A LOOK AT "THE MASTER IN THE REDWOODS" -- A GERMAN-AMERICAN MASTER POTTER AND HER WORKS.
PIC(S) INFO: Spotlight on Marguerite Wildenhain (born Marguerite Friedlaender), (October 11, 1896 – February 24, 1985), an American Bauhaus-trained ceramic artist, educator and author, photographed at Pond Farm, Sonoma County, CA, c. early 1950s. Plus assorted pottery works by the late, great Marguerite herself.
OVERVIEW: "Another potter whose career exemplifies the international nature of studio pottery is Marguerite Wildenhain (1896 – 1985). She was born in France, to a British mother and a German Jewish father. At age 18, she started work in a porcelain factory, and fell in love with the wheel. One day in 1919, while riding her bike in the countryside, Marguerite happened upon a poster announcing a new school, to be called the Bauhaus. It would be "a new guild of craftsmen without the class distinctions which raise an arrogant barrier between craftsmen and artists." At the Bauhaus, Wildenhain worked with some of the greatest designers of the early 20th century; in 1925, she became the first woman honored as a German Master Potter. She went on to teach at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design, while also designing commercial ceramics. When the Nazis came into power, Wildenhain and her husband fled to the Netherlands, where they opened a pottery they called shop called Het Kruikje (“The Little Jug”). In 1940 she had to flee the Nazis yet again, this time to emigrating to the United States
PART II: Wildenhain briefly took a position at the California College of Arts and Crafts, then in 1942, relocated to the new Pond Farm artist’s colony in rural Sonoma County. High on a hill above the Russian River, she planted a garden, built a house, and repurposed an old barn into her pottery studio. Over the next 40 years, Wildenhain would create an extraordinary body of work here, while also teaching students from around the world. Her students learned to throw on the physically-demanding kick-wheel, and started by making a dog dish! In between sessions, they discussed philosophy, natural history, and how to run a business; many went on to become important potters in their own right. Now part of the Austin Creek State Recreation Area, Wildenhain’s studio has been designated a "National Treasure" by the National Trust for Historic Preservation."

JoJos playing minecraft headcanons (I hope you enjoy it!!)
Jonathan- tried playing with a keyboard but his fingers are too big so he uses a controller. Refuses to kill the iron golems in villages and loves trading with villagers, even though he wishes they had dialogue. Killed a pig because he was on the verge of starvation and then decided to stock up on bread and potatoes right after because he felt so bad. Cannot figure out redstone for the life of him; can only work a lever and button. He prefers sleeping through the night because he doesn't want to deal with the zombies but can somehow deal with the skeletons and creepers. Jonathan likes to play on easy mode to explore and find pottery sherds to make at least a few pots to decorate his house. Has yet to get into the nether or enter the end. Has not started a raid and does not plan on ever doing so.
Joseph- plays with the keyboard and has almost broken it multiple times due to how hard he accidentally presses on the keys. Can only do simple redstone and even then, he somehow messes it up to the point it works out in the end (he doesn’t know how he did it but pretends he knew what he was doing like always) Likes trading with the villagers and has made a mini villager trading hall so he doesn’t have to run to catch any villagers or worry about them dying in a raid. Yes, he had died a few times because he was not prepared for them. Would like to try mods but he can’t figure out how to install them properly. Once he went into a server and figured out how to get a multiple diamond glitch but got banned once the other players found out how he had so many diamonds without ever being in a cave. He’s still mad about it. Once died in a wooden mansion and got so mad he didn’t place down a bed in it to save his progress, he quit and almost deleted the game.
Jotaro- didn’t care about the game and only knew the basics until he heard about the aquatic update. Looked up everything that would be included in the update and tried to play it on the keyboard so he could figure out how the game works. Prefers the controller over the keyboard. Knows how to do some redstone but barely makes anything using it. He had accidentally made a fishing pole while crafting; immediately went to find the nearest ocean or river to use it. Gets disappointed when the fish he pulls out are dead and looks up how to keep them alive. Uses the last few iron ingots he had to make a bucket and capture a fish. Makes a temporary pond until he makes a huge aquarium that connects to the ocean so the fish are all free to swim along with the other sea creatures. Has named at least one of each sea creature with the name tags. Once played for almost 6 hours straight due to being super focused on building something and didn’t realize it until he looked over at the clock.
Josuke- uses the controller instead of the keyboard. Only plays on multiplayer or different servers but has a few testing worlds so he won’t mess up as much (like his father, he does mess up quite a lot, even after perfecting whatever he’s working on in his testing worlds, but it always works out in the end) he loathes the skeletons to the point where he was searching for a mod on reddit and other sites at 2am to get rid of the skeletons in the game. Knows alot about redstone and has many redstone builds in his testing worlds. Has killed almost every turtle he sees in the game by pure accident and feels guilty everytime, even with his fear of them. He is the player to go afk and have dinner while he leaves one of his farms to fill up his chests. He almost died to a skeleton doing this but managed to save himself; that was the night he went hunting for a mod to get rid of the skeletons. Has named his pet cat and dog after his best friends; has also named every spider after another person (I’m sure we all know who we’re talking about) He has a custom skin and surprisingly, people like his skin. Starts raids so he can get totems, but has not realized he can turn it into a farm to make it easier; no one has told him yet.
Giorno- likes using a controller but can play on the keyboard as well. Made a huge animal farm for every animal he could get. Loves using the bonemeal to gather more flowers and make it look nice around his house. Can do some complex redstone but likes keeping it simple. He owns a server and had banned a player for using a multi diamond glitch; he probably would have allowed them to keep using it in private as long as he got a few out of it, but he and a few others had caught him using it when they went to surprise him with a bunch of food when they heard they didn’t have much food. Died a few times because he forgets he’s not in creative mode. Makes a ton of cookies and shares them with everyone once a week because he always makes too much. Has no weapon preference. Can never find a village without someone’s help.
Jolyne- started playing once she found out about the nether and the end. Prefers the end because it’s easy for her to kill the ender dragon. Loves getting gold for her golden apples since she has amazing luck when it comes to finding resources. Once made a nether portal before getting iron armor and hasn’t been able to do it since. Really good at using the bow. Loves playing multiplayer with her friends and being stupid late at night until early morning. Watches playthroughs of the game during dinner at home (she’s so me haha) and uses any tips from said playthrough into her own worlds. The one to go to if it involves the ocean monuments; she has a strategy that she uses almost every time she needs to enter one. Really good at complex redstone and uses it for her hidden base in a server she has with her friends. Loves making the cookies and cakes since she always liked how they look; sometimes has to go grab a snack to feel immersed within the game.

