Since the anime's airing, I've also been catching up on the manga of The Apothecary Diaries and I am absolutely smitten with these two. Smitten, I tell you! A low-key simp + high-key romantically-blasé protagonist is the kind of dynamic that will mean we get the whole nine yards of slow-burn development from "antagonists" -> friends -> confidants -> something more? Maomao certainly isn't oblivious to Jinshi's beauty nor his attempts at cringe teasing/flirting with her, even though she has a natural immunity against his shenanigans and remains ever cautious about the whims of people within the palace.
Maomao is also an inspiration as a strong female character who manages to navigate a world that is not kind to people of her class and gender. While it does feel like the story skims through a lot of unspeakable things Maomao had witnessed growing up, to me, it does serve to perfectly emphasize Maomao's "detached" character and her perspective of the world. She is a reluctant protagonist in this story, just trying to survive the best she can given her circumstances. And while she's certainly more educated and street smart compared to other girls in her situation, she's also realistic about her place in the world and knows her own powerlessness, merely finding her own way to co-exist with it and minding her own business (the girl just wants to be left alone with her rare poisons man). Being thrust into palace politics and catching the whims of one Jinshi, however, means inevitably putting herself in dangerous situations. Yet she's also really lucky and very loved and protected by those around her, including those who are in power to effect change, and that is the ultimate power that our Best Girl Maomao wields like a Mary Sue, but a well-written one. Still, her barriers are way up high when it comes to her feelings, and it will take a lot for her walls to come down. It's been 65 chapters into the manga, but the relationship goal post between her and Jinshi feels as if it's moved one step forward and two steps back (*throttles Jinshi with a stale baugette*), but you genuinely do want to root for these two to be more than servant and lord, romantic or otherwise, because their circumstances are a lot more similiar than they are different, as are their complicated feelings about each other. There's also something to be said about this gremlin of a girl who is so desensitized to the world of lust and romance but you know she absolutely owns a PhD in kink studies thanks to her sisters' upbringing. If Jinshi ever learns the extent of her knowledge I think Jinshi.exe will shut down for good and I just want to follow this series and be there for that eventual punchline.

Okay so I think I've had enough time to get my thoughts together, and after watching the new season twice back to back, here are my highlights for each episode (Basically me taking the thoughts I had written down and condensing them) (Do not keep reading if you haven't watched it yet :)) This is going to be a very long post
Chapter 1: Startouched
First of all, still can't get over Aaravos's crying. Pack it up, Santa Claus 🤚
The new Viren intro? Hello? Is he dead? He must be
Was very disappointed to realize that he was, in fact, not dead
Terry is still thriving. We stan him
Rest in peace, Sir Sparklepuff
Claudia was abandoned by her mother and her brother (in her eyes), and now her father, too, whom she sacrificed so much to save.
Her sobs are chilling
Soren is an icon, as usual, he and Opeli are the best duo
"Fellowship of the Pearl" ELROND??
Stella is the number one Rayllum stan
Seriously, why does everyone sleep in full uniform?? Except Rayla. She gets comfort
"What have I done" my poor boy is never going to sleep again
"He took our blankie" LMAOO
Barius could be an award-winning baker in our world
"I'll be fine. I have my blankie." I'm going to live by this phrase
Claudia, PLEASE get some therapy
Chapter 2: Love, War and Mushrooms
Ayo we get a Claudia intro now??? Leave my girl alone
SORUVS CRUMBS LET'S GOOO
"I'm happy to see you, too." Good. Now kiss
Karim's reflection in the crown :( poor Janai
"What am I not seeing?" Corvus, honey. There are weirdly-colored mushrooms. EVERYWHERE.
Not him having to babysit Soren and Hat
"But I will do what I must" Karim stop trying to be Viren
Ezran and Zym being brothers <3
Soren's carrying the entire show with the modern references "Among Us"
"If I ever start to doubt you, I'll know I am truly lost" crying rn
I did not expect Soren to have beef with a mushroom
Hello?? The parallel scene with Janai and Karim's speeches?? I am speechless?? It's beautiful.
Fun sized Zym!
YES JANAYA IS GETTING MARRIED
Each group adopted a baitling and I'm here for it
Chapter 3: The Frozen Ship
AARAVOS FORCED HIM TO USE DARK MAGIC ON THE SHIP???? HE WAS POSSESSED AGAIN???
"Aww, look at that pair, Sneezles and Snoozles" as he's having a traumatic nightmare LMAO
Terry is still waiting for her...
SNEEZLES WHY'D YOU RUIN THE KISS (Very smooth, Callum)
I love Earthblood magic
"Evil black ice" preach, Rayla
They really put the ship monologue in, didn't they 😭
"I mean, you can sit here and draw pictures up the ship, but does that change anything?" hey, shut up <3
Y'know what, forget the plot twists and everything, I wanna know how Claudia's nails stay perfect
Rayla sobbing over a love tragedy while Callum's out in the freezing snow
"Rayla, I'm here!" *door slams in his face*
"Rayla..." *gives a super soft look* "all this time...you were READING?" Writers how dare you
WE GET DAD LORE, EVERYONE. HIS NAME IS DAMIEN. HE WAS A POET. AND HE HAD A BREATHING DISEASE. Maybe the same like Soren? Could he have been saved with Dark Magic????
Callum just share the blanket...YES
Stella the wingman
Callum nO—WHY WOULD YOU TELL HER ABOUT THE DARK MAGIC RIGHT WHEN YOU WERE ABOUT TO KISS?
Claudia is slaying with that new haircut
TERRY WAS COLLECTING THE STICKS TO MAKE HER A LEG HJLEFHKBEFAHKBEF "I did it for you!" kuhewfkhuefw "I would do anything for you." YES
Idk why but the animation during the argument was just *chef's kiss*
"I promise." Hey. No. Stop it.
"I am a humble servant!" How the turns have tabled
Aw, Viren's begging and sobbing on the ground like the pathetic man he is.
"Good. You don't deserve any." LET'S GO, EZRAN
Chapter 4: The Starscraper
I was expecting Callum to just be shot up in the sky like he was walking into a geyser, tbh
but the starscaper is giving minecraft beacons
I was kind of expecting a "BUT it's a living creature and deserves to not be used for parts" but ig we'll settle for a "BUT it's sooo cute"
"Hello, we need help." "Drop." Well alright then
Claudia, yes. Step away from Aaravos. No, he does not deserve your help. nO
"I need to see my dad, he can tell me the right path" Yeah, I don't think she's gonna see her dad again
"How do you all feel about spiders" haha nOPE I'm out
Oh, yay. Sol Regem.
"No" HA
"No horns! But greasy hair..." dang Astrid what did Callum do to you
THE STAFFS. AND VIREN'S SHOULD BE THERE
The novablade was given to a human girl?? The Orphan Queen, mayhaps?? 👀
AARAVOS CAN'T BE KILLED???
Thank you Terry, for saving Claudia from using that vial
ohhh, Soren's about to get severe whiplash
Chapter 5: Moonless Night
Soren's serious and I don't like it
LMAO not Stella trying to steal Callum's book
"Maybe I just want to see you suffer" As you should, Soren
"And I'm so proud of you" "Everything you're telling me is some kind of lie" OUCH
Viren being miserable brings me joy
Not the wet socks :(
Rayla girlbossing as usual
her seeing the good in the ones that everyone else thinks is a monster >>>>
I want to pet Esmeray
Moana who? I only know Rayla
"Luna's love is with you even if she's not" didn't Runaan say something similar to Ethari before he left??
What's the significance of the bells
THE QUASAR DIAMONDS
HE DID IT FOR HER. HE WOULD DO ANYTHING FOR HER. SHE GETS TO SEE HER FAMILY AGAIN
Imagine the first thing you see in your life is the stars...I think I'd transcend, too
THEY'RE SEEING EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST TIME
Kosmo's getting his magical girl transformation
"Your star is...darkness" That wasn't very nice >:(
Lain's face is full of defiance while Tiadrin and Runaan are terrified
Poor Callum
The scene with Viren shouting to Aaravos he can't control him, and then panning to the fly caught in a spiderweb is a nice touch
Chapter 6: Moment of Truth
I'm sorry, what happened to "Hello?" "How are you?" WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S NOT THE REAL PEARL? WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S THE DECOY? WHAT DO YOU MEAN AARAVOS CONTROLLED HIM AGAIN?
