PM Modi to Address CII Post-Budget Conference

Opposition Rally for Kejriwal’s Release

Imagine Trump having been in office since 2014 but with mostly positive approval ratings and more ruthless repression of democratic values – that scenario will begin to give you some Idea of what India has been like under Hindu nationalist authoritarian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Modi’s BJP party just lost a major election in the state of West Bengal despite efforts by the Modi-controlled Election Commission of India to conduct voting in a way that would be favorable to the BJP.

Voting was dragged out in eight stages in a 5+ week period to allow Modi to conduct numerous large Trump-style superspreader campaign rallies as the B.1.617 variant of COVID-19 was destroying the lives of tens of thousands of Indians.

The center-left party of Modi’s most significant political opponent, Mamata Banerjee, won 73% of the seats in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly with 2 seats of the 294 seat chamber yet to be decided in mid May. Mamata Banerjee is currently the only female chief minister of any of India’s 28 states or 8 union territories. She has been an outspoken critic of Modi’s BJP government.

Sadly, Modi himself doesn’t have to face the voters until 2024. But there are some big state elections coming up before then including the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat – Modi’s home state.

This meme from India features ignorant comments by Modi and other BJP politicians. Their knowledge of science and history is comparable to that of typical members of the Trump administration. Is it any wonder that India this week became only the second country to confirm over 20 million cases of COVID-19?