After seeing @ivys-garden posting about ponds and lakes yesterday I wanted to pitch in with something I would like to see in minecraft.
This won't be as thought through or elaborate I'm afraid but I would like to add...
✨️☕️coffee☕️✨️
Ideas for coffee in minecraft:
Collecting coffee beans and/or farming them.
Brewing coffee on a special barrista crafting table.
Mining ice from colder biomes to get ice cubes for the queers.
Milk and sugar for those who like it.
Making cute little pottery or porcelain mugs from clay.
Getting a speed boost from drinking a cuppa! 🏃💨
Ooh, I guess I would also like some chairs and tables I could actually sit at to drink them.
What items and/or consumeables would you like added to minecraft?

Duong successfully weaved a 30 meter long cloth, Prepare to sew your own...
Just to make it clear, this gentleman, Duong, made the entire loom by himself.  He made his spinning wheel entirely by himself.  He grew the cotton and spun it entirely by himself...and he made the metal tools entirely by himself.
Now, when I say he made the metal tools, he dug the ore, he made the smelter, he made the forge, he smelted the bloom (the de-slagged ore), he literally hammered the blades and cut and shaped the wooden handles, and even made metal nails.   Admittedly later on he did start buying metal stock & premade nails, and most of those were salvaged metals...but every tool, excepting the electricity stuff, he at least made a version of it by hand...and you can see in the hoe and the shovel and the chisel and the machete that it’s all hand-forged.
Even all the concrete is from limestone that he dug from the cliff across the river & kilned into quicklime, most of the pottery he uses is homemade and home-kilned, and the sand is literally sifted from the riverbed down below.
(His wife. Huang Hoang, will use a chainsaw and pre-made tools & equpiment, but not only is she less muscular than him, she has a different focus for her channel--farming & selling in the marketplace, along with creating herself a livable off-grid home--than what Duong has developed for his, aka creating a farm using primitive skills, aka everything from scratch that he can safely manage.)
By the way, with the exception of the generator, wires, and lighting for his home, and until he finishes this cloth, the clothes on his back...he’s pretty much made all the buildings & planted all the trees and food plants, dug & built the giant fish pond, and stocked it with wild-caught and carefully bred fish, and eveb caught & tamed wild chickens. (The pigs were bought locally, but come from wild boar stock.)  He even has a water-powered grain mill-hammer, and he had a water wheel for powering the bellows for his forge (though at the moment the waterwheel is broken and in need of major repairs).
Oh, and for those who don’t know, chickens are still living in the wilds of Southeast Asia where they originated, so yes, you can catch & tame genuinely wild chickens in Vietnam!

Talula Hill Farm Resort New Year Getaway
To celebrate the start of a new year of adventures for my family in 2024, we embark on a road trip to Talula Hill Farm Resort situated in Kluang, Johor Bahru.
The resort is built with the vision of striking a balance between hospitality and farming, supporting and embracing a simple holistic life: "a place where people of all ages come to work with the soil and the land", "dedicate time to share, learn and practice natural farming to return to the principles of nature where fruits & vegetables are enabled to flourish in a self-maintained environment".

Tumblr media
The resort has a restaurant and cafe that practices farm-to-table, using fresh produce from the farm to create a wide variety of beverages and dishes. I would recommend visiting the restaurant and sitting outdoors to enjoy a panoramic view of the entire estate. Some of the dishes that I sampled during my stay includes Banoffee Waffles, Mushroom Spaghetti Aglio Olio, and Cajun Chicken.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The rooms are decorated in a rustic style with minimalistic furnishings and amenities that are adequate for short getaways. There are a couple of room styles to choose from, ranging from two bedders to lofts for large families. For those travelling with babies, you can request for a baby crib for the little ones to get their own private space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The farmstead provides several activities for its guests to get up close and personal with Mother Nature, which includes animal feeding, pond fishing, swimming in the Grotto, farming, and pottery. For those that prefer to sit back and relax, there is a well equipped lounge room for guests to play all kinds of board and card games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, my family enjoyed our short getaway at Talula Hill Farm Resort. We will always remember the warm hospitality that we received during our stay, and the precious time that we spent together to herald a new year filled with exciting adventures!

Holašovice / Trebon / Slavonice
Sorry this post is a day late, but the day got away from me yesterday and I was too tired to write, but I also wanted to give updates on our adventures yesterday and today.
Yesterday we said farewell to the picturesque Cesky Krumlov & made our way to the small village of Holašovice, which has been deemed a UNESCO heritage site due to its unique architecture of connected large homes. We also got to visit a small pottery studio in the village with a lovely cat guarding all the creations.
We then made our way to the city of Trebon, known for its ponds & famous for its carp. We had lunch in a small resturant that was once the jail cell for Edward Kelly (the alchemist con man who fooled the nobility for many years before his con was discovered and then he died from a broken leg infection trying to escape prison). The carp was actually quite delicious, and we also got to try burčák, which is Czech for “early wine”, as it is the beginning fermentation of the grapes harvested in the autumn months, before it is bottled and turned into white wine. It tasted a bit like the mix between apple cider & a Riesling, and was very delicious. We did a quick walk through the Trebon castle grounds and got to see the “goat moat”; the moat area that is now inhabited by goats but has also been inhabited by bears and other creatures. This seems to be a theme in Czechia; filling moats with animals versus water.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then made our way to Slavonice, past some large fields of sunflowers. In Slavonice, we once again saw examples of the Scrafito style of designs on the buildings, this building more elaborate due to being owned by a Italian family. Inside this building we got to see something may others do not get to see; the Apocalypse House. The inside of the upper floor of the building used to be a religious gathering room for Protestants during the Catholic rule, and the walls contain frescos from 1568 depicting stories from the Book of Revelation. It is a hidden gem of the area that not many people even know exist, and we got to see the frescos up close and observe some of the unique depictions of the time of both the Devil, the angels and archangels, and the City of Babylon. It was utterly fascinating.
