2024–09–10 After occupying the first quarter of the hour with something else, we hear from the Paul Scherrer Institute in Switzerland, and a recently published report on “Technology Monitoring of Nuclear Energy”. This is officially part of the “Energy Strategy 2050”, which calls for Switzerland to decarbonize its whole energy supply while withdrawing from nuclear power, which currently supplies more than a third of Swiss electricity. Recent decisions by the Federal Council will hopefully lead to a reconsideration of this “Strategy”.

(I already read like 30 chapters of crimson rivers in the past few days, and normally it would have taken me weeks to read that much) So thank you for doing this!

Honestly, the fact that these fics are helping others who traditionally wouldn't be able to consume fanfiction is amazing! It brings me so much joy that more people are able to consume content from all of these incredible authors.

Happily, we discovered a most excellent substitute for coal within a few decades after this article was printed, and by the late 1950s we were setting it to work. Every indication was that its manifest advantages over coal would lead to a large reduction in the use of that fuel, averting the danger of climate change due to CO₂ emissions.

I found a notice to that effect in a magazine from 1958, and read it out as part of one of my shows. I need to take a photo of that column so I can use it to reply to this one when it shows up, as it so often does.

So what happened?

The “climate crisis” as we know it may reasonably be said to be essentially political in origin.

We can scarcely fail to point out aNONradio, the streaming audio service of the venerable SuperDimension Fortress Public Access Unix System, which is one of the oldest non–university, non–commercial, non–government things on the Internet, having started as a BBS in the 1980s in Dallas.

aNONradio is where you can hear A Step Farther Out at 1900 UTC Saturdays, and Hear Now the Words! at 1500 UTC Tuesdays and Fridays, which may be of interest to you if you are reading this post. Other shows cover the gamut from experimental audio to Buddhist meditation to live play–by–play of events in a MOO to a daily show which very much resembles a diary webcomic in audio form.

I'll always talk up internet radio stations because I don't think the average person is aware that they're free, can run in your browser (or in any program that can connect to them), work on your phone, run better than a youtube tab, and give you a much better selection of music than you could get from a general algorithmic playlist

(also lots of them have live shows which you can tune into for free)
