Punjab bandh today: Over 220 trains affected, 157 cancelled and several rescheduled
Punjab bandh today: Farmers under the banner of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13 after their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.
Tumblr media
Punjab bandh: The ongoing bandh in Punjab has caused significant disruptions in rail services across the state. According to official reports, as many as 221 trains have been affected with 157 of them getting cancelled and 14 being rescheduled. The bandh was announced last week by both groups, which have been protesting at Shambhu and Khanauri border points between Punjab and Haryana since February 13. Their march to Delhi was stopped by security forces.  Vande Bharat Express among cancelled trains The protesting farmers will block rail tracks from 7 am to 4 pm at several locations, thus disrupting the movement of passenger and goods trains. In view of this, the Northern Railways has cancelled 157 trains, including three Vande Bharat Express -- two between New Delhi and Vaishno Devi and another between New Delhi and Amb Andaura. Prominent trains cancelled The other trains that have been cancelled include three Shatabdi Express from New Delhi to Kalka, Amritsar, Chandigarh and several other high-end trains operating in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The railways also announced to partially cancel seven trains, regulate 14 others, reschedule 13, short-originate 15 and short-terminate 22 trains. Ambala police have advised commuters travelling between Delhi and Chandigarh to take alternative routes via Panchkula, Barwala, Mullana, Yamunanagar, Radaur, Ladwa and NH-44 at Pipli. Why has bandh been called?  Kisan Mazdoor Sanghrash Committee's leader  Sarvan Singh Pandher confirmed that the bandh is part of their ongoing protest and is aimed at raising their demands. This bandh will force the Centre to accept the demands of farmers, the farmer leader said as he slammed the union government for failing to accept the demands of farmers, he added. The decision to give a call for a 'Punjab bandh' was taken last week by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha.

Punjab Bandh Disrupts Life as Farmers Continue Protest for Dallewal’s Health
Punjab is witnessing widespread disruptions today as farmers’ unions have called for a statewide bandh in support of their leader, Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on the 35th day of his hunger strike. The bandh, which began at 7 AM and will continue until 4 PM, has resulted in severe traffic and transport disruptions, affecting daily life across the state.
The bandh is being supported by two major farmer organizations, the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) and Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), both of which are demanding the implementation of 13 farm-related demands. Dallewal, who is leading the protest, has refused to end his hunger strike despite his deteriorating health. The farmer leader is seeking medical treatment, but he has declined all efforts by the Punjab government to shift him to a hospital. The Supreme Court has intervened, criticizing the state government for not acting sooner, and has set a deadline for Dallewal’s medical treatment by December 31.
Security has been heightened across Punjab as farmers gather at key locations, including highways, railway stations, and toll plazas. Over 200 spots on highways and link roads have been blocked by the protesters, leading to severe traffic jams. In addition, more than 150 trains, including the Vande Bharat Express, have been cancelled, disrupting travel for thousands of passengers. Public and private buses have also stayed off the roads. However, emergency services, including medical teams and fire brigades, are operational.
In major cities like Ludhiana, Amritsar, and Bathinda, farmers have staged sit-ins, further intensifying the impact of the bandh. Grain markets are also affected, as truckers have joined the protests, halting the transportation of goods. Educational institutions, including schools and colleges, are closed for the day.
While the bandh has caused significant inconvenience to the public, farmer leaders have assured that emergency services will continue to operate. The protestors are also allowing people with urgent needs, such as those traveling to airports or attending medical appointments, to pass through the blocked areas.
The Punjab government is making another attempt today to persuade Dallewal to seek medical help. A government delegation, including senior officials, is expected to meet with the farmer leader to discuss his health and encourage him to end his hunger strike. The outcome of this meeting could determine whether the ongoing protests and the bandh will continue.
The state government is under pressure to resolve the situation, as the Supreme Court’s deadline approaches. The ongoing protest and the critical health condition of Dallewal have drawn attention to the growing tensions between farmers and the state government over agricultural policies. There have been multiple deaths related to the protests already, and the protesters have not been able to reach Delhi due to police resistance. Modi's government has gotten the company formerly known as Twitter to censor the accounts of Punjabi activists so that they're inaccessible in India.
The big thing I want to highlight is the death of Shubh Karan Singh. This is an article from BBC Panjabi (I had to use Google Translate to read it, as I do not speak Punjabi); I haven't seen any major English-language news outlets reporting on what is going in Punjab. Amnesty International also has a short statement about his death. Shubh Karan Singh was killed due to a bullet wound to the head while at the protest on the border of the state of Punjab and the state of Haryana. At this point it's pretty clear that Haryana police shot him, and so it sounds like the government of Punjab is going to file a case against the Haryana police.
Btw Punjabi farmers are protesting again.