Tumblr media
Dinner was a delicious meal of roasted lamb with wheat grouts with bear garlic. The old mill next door had a small “zoo” of sorts for the area, with emus, some pigs, donkeys & geese. We also got to have a glass of local wine which though a bit dry for my taste, but still delicious.
Today, we got to experience something truly magical when we spent the morning & part of the afternoon at a goat farm, owned by the lovely Hanna & her friend Susanna. As someone who loved going to the horse farm as a child & also a lover of the farm atmosphere in general, this was truly awesome for me. The farm also has three working herding dogs who were got to see in action with herding the goats in and out of the barn. Myself I was able to help shovel the hay to feed the goats and then even got a chance to milk a goat (another thing crossed off my life list!). We learned about how Hanna’s family lost and then regained the farm, and also the work that has gone into making the farm a fully working and profitable farm. We also got a tour of a saw mill on the property that has been able to be restored due to a grant from the Henry Ford Foundation. I was able to get video of the mill in action; it was so cool to see it working because some of my favorite historical fictional novels describe the workings of such a mill but it is even cooler to see in person. We then split into groups for anyone to help make the lunch for the day, so I got to help building the fire to roast the sausages and brie, while Mom & Pat helped in the kitchen with the salad making. Johanka taught me about the special way Czechs prepare their sausages for roasting, making slits at the ends to when the ends are cooking they curl up like octopus legs. I personally thought that is super fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I got the chance to speak with Susanna off and on during the trip as I found out that outside of helping out on the farm, she works as an elementary school teacher. She and I talked about some of the difficulties of working with the younger generation and also some of the issues we run into working alongside parents who either are unengaged or don’t want to make changes for the sake of their children. It was interesting to see how even a world apart, those of us who work to try and help the younger generation are sharing the same problems. It was also nice to talk to someone who understands how tough yet rewarding this job can be.
After the wonderful day at the goat farm, Mom & I and our new friend Steve headed back to the hotel while the others went on to tour a local bunker from the 1960s era, as the three of us were all in a need of short snooze/siesta. A nice siesta later and we all met downstairs to tour the wine cellar in the bottom of the hotel. The hotel has a cave that is thought to be created back in the 1200s as a place to store wine and food, due to its cold & dark climate, and now houses the hotel’s collection of 3,000 different bottles of wine. We got to try some delicious white wines including a Riesling from 1997 that was beyond delightful. When then all made our way up to the hotel restaurant, where we were treated to another couple of glasses of delicious wine from the hotel collection, as well as being serenaded by the Slavonice Band. These two gentlemen entertained us not just with tradition Czech & Hungarian songs, but even some blues & folk, including a rousing sing-along of “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” If you told me a year ago I would be singing that song with a Czech folk rock band in a wine restaurant in a small village in Southern Bohemia, Czechia, I would look at you like you were absolutely bonkers. But I can now add that to my list of incredible stories to share from this trip.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tomorrow we officially depart from Czech Republic & we make our way to Bratislava, Slovakia 🇸🇰
Until then my dear readers, I bid you all farewell.

Ranchu Goldfish: A Brief History
Ranchu Goldfish, also called Buffalo-head Goldfish, are a type of fancy goldfish that came from China during the Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD). Ranchu Goldfish was first written about in 1596, during the Ming Dynasty.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the Japanese bred Ranchu Goldfish to make them different in color and shape. By the end of the 19th century, Ranchu Goldfish were popular in Japan and were being shipped to other places.
During World War II, many farms and ponds were destroyed, which made it hard for Ranchu Goldfish to be raised. But after the war, people became interested in the fish again, and efforts were made to improve its unique features, like its curved back, round head, and short fins.
Ranchu Goldfish are popular with hobbyists today, and you can find them in ponds and aquariums all over the world. To do well, they need to be in the right environment, eat the right food, and have their water changed regularly.
Tumblr media
Ranchu are Japanese goldfish.
Ranchu goldfish are popular water pets in Japan. They have round bodies and their heads grow in a unique way. It may have come from China, and it was brought to Japan during the Edo period.
Ranchu goldfish are often kept as ornamental fish in ponds or aquariums outside or inside in Japan. They are used in traditional Japanese painting, pottery, and sculpture, among other things. Every year, there are also Ranchu goldfish competitions in different parts of Japan, where breeders show off their best fish and compete for prizes.
Ranchu goldfish are a symbol of good luck and wealth in Japan, and they are often given as gifts at weddings and business openings. They are also linked to Zen Buddhism because of their calm nature, which shows perseverance, patience, and peace.
About Ranchu Goldfish
Ranchu Goldfish are a popular type of fancy goldfish that came from China and Japan. It has a round body, a big head (called a "hood"), and no fin on its back. Most Ranchu goldfish are red, white, or black, but there are also other colors and patterns.
To do well, they need a large aquarium with good filtration and a varied diet. Ranchu goldfish are calm, social animals that can live up to 20 years if they are cared for properly.
Ranchu Goldfish Have These Physical Traits
Appearance
The Ranchu Goldfish is a popular type of goldfish with a lot of interesting traits. Most tropical fish are not like them. Even though they were probably made from wild carp, they don't look anything like fish that live in the wild.
Let's start with the profile. The Ranchu goldfish looks like an egg because its body is round. At the top of the body, there is a clear curve. This curve stands out because these fish live in fresh water and don't have a dorsal fin.
Also different is the tail fin. The fish looks like it has a "hunchback" because the base of its tail curls in. Ranchu goldfish have a large tail that looks like a beautiful burst of feathers because it has two fan-shaped parts.
A helmet is a fleshy growth on the head. It looks like the wen that some fish have, like lionhead goldfish. But the helmet covers more of the fish, like a hat over the head, gills, and cheek. This plant looks like a raspberry and feels like one, too.
Ranchu goldfish come in many different colors. You can find a piece that sparkles with the well-known gold color. There are also some that are white, black, or have a calico pattern.
How they act and how they feel
This kind of fancy goldfish is calm, easygoing, and pretty fun to watch.
They don't swim fast, which has already been said. They can't move quickly back and forth across the tank because of how they are made. But they get by and look around like any other fish would.
They swim differently than most other fish. They move their tails back and forth, making the moving tissue look like it's dancing.