The parallels of both Viren and Harrow writing a letter to their son
Lissa is gorgeous
Nooo, writers, stop trying to make me feel sympathy for the rat man
Kpp'Ar?!? Isn't actually a bad guy?
Kosmo you broke Callum
"You might have all the power of the cosmos but you're still dumb" Astrid ily
Did he just?? Hit the restart button? I want that. Give me the power of the cosmos :(
HARROW CAMEO
Callum's stronger than I am cause I would have walked out as soon as she mentioned the spider was going to bite me
"Without magic, you're just a frail old man" who's talking now, Viren
Oh. "I watched it fill with her tears" my hatred of you has increased tenfold, Viren
RAYLA IS HIS TRUTH. HIS LIGHT. THE ONE WHO BRINGS HIM BACK FROM THE DARKNESS
That letter needs to go to Claudia instead of Soren
Stella bringing out the popcorn lmao
THEY KISSED. THIS ISN'T A DRILL, THEY KISSED
"I love you" IOUHEFIUHGIUEGFIUGHEFWIUHEWIO THEY FINALLY SAID IT
Chapter 7: The Red Wedding
The way he caresses her face adiwefiijefjioef
MOON NEXUS. HER PARENTS. RUNAAN.
Not Stella being mean to Sneezles for messing up another Raylum kiss
Ooh, they're getting married! But Karim has to be a little POS and ruin it with an army
Aanya, beloved
Hmm I saw you moving closer to Ezran there
Janaya for life
"Specifically, we tried to kill each other" true love at it's finest
They keep bringing attention to Pharos's wound and I don't like it
Get married, kill your traitorous brother, and eat cake, all in a day's work
THE WAY THEY LOOK AT EACH OTHER they're literally perfect
"Of course I love my sister! I still want to take everything she ever loved from her!" Brother of the year award
So many of my problems could be fixed with an exploding arrow
Ezran didn't reach them in time IS HE GONNA DIE WITH THEM
Wait
LMAO SOL REGEM DITCHED THEM THAT'S HILARIOUS
Oh no he's heading for Katolis oh NO
Chapter 8: We All Fall Down
I am...I have no words for this. (Seriously, I didn't have a lot of notes for this bit. Just seeing Katolis being burned to the ground, the townspeople about to die...the writers were brilliant at letting us feel their horror and fear)
AARAVOS.
Hat survived tho
"Take good care of Hat" you act like you're about to die??
There are a lot of names I'd like to call Aaravos, but I won't say them
"I can't" oh do something for ONCE
"Take my heart." I'm sorry??? No???
Viren. Why is there blood on the knife what did you DO
He carved his own heart. He CARVED his OWN HEART
Soren's alive tho
THE PICTURES OF THE FAMILY JLKBEFJBKLFES
Ladies and gentlemen, Viren is finally dead. And even though I still hate him, his death sequence was top tier
CLAUDIA
Ew, pathetic beast (Sol Regem)
Aaravos, I hope you choke on your own tears <3
Claudia, the tragedy that you are
She lost her father TWICE
Nooo the pearl GET AWAY FROM HER AARAVOS
HE DID ALL OF THIS. ALL OF THIS BECAUSE THE PEARL WAS STILL THERE. HE KNEW SHE WOULD COME BACK FOR HER FATHER. AND HE NEEDED VIREN DEAD TO GIVE HER THAT FINAL PUSH.
I forgot Lujanne had a husband. Or boyfriend. Did she and Allen get married? I don't remember
Thank you for being the ONLY reasonable one here, Terry
Claudia and Callum are after the same spell??
He needed Sol Regem's bones :o
IT ISN'T THE REAL QUASAR DIAMOND?
"Veritas" hello Deltora Quest what are you doing here
HE HAD THE THIRD QUASAR DIAMOND IN HIS STAFF THE WHOLE TIME?? RAYLA HAS TO CHOOSE? WHY CAN'T YOU LET HER BE HAPPY DANGIT
Ooh Claudia's spell didn't work?
Chapter 9: Stardust
"It needs love" That was...not what I expected from you
Leola, cutie. Her and Claudia would have gotten along well
Callum made her a bracelet to bring her back <3
Rayllum!
RUNAAN? it wasn't the behemoth, he's there but he's corrupted? What???
LAIN AND TIADRIN!! And they're...dancing?
Ohhh the key was for a book
They're at peace. Runaan's not. I'm going to die
Leola looks so small standing before them
I love how the cosmic order is just like "oh this is the beginning of chaos" you are quite literally about to kickstart that chaos
The og trio looks so small in the flashback
THE REFLECTION IN THE POND SHOWS LITTLE RAYLA HUGGING HER PARENTS. ILUHEFIUGLEFIUHL
And thus, Leola's Last Wish was born
Oh Santa's back
They put his prison in his daughter's grave 😟
"You taught me to never break my promises!" Hey, so. Can you break the promise you made in Chapter 3?
"No!" Runaan get back here right now.
So Lain and Tiadrin have been dancing this whole time while Runaan's been living in a nightmare. That checks out
Ruthari <3
OOh the Aaravos/Runaan spell is just like the Janai/Karim speech sequence
RUNAAN IS BACK. RUNAAN IS ALIVE
OH NO CALLUM CAUGHT SIGHT OF KATOLIS BURNING
The wedding was supposed to be happy >:(
Aanya got to try her cake tho
Ezran, my poor boy. He was just going away for his aunt's wedding. Nothing was supposed to go wrong. He's still a kid.
Aaravos also gets his magical girl transformation
Hello?? He's literally a giant? Ohhh the "I swallowed her" makes sense now
Terry knows this is a horrible idea. What if Aaravos makes her turn on Terry?????
Is this why is voice is so deep?
Overall, season 6 was a ROLLERCOASTER and probably my new favorite season. There was so much going on, and it did not disappoint. I can't wait to see the next season, AND for those of you who don't know, there has been a mention of a third arc which means possibily 10 seasons instead of 7!!!!! But in order for that to happen we need to show as much support as possible so yeah! If we do get those 3 extra seasons I will never shut up about this series

THE MANDALORIAN SEASON FINALE IS UPON US
I am currently in the train going on a three-day international city trip with my students but if you thought I wouldn't sneak away to watch the episode as soon as it dropped you're dead wrong
Fr I am actually taking a different train so I can watch the episode before joining up with them after an hour
(I should clarify that these are adult students btw lmao, I did not leave a bunch of kids unattended)
Anyway, we know the drill; time for me to scream into the void again
Before we start: Favreau pls I am begging you to make Kalluzeb canon ;-; Or at least show us the hot ex-Imperial and let us fill in the gaps 🥺 I literally don't care how; David Oyelowo's voice acting is so iconic that I would accept his physical differences to animated Kallus in a heartbeat, even if it would ruin all my fic moments in which I have Zeb excessively and in detail simping over Kallus's looks ;-; As long as he has the sideburns though, those are vital ofc
Are they gonna recanonise the original Thrawn books?
MOFF GIDEON WHY DO YOU HAVE SPIKES ON YOUR HELMET??? Are we gonna bring Maul back from the dead yet again? Cause ngl that would be funny as hell
Entering fucking space with a jetpack, that’s badass
HOW IS DIN’S CAPE NOT ON FIRE
GROGU YES
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH WITH YOUR FUCKING DROID SUIT
How did nobody notice Grogu sneaking away btw??? Awful babysitters those Mandalorians
I love how much of a dad Din is. Both too Grogu and to R5
MOUSE DROID MY BELOVED
God fuck I love what they did with the main theme there. Those triplets are everything, and the instrumentation ;-;
I love military action so much, they all shine now
Axe no 😭
I hope they’re actually gonna kill Gideon this time. I’m sick of his face, I don’t wanna sit through another season with him
The ray shields are still fucking rad
Love how Din just collects weapons as he progresses
MOUSE DROID NO
Are we gonna get a Thrawn reveal here? A hologram or whatever?
