Jess Watches // Sun 12 May // Day 228 Synopses & Favourite Scenes & Poll
The Resident (with mum) 3x10 Whistleblower (mid season break)
On Devon's last day as an intern, he and Conrad are faced with a moral dilemma over a suicidal patient who is in need of a liver transplant. When Bell discovers that Cain is keeping braindead patients alive in order to boost his survival rates and add to Red Rock's profits, he decides to take matters into his own hands. Meanwhile, Adaku goes into early labor, causing a strain on her heart and Mina is left in doubt over how to best handle her care.
You just knew Conrad wasn't gonna make it to the end of his shift without being caught. Red Rock pounced. Hopefully Conrad's dad helps defeat them. How smug they were to demote Bell, but him being more focused on making sure Kit gets to keep her job. And I hope Adaku and baby are ok.
Star Trek: Prodigy 1x14 Crossroads
When the crew attempts to secure transport to the Federation, they unwittingly cross paths with the Vice Admiral who is hunting them.
I like that Starfleet aren't clean cut 'good guys'. They seem to be thriving on the power afforded to them by the Federation and the story is building effectively to show how dangerous that can be.
Amphibia 1x12 Civil Wart / Hop-Popular
Anne exposes Wartwood to a teen romance film, and the town is split on the movie's love triangle. / After losing his stand, Hop Pop decides to run for mayor of Wartwood.
Shipping wars are serious business in Wartwood. Sequel Plot Twist: the boys are in love too! I had a good giggle at the end with not-so-subtle references to fandom culture. / And being a theatre major, Hop Pop would be a marvellous mayor.

Which controversial ship is the best
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Explanations under the cut!
Galadriel/Halbrand (Lord of the Rings: Rings of Power) 60 reblogs - 5614 words total.
I didn't read it but it's something about homophobia and racism and misogyny if you like or dislike the ship, i'm not sure which one.
Katara/Aang (Avatar The Last Airbender) 58 comments - 65 reblogs - 796 words.
The arguing actually happened on the Katara/Zuko poll, but it was about this ship. Mostly Zutara shippers complaining about Kataang shippers but i saw maybe 2 kataang shippers in the comments. I repeat: Kataang is on here because it was incredibly controversial on my blog
Laios/Toshiro (Dungeon Meshi) A few comments and reblogs, 228 words out of what I can count + someones 644 word post that was linked to me.
The reason for this is because I jokingly used the tag "shuro has the worst case of allistic disease i've ever seen", because the way he exploded at Laios reminded me of the experiences i've had with allistic people who secretly hate me but never told me. This means I hate asian people and think only white men can be autistic.
Shiro/Keith (Voltron: Legendary Defender) 43 comments
This ship is pseudo-incest and a man grooming a teenager because they met when Keith was an unspecified younger age and Shiro was an unspecified older age. I'm gonna pass away
Zim/Dib (Invader Zim) A few comments and an ask but it stopped quickly
I haven't watched Invader Zim, but I allowed it on the premise that Zim is seen as a child (because I don't like adult/child ships obv). But Zim's age is a big debate.
Yugi Mutou/Yami Yugi (Yu-Gi-Oh) Many reblogs saying the same thing about me
I haven't watched the anime. I saw the same guy twice with the same name and tagged it as "selfcest" incase someone had the tag filtered. This singular tag caused multiple comments and reblogs telling me that it's not selfcest and that it's offensive to DID systems to call it selfcest. I almost snapped here, honestly.
Time to vote! Explode my notes if you want, there's multiple good choices to pick from.

💚 Artists and titles will be revealed after the poll closes, so check back for results! Until then, please don't mention the song title in reblogs! (Guesses about everything else are fine and encouraged though; have fun!) 💚