During the day, your fish are probably going to look at any decorations you have. Aside from trying to pull plants out of the ground and eat the leaves, they are pretty calm.
Tank Mates
Ranchu goldfish get along well with other fish in the same tank, but you should know how the other fish might affect their health. Fish that are aggressive will go after them even though they aren't aggressive themselves.
Bigger fish that are mean, like Cichlids and Oscar Fish, should be avoided. Even smaller fin-nippers aren't a threat because they love to take advantage of the Ranchu's long, flowing tailfin.
Ranchu goldfish get along best with other cold-water fish that are also calm and quiet. Here are a few good options:
Guppies. Dojo Loaches. Zebra Danios. Platies. Mosquitofish. The Lionhead Goldfish. Goldfish with bubble eyes. Goldfish with pearl scales. Moor Black Goldfish. High Fin Banded Sharks from China.
Lifespan of a Ranchu Goldfish
A Ranchu goldfish lives between 8 and 15 years on average.
You can't be sure how long a Ranchu will live, just like you can't be sure how long any other fish will live. There are a lot of things to think about, and how you take care of them makes a big difference. These freshwater fish don't have many different genes, which makes them vulnerable to a wide range of problems.
If they don't have a balanced diet or live in a tank that isn't well taken care of, they might not even reach the low end of this range.
Ranchu Goldfish Average Size
There are many different sizes of this fish. Most Ranchu goldfish will be between five and eight inches long when they are fully grown.
How many kinds of Ranchu goldfish are there?
There are different kinds of Ranchu goldfish that can be told apart by their color, size, and other physical traits. The red and white Ranchu, the all-white Ranchu, the calico Ranchu, and the black Ranchu are all common types.
But the exact number of different kinds of Ranchu goldfish may depend on the system used to divide them.
How to Care for Ranchu Goldfish?
To take care of Ranchu Goldfish, give them a large aquarium or pond, keep the water clean with the right filtration and weekly water changes, feed them a balanced diet of high-quality pellets and vegetables, check on their health often, and don't overfeed or crowd them.
It's also important to keep the water temperature stable and give the aquarium or pond enough oxygen and places to hide.
Ranchu Goldfish Live In
The Ranchu Goldfish is a popular fish that is kept as a pet because of its unique look. It is a freshwater fish that likes to live in a controlled environment with water that is always the same temperature and quality. It lives in slow-moving streams and ponds in Asia, especially Japan, where it was first discovered.
Ranchu Goldfish are usually kept in aquariums or outdoor ponds with filtration systems and water conditioners that are right for them. They need enough room to swim and grow, as well as places to hide so they can rest and feel safe.
Also, to stay healthy and keep their colors bright, they need a varied diet that includes both plant and animal matter.
Overall, giving Ranchu Goldfish a good home means paying close attention to the water quality and food, as well as giving them enough space and enriching their environment.
Conditions and Setup of Tank
The size of the tank, the filtration system, the lighting, the temperature, the chemistry of the water, and any decorations or substrates that may be in the tank are all part of the tank conditions and setup.
The health and well-being of aquatic life depends on how the tank is set up and how it is set up. This can affect their growth, behavior, and overall survival. It is important to learn about the needs of the species being kept and set up the tank and conditions to meet those needs.
Ranchu Goldfish: Keeping the Water Clean
Ranchu goldfish need to keep their water clean in a few key ways. First, make sure the fish are in a tank that is big enough and has a filtration system that meets their needs.
Second, change the water in the tank often to get rid of waste and other pollutants. Third, check the temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels of the water often and make changes as needed.
Lastly, don't feed them too much and give them a balanced diet to keep them from making too much waste. By doing these things, you can help keep the water quality for your ranchu goldfish at its best, which will help them stay healthy and live longer.
How to feed and what Ranchu Goldfish eat
Ranchu goldfish eat everything and need a balanced diet to stay healthy. They should get a mix of high-quality pellets, live or frozen food, and vegetables.
Most of their food should be pellets, and it's best to feed them twice a day only as much as they can eat in two to three minutes to avoid overfeeding and possible health problems.
As a treat, you can give your fish live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia once or twice a week. As an extra food, you can also give them blanched vegetables like spinach, peas, and lettuce.
It's important to remember not to feed them too much at once, because that can cause health problems like swim bladder disease.
Overall, Ranchu goldfish will stay healthy and live longer if they eat a balanced diet of pellets, live or frozen foods, and vegetables.
Ranchu Goldfish Often Get Sick?
Ranchu goldfish often get diseases like swim bladder disorder, dropsy, fin rot, ich, and parasitic infections. Fish with a swim bladder disorder may swim backwards or sink to the bottom of the tank.
Dropsy is a bacterial infection that makes fish swell up and can kill them if they don't get treatment right away. Fin rot is an infection caused by fungi or bacteria that can make the fins weaken and fall off.
Ich is a parasite that shows up on a fish's body as white spots. It can be treated with medicine. Ranchu goldfish can also get parasitic infections, which may need to be treated with medicine.
Ranchu goldfish can get these common diseases, but they can be prevented and treated if the water is kept clean and the fish are regularly checked for signs of sickness.
How to Help Ranchu Goldfish Feel Better?
To treat a sick Ranchu goldfish, you must first figure out what is wrong by looking at its symptoms and making a diagnosis. A swim bladder disorder, fin rot, ich, and dropsy are all common illnesses in Ranchu goldfish.
After the disease is found, the sick fish should be kept away from healthy fish to stop it from spreading. Next, change the temperature, pH level, and ammonia level of the water to the best ranges for the illness.
Medicines like antibiotics, antifungals, or treatments for parasites may be needed and should be given as directed. Lastly, keep an eye on the fish's progress and keep treating it until the symptoms go away.
How to make Ranchu Goldfish
Breeding ranchu goldfish is the process of choosing which fish to mate and how to raise them so that the offspring have desirable physical traits.
Ranchu goldfish are a type of fancy goldfish with a round body, a clear head growth, and no dorsal fin.
When breeding ranchu goldfish, you need to pay close attention to the water quality, the fish's diet, and their genes to make sure the fish are healthy and happy and that their offspring have the traits you want.
As pets, Ranchu goldfish?