That cloning room is disturbing
Predictable jump scare and it still got me rippppp
Oh that cave is beautiful ;-; New hope for Mandalore
LIFE WILL FIND A WAY *Jurassic Park theme starts playing*
Yes Armourer you go girllll!!! Now smooch Bo while you’re at it pls
Armour is hot yes yes
ANGRY GROGU MY BELOVED
*Obi-Wan voice* Use the Force, Grogu
Kallus is not gonna show up, is he? 🥺
That energy whip thing is supercool and I want one
AXE YES
Bo girl that scream was FERAL and I am living for it
NO DARKSABER
Huh, that’s an outcome I had not seen coming, but I support it wholeheartedly. Even though the darksaber was cool and Sabine should have gotten it
Bo shielding Grogu I am weeping
The parallel with Kanan no ;-;
YES MANDALORIANS BACK ON MANDALORE
Now please have Sabine return there too
YES YES YES YES YES ADOPT THAT POTATO SACK BABY 😭😭😭😭
Grogu tames the mythosaur ofc ofc
NOW SMOOCH GOD DAMN IT
NEW REPUBLIC BASE!!!
GIMME THE SPACE HUSBANDS
Din sitting on his porch watching Grogu play I love it 😂
God okay this was a good season finale damn
Not me desperately scouring the end credits for Kalluzeb

A Nightingale's Song: A Nice And Not-So-Accurate Season 3
Summary:
“How long are you going to brood today? Because we have about thirty minutes until I gotta close up shop,” A familiar voice pulled him from his thoughts. He hadn’t even noticed the coffee shop owner had sat down at his table. Crowley rolled his eyes from underneath dark lenses. “M’not brooding,” He mumbled, attempting to take a sip of his coffee without wincing at the bad taste it left in his mouth. Nina knew better, especially after having to put up with him for the past six months. She gave him a knowing look. “I’d say all liars go to hell but ya know,” ♡♡♡ Two months after Aziraphale had accepted the Metatron's offer, the Second Coming is finally put into motion. Aziraphale and Crowley must get over their personal issues to do what they do best: Stop Heaven and Hell from destroying Earth.
Prologue: The angels fall and Aziraphale makes a new friend on the Eastern Gate.
Word Count: 2,382
TW: None! I don't think! Let me know if there is though!
Author's Note: Hello! First fic in a year or so! So I am VERYYY rusty 😭 I apologize for that! And first Good Omens fic I've ever written! I'm pretty excited! I hope you like it!!
Also Disclaimer: This fic is just for entertainment purposes! I'm not really trying to predict Season 3 or anything, this is all just for fun!!!
Please enjoy! And if you have any constructive criticism, please let me know! I always aim to write better! Thank you!!
God had once said the days leading to the Sin of Eden had all been nice.
But God lied.
The day the angels had fallen was indeed not nice. Though many were ready for this two-day war to be over, the end was not what they had in mind. It was a sour, bitter victory. They had watched their Lord cast out their once dear friends from their home, the very home they had helped build. The crowds of angels who were just battling their brothers and sisters now stared blankly down from Heaven through the parted clouds. Grief and horror had not existed before that moment, but it was written all over their faces.
God was never thought of as being cruel, at least not in those first few days of the world being made. But it was hard to think of Her as anything else as She made a point to let all those who were left see the Fall. It was like She wanted them to know the cost of disobedience.
The sight of all those who opposed Her dropping from the sky was… well, it was terrifying. If there were humans on Earth -which at this point in time, there weren’t- they would look up at the sky and see one of the most beautiful meteor showers they had ever laid eyes on. But there weren't any people on Earth. Not yet. And what the angels saw was anything but beautiful. They did look like stars falling from the dark blanket of a sky, the last of their grace being stripped away by gravity as it pulled them downward. The soft glow of their holy light was now replaced with a raging fire that outlined their bodies.
The Fall felt slow. Agonizing. Many tried to fly back upward, begging for their Creator to help them like a crying child reaching toward their mother. But God hadn’t even flinched. She watched Her creations tumble downward with no remorse. Their white wings set ablaze with just a blink of Her eyes and from the heavens, they could hear them screaming.
The Fallen’s descent from their old home was broken by boiling pools of sulfur. Thousands of disobedient angels splashed into these pools, and the heat did not comfort their already burning bodies.
They were all sobbing, screaming out to God. God was listening, but She didn’t answer.
The Fallen climbed their way out of the thick liquid, not looking quite the same as they were. Their once clear skin was now riddled with scales or warts or anything deemed unholy. They had features that looked quite similar to the animal prototypes that were still in beta back in Heaven, and the love they had once felt from God Herself was gone. They were left feeling unloved, unholy, and ugly.
They wanted to go back home.
But one Fallen Angel, a little more determined than the others to crawl out of boiling black sulfur pits, made his way to the edge of the bubbling pool. He forced himself up and out, his dark auburn curls matted down with black-like tar. His robes were now darkened, his wings still ablaze. His soft eyes were now sharp and yellow and filled with malice. They were burning and wet, not just from tears but from the chemicals that forced its way through his lids. He didn’t know if he was staring at his maker. But he did know She was listening. He could feel Her listening to all of their suffering. That in itself made him more livid.
“Why,” he screamed to Her. And all the angels who stayed above could hear him clearly over the cries of the damned. One angel was more interested in listening than the others. The fluffy-haired cherub stepped forward to get a better view of the ripped-open earth below where the Fallen had landed.
“You’re punishing us? And for what? You made us like this! You gave us the freedom to ask questions! To choose! Why punish us for how you made us?! Why should we pay for your mistake?!”
The one angel in the crowd cringed, as he looked down through the clouds. It was dawn now and the sun, the very sun that was made by that particular fallen angel, was shining against the Fallen. And the exiled angels were far easier to see now. The fallen angel, glaring at God, had in fact been the angel he saw create gorgeous star systems and beautiful nebulas. He never did catch his name… Not that it matters now. But even so, his heart hurt for him. The cherub whose name is Aziraphale, admired how passionate he had been while cranking up the engine to start the universe. Oh, how his eyes shined brightly, almost mimicking the stars he had just created. But that angel questioned God… He denied Her plan. Even now, he was still asking questions. The very same kind of questions that had led him to be punished. So why did Aziraphale feel so bad for him?
To Aziraphale’s horror, he found himself wondering the same thing. She created them. She gifted them with freedom of choice, but when some angels exercised that freedom, they were punished. What was the point of giving someone the right to choose if they can’t choose? the angel found himself pondering, but then his eyes met with the being that was God, and his thoughts were replaced with terror. She was all-knowing. She could probably hear every single doubt that crossed his mind. He didn’t want to fall… Falling was horrible… It wasn’t too long ago when angels would look to God and feel a warm comfort. She was supposed to be a beacon of hope. But She was radiating anything but. It was clear from the authority on Her face now that She wanted to be feared. And She was feared.
Angels were terrified to even speak, lest they say something that would displease Her. Nobody - not even the mightiest of archangels- dared to speak up.
They all stared at Her in silence… A deep, tense silence.
God decided She was quite finished with the Fallen. She had made her point loud and clear to her children. With the wave of Her hand, God closed the clouds so no one could see the Fallen any longer. The screams had ceased. Well, the screams continued but they just couldn't be heard by the angels anymore. Her head turned to look at all Her remaining soldiers and smiled a sickening, sweet grin. She glanced at the angel who stood next to Her, and he nodded. His white wings spread wide, his voice carrying across what was once a battlefield, “We've already wasted too much time, don't you all think? Let’s get back to work.”
