Sorry for the silence on our end these last few days! We’re hard at work script editing and sending emails, writing contracts and setting up meetings, plus finalising everything needed to fulfil our Kickstarter backer’s tier rewards!
Hopefully we’ll have some fun things to show you very soon! For now, have a little snippet from episode two Jeremy thanking everyone for their support this month.

A note on the most recent episode of Welcome to Night Vale, #230
This episode was, I believe, the 11th anniversary of the show. This means it was about ten years ago I was on vacation in Wales with my wife, where I wrote the albums Madoc and Taran Wanderer. It was while on this trip - knowing I was about to lose my day job at a rapidly sinking book publisher - that I first received a communication from a fan in Brazil asking for my permission to use music in a Portuguese “fan translation” of the podcast. The fact that the show had reached so far away and inspired people to translate it was, in retrospect, one of the first signs of what was to come, which ended up completely changing my life. But at the time I simply thought it was neat and moved on, and we spent days tromping through sheep pastures looking at cairns and standing stones in a remote corner of Ynys Mon. While doing so, we encountered a rusty old farm gate that sang a particularly haunting song as it opened and closed, which I recorded. I thought it would be cool to use that sound in this season finale episode, and so it’s what I used (well, a small fragment of it) to play a new version of the main theme music. I thought the sound ending up working well atmospherically with the episode as well.
If you’d like to use that sound yourself, you can grab it here: https://freesound.org/people/earwicker23/sounds/193712/
Also, I’m not going to spoil the plot of the episode but it concludes in a rather dramatic fashion and required a specific sound design element. I’ll admit it had me stumped for a few days, but here’s what I did. I had a canvas sack filled with a few ice packs that had melted, effectively they were just little plastic pouches of water. I dropped this from a height of about eight feet, landing 1.5 feet from the microphone (an sm58). That’s source one. Source two was a ziploc bag filled with a mix of wet and dry cheerios, plus an egg, crushed by foot. The two sources were each slowed down very slightly and then combined, with the first source somewhat louder. So there you go, in case you ever need to do… that.

Anyone interested in doing a radio drama-type podcast? I love story telling in any format, and while I have a WIP I’m trying to get traditionally published I feel like my writing style better fits an episodic medium. I would love to collaborate with anyone interested - actors, writers, musicians, producers WHOEVER 😊

"Into the Frayed" Project
Im making a little masterpost for my audio drama WIP, which will allow me to conveniently send you where you need to be sent if you're interested in it.
Here are all posts I've ever tagged with "Into the frayed". And here are all the ones that relate specifically to the production process. Theres also the gods, if you want to look at the worldbuilding.
Whats "Into the Frayed"?
Into the Frayed is a fantasy audio drama, told via letters. It happens in my fictional world of Valfern (Val coming from the german word "Wall" meaning wall or fence, Fern coming from the german word for far, in the distance, or yonder). If you wanna know how to say that properly, google how someone would say Walküre (thats Valykrie) in german. The "fern" is honestly fairgame because I say whatever feels best. Sometimes more german, sometimes more english. Go bonkers.
Valfern is a world in which magic isnt perceived as positive, instead being a corrupting and malevolent force. Unfortunately, magic doesnt care much about its public perception and therefore sinks its teeth into many a thing, including people. These people are called "Jinxes" and generally ostracised. Theres a whole lot more to it (old gods and new gods and a surprising amount of plant research) but thats the gist :p
Our protagonist is Vaughn, a person (because I havent cast any voices yet, they could be any gender) who is slowly developing into a Jinx and needs to run away from their village to save themselves. They take this journey together with a Ravensworth (thats a fancy title for a mercenary) and write letters to their last ally among wolves: Franzis, their childhood friend. Vaughns goal is to make it beyond Sentinel, the city at the mountains border. Its a known story that the people beyond dont view Jinxes as Jinxes and if they just make it that far, they would be fine.
So only one question remains: Will they make it?
So, what now?
I'm working on finishing a "Proof of concept" episode, that has the first exchange between Vaughn and Franzis and is about... 5 letters aka 10-15 long? If that works out and I like it and enjoy making it, I have enough of a plot outline to script a small seasons worth of content (no more than 90 minutes total, because of sanity).
I did plot out the entire storyline and the supporting cast, but one needs to start small and grow steadily instead of burning once and brightly.
Anyways. I hope this gives you some insight into what I'm doing. If you have any questions, do ask. Especially world building questions.
Otherwise, I'll just start word vomiting all my research in small tidbits into my Tumblr.
Bye :)

I'd really like another podcast gig. It would help out, a lot.
If you're looking for a producer/editor for your show, let's talk! Hoping for a regular, ongoing project. Would definitely prefer an audio drama or a TTRPG actual play.