Ranchu goldfish are wonderful pets for people who like to keep fish. They are a type of fancy goldfish with a round body, a hump on their back, and double tail fins that give them a unique look.
Because Ranchu goldfish are different, they need special care in a home aquarium, like a large tank with good filtration, regular water changes, and a balanced diet.
To make sure their Ranchu goldfish are healthy, owners should also be ready to keep a close eye on the water quality and take care of any health problems right away.
How much does a Ranchu goldfish cost?
Ranchu goldfish prices and availability can change based on where you live, the time of year, and the breed. Depending on size and color, Ranchu goldfish can cost anywhere from $10 to $100 or more.
Location and time of year can also affect availability. It's best to check with local pet stores or online shops to find out the current prices and what's available.
How Ranchu Goldfish are Different from Other Types
Ranchu goldfish can be told apart from other kinds because they look and act differently. Ranchus have round, egg-shaped bodies and a large growth on their heads called a "hood."
Their backs should be curved, and their dorsal fins should be straight. Ranchus also have two short tails that aren't as long as their bodies.
Other types of goldfish, like the Ryukin and Fantail, may have a body shape like the Ranchus, but they don't have the hood. Ryukins have a pointed head and a longer tail than Ranchus, while Fantails have a split tail and a flatter body.
Overall, the shape of the body, the way the head grows, and the way the tail looks can help you tell Ranchu goldfish from other kinds.
How about hearing?
Yes, goldfish can hear. They can hear and can pick up on sounds in their surroundings. Goldfish have two ears on each side of their heads. A thin layer of skin called the operculum covers the ears.
They can hear sounds because their ears have tiny bones called otoliths that move when sound waves hit them.
But it's important to keep in mind that goldfish don't have external ears like people and other mammals do. Instead, they use the structures inside their ears to hear sounds.
Studies also show that goldfish respond more to low-frequency sounds than to high-frequency sounds.
The Ranchu goldfish is a type of fancy goldfish that is known for having a round body and not having a dorsal fin. Even though different types of goldfish may look different, they should all be able to hear the same.
How to Help Sick Goldfish with Aquarium Salt: An Expert's Guide
To help a sick goldfish, dissolve the right amount of aquarium salt in a separate container of water.
Then, slowly add the saltwater to the aquarium over the course of several hours while watching the fish for signs of stress. Use one tablespoon of aquarium salt for every gallon of water, and do this as many times as needed.
But it's important to remember that aquarium salt can't cure all illnesses. If the fish's condition gets worse or doesn't get better, it's best to talk to a vet.
Do Your Goldfish Turn Red?
There are many things that can make a goldfish turn red, but genes and selective breeding are usually to blame. Some types of goldfish are naturally red, like the "Red Cap Oranda" or the "Red Ryukin."
Goldfish's colors can also be affected by things like the quality of the water, what they eat, and how much light they get.
If the water conditions aren't good or if they don't get enough food, goldfish can lose their bright colors or get new ones. So, if you want your goldfish to have the best coloration, you should keep their environment clean and healthy.

New Year Hike (Toronto)
In an incredibly satisfying “end of year wrap”-style, my first hike of 2021 linked up all of my previous hikes throughout the city. It was also probably my longest hike - about 11 kilometres (7 miles). I met a friend and colleague for today’s hike at Broadview Station. It snowed a bit last night so the city was looking beautiful, and temps were around freezing - not too cold!
We walked to Chester Hill Lookout, which I was a bit disappointed in - the lookout view is mostly of the DVP and other highways. From there, we walked up to Todmorden Mills Park.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We explored this area a bit and then continued along Pottery Road. I was intrigued by “Fantasy Farm”. The horses were only screaming horror movie to me. I’d like to come back and find out what a fantasy farm entails in the future - the walks in the area are chained off for now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the underpasses we walked through had animal-themed pillars:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Lower Don Trail ran through Pottery Road and we took a short detour up this trail to admire the river for a bit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The designs used to encourage safe crossing were clever I felt - the middle section of the road has a path that forces a momentary pause in the middle before completing your crossing. The road also has a fun ecological pattern (blue waves) painted in the crossing sections, instead of the usual yellow lines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After this detour, we followed Bayview down to Evergreen Brickworks. This was the “aha” moment for me, I hadn’t been able to see this trail (on the opposite side of the road as Brickworks) on my previous hikes. The trail was winding...AND it got us there!
Tumblr media
The big pond (resevoir? body of water?) at Brickworks was frozen with a thick layer of ice that was beginning to get a bit slushy.
Tumblr media
We passed through Evergreen’s South/West parking lot and followed a trail (neither of us knew where this would lead). There was a wide clearing followed by a very icy trail, and we were suddenly in Beaumont Park - another trail to follow!
Tumblr media
We followed the Park Reserve Drive trail north through David A. Balfour Park. Here’s a cute hockey player I made the acquaintance of.
Tumblr media
We exited David A. Balfour Park just below the Mount Pleasant Cemetery via a staircase a bit north of the Vale of Avoca (I’ll never get sick of over the top landmark names).
This was us after 3 hours of winter hiking!

Male tiefling x male reader (nsfw)
Edit which I’m including in all my works after plagiarism and theft has taken place: I do not give my consent for my works to be used, copied, published, or posted anywhere. They are copyrighted and belong to me.
Here, for your delight and delectation, is Killygren the tiefling, another character from Starfall Springs! See this dashing rogue’s character art and bio info here in case you missed it.
His story has been up on Patreon for a little while, and now it’s time to put it up on here. There’s another Starfall Springs story that’s been up on there too, but you’ll have to wait for that one, featuring an orc.
Tumblr media
Halfway through one of the hottest summers on record, you bought a bus ticket and rode it to the end of the line.
Unconventional, unpredictable, and possibly unwise though the decision may have been, you simply snapped and needed a break.
The city was stifling, the traffic overwhelming, and you needed green fields, perhaps some cool, breezy woodland, or the soft caress of an ocean breeze. Starfall Springs, you knew from an advertisement you’d seen on the Underground, had all three. And a huge number of non-human residents as well, which, you had to admit, made you curious.
Your travelling companion on the bus was a very elderly harpy lady who saw that you were travelling alone and proceeded to talk your ear off about the local area as you drew near to the town. In fact you didn’t mind because she was actually quite interesting and very sweet.