With that, God left them to do Her work. The Metatron, the mouthpiece of God, reminded the angels that She wouldn’t punish them if She hadn’t cared. That she loved all of them dearly. But the word love didn’t feel right. How was what they saw love? But Aziraphale shook his head, eager to be rid of the doubt that began to riddle his mind.
Who were they to question God?
Even if it was clear that Her love was one of her many lies.
♡♡
Aziraphale didn’t feel like he earned his promotion, but when the Supreme Archangel tells you that you’re no longer a cherub but a principality, then you don’t argue. You just nod, and ask what to do next. The past few days had been busy since then. He had been put in charge of God's special little place on Earth that they had settled on calling the Garden of Eden. He was to look after it, protect it from the Fallen Angels, who (according to the Metatron) were to be called demons now. Aziraphale didn't get why, to be honest. Why would the Fallen Angels… or "demons" want to hurt what they helped create. Then again, nothing made sense anymore. Everyone in Heaven used to be so sure of themselves; of their work. But nowadays, since the end of the Great Battle, everyone felt like they were walking on eggshells. As if any minute mistake would cause any of them to join their estranged peers down in Hell.
Aziraphale stood on the Eastern Gate, mindlessly playing with the flaming sword that was given to him. He was told to use said sword if anyone threatened Eden, but if he was being honest with himself, he didn’t know if he would ever use it. Not even on a demon. Even with the stories that Michael was telling the Cherubs about them, how evil they were. No, we wouldn’t dare… even so, he still held onto the sword dutifully, as if he would use it. He turned from the gigantic, beige dunes outside of the walls to look at the luscious, green beauty of God’s newest creation. Eden at the moment, was bountiful with hard-working angels, trying to get everything ready for tomorrow, which was going to be a big day, so they were told. Word upstairs was that God was ready to let loose Her newest invention: humans. This day was the day that all angels have been waiting for since God Herself presented the plan she had for Earth.
His face brightened slightly at the sight of some angels tending to the plants in the garden, laughing amongst themselves as they worked. For the first time in a few days, they seemed relaxed. Like they were Before.
It was nice.
A low hissing noise sounded near his feet. The principality let out an involuntary yelp, jumping back. His white wings spread above as if to make him seem bigger than whatever had startled him. His grip on the hilt of the sword tightened as he looked down at the end of his white robes only to see a long line of black and red scales. The angel’s eyes narrowed as he stepped forward to take a closer look. He was a bit surprised to see the black and red line staring straight back up at him, with gleaming yellow eyes. Aziraphale had seen prototypes back in Heaven of a creature like this, though at the moment the name of such a beast slipped his mind. He glanced down at the group of angels to see if they had heard him, but thank the Lord, they did not. How embarrassing would that be? To be frightened so easily by a creation of God? Aziraphale’s face flushed red, letting out a flustered giggle.
“Oh dear,” He said. “You gave me quite the scare.”He bent down, the bottom of his wings laying gently on the warm, gray stone of the wall behind him. He beamed bashfully at the beast, who was still watching him curiously. “What are you doing up here?” He asked, inquisitively. “I do rather think you’re supposed to be down in the garden with the other animals.” Aziraphale watched the beast as if it was supposed to answer him. “I suppose you’re just being curious. I don’t blame you, truthfully.” The angel stood up straight just to sit down on the edge of the wall, watching the others work once again, his legs dangling over the edge. The beast didn’t move, he still just watched the guardian. It almost carried a nervous energy to it and turned its attention to the flaming sword in his hand. Realization dawns upon the angel's face and without hesitation, he set the sword on his side away from the creature. "Oh no, don't worry, my dear," he whispered sweetly. "You're safe here." Aziraphale's face grew brighter as the beast slithered its way up next to him. It kept its golden eyes fixed on him, cautiously. "I bet all you creatures are very confused with what's going on down there," He told it. "Tomorrow is a big day. A happy one at that! Everything we've worked on… fought for will all be clear tomorrow." The beast gave him a look of doubt. Aziraphale could feel it wash over him, "Well… at least I hope it will be clear." He glanced at it, his lips creasing down on his face but quickly shook it off. "No, no. It will be. God has a plan, and we angels have the easy part. We just follow it." For the first time since it had got here, the beast stared away from the angel and out into the garden. It was thinking. "Well then," Aziraphale sighed, startling the beast out of its thoughts. It let out a small hiss, moving away from the angel as he scrambled up to his feet, snatching up the flaming sword on his way up. Aziraphale didn't pay any mind to the creature, it was obviously just afraid, and though he didn't understand why, he knew better than to pry into its business. Not that he could actually talk to it anyway. The other animals weren't up to conversation, and he assumed that this one wasn't any different. This one was different however in the way it did seem to respond. Maybe not in words but he could feel that it understood him. He'd never come across such a clever creature. "I should return to my duties before Archangel Gabriel catches me lounging around. You see, he doesn’t take kind to being lazy on the job. You should get back with the other animals, my dear." The beast glanced his way and then back at the garden, almost looking a bit hesitant to go in. Aziraphale waved his hands dismissively, "Not that I don't enjoy your company. Because I do! But I'm sure the angels down there will notice you gone, and everything must be in tip-top condition for tomorrow. So off you go!" The beast's forked tongue tested the air before it slipped its way down the stone and into Eden. The Guardian of the Eastern Gate grinned proudly to himself as if to say ‘Good job me! Making sure tomorrow goes as smoothly as possible!’ He now was ready (if not far more ready than before) to continue his duty of making sure no pesky demons make their way into the garden.

Calling out AOT simps.
Hey again, I did this last time with jjk, here's the aot version cause I felt like it, been pretty sick recently and bored out of my mind. This isn't ment to disrespect anyone, everything I say is meant as a joke and not to be taken to heart. I included the characters I already have an opinion on, idk maybe I'll expand the list. Anyways enjoy reading :>
Hange simps: Ok I see y'all, you're valid af, Henge is Hella hot but on a serious note how's your mental health doing? Carrying your friends issues isn't fun, pls take a break, have a cookie and sleep in fuzzy blankets you deserve it. They'd treat you like royalty, I can't roast you, congratulations on your choices. Either just as insanely upbeat as them or very relaxed and you need a person with a very upbeat personality to keep you leveled. 10/10 you're sweethearts and I've never seen an army of simps as hot and with different styles. Casual indie music enjoyer<3
Levi simps: You have attachment issues. There I said it. It's been like what? 9 years since the anime came out and you're still so down bad for this man ever since he baybladed his way into your heart. Most of y'all would drop every anime crush for him, he's top dog for you. Let's face it no one could get him to open up but I don't think you're ready for this conversation. Your family knows about Levi, your friends know about Levi, you're probably never letting him go. For that I'll say you're extremely loyal also you have unrealistic standards in dating. Pretty sure you're great cooks. You have low-key adapted his personality and you're badasses. Also valid 10/10 I think you like chill rnb, idk I can't read y'all.
Mikasa simps: You fell for her cause she's hella strong and gorgeous, she deserves the world and so do you, but for the love of God if I see another word about the unspeakable things you'd do with her menstrural products im coming for your internet connections. I'll skip the obvious need you have for her to beat you up, I love her too I'm down bad for her but I get my daily dose of grass touching, y'all should try it too. I hope you know she hasn't washed her scarf ever since eren gave it to her. 9/10 you need to chill, fucking mappa made us all feral. Dark clothes, You listen to mitski.
Eren simps: Welcome to group therapy, do you want to share something with the circle or shall I go first? :> You have extremely unhealthy habits. No you don't need more caffeine for today, I beg you have a sip of water and some fruit. You don't care if he destroyed everything on earth as long as you got destroyed by him too. You probably read a lot of modern au fics to escape the pain (don't be shy drop your recs in my comments pls, it's a need at this point). If you started the simping campaign in season four you probably simped for Levi before that. You now have a thing for long hair and man buns now. Dog person, alternative look idk I picture y'all with piercings and tattoos. You believe in traumatising people back, who am I to judge? How does it feel to have your entire simp list be villains? If mikasa simps need to touch grass y'all should probably go to a field and start chewing it up, you know what I'm talking about, I won't elaborate. 15/10 if you also simp for his Titan form, bmth enjoyer, if you don't know what music to play you go an Eren Jaeger playlist.
