Relax in iconic Water or Island Villas for the ultimate indulgence.”
UNDER THE CUT, YOU’LL FIND THE LIST OF ROOMMATES!
Unless we got a message from you telling us you wanted to be with a specific person or were not in the ships list - you were included in the generator. If you do not see your FCs name on this list, please message us POLITELY and let us know - sometimes a name gets missed getting put into the generator. We’re human and it happens! At the same time, if your FC is on there twice by any chance then please let us know. Again, mistakes happen. As we accept new applications and people come into the group before AND during the event, this list will be updated. Same will go for if people get unfollowed or ask to leave the group. We posted the pairings in advance so that you may reach out to your roommate and get new interactions going! Even if a mun is on hiatus, be sure to reach out to them so that you can see if you can head-canon some interactions or plan for something when they are off hiatus. All trips are to encourage new interactions and unlikely connections!

August reads, a shockingly good reading month!
The bad: None!
The fine: None!
The good/great: Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth - a quiet little novel about the possessive love between two teenage friends who start a secret relationship. Uncomfortable and visceral and really interesting, I'm looking forward to what Howarth writes next
Vita Nova by Louise Gluck - I am struggling to find the words why I liked this one, but I did. Sorry I don't have any more for you.
The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On by Franny Choi - a bunch of books I read this month accidentally had themes of displacement and language and this definitely fell into that category. Dark but weirdly comforting.
All Down Darkness Wide by Sean Hewitt - a memoir that talks about poetry, queer identity, religion, mental health, and the author's 5 year relationship. Beautiful but I DID find it extremely triggering and had to take a 2 week long break.
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty - whimsical and fun. I listened to this on audiobook while I took my dog for walks and I would frequently extend them a little longer so I could keep listening.
My Name Will Grow Wide Like a Tree by Yi Lei - would just casually drop the most crushing lines in the middle of a long-ass poem. Mostly poems about identity as an unmarried woman. I read an interesting interview with Tracy K Smith about the translation process and the challenges of translating her poetry because there are references that are so specific culturally that wouldn't translate easily to Western audiences.
Postcolonial Love Poem by Natalie Diaz - book #2 that had heavy themes of language and displacement! I thought some of her strongest poems in here tied the landscape with indigenous languages and practices.
The Wild Iris by Louise Gluck - ties religious imagery with nature which means it was Extremely My Shit. Highlighted so much in here.
The World and All That It Holds by Aleksandar Hemon - I am not kidding you when I say I wept through the last 70 pages of this book. I was googling so many things because Hemon just kind of throws you in and says "figure it out" re: language - he does this interesting thing where he leaves certain phrases or words untranslated in the text, and they're all different (mostly Spanjol/Ladino, Bosnian, German, and French but there are others too). Very much a refugee story and honestly if I really laid out all the interesting or moving components of this book I'd need to write an essay.
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan - technically a re-read in preparation for the sequel that came out last week. Holy shit I forgot how much I loved this book - so many cool things about fate and duty and GENDER and identity. Please disregard the publisher blurb that markets it as "Mulan meets The Song of Achilles", it's not at all accurate. Very much a political intrigue book!
Currently reading He Who Drowned the World by Shelley Parker-Chan and liking it, though the reflections on gender feel a lot more heavy-handed and repetitive in this one so I'm not enjoying it as much as I'd hoped