“That’s Jaime’s farm,” she said, nodding out of the dusty window at an old farmhouse in the distance, surrounded by open pasture. There was a round-pen for training horses, and a number of horses were standing in the shade of some huge beech trees beside a field of sheep and goats and another with a small herd of russet red cows. “He’s a sweetheart,” she said, but you had begun to tune the rest of it out by then. The lilting movements of the bus, and the warmth in the air, made you feel slightly sleepy, and it was hard to focus on her voice.
Eventually, you helped her off the bus and inhaled deeply. Already the air was different here; fresher, sharper despite the haze of pollen in the air. She thanked you for being “Such a polite young man,” and made her way off along the banks of the fast-flowing river which carved through the centre of the old collection of buildings.
Alone once again, you decided to head off towards the wide, paved market square in front of you. Stall holders yelled and called jovially, selling everything from fresh fish and meat to summer produce, cakes, handmade goods, knives, and even little witchy charms. You caught sight of a palomino centaur selling cider and apple juice, apple jelly, apple compote, and even dried apple crisps, and beside her was an orc wearing an apron which bore the logo of a local dairy. His stall had the most amazing array of different cheeses, and you paused long enough to be offered a free sample.
“Visitor?” he asked jovially.
You nodded. “Yeah, just thought I’d make an escape from the city for the day. Maybe even for the weekend…”
“Well, if you need a place to stay, Killy’s inn - the Inglenook over there - is great,” he said, pointing towards an old timber-framed building on the far side of the market square.
“Thanks,” you grinned.
The orc smiled back at you, and you marvelled at how open and friendly everyone seemed here, unlike the city where the majority of inhabitants were human, and they seemed singularly morose and unfriendly.
You wandered through the market for a while, your rucksack bashing uncomfortably against your back, until you came to the far side of the open plaza. Down the length of the main road out of the small town of Starfall Springs, you glimpsed the rolling countryside beyond. Gods, but it was idyllic.
The hills in the furthest distance were raked with lines of grapevines, the terracotta roofs of the vineyard buildings glowing in the heat of the summer sunshine, and a few miles away there looked to be a vast fruit orchard. Heat haze marred any real details, so you turned away and made your way back into the town, winding your way down cool, narrow, ancient streets where any number of little shops were tucked away, from antique stores to craft shops, some with pottery and ceramics made locally, to small greengrocers.
You emerged at the other end of town near the duck pond and you paused a moment in the cool shade of the poplar trees and gazed into the murky depths. A bubbling near the far edge drew your attention, and you stared, astonished, as a horse’s head surfaced from the murky water. The horse heaved itself out of the water at the opposite edge of the pond, duckweed and little water flowers clinging to its greenish-black coat and studding its flowing black mane. It shook itself and you continued to stare openly as it trotted off towards the temple which stood not far away from this end of town, in the middle of an open meadow.
“What the…?” you breathed, realising it must be some kind of water spirit, probably a kelpie. That just wasn’t the kind of thing you saw everyday in the city though; there were very few places left which were pure and unpolluted enough for creatures like that to survive. As if to drive home the point, a tiny, glowing fairy zipped past your face, laughing and trailing a wake of sparkling dust behind them that made you sneeze and take a step back. Wherever the dust hit, the plants turned a violent pink for a few seconds before fading and returning to their usual hues.
As enchanting as the whole place was, eventually your stomach started to rumble, and you looked about for somewhere to eat. Perhaps you might even get a cheeky lunchtime pint while you were at it. It was a weekend after all.
Back in the central marketplace, you saw the old, traditional pub sign of the Inglenook swinging slightly as a breeze sighed around the square. The orc’s recommendation from earlier floated back into your mind, and you decided that you’d pop in and see what it looked like at least. You didn’t have to commit yourself to staying there if you didn’t want to.
The inside was tastefully decorated, with both traditional and modern features, though the bar at the far end was a very old fashioned, high pub bar, with a huge number of beers and ales on tap, and a vast array of spirits displayed on the wall behind.
Tables dotted the bar area, and the place was packed. You sighed, thinking it’d take ages for you to be served, and were on the verge of turning round and finding a quiet cafe somewhere else when the shattering of a glass made you halt.
You glanced around, drawn by the noise, and saw a beautiful tiefling standing beside the bar, as if he’d been about to come around the end of it and go to a table with a drink. At his dark blue, cloven hooves lay the scattered remnants of a glass tankard, foam and beer spreading in a wide pool around him. And, improbably, his eyes were locked on you.
Well, one eye was locked on you. The other was covered by an elegant sash of cloth. His long hair was a very dark blue-black, tied back in a low ponytail, and his skin - flawless save for a pale scar that bisected his mouth from upper lip to chin - was a dusty, cornflower blue. There was no white sclera to the visible eye, and the iris was an intense, fiery gold, with a slit, catlike pupil, while his left eye was covered by a sash of Tyrian purple silk with gold thread here and there, as if to accentuate the colour of his right eye.
After a second or two of staring dumbly at you as if you were some long-lost friend, the tall, slender tiefling shook his horned head, and seemed to come to his senses. A faun appeared from behind the bar with a cloth and a dustpan and brush and told him to step back while they swept up the mess.
You turned to go, not wanting to linger, despite feeling there was something going on that you’d missed. A few patrons were looking from the tiefling to you and back again, but most had either ignored the incident or returned to their lunchtime chatter.
You’d barely made it to the door before you felt a soft tap on your bicep and you glanced around to see that the tiefling had come over to you. This close up, you took in the beautiful horns that curled first backwards over his thin, tapering ears and then up towards his forehead again. The left horn ended in a gold tip and you saw tiny gold hoops flashing at his earlobes too. He was a bit taller than you, and you swallowed nervously. He was stunningly handsome, and apart from the fact that you’d never been with a non-human before, he was exactly your type.
He smiled, showing sharp, white canines and a warm smile with little dimples in his chiselled cheeks. “Hi,” he said in a warm baritone. “I’m sorry about all that just now,” he went on, waving a hand and you caught the sparkle of silver on his fingers too. “Listen, to make up for being such an ass, how about I let you have some lunch and a drink on the house?” He had an airy, lyrical, lilting accent that reminded you, for absolutely no reason at all, of summer evenings and mayflies dancing over still water.
