Kolkata Rape: Will the protest end today? Mamata government called the doctors again, email surfaced
Row On Kolkata Rape: The Mamata government has once again called the doctors, who are protesting for justice and other demands in the Kolkata rape murder case, for talks.
Tumblr media
Kolkata Rape Murder Case: The West Bengal government has invited doctors protesting against the rape and murder of a female doctor at the government RG Kar Hospital for another round of talks on Wednesday (September 18) at 6.30 pm. Chief Secretary Manoj Pant reiterated that the government reiterates its appeal to the protesting doctors to return to work in view of the flood-like situation in some parts of the state. He said, 'You know that there is a flood-like situation in many districts of South Bengal and a large area has been submerged.'
This will be the second round of talks between the protesting doctors and the state government within 48 hours. The first round of talks was held on Monday in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Pant said in an e-mail, 'You know that there is a flood-like situation in many districts of South Bengal and a large area has been submerged. In view of the situation, we again appeal to you to return to your work in the larger public interest and serve the common people. I, along with other members of the task force, will meet your 30-member delegation at the auditorium in Nabanna at 6.30 pm today.'
Doctors had made this demand
Earlier, the protesting doctors sitting on a dharna outside the headquarters of the West Bengal Health Department sent an email to Chief Secretary Manoj Pant demanding a discussion to resolve some important "unresolved issues" such as security in hospitals. These issues are included as their pre-condition for ending the dharna. The doctors had sent the email in reference to the meeting of their governing body which ended on Wednesday morning. The doctors raised the issue of safety and security inside government hospital premises and mentioned the promise of formation of a special task force headed by the Chief Secretary and inclusion of its details in the agenda of the proposed meeting.
What did the doctors write in the email?
In their email, the doctors wrote, 'In the context of our last meeting with the Chief Minister, we would like to reiterate that there were some major points regarding our five-point demands that could not be resolved. In particular, our fourth and fifth issues related to the development of the healthcare system, security, defense and the culture of the current threatening environment have not been resolved.' Let us tell you that in the details of the meeting held between the doctors and the government at her Kalighat residence in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday (September 16) night, a mutual agreement to form a task force was confirmed as a step taken to address the security concerns of doctors.

'No Bulldozer Action Till October 1': Supreme Court Pauses Instant 'Justice' Method
The Supreme Court's intervention was prompted by a case from Gujarat, where municipal authorities threatened to demolish a family's home after a member of the household was named in an FIR.
Tumblr media
The Supreme Court of India has temporarily halted bulldozer demolitions across the country until October 1, unless they involve public roads, water bodies, or railway lines. The court's decision reflects concerns over the widespread use of demolition as a punitive measure without proper legal oversight. The ruling was issued on Tuesday, and the court announced it would develop formal guidelines to regulate when and how properties can be demolished under municipal laws.
 Criticism of Bulldozer Justice
Last week, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justices Hrishikesh Roy, Sudhanshu Dhulia, and SVN Bhatti expressed strong disapproval of the increasing use of bulldozers in demolitions, particularly in cases where properties are destroyed without due legal process. The bench criticized what it referred to as "bulldozer justice," calling it a practice that is "inconceivable" in a nation governed by the rule of law. The justices emphasized that any state action, including demolitions, must be in accordance with the law and not used arbitrarily.
 Case in Gujarat Sparks Concern
The Supreme Court's intervention was prompted by a case from Gujarat, where municipal authorities threatened to demolish a family's home after a member of the household was named in an FIR. The family, which has lived on the land in Kathlal, Kheda district for over two decades, sought the court's protection against what they viewed as an unfair and retaliatory action.
The petitioner’s lawyer argued that the house in question was legally constructed, and the involvement of one family member in an alleged crime should not justify the demolition of their residence. The Supreme Court concurred, stating, "In a country where actions of the State are governed by the rule of law, the transgression by a family member cannot invite action against other members of the family or their legally constructed residence."