So, part of my real life job is that I produce a podcast. And I’m not sure there is anything more heart wrenching than watching someone be interviewed who is so sweet and has something important to say and wants so badly to get their point across, but who is just not good at interviews.
It’s like, okay friend, you’re definitely making my job harder, but I’m going to do everything in my power to make you sound good. But damn, it’s going to be a loooong night.

FUNDRAISING COMPLETE!
We did it, gang! The fundraising campaign for The Holmwood Foundation has officially ended, reaching just over 100% of our goal! While we didn't reach any of our stretch goals, we now have enough to make season one a reality!
We were fully aware going into this that 23k was a lot to ask, and we are so, so grateful to everyone who has supported us since we began this journey in June. We can't wait to show you all what we have planned for Holmwood!
WHAT COMES NEXT?
We should be sending out our Backer survey in the next few days. We are also double-checking our digital rewards, and should be ready to send them out to our backers in the next few weeks. Likewise, we will begin ordering our physical rewards for shipping in December! We’ll be providing updates as they come.
If you run into any issues pre or post receiving your rewards, please let us know.
WHAT’S OUR TIMELINE?
Production-wise, we’re also heading straight into editing our Season One scripts, which should hopefully be ready to send to our actors early in the new year, and sending out contracts to our cast and crew. From there, we’re aiming for a Spring/early Summer 2025 release, but will keep you updated every step of the way in regards to where we are!
WHAT HAPPENS IN THE MEANTIME?
In the meantime we will continue to man our socials and provide additional content for our followers! We would love to get some of our character/worldbuilding extracts into audio format, and we will of course be drawing more art and releasing script snippets as we go.
As always, you are welcome to contact us at any time using our email address [email protected], or on any of our socials (we are theholmwoodfoundation anywhere but Twitter and Bluesky, where we are theholmwoodfnd) Also visit our website at www.theholmwoodfoundation.com for additional information, including our press pack and current available transcripts.

How Podcasting Became One of the Major Forces in the Digital World

The Rise of Broadcast Broadcast first emerged in the early 2000s as a new way to distribute audio files over the internet. What started as a niche hobby soon exploded into a mainstream media format. By 2005, the broadcast platform iTunes began featuring podcasts for easy browsing and downloading by users. This gave broadcast considerable visibility and boosted its popularity. Many early adopters started podcasts from their homes, often as a passion project. However, as equipment costs came down and platforms matured, broadcast became a viable career option for some creators. Today, millions of people tune into podcasts on a regular basis, listening to a vast array of genres from entertainment to news and beyond. Growth of the Broadcast Industry As Podcasting listenership grew, so did the opportunities for professionalization. Established media companies jumped into broadcast, while startups aimed to build platforms and services for the industry. Advertisers also took note and began sponsoring popular shows. By 2018, podcast ad revenue in the US topped $479 million according to the Interactive Advertising Bureau. This got the attention of big tech as well. In 2020, Spotify acquired major podcast companies like The Ringer and Joe Rogan Experience in billion-dollar deals, signaling their commitment to become the dominant force in broadcast. Meanwhile, Amazon, Apple, Google and others ramped up their own offerings. With major corporate backing fueling growth, the broadcast industry has become a multibillion-dollar business. Rise of Niche Genres With the glut of content on offer, podcasts have increasingly specialized to serve dedicated audiences. A reflection of this is the proliferation of niche genres that go beyond traditional talk and news formats. For example, the popularity of true crime podcasts took off in the mid-2010s, led by massive hits like Serial. Other storytelling genres like drama and sci-fi podcasts also emerged. Meanwhile, hobby and interest-based shows catered to communities centered on topics as wide-ranging as comedy, religion, language learning, history, and more. This allowed for high production value audio dramas and customizable content experiences for hyper-focused listeners. Broadcast's flexibility has made it a booming platform for serving long-tail audiences with passionately followed niche content. Broadcast Goes Global Fueled by its success in the US and other English-speaking markets, Podcasting has now expanded globally. Local creators are producing pods in many languages like Spanish, French, Portuguese, Mandarin, Hindi and others. International audiences are discovering new shows and genres from around the world. Global platforms are also getting involved, with Spotify alone reporting having 2.2 million podcasts on its platform by 2021 in over 80 markets and 30 languages. Podcast consumption is growing rapidly internationally, especially in youth demographics, as mobile connectivity and streaming services spread. The ubiquity of smartphones and availability of free/low-cost podcast apps have helped drive the global reach of the format beyond any single country or language. Get more insights on Podcasting

Foul Play-by-play Podcasts to be Performed Live on YouTube
An episode of the Minnesota Foul Play-by-play done got lost, so we're gonna go live on YouTube from now on. You're welcome?
We did a great episode of Minnesota Foul Play-by-play on Monday that was interrupted by a “low disk space” message. Naturally, I started deleting things to make room for the recording, and after I thought the recording was successfully transferred to my external hard drive, where I store all our previous recordings, I deleted the Zoom files saved to my computer. Well, apparently the recording was…