“Really, you don’t have to do that,” you said, perplexed. “I mean…”
He smiled again and stretched out his hand in a more formal greeting. His were those beautiful kind of hands with everything in the right proportion, the dusky blue skin flecked with intriguing scars here and there, and the sight of it suddenly, strangely, made you ache to feel his touch. Things had become a bit lonely in the city, and you raised your own hand and shook his.
The skin of his palm was smooth and callused, but warm, and he held you firmly for a moment and then grinned, “My name’s Killy. Well, Killygren, no one except my mother calls me that, and I’d thank you not to use it…” he chuckled. “It’s hot out there today - let’s get you a drink at the very least…”
“I don’t understand,” you murmured.
He laughed again, a free, musical sound, and winked. “I was so struck by the sight of you, I dropped that one and made a fool of myself. We don’t get a lot of humans passing through Starfall Springs you know, and I know all of the regulars.” He jutted his sharp chin at a distant corner where an orc and a young woman were deep in conversation, their hands linked. “She was the last one to arrive. Inherited a run-down old farm not too far from town.”
“The way you speak makes it seem like the humans who do come tend to stay…”
He winked again and turned back towards the bar. He had a tail, you noted, and it hung elegantly behind him like a panther’s as he walked, hips swaying slightly, hooves clonking lightly on the wooden floorboards of the old pub. It was only then that you remembered the name that the orc had said, and realised that this must be his pub.
Emboldened, you followed him to the bar and set your rucksack down at the foot of one of the worn old bar-stools, and clambered up onto it.
“Will you let me guess your favourite?” he grinned from behind the bar.
You frowned slightly, but then allowed a slow smile to creep across your lips. “Alright.”
The faun, who had finished clearing up the shattered glass, looked up and giggled. He had a nest of golden curls and the brightest blue eyes you’d ever seen, his cheekbones smattered with a myriad freckles. “Don’t encourage him,” he said, shaking his head and making his wavy hair toss this way and that. “He’s incorrigible, and he rarely gets it wrong… Must be that tiefling magic…”
Killy did not look away from your face for a while, and you thought you saw a faintly glowing light through the fabric of the sash covering his eye, but it was gone in a heartbeat, and you chalked it up to mild heat-stroke or dehydration or something.
As if he’d read your mind, Killy said, “Well, first things first, a pint of water for the gentleman, but after that…” he made a show of stroking his chin with his long fingers.
“Like you don’t already know,” the faun snickered. “Just serve it to him and stop flirting.”
Your cheeks heated slightly, but the reaction was welcome enough, as was the attention.
Killy clutched his heart and shook his head. “I’m hurt, Dizzy. I’m hurt.”
The faun, presumably named ‘Dizzy’, thwapped him round the backside with a damp tea towel and retreated to take another customer’s order.
When Killy turned his attention back to you a few moments later, with, yes, what just so happened to be your favourite drink in his hand, he was still laughing softly. “I'm sorry about him,” he said, sliding your glass across the bar. “So, how’d I do?”
“The hype is well-founded, it seems.”
He fist-pumped playfully and turned back to the faun, sticking his tongue out at him - it was dark blue, you were surprised to see - and then turning back to you. “So, what brings you to Starfall Springs?”
“You can’t work that out as well?” you asked, somewhat acerbically, sipping the drink and trying not to show just how much you liked it.
He made a slightly odd expression, somewhere between strained and embarrassed, and said, “I could, I’m sure, but I’d rather hear it from you.”
You snorted, but soon found yourself telling the tiefling everything. You felt stuck in your job, your social and sex life was stagnating, you’d not had a decent boyfriend in years, and that morning you’d felt like a change of scene would be a good thing. “So I bought a bus ticket, and here I am.”
“And here you are,” he murmured softly. Killy listened to the whole thing. He’d sunk quietly onto a stool on his side of the bar, leaned his elbows on the counter top, and had listened; really listened. You’d not had anyone do this for you since… well… not even your brief stint at the therapist had been this cathartic. You found your hand resting on the ancient, beer-stained wood of the bar, tracing idle circles with your fingertip, and you noticed how close his fingers were to yours.
“Tell me something?” you asked bluntly after your third or fourth drink.
“Anything for you, handsome,” he grinned back. Coming from anyone else, that line would have been nauseating, but the way he said it, with that flippant, light-heartedness just made it seem somehow astonishingly sincere.
“How’d you know this was my favourite?” you said. “And how’d you get so good at listening?”
“I know things,” he said with melodrama in his one visible eye.
“No,” you countered, “No, that’s not…”
He chuckled and gripped your hand. The touch was so sudden, so unexpected that you let out a little moan that was way more sexual than you’d intended.
Killy only smiled and reached both hands up to undo the sash around his face. His long, blue-black hair was tied back off his stupidly handsome face in a low ponytail, and as he dislodged it to untie the covering, you felt the urge to touch it and run your hands through it, maybe even grip it and tug it. Your fingers twitched, but you remained still as he revealed the other half of his face.
“I don’t show just anyone this,” he said conspiratorially. “This eye was a special gift from someone who shall remain nameless at the moment, but it lets me see all sorts of things.”
You snorted, but then you looked at him anew.
He just laughed and you stared openly at his now-revealed left eye. A perfect, black pentagram hung in the middle of a glowing, ice blue iris, ringed with two black outer circles. It was unusual to say the least.
You leaned closer, fascinated. “That’s… kind of…”
“Gross?” he said. “Unnerving?”
“I was just gonna go with ‘cool’…” you finished rather lamely. “Why do you keep it covered?”
He shrugged and wrapped it up again. “I don’t always want to be poking into people’s business, you know? That way it helps reduce the ‘unexpected visions’ factor. Though when you walked in, I got an eyeful - quite literally - of you and me.”
“Wait… like…” you gestured vaguely and he laughed.
Killy leaned across the bar and whispered right in your ear, his breath tingling, “I mean, I can give you specifics.”
“Go on then,” you said, feeling oddly bold.
Without preamble, he murmured, “I saw me with my mouth around your cock…”
“Holy shit…”
He shrugged and drew back. “I’ve never had that with anyone, by the way. Must be something special about you.”
“You sure you don’t say that to all the boys?” you sneered.