Akhilesh Yadav's Reaction
On Supreme Court's direction, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said, "Bulldozer can't be justice. It was unconstitutional, it was to scare people. Bulldozer was to deliberately suppress the voice of Opposition. I thank Supreme Court for this direction that has stopped bulldozer. CM, UP government and the people of BJP  glorified the 'bulldozer' as if this is justice...Now, when the Supreme Court has given a direction, I think the bulldozer will stop and justice will come through court."

Railway Employee Accused Of Molesting Girl, Train Passengers Beat Him To Death
The employee was beaten to death aboard a train from Bihar's Barauni to New Delhi.
Tumblr media
The employee was beaten to death aboard a train from Bihar's Barauni to New Delhi.
New Delhi:  A railway employee was beaten to death by a girl's family members and other passengers aboard a train to New Delhi early on Thursday after he allegedly sexually assaulted the 11-year-old, police said.
According to officials, a family from Siwan had boarded the Humsafar Express from Bihar's Barauni Bihar to New Delhi on Wednesday and, around 11.30 pm, Group D railway employee Prashant Kumar made a 11-year-old girl from the family sit on his seat. When the girl's mother went to the washroom later, Kumar allegedly molested the girl.
As soon as the woman came out of the washroom, the girl ran to her, hugged her and began crying. She took her mother to the washroom and told her what had happened. The mother then informed her husband, father-in-law and other passengers in the M1 (AC III tier economy) coach on the train.
The train had reached the Aishbagh junction in Lucknow when the angry passengers and family members caught hold of Kumar, took him to the area near the doors of the coach and thrashed him till the train reached Kanpur Central, which is about an hour and a half away. When the train rolled into Kanpur Central at 4.35 am on Thursday, officials from the Government Railway Police (GRP) took Kumar to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead, officials said.
While the family of the girl filed a complaint of sexual assault, Kumar's family has filed a complaint of murder.
Kumar's uncle, Pawan, said the family, which lives in Samastpur village in Bihar's Muzaffarpur district, found out that he had been beaten to death after an official from the local police station informed them.
"Prashant was not that kind of man. It seems he was killed as part of a conspiracy. He was beaten for so long, were there no personnel from the Railway Police Force around," he asked.
Superintendent of Police, GRP (Prayagraj), Abhishek Yadav said, "When the train crossed Aishbagh, the girl said she had been molested. Her family members and other passengers beat up the accused. At Kanpur Central, the accused was handed over to the GRP and a complaint was filed. When he was taken to the hospital, he was declared dead."

UP Woman Lawyer Killed For Opposing Bail Of Advocate's Sons, 6 Arrested
Advocate Mustafa Kamil, his three sons — Haider Mustafa, Salman Mustafa and Asad Mustafa — and two associates have been arrested in the case
Tumblr media
A 40-year-old woman lawyer of the district court was adducted and killed allegedly for opposing the bail pleas of an advocate’s sons and his associate in old cases, police said on Tuesday.
Advocate Mustafa Kamil, his three sons — Haider Mustafa, Salman Mustafa and Asad Mustafa — and two associates have been arrested in the case, Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik said.
According to police, lawyer Mohini Tomar had gone missing from the district court on September 3 and her body was recovered from Rekhpur minor canal a day later.
Her husband Brijendra Tomar filed an FIR, naming the six persons including Kamil, his sons and his two associates — Munazir Rafi and Keshav Mishra.
The FIR was registered at the Kasganj police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita(BNS) sections 103 (murder), 140 (1) (kidnapping or abduction with an intent to murder) and 62 (1) (criminal conspiracy).
While Kamil and his three sons were arrested last week, Rafi and Mishra were held on Monday, the SP said.
Kamil, Haider and Salman are lawyers, while Asad is an LLB student in Aligarh, police said.
Brijendra has said in his complaint that his wife was getting threats from Kamil for opposing the bail plea of his son Haider and Salman, who were accused of thrashing a young man named Shivshankar.
In the FIR, he has said that Kamil and his sons threatened her for taking up the matter and were pressuring her to withdraw from the case.
The alleged abduction happened on September 3 after Brijendra dropped his wife to the district court. He has alleged that Mohini was abducted and killed by the accused.
He also said that his wife was opposing the bail plea of Munazir Rafi in a murder case. She was representing the victim side.