MASSIVE FARMER'S PROTESTS OUTSIDE INDIAN CAPITAL AND ACROSS THE NORTH OF THE COUNTRY
📹 Massive protests are confronted with teargas, armed police with rubber bullets and drones as thousands of farmers, mostly in India's northern Punjab region, protest on Tuesday demanding a Minimum Support Price or MSP for all crops to raise farmer's income.
Dozens of Farmer's unions participated in the strikes, calling for a "Delhi Chalo" or March to Delhi.
Police in and around the capital have erected barriers on highways surrounding New Delhi, and have begun firing tear gas and rubber bullets at the approaching farmers.
Tractors, along with thousands of farm hands, are seen in footage nearing the outskirts of New Delhi, in the northern Haryana state, being confronted by officers with gas and smoke bombs, including some dropped from buzzing drones overhead.
Authorities have shut down Internet services in some areas where protestors approach, and have erected concrete roadblocks and barriers, while local officials have banned public gatherings and are deploying extra security personnel.
Officials in New Delhi emphasized that sufficient police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed to all entry points to the city.
Farmers are demanding dozens of changes, including a new MSP or floor price for crops to increase and guarantee farmer income, as well as a full debit waiver, according to local union officials.
Political officials in New Delhi say they're open to talks, with Agriculture Minister, Arjun Munda telling reporters on Tuesday that the Federal government already is "bound to protect the interest of farmers."
"Farmers also need to understand that inconvenience shouldn’t be caused to the public,” Minister Munda said, adding the government was always ready for negotiations with the Farmer's unions.
“We are ready to do everything possible to find a solution to this issue,” he said.

Tens of thousands of farmers in Pakistan are holding protests in several cities over the government’s decision not to buy their wheat, causing them huge losses in income. The farmers in Punjab, the country’s largest province and often called the “bread basket” of Pakistan, are demanding that the government stop wheat imports that have flooded the market at a time when they expect bumper crops. At a protest in Lahore, the provincial capital, on Monday (April 29), police violently pushed back the farmers with batons and arrested dozens of them.

Dozens of Indian farmers marched toward the capital New Delhi on Friday demanding better crop prices, only to be faced by security tear gas and pepper spray.
Farmers had been camped outside the northwestern state of Punjab, considered a breadbasket for India, since February, when police halted their march.
What do we know about the protest?
Dozens of farmers revived their "March to Delhi" campaign, marching on Friday from Punjab along a key highway to Delhi. Protesters held blue and yellow flags.
Police set up heavy barricades of concrete blocks and lines of razor wire some 200 kilometers (125 miles) north of Delhi to stop the march in its tracks.
Some of the nearly 100 protesting farmers were able to break through part of the blockade before the police confronted them with teargas and pepper spray.
Indian authorities also suspended mobile internet services along the route of the procession and until December 9, under the pretext of stopping "the spread of misinformation and rumors."
What do the farmers want?
Ahead of the march, farmers' leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said that the protesters would advance as far as security forces allowed.
"We will be only around 100 people so it is not like we can break police barricades," the Reuters news agency quoted Pandher as saying.
Apart from better pay for their crops, the farmers are demanding legal guarantees of more state support for crops and a debt waiver, as well as increased compensation for land acquired by the government several years ago.
"In February, we held four rounds of talks with the government but since then there have been no further discussions on our demands," Pandher told reporters. "We want the government to let us exercise our democratic right to protest."
Farmers in India have a level of political leverage due to their numbers, where more than half of the population of some 1.4 billion depend on agriculture for their livelihood.
In 2021, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government was forced to repeal some farm laws following a year-long farmers protest outside Delhi.