Something softened in his face and he leaned back. “It’s not set in stone, you know? You can still say no. But something must be keeping you here. You’ve been here all afternoon. It’s getting late, and the last bus back to the city leaves in half an hour.”
“Shit.”
“You can still catch it if you leave now.”
The moment hung heavily between you, but one look at the way his sharp Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed got you thinking about him swallowing your release, and you felt heat pool between your legs. “What the hell,” you said. “I’m leaving tomorrow.”
“That’s the spirit,” he said with open bitterness in his voice, turning away from the bar. “You’ll have to wait til I’m done working though.”
“Fuck, that’s not what I meant,” you hastened to add. “Look, you know my whole life’s story now. You know this was a spur of the moment trip - something I’d never normally have done. It feels… I don’t know… right?”
The corner of Killy’s mouth, near the vertical scar, twitched, and he smiled. “Drink some water. I’ll be done in an hour.”
You watched him work from a quiet corner of the bar, and you definitely sobered up a fair bit in that time. Not that you’d been necessarily drunk, but something about the atmosphere had gone a long way to helping you release your inhibitions. With the water in your system, you started to note the way Killy behaved a bit more closely. He was attentive with his customers, quiet and patient, and you couldn’t help noticing from your new vantage point that he rested one hock slightly against the other whenever he paused to hear someone speak. His eyes constantly darted around, and he had a nervous habit of playing with his right earring when someone lingered too long or got too close.
His trousers were loose linen, cuffed tight around his elegant, almost cervine ankles, and but from what you could see, his legs were hairless. He was not built like a faun, despite having the hooves.
Eventually he washed his hands and swapped shifts with a huge minotaur who came in and high-fived him as he left. Killy glanced around the bar and then spotted where you had parked yourself, and he smiled.
“You’re still here,” he said when he had drawn level with your table.
Your mouth was still dry from watching the way he had dropped his shoulders in relief and the elegant way in which he had walked over to you, hips swaying softly as though he wore heels. You croaked. “Yeah.”
“Look, just because I saw one future possibility… I really mean it. You don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.”
“No strings attached, right?”
“Absolutely.”
“Ok.”
“Just like that?”
“No,” you said, shaking your head. “I’ve had a couple of pints of water and an hour to think it over. Why can’t I have something that’s still meaningful with a complete stranger?”
His lips twitched again. “Right. C’mon.”
He led you upstairs, his hooves clunking softly on the bare wooden tread of the staircase, and into a very humble bedroom at the top of the old pub. A double bed occupied one wall but the sloping ceiling took out practically half of the other side of the room. A little free-standing wardrobe stood against the far end, and a pair of low bookcases stood on either side of the bed, doubling as beside tables with little lamps. It was surprisingly spartan for such an apparently flashy tiefling.
As you dumped your bag in the corner, you looked at him in surprise and he smiled softly, standing so close you could smell the soft scent of jasmine on his long hair. He had a freckle on his cheekbone. Your eyes drifted to the scars on his lip, and you wondered where he’d got them from. Before you could ask, he was kissing you. He began slowly, hesitantly, but something about the way he treated you made you ache for more.
Blood pooled in your groin and you felt your cock stir as his hands took hold of your jaw and he groaned. He had a slight shadow along his own jaw and you relished the rasp of it against your skin. He pressed his body close, his hips rearing against yours, and you grunted softly as you felt the hardening line of his cock against your hips.
Killy backed you against the closed door and as the air left your lungs with another softly articulated grunt, his fingers found their way to your waistband. He glanced at you and saw the acceptance in your face before continuing. He let your jeans fall to the floor and he freed your cock, stroking it slowly, apparently enjoying the feeling of wrapping his hand around it, getting to know the way you felt in his hand.
He stroked you, working you slowly, luxuriantly, while your knees felt like they were going to turn to water. “Killy,” you hissed, and he caught your meaning.
You stepped out of your jeans and abandoned them, allowing him to pull you over towards the bed and push you down onto it. The tent in his own soft trousers was obvious now, and you reached your hand for it, intending to palm him briefly and tease him, but he grabbed your wrist and placed it back on the bed as he tipped you expertly down onto your back.
He took your shirt off and let his palms play over your torso. As much as you may have been underwhelmed by your own body, he seemed to relish the chance to touch it. He lingered on your collarbones and on your nipples, even lowering his lips to them and kissing you over and over while his hands painted slow circles over your lower torso and hips, down towards your thighs.
“Fuck, Killy… please!” you grunted as your cock pulsed again, printing pre-come onto your skin. You felt like your skin was a size too small all over as he trailed a fingertip down the line between thigh and hips, dangerously close to your sensitive balls. “Fuck! Stop teasing me!”
He laughed and took you by surprise by lapping the tip of his dark tongue against the head of your cock, tasting you. His one visible eye rolled closed at the taste of you, and in one swift motion he licked his lips and took you all the way to the back of his throat.
As your tip hit the silky soft flesh of his throat, you gasped and cursed.
He closed his fingers around the base of your cock as he withdrew, keeping his cheeks hollowed, and he began to suck. The heat and slide of his mouth over your hard cock was incredible, and he clearly enjoyed the feeling too.
He was as clever with his hands as he was with his lips and tongue. Killy worked your cock with his mouth, alternating between long, regular strokes and teasing sucks and licks around the head of your cock, just sliding you in and out of his lips before dipping his head and letting you hit the back of his throat again. Time slid by, but all too soon you were shuddering on the edge of release.
“Killy…” you hissed. “I’m…”
White heat built rapidly and you knew you were very close.
He sucked just a little harder, his fingertips tracing just behind your balls, and you came hard into his mouth. He swallowed you down without breaking eye contact with you.
The intensity of your release had taken you somewhat by surprise.
Sure, it had been a while since someone had blown you, but still, the way he’d lavished attention on you had been something else. He stayed there while your cock throbbed and leaked the last drops of your release onto his tongue, only drawing back and licking his lips when you had completely finished.
“Did the vision live up to reality?” you finally rasped as you lay back, slightly dazed.
He smiled. “You don’t want to know what else I just saw…”
“Something tells me I might enjoy it?” you hedged. “Just… gimme a minute…”
Killy lay down on his back, still fully clothed, and smiled, glancing sideways at you. “I’m yours for the night.”