Mohini’s killing had sparked protests in the district, with lawyers blocking the Kasganj-Bareilly Highway demanding justice in the case and also a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family members.

Attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh Not Communal, Issue 'Exaggerated': Yunus
During student-led violence after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ouster, the minority Hindu population faced vandalism of businesses, property damage, and temple destruction.
Tumblr media
Dhaka: Chief Adviser to Bangladesh's interim government, Muhammad Yunus, has said the issue of attacks on minority Hindus in his country is “exaggerated” and questioned the manner in which India projected it. In an interview with PTI at his official residence here, Yunus said the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh are more political than communal.
He suggested that the attacks were not communal, but a fallout of a political upheaval as there is a perception that most Hindus supported the now-deposed Awami League regime.
“I have said this to (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi also that this is exaggerated. This issue has several dimensions. When the country went through an upheaval following the atrocities by (Sheikh) Hasina and the Awami League, those who were with them also faced attacks,” the Nobel laureate told PTI.
The minority Hindu population faced vandalism of their businesses and properties, as well as the destruction of Hindu temples, during the student-led violence that erupted following the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
After unprecedented anti-government protests that peaked on August 5, Hasina resigned as prime minister and fled to India.
“Now, while beating up Awami League cadres, they had beaten up Hindus as there is a perception that Hindus in Bangladesh mean Awami League supporters. I am not saying that what has happened is right, but some people are using it as an excuse to seize property. So, there is no clear distinction between Awami League supporters and Hindus,” he said.
In his first direct contact with New Delhi last month, shortly after becoming the head of Bangladesh's interim government, Yunus conveyed to Prime Minister Modi that Dhaka would prioritise the protection and safety of Hindus and all other minority groups.
During the conversation, Modi reaffirmed India's support for a democratic, stable, peaceful, and progressive Bangladesh and emphasised the importance of ensuring the safety of Hindus and other minority communities in the violence-hit country.
Hindus, who made up 22 per cent of Bangladesh's population at the time of the 1971 Liberation War, now constitute about 8 per cent of 170 million and have predominantly supported the Awami League, known for its secular stance.
Describing the attacks as more political than communal, Yunus questioned the manner in which India is “propagating” them.
“These attacks are political in nature and not communal. And India is propagating these incidents in a big way. We have not said that we can’t do anything; we have said that we are doing everything,” the Chief Adviser said.
Prime Minister Modi, in his Independence Day address from the Red Fort on August 15, expressed hope that the situation in violence-hit Bangladesh would return to normal soon and said 1.4 billion Indians are concerned about the safety of Hindus and minorities in the neighbouring country.
Discussing the future of India-Bangladesh relations, Yunus expressed a desire for good ties with India but insisted that New Delhi must abandon the narrative that Bangladesh will turn into another Afghanistan without Sheikh Hasina at the helm.
“The way forward is for India to come out of the narrative. The narrative is that everybody is Islamist, BNP is Islamist, and everyone else is Islamist and will make this country into Afghanistan. And Bangladesh is in safe hands with Sheikh Hasina at the helm only.
“India is captivated by this narrative. India needs to come out of this narrative. Bangladesh, like any other nation, is just another neighbour,” he said.
The noted economist added, “The issue of trying to portray the conditions of minorities in such a big way is just an excuse.” Yunus said that when he met leaders of the minority community, he urged them to protest as citizens of the country with equal rights and not merely as Hindus.
“Even when I met members of the Hindu community, I had requested them: please don’t identify yourselves as Hindus; rather, you should say you are citizens of this country and you have equal rights. If someone tries to snatch your legal rights as citizens, then there are remedies,” he said.
The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council (BHBCUC), a prominent Hindu minority group in Bangladesh, had also reported attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on August 5.
Thousands of Hindus staged protest rallies in Bangladesh's capital and the northeastern port city of Chattogram on August 10-11, demanding protection amid nationwide vandalism that saw attacks on temples and their homes and businesses.
Earlier in August, the Bangladesh National Hindu Grand Alliance said that the minority Hindu community faced attacks and threats in 278 locations across 48 districts since the fall of the Hasina-led government and termed it as an “assault on the Hindu religion."