Reiner simps: Who hurt you? I'll just say it, daddy issues. You think you can be a therapist to him, probably give him comfort, you can't I'm sorry. I feel like he'd treat you ok, but please stop going after people who have issues it's not good for you. But I feel you he's so hot and troubled also honkers. You have a thing for big chested anime men, probably also a toji or Nanami simp, dare I say Yami? Can I be honest tho I really like y'all, you're chill and gorgeous with taste, I can ignore the mental health issues too cause this man is something else. 20/10 you give me grunge music vibes.
Armin: Smarty pants, you like control. I low-key think you're a bit crazy in a good way, you seem very calculated but lmao every decision you make is last minute :') you are very well spoken and seemingly calm. He'd treat you great I can't roast you at all, I'm sorry. 10/10 very good choice, let the rest of us burn, dark/light academia aesthetic, I think you get down to some K-pop.
Jean simps: People of culture, you're also cocky like him but not as hot headed. Another man that would give you the world, I also can't roast you, you make better decisions than I ever did in my life. MCU fan. You have a thing for side characters, I think you always like someone other than the MC. You have a thing for hands. 10/10 great street style looks, classic rock enjoyer.
Erwin: Unhealthy, he'd lead you to death just so he could see that basement. He's a crazy bastard, make better choices, you don't deserve to be eaten by titans. You have a thing for authority figures. -100/10 I picture y'all in sundresses and you'd look amazing, you deserve better.

May i Request maybe a Scenario about Ciel And Alois meeting a Modern Person from our world.but instead of telling it freely around the kuroshitsujis manga and anime events, they tell it in riddles and keeps making mysterious refrences of like future events?.. ^^ please have a nice day or night! ^^
of course!! this was so much fun omg
for some reason I was worried I’d struggle with this one, but I breezed right through it!
Ciel and Alois best friends 2k22 they both need more actual friends and I am going to CRY-
anyway this is assuming an AU where the events of the second season went a bit differently, I hope that’s as clear as it can possibly be!
with that said, I’m quite proud of this, sooooo... enjoy <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As it stands, it’s rare for CIEL and ALOIS to be out and about in town with each other for company.
But as with most things, rarities do happen from time to time. The two earls have been put on assignment together for once ― the Queen’s explanation being that she’d like to see whether or not her Guard Dog and her Spider are more efficient if they work as a team. Logic would dictate yes, given how they’re both knees-deep in her dirty work.
So here they are, strolling through London’s streets, accompanied by their butlers and trying quite hard to get along. Despite having their own issues with one another, they’re… managing.
Alois is better at being carefree and forgiving, or at least he’s better at pretending he is. He’s practically attached to the other man’s arm, prattling away about anything and everything. Ciel is only just barely tolerating it because at least Alois isn’t causing trouble. The blonde is being pleasant enough, and to everyone else it looks like two friends out for an afternoon of shopping rather than two of Her Majesty’s pawns being moved round the chessboard.
“Ciel! I think―” Suddenly Alois stops short, yanking his friend’s arm toward a (predictably, Funtom) candy shop. “― We should go get some sweets. My energy is running frightfully low… if I don’t eat something with sugar, I’m going to faint dead away!”
Ciel huffs even as they enter the shop. The small bell on the door announces their presence regardless of the fact that he’d have just as well preferred to go in quietly. “In that case, may I direct you to the salted liquorice candy Funtom’s just begun to dabble in making?”
Despite the joke at his expense, Alois is well aware that’s all it is; a joke. The two of them have rather taken to teasing each other particularly when they’re getting on well. “You’re terrible! Oh, Sebastian, do keep him away from the lemon drops… he’s sour enough for the both of us!”
“And you say I’m terrible? Get your own house in order, Trancy.”
There’s a stranger lingering by the door inside, with a lollipop in their mouth. “He’s got a point, though!” When they speak, it draws both men’s attention, as well as their butlers’. “The toy is called Funtom’s Bitter Rabbit for a reason. You’re one sour little gent, Ciel Phantomhive. A star waiting to fall.”
Whilst Alois has already returned alarmingly quickly with an armful of candy, Ciel’s taking in the stranger with a curious, wary gaze. People have attempted to kill him with less warning than that, after all. “… I beg your pardon ― do I know you?”
The stranger smiles, a kind of enigmatic gesture as they remove the lolly from between their lips. “Beg all you like, but I’ll pardon you without the need for you to get on your knees. You don’t know me; I’m quite familiar with you and Alois, though. It’s a treat to see the two of you together in good spirits.”
Fairly unperturbed, Alois nudges a couple of toffees into Ciel’s hand, to his companion’s undisguised irritation. “What are you, then? A journalist for the gossip rags or something?”
“Of sorts!” they laugh. “I deal in the future of your world, little bluebell. Do you wonder if you’ll escape the spiderweb soon? Into the dark arms of someone better for you, capable of seeing through your eyes?”
“― Uh??” Both the nickname and the claim of their ‘dealing in the future’ strike Alois slightly speechless. His eyes flicker to Claude for half a second. What on Earth is going on here? That’s an awful lot of riddling just to make it clear that they’re aware of both his past and his future. “You’re babbling on about nothing! Who the hell are you, anyway?”
“Call me (Name)! My apologies if I’m boring you. We can’t all have threads weaving in and out and binding us, making us interesting.” Their gaze shifts to Ciel again. “Or stars in our eyes. When do you think Sirius will rise to meet you, little Gemini?”
Ciel’s confusion is more subdued, not nearly as readily shown as Alois’. If (Name)’s assertion of dealing in the future isn’t just a clever parlor trick, they’re only allowing the two earls a peek at their hand. They’re not outright showing it. And if that’s the case, he’s not going to show his cards, either. “They’re just a second-rate fortune teller trying to swindle us, Alois. Don’t pay them any mind.”
(Name) tilts their head in what appears to be faux curiosity. “How badly you think of me, Ciel. I haven’t asked you for a penny. I know you’d prefer not to give that much, anyway ― in for a penny, in for a pound, as they say.”
Before either of the earls can breathe another word, Sebastian steps in front of his master. His smile is perfect and polished as always, but under it lurks the unmistakable threat of a butler ready to protect his lord. “It’s my turn to offer apologies, (Lord/Lady) (Name). My young master has business to attend to, so we must take our leave now.”
“Ah? That’s right, of course! Please forgive me.” Their plea doesn’t seem to be genuine, however. Their smile mirrors Sebastian’s own. “Fly back to your master’s shoulder, my dear raven. You needn’t worry about me.”
With that, they push themself away from the wall where they’ve been leaning, and they sweep into a bow directed at both earls. “You need only look me up should you want to speak, but I do believe our paths will cross again aside from that. Enjoy your afternoon, my lords.”
The door is propped open before (Name) throws one final look over their shoulder toward Ciel and Alois. “Do watch out for laughs among the dead, though, won’t you? You two pull so many strings in this city… be careful you’re pulling the right ones.”
And they’re gone, all but vanishing into the crowds outside the door.
The group is silent for a moment as they all try to process what’s just happened. At last, Alois pipes up. “Claude, is it just me, or was that encounter quite strange?”
Gold eyes barely move, locked on the memory of where (Name) just disappeared. “Quite, Your Highness.”
“Agreed,” Sebastian speaks up, with his eyes darting toward where the other demon is looking. “It was most certainly not just you, Lord Trancy.”
“Of course it wasn’t.” Ciel taps his cane on the floor, perhaps with a bit more force than is necessary. “But we’ll worry about them later. Alois, go pay for the sweets so we can get out of here. We’ve got other matters to worry about first.”
The sooner they can deal with the case Her Majesty put them on… the sooner they can look into this (Name).