*slaps poll function* This baby can fit so much anime in it
Hey remember that time I took 4 weeks to watch Banana Fish then marathoned 38 episodes of Sailor Moon in 3 days? Anyway, poll.
If you're new here, we poll anime so I don't have to choose what to watch. Doesn't matter if you're friend or stranger; you have the power to force a person to watch anime. And that's a very great power.
Propaganda* (*yapping) below the poll. You are allowed to reblog for whatever reasons you see fit, in fact I encourage it. You don't have to know me, follow me, like me, or have watched/enjoyed/heard of any of these shows to vote for one - frankly, it's funnier if we're all just winging it, right?
Propaganda:
One Piece - Missing my Straw Hats over here. This poll option will count for Season 7 (196-228 + any movies chronologically in that stretch) of One Piece.
Free! - The deal has always been that the longer Free! stays in the polls, the more 50% Off! quotes I get to use in the buttons. You can vote for it, I encourage it even (democracy, baby!), but just know I am nowhere near out of 50% Off! quotes. I have a notes app note about it, and I haven't even finished a rewatch of the series to collect quotes. Like, I'm not even at the bottle episode, my dudes.
Fruits Basket 2019 - Started watching, got busy doing a Master's, didn't finish. Have been slowly collecting and reading the collector's editions of the manga though.
Food Wars! - Sometimes, I give you the power to do unspeakable damage to my psyche. It's in your hands now.
Kamisama Kiss - I'm never gonna shut up about the fact that I learned that my favourite dub VA is Tomoe from dicking around on Behind the Voice Actors instead of someone kindly informing me.
Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun - Looks really cute and funny and honestly? While I haven't heard much about it from many different sources, the ones I have seen talking about this one say it's absolute gold. Very exciting. Give me the paranormal Wattpad fanfic of anime.

Kabru wears a really cool zombie costume and offers Rin some of his candy! How sweet, no pun intended!
Tumblr media
The poll results were to keep the Halloween Kabru for today, 228 days before Halloween, instead of selecting a different Kabru and using this for Halloween, so Happy early Halloween! Here’s a closeup (with more description in the alt so the first ID didn’t get too long) in case Kabru is hard to see! Just a heads up, this second alt description is pretty long!

Top Season 5 and 6 (and Movie) Sterek Moment: The Winner
Hello!
The fifth, sixth and movie moment poll has concluded. The winner of this poll is going to go on to my best Sterek moment ever poll.
Here is the winner of Season 5, 6 and the Movie:
🥇1. Derek's version of events/Bridal carry flashback - 18.4%
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So this was the most voted in, and a fairly tight race. Since it was a tumblr poll and not on google forms, I think that made it easier to get more votes. This had a total of 228 votes. Again, if you're interested to see how the rest of the moments placed, here are the results:
Tumblr media
(Haha and yes you can see in my screenshot that I voted for the winner myself :D)
Alright, now that all the seasons (and movie) are done, I'll be moving onto my ultimate Sterek moment poll. I'll be posting those right away as we already have the moments, so stay tuned for that here momentarily!
And thank you for everyone who participated in this poll! 🥰

Here's a fandom take, as promised!
HOT TAKE TOURNAMENT!
PRELIMINARY #228
Tumblr media
Submission 770
Edward Elric and Winry Rockbell were a bad endgame.
(only recent FMA experience is Brotherhood) I'm an avid fan of childhood best friends. to me, Winry, Al and Ed were and still are an inseparable trio. the Rockbells are Ed's last remaining family aside from Al and to me I don't see why you would put romance in there, especially due to the fact that in Brotherhood at least, they call each other siblings a lot. I think childhood best friends to lovers can be written extremely well some time but in this instance, it felt rushed and poorly executed and forced. I didn't see any slow buildup to show that they're falling for each other; there was one scene where Winry went "am I, am I falling for him?", and then Edward going "HAHA WHAT NO SHE'S JUST A CHILDHOOD FRIEND, NO THERE'S NOTHING THERE HAHA" when Riza asks if she's his girlfriend, and then Winry muttering to herself "I can't believe I fell for this idiot". To me, that was it. and then they're supposedly in full love with each other? that scene where Winry was in her bedroom and Ed caught her changing clothes as their first introduction after the 6-7 months timeskip and Ed was like "I. I just wanted a quiet place to eat my sandwich of course" while flustered made me so uncomfortable. And then in the final episode they became a thing or something? and then there was family photos with their kids? what happened? In my opinion it felt so poorly put together and rushed and forced like "of course they're together! she's the main girl and he's the main guy!". and not to mention how Winry's character changed after it. I feel like she became much less of a strong independent girl and more someone that needs to follow Ed around everywhere, and especially when they took her hostage in the Briggs arc, because she was his cute girl friend and she just became a damsel in distress who was there to serve as bait so Ed could do Kimblee's bidding. Over time the more her crush developed I feel like she became more of a typical powerless female protagonist who's life revolved around Ed and it's so sad.
Propaganda is always encouraged!
And remember to reblog your favourite polls for exposure!