Curiouser, curiouser, curiouser.

spending summer with you
Genre: fluff
A Miya, cherry and Joe x reader
Synopsis: summer is here! What activities do the boys want to do with you?
a/n: yes, yes, yes! I am writing this instead of studying. I just finished sk8 and I wanted to write something for cherry but I decided to settle on this because I love the other guys too! It's also official! I am opening requests for sk8 so spam my inbox if you please! Let's get started!
Miya chinen
Tumblr media
During the summer, he wouldn't really skate in the sun if he didn't have to practice.
So you guys would spend most of your free time indoors.
He does own a switch so you guys would just play games all day.
If you have a switch on your own, you guys would play fighting games together.
smash bros is his favorite because he can abuse kirby.
He doesn't really like calm games like animal crossing but with a bit of begging, puppy eyes, and kisses, he'll get it so he can play with you.
"there's nothing to do on here." Miya grumbled as he ran around his empty island out of boredom.
"think of it like you have to grind to the next level, Miya. Grab materials and I'll help you make your island pretty." you replied nonchalantly while you fished on your own island.
Of course, he also has a pc. He plays genshin on there.
If you got to force him to play animal crossing, he's gonna force you to play genshin impact.
"the cube is chasing me!" you yelled, trying to run out the electro hypostasis to no avail.
Miya's character stayed outside the arena. He was afk because he was laughing so hard he couldn't move.
Yeah, he can be an asshole. But he's your asshole 💖
Cherry | kaoru sakurayashiki
Tumblr media
Bestie, he's a workaholic. Good luck with getting him out in the summer.
He has more work than usual so you instead ask him to teach you how to do calligraphy as a "hobby" of sorts.
You'll ask him to critique your work. You try to perfect your writing the whole summer.
Once kaoru finally approves that your work is up to par, you would do your best and try to match his style so you can take up at least half of his commissions for him.
He doesn't know if he should be touched or annoyed.
He just woke up in the middle of the night to see you in the shared living room surrounded by papers and finished commissions that were addressed for him to do.
Kaoru thought for a moment. This was a touching moment rather than an annoying one.
"you didn't have to do this. I could've handled it." he muttered guiltily after he brought your half-asleep figure to bed, his hands resting on your waist. He pulled your face to his chest.
"yeah but I want to spend time with you. And if I have to work to get you some free time, I'll gladly do it." you sleepily said, snuggling into the pink-haired man's chest and falling asleep once more.
He was thankful you fallen asleep otherwise, you would've seen the bright red blush that dusted his cheeks.
This became a tradition for you every summer.
You guys would work together to finish all of his summer commissions so you could spend more time doing other fun things.
But you got to admit that doing things together, whether it was work-related or otherwise, was really enjoyable for the pair of you.
It didn't matter what you were doing because as long as you get to spend time with one another, you'll be satisfied.
Joe | kojiro nanjo
Tumblr media
This boy will try to woo you with his skating.
But like he does that any season he gets so you want to try something different this summer.
So he suggested that you take the part-time job opened at the italian restaurant he was working at.
Might not sound fun but hear me out.
Kojiro usually closes the shop so you guys would stay at the restaurant extra late to cook and experiment with new dishes.
"no, we are not boiling the pasta in watered-down tomato sauce."
"but what if it turns out tasty?" kojiro said with a smirk, standing over the stove as he dropped the pasta in normal boiling water with a pout.
Yeah, he still does it anyway.
When you wouldn't eat it, he decided to try it.
More or less, you were right. It tasted bad.
Just get him his favorite snacks and he'll perk right up.
Another thing he likes to do is to annoy kaoru. He always wants you to join along.
You were a good sport so you joined in the festivities.
Needless to say, the pink-haired male despised you.
At least his green-haired best friend loved you.
Tumblr media
Cherry's got a little out of hand but it was managed hehe! Requests are open so please don't be shy to leave any requests in my inbox below! Love you guys

If you want you can check out part one here and my other mob fic here! Cheers!
Botanical Interest Masterlist I Main Masterlist
______________________________ 6pm was fast approaching as you began to close up shop for the day. Steve was here to pick you up for dinner and much to your embarrassment walked in on you having a very difficult conversation argument with a very difficult customer over pricing and promotion. Having run your small business on your own for years you knew how to hold your own but you completely froze when you saw Steve enter the shop out of the corner of your eye.
“I- listen Mr. Andersen, I appreciate all the business that your venues have given me but I can’t afford a raise in advertising prices right now. I’ve been reliable and trustworthy and I’ve always treated your venues with respect. I’ve never been an issue for you, please don’t raise the rate. Wedding season is coming up and I need the exposure.”
You tried to bargain with him quietly, hoping the music overhead would prevent Steve from hearing but it was a low volume and a small shop. You’ve only been dating for a couple months. You didn’t want to embarrass yourself in front of him, especially not at work.
Mr. Andersen exhaled sharply. You could tell he was annoyed at you for the pushback. “Look, I’m sorry but we can’t be making exceptions every time a business owner comes groveling.”
Tears stung your eyes, you really did generate a lot of business through Andersen’s venues. They listed you as one of their recommended vendors to their clients, it’s been huge for you. Knowing that Steve was there made this even worse. “If I’d have known you were going to cry like this I would’ve just done it over email I mean really-”
“That’s enough.” Steve cut him off before he could humiliate you any further. He sent a quick text and shoved his phone back in his pocket before pulling himself to his gull height and squaring his shoulders. “You’ve done enough, now get out.”
A scoff from Andersen and a harsh glare directed towards you and he was on his way out of the building. Steve’s phone vibrated but he didn’t check it. Instead he walked over to you and extended his arm to rub your back.
“Are you okay? That guy was a total fucking prick to you, you don’t deserve that.” Steve consoled you. He seemed calmer than you expected for having just witnessed something like that. You’ve seen him agitated but never upset. Maybe he was restraining himself for you but it didn’t matter, you appreciate him being there for you.
“I’m fine, I just need to finish closing up shop and we can get to dinner. Just give me a minute” you said as you began to sweep up.
“Alright, sweetheart. I’m double parked so I’m gonna go to the car and try to find a space.” You nodded as hummed along to the music.
____________________________
As Steve left the shop he pulled his phone out and checked his text from Thor ‘we got him’. When Steve heard that man talk to you like that he knew you didn’t want him to threaten Andersen and make the situation worse. You were already on the verge of tears so he decided to ask one of his men to hold Andersen out back where he could have a few words with him.
Stepping around the corner into the alley behind your shop he took off his jacket and rolled up his sleeves. He needed to be quick so you wouldn’t find out. He didn’t want to upset you further, he just wanted this guy to know that you can’t treat his girl like that. And maybe he could be talked into giving her the advertising for free.
“So you think you can talk to my girl like that huh?” He questioned. Andersen looked like Thor had already punched him once in the process of restraining him. Thor’s hold on Andersen’s arms tightened.
Andersen was scared, but not scared enough to Steve’s liking. Before Andersen had the opportunity to answer Steve cocked his fist back and launched it directly to Andersen’s jaw. “Shit! I’m sorry, I didn’t know. We’re expanding and we need the money so I have to raise-”
Before the excuse could be finished Steve hit him again. “Stop! Please!” Andersen begged.
Steve chuckled. “No I don’t think I will. I can’t just let people go every time they grovel to me. They’d never learn.” Another punch landed.
“You’re not gonna raise your prices for her. In fact, you’re gonna call her up in a couple days and apologize by offering her advertising free of charge for all of your venues. Do you understand?” Steve asked coolly.
Andersen coughed up some blood. “I- I can offer her half price but I can’t just waive the cost like that!”
“Not good enough.” Steve punched him even harder, Andersen was nearly knocked out. Steve thought about the tears that slipped from his girl’s eye and couldn’t stop himself. He struck Andersen one more time with a growl and his head hung limp between his shoulders. Just then he heard the sound of shattering glass behind him and froze, hand still in a fist.
_____________________________________
Finally done with most of your tasks all you had to do was take out the garbage and empty the vase of leftover stems from bouquets into the dumpster. You opened the back door just in time to see Steve land a brutal punch to Mr. Andersen’s cheekbone. Mr. Andersen’s head fell and it was clear he had been knocked out cold.
You hadn’t even realized you’d dropped the vase until you felt the shards fall around your feet. You couldn’t look away when Steve looked up at you with wild eyes, you’d never seen him so angry. You felt the way you did the day you met him. Nervous and frozen in place.
His face instantly fell and through his heavy breathing said “Oh, honey, you weren’t supposed to see that.” He was trying to relax his features as he approached you but you could only take steps back and into the shop like a scared animal being cornered.
Your heart was hammering in your chest and you couldn’t tell if you were more angry or scared. You held your hands out in front of you and stammered “I’d better.. I need to lock up shop I’ll um, I’ll go”. “Sweetheart wait!” Too late. You shut the back door and locked it behind you.
You went to your back office and sat down, not even sure where to go from here with this. You two had talked about his work a bit, it wasn’t like it could be avoided forever, you just didn’t think he’d bring it into yours. You weren’t scared of Steve doing something like that to you, you were scared of that look in his eyes. His capability of doing something like that with little thought.
Oh, God, what does this mean for the shop? Mr. Andersen will have you blacklisted. He’ll tell every wedding planner in Brooklyn. Now your heart was hammering for a whole other set of reasons. Too busy spiraling as you thought about it all you didn’t hear the bell of the front door ring.
A knock on your open office door pulled you out of it and you looked up to find Steve. He wore what looked like a truly regretful expression on his face. You fought the urge to yell at him. You’re an adult, you’re going to talk about this like adults. Let him say his piece.
He had straightened up, his hands were clean and his jacket was back on. He gave a heavy sigh. “Sweetheart, I don’t even know where to begin. I’m sorry you had to see that side of me, but I want you to know I would never ever do anything like that to you or anyone close to you. I only want what’s best for you.”
“And that’s punching one of my main sources of income?” You snapped. You appreciated the apology but you were getting too worked up in anger thinking about the future of the shop.
He was a little miffed at the outburst and became defensive. “That man disrespected you, disrespected your work. No one talks like that to my girl. That’s how we settle things in my world!”
“Well you’re not in your mob world right now you’re in mine! And things don’t get handled like that! Do you have any idea the toll that could take on my business? He’s gonna have me blacklisted by the end of the day if he wakes up.” The last words came out a bit broken as you felt more tears build. You were more worried about the business than anything.
Steve walked around the desk to console you just like he had not twenty minutes ago. He gently put a hand on your forearm. “You’re right. It’s not my world, it wasn’t my call to make and I had no right to react like that. I didn’t even think about that. The way he was talking to you, I just.. I got so mad. You work so hard and you don’t deserve that. Sometimes I forget there’s more than one way to handle things.”
Okay, that went better than expected. This is what made Steve so interesting to you. Steve was funny and sweet and charming as hell, but beyond all that there was this tender heart. He was dangerous but he was also fiercely loyal. He was more than a mobster and he was better than the brute force he used. It’s why you were able to accept that part of him, because it wasn’t his entire life, it didn’t consume him.
“Thank you for saying that,” You said quietly. You looked up to him and could tell that he really did feel bad. “I accept your apology and I appreciate it. But you have to make things right with Mr. Andersen. I’ll pay the new rate but you have to apologize before it’s too late.”
_________________________
Steve was beginning to harbor resentment towards himself for fucking this up for you. Andersen just made him see red, he has such a hard time shutting that part of himself down. You work so hard and care so much there’s just no way he could let that stand. He just hoped to work through it and move on. He really didn’t wanna screw it up.
Steve was much more at ease knowing you accepted his apology. “I won’t like it but I can do that. It’s only fair. Can I make it up to you over dinner? We’ll make a quick stop to the hospital to set things straight with Andersen.” When you shut the door in his face in the alley he had Thor take him to the hospital. He’d call another town car to get home.
He’ll apologize to Andersen and pay the hospital bill, but you’re not paying the increased rate. No way. Steve will pay him off enough that he won’t be telling anyone about the altercation, either. Win-win in his eyes.
You leaned your head against his shoulder in slight exhaustion and nodded. “Can we forget the reservation? I really want breakfast food right now.”
A soft chuckle escaped his lips. “Of course sweetheart, you wanna get takeout and go back to mine?” He felt you nod. “Yes, please”.
“Let me just order a car and we’ll be on our way. I’m sorry again, sweetheart, I promise I’m gonna make it right even if that guy’s a douche.” You laughed a little bit and wiped the few tears that stayed in your eyes.
“So.... your girl, huh? Is that like some mob slang term I don’t know about? Are we official?”
A smile graced his lips. “I’d like to be, if you would.”
You smiled back at him. “I might be persuaded with waffles.”

Red Moon Drabble Series - Part 14
Summary: Seungmin wants to try something new. Hana is more than willing to oblige.
Warnings: Smut, very detailed cunnilingus, face sitting, unprotected sex
Kinktober Prompts: I’m doing two in one for this one: face sitting and creampie.
A/N: Surprise! This one takes place somewhere between the end of Red Moon and the Epilogue. Before Hana and Chan decide to have pups. It’s also going to serve as Day 1 of Kinktober! Yes, I am deciding to partake in Kinktober this year. We’ll see how much I can get through. Not all of my Kinktober stories will be related to Red Moon, but some of them will. I will be making a second masterlist for Kinktober, but the Red Moon related ones will also be on the Red Moon Masterlist.
This one doesn’t necessarily need a deep understanding of the original story.

“I want you to sit on my face.”
Hana looks up in shock at Seungmin, pausing in her efforts to fold her laundry. “Sorry?”
“I want you to sit on my face.” He repeats, leaning against the doorframe nonchalantly.
“Right now?”
A grin pulls at the side of his lips. “No. I just want to try it eventually.” He shrugs. “Minho was talking about it and I want to try.”
“Oh, uh, yeah. Okay.” Hana shifts slightly. “Sure. Yeah.” She shifts again, trying to ignore how wet she’s getting. “We can do that.”
“Come to my room tonight.” He says, the side of his lips lifting again, this time in a smirk.
He leaves her there with that, Hana mouthing a “fuck” before attempting to go back to folding the laundry unsuccessfully. She’s desperately trying to ignore the dampness in her panties from the mental image of Seungmin’s plump lips on her, hands holding her hips as she grinds on his face.
“Shit.” She breathes, running a hand through her hair. That boy was going to be the death of her.

Hana climbs the stairs slowly. Her panties are still damp, something that had lasted all day. She knew the others noticed, catching her scent, but none of them had acted on it as usual, not even breathing a word about it to tease her. No doubt Seungmin had staked his claim on her for the night, the others keeping their distance out of respect. It was something that had developed between them, a sort of understanding. If someone wanted her, just a simple message to the others and they would back off. Some days, however, it was open season. Whomever got their hands on her first. Sometimes more than one of them. Sometimes it was her choice. There was never any jealousy, never any fights about it. They all knew they would get their turns.
His door is cracked, the lamp on leaving the room painted in soft orange light. She doesn't bother knocking, pushing the door open enough for her to squeeze through before shutting it with a soft click behind her. Seungmin is laid out on his bed, laying back against the pillows. He’s stripped to nothing but a pair of shorts, judging by the bulge beneath them he’s just as excited as she is.
He lifts his hand, motioning her over with a crooked finger. She’s in nothing but a baggy shirt and panties, her thighs damp from the wetness of her underwear. This was her beta. She was his luna. She was above him in rank, but standing in his room she felt every bit the omega she was. He was in control.
“Strip.” He says as she reaches the end of his bed.
She’s quick to pull the shirt over her head, letting her panties drop to her feet. He watches her with hooded eyes, holding a hand out to her. She climbs on the bed, letting him guide her closer.