It'll still be a few months, gotta finish this tournament after all, but I want time to prep. Monsters of the Multiverse is just Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes and Volo's Guide combined, usually even using the same art which is why they aren't there. Though I did scan them for differences, and will post both book's art on the rare occasion they differ. If something laser-focused like Fizban's Dragons or Bigby's Giants wins I'm swapping between it and something else. Maybe every other week, maybe a weekday/weekend scenario, but I don't want to do just one monster for a couple months. If this changes your vote but you clicked before you read, just let me know in a comment or ask and I'll change it after the poll ends. ...and yes, the PF2e Bestiary has more eligible creatures than that stat wise, but I can only use the creatures with a picture. Leaves out some elementals :/

I've been thinking about pacing.
Back when I was posting random thoughts about every new Shonen Jump title, I kept complaining about how they feel the need to cram everything into chapter 1. Premise, worldbuilding, main characters, some of the key supporting characters, primary antagonists, plot structure, tone, maybe a quick thesis statement. Everything gets a little time, nothing gets much development.
Contrast that with Oshi no Ko. The inciting incident is chapter 9. We get a whole chapter dedicated to the inciting incident, and we don't see it until we get eight chapters establishing our main characters and themes. We don't get the premise until the end of chapter 10. A whole volume of almost pure setup.
A slow pace, but OnK wouldn't work without it. Imagine if the 228 pages of volume 1 were compressed to the 50-ish that some Shonen Jump debuts get. Volume 1 is bookended by huge status quo changes—Dr. Amamiya's death and subsequent reincarnation, and Ai's murder and Aqua's revenge.
Realistically, we'd get maybe a dozen pages of Dr. Amamiya and his patients, maybe chapter 1 could end with Ai getting stabbed, and that leaves about 35 pages to tell the entire story of Aqua and Ruby's peaceful childhood. And that would be pretty slow by modern Shonen Jump standards; if we tried to squish Ai's death and Aqua's declaration of vengeance into chapter 1, so the reader knows what to expect and get excited about in chapter 2 (and maybe vote for OnK in the weekly popularity poll so the series doesn't get cut?), there would be less than half a chapter for the peaceful childhood.
Even if you cut Sarina and Ruby, that's not enough time to sell the reader on either Dr. Amamiya's life cut tragically short or the peaceful childhood Aqua lost when Ai was murdered. And for all my criticisms of how Ruby's character arc was wrapped up, OnK would not work without her. She's essential, and so is the time spent establishing the "normal world" before each of volume 1's status quo shifts.
You cannot tell Oshi no Ko under the constraints of a typical Shonen Jump debut. So it's a good thing Aka Akasaka wasn't working under those constraints! For starters, OnK is serialized in Young Jump, not Shonen Jump. More importantly, Akasaka got pretty famous from Kaguya-sama, so readers and editors alike are willing to give him the benefit of the doubt where they wouldn't for the mangaka of those new Jump series.
Shonen Jump puts its mangaka under a lot of pressure. If they succeed, they could become one of the most famous authors in the world, a small step below living legends like Eiichiro Oda. But if they fail—if volume 1 tankoban sales are weak or your weekly popularity poll results start to slump—they might find out they have got a month to wrap up their story before it leaves the magazine. And that includes the chapters they already submitted.
So you can't just tell a good story. You have to convince readers that you're going to tell a good story from chapter 1, you have to explain that story in the first 50 pages; you have to keep convincing readers that your story is worth reading, worth supporting, worth continuing.
You can't write Oshi no Ko under those constraints. In fact, I'm not sure you can tell any story.
I get the theory behind Jump's editorial practices. If you only let the strongest stories endure in your magazine, you'll have a handful of really strong stories plus a constant churn of new ones, good for both novelty and for increasing the odds that one of the new hopefuls will turn out to be one of those strong stories.
But that pressure forces authors to adapt or die, and the adaptations make the stories weaker. They constrain the stories in Jump to premises that can be fully explained in a handful of pages, squeezed between the handful of pages explaining their protagonist and the handful explaining the setting and so on and so forth. They also constrain how those relatively simple stories can be told, making it harder to build on those simple concepts.
And that's a problem Oshi no Ko didn't face. Say what you will about the back third or so, it had a really strong opening, specifically because of its slow pace.