“Sit on my face.” He instructs, running a hand up her thigh.
She does as she’s told, moving closer to his head, swinging a leg over so she’s straddling his face. He hums as he takes her in, thumb running through her folds.
“So wet for me.” He nips at her inner thigh.
“I’ve been thinking about this all day. Since you asked me.”
“I know.” He nips higher up her thigh. “You were driving the boys crazy. Really testing their restraint.”
“Fuck.” She breathes, legs shaking already and he hasn’t even touched her. “I couldn’t stop thinking about your mouth.”
He hums, pulling away from her slightly. “You want me to eat your pussy?”
She whines at his words, trying to press her hips closer to his face but he holds her still. “Fuck, please.”
“I guess I can’t say no to that.” He says, pulling her down so she’s fully seated on his face.
Hana gasps as his mouth meets her pussy, his tongue running through her folds to taste her. His hands hold her still, preventing her from moving. She grips his headboard as he circles her clit with his tongue, holding herself up as he teases her. All of her packmates were good with their mouths, all very capable of drawing orgasm after orgasm from her simply with their head between her thighs. But Seungmin was among the best at it, attentive to what made her crazy, what could draw her closest to her orgasm. He had all the restraint of a beta, his favorite thing to do was edge her over and over until she nearly goes blind from the intensity of her orgasm when he finally let her cum.
She can tell he’s gearing up for another of those kinds of nights, his movements slow and deliberate as he mouths at her pussy. She had never tried this before with any of the others, most of them preferring her on her back. But this was entirely different, Seungmin’s hands on her ass as he moves her against his mouth.
“Why have we never done this before?” She gasps, knuckles white where they grip the headboard.
Seungmin’s answer is nothing more than a grunt as he pulls her down completely against his face, nose bumping her clit as he fucks her with his tongue.
“Oh god, Minnie. Right there.” She moans, grinding her hips against his face.
He lets her, loosening his hold on her so she can move. His teeth scrape against her clit, her legs shaking as she gets close.
“So close.” She whines. “I’m gonna cum.”
He takes control again, lifting her away from his mouth before she can cum. She lets out a whine, bending so she can look down at him. His eyes are dark, the lower half of his face shining with her juices. She moans at the sight of him forgiving him for a moment for taking away her orgasm.
“You don’t get to cum until I decide.” He says, thumb rubbing tight circles into her clit. Her legs are already shaking again as she moans in response.
He settles her over his mouth again, fucking her slowly with his tongue. She holds herself still, fighting the urge to play with her nipples. They were super sensitive now, the boys loving it when she came from just her nipples being played with. The omegas especially loved it when she would lay between them, let them suckle.
She’s getting close again to her orgasm, but she knows Seungmin won’t let her be satisfied yet. She wasn’t whiny enough, wasn’t begging him yet.
“Fuck.” She groans as he pulls her away again, this time pushing her over onto her back, her head hanging off the end of his bed.
“I want to be inside you when you cum.” He says, pushing his shorts down, not even bothering to kick them all the way off.
He thrusts into her, sliding in easily from her wetness. She can see the wetness on his face, feel it as his mouth closes over her nipple. She whines, gripping his shoulders as he fucks her, his hands holding the end of the bed the only thing keeping her from sliding off. She loves this side of him, the unhinged animal as he chases his own high.
“Please, Minnie.” She whines, nails digging into his shoulders. “Please. I wanna cum.”
“You wanna cum?” He asks, lifting himself to hit a deeper spot inside her.
“Please!” She cries, head falling back over the edge of the bed. “Please!”
His fingers find her clit, rubbing circles over it. “Then cum.”
She cries out his name as she cums, back arching as her orgasm finally rips through her. He’s quick to follow, spilling into her. They both still as the revel in their highs, Seungmin holding her head up as his lips trails up to hers. She can still taste herself on his lips, moaning quietly against them as he kisses her.
“We should do that more often.” She breathes, letting herself go boneless in his hold.
Seungmin smirks as he picks up the quiet moaning from the other side of the wall. “I think you’re gonna have a few in line to try it next.”
Hana hums, pulling Seungmin down closer. “I don’t think I can complain.”
He groans as she clenches around him. “Round two?”
She smirks. “Those boys deserve an easy finish. They have a lot of work ahead of them. Might as well help them now.”

Part 1 - Basic Concepts of Miraculous Ladybug: Miraculous Jewels
Alright! I promised you meta and now I deliver!
I feel like people mostly watch Miraculous for the romance these days. Shipping is all everyone cares about. I wonder why? Probably because writers themselves don't take their worldbuilding very seriously and because they don't put much effort into making the audience care about something other than Love Square, like the mythology behind the Miraculous, or motivations of the main villain, or some pretty heavy topics for a kid's show that they bring up and then refuse to touch again. You know, all the good things. And this is coming from someone who is a passionate multishipper. I have lived through several shipping wars in different fandoms and came out victorious after all.
I am probably the only person out there who cares about the big picture, the overall storyline and the worldbuilding of Miraculous in addition to all details and implications that could develop into fascinating plotlines relevant to the main story. It is a rather lonely fandom experience, I must confess. But, hey? Who cares? I am here to have fun and bring to the table discussions no one wants to have.
So, let's talk about the basics.
If you, as the writing team, are capable of keeping only 1 thing consistent, then please, I beg you, let it be the basic concepts of your universe. Because in this case, one has to actively put effort into writing characters and conflict resolutions badly. And also because nothing can save bad worldbuilding.
I don't have high worldbuilding standards for Miraculous. They certainly aren't as high as the ones I had for Legend of Korra (which was a badly written trainwreck, that ATLA doesn't deserve as a sequel) or the ones I currently have for Dragon Prince. Therefore I won't be too harsh in my criticisms. Granted, I think that Miraculous has better worldbuilding and lore consistency than Winx Club for example (I haven't seen the reboot yet, so writers might have fixed their worldbuilding at least a little bit). Even though I enjoyed Winx when I was younger and some elements of this story still attract me.
Both serialised and episodic shows as well as movies to the lesser extent must have some flexibility in worldbuilding and plot because you can never be 100% sure where your story is going. Maybe, you'll get money for more seasons, maybe not. However, you must never lose sight of your basic concepts. They have to stay the same no matter what, because rewriting lore and retconning major developments every new season is not and never will be called good writing.
Forgive me for using architectural metaphors, but you need a solid foundation to build any kind of structure. Otherwise, everything falls apart.
I like to apply this logic to writing as well. When designing a world where your story takes place, you must lay a few ground rules. It's especially important if you have a magic system. What kind of ideas absolutely must exist? What kind of conclusion do you want your story to have? Does your magic system has limitations? Where is the grey area? Could you introduce new elements later on?
And I feel like the writing team of Miraculous Ladybug did not ask these questions. This may feel like I am nit-picking canon material and looking for problems that simply aren't there, but I promise that I am not. You see, things that I am about to point out only seem small at first glance. But these details are actually the source of the largest plotholes in the series. And their presence negatively affects character development, conflicts and resolutions of said conflicts.
That doesn't mean that I have nothing good to say about the magic system of the show and its elements. There are a lot of great ideas and concepts. And some of them have the potential to contribute to the delightful story.
Let's dive right into it, shall we?
Tumblr media
Camouflage
I have to give credit where it's due because the idea of camouflage and shapeshifting for Miraculouses is brilliant. It seems like Miraculous can't fundamentally change its type of jewellery or accessory. The ring will always be the ring but with a different ornament, colour or shape. This is true most of the time (Monkey Miraculous is an exception since it transformed into earplugs/headphones/headband/circlet) It makes sense and avoids plotholes. Grimoire doesn't have the pictures of each Miraculous in disguise for identity protection. That was very neat too. I have no comments. This concept was very good.
Also, since Marinette wore a nose ring of the Ox in "Kwamibuster" without any problem and Adrien wore Ladybug's earrings in "Reflekdoll", we can assume that you don't need to have piercings to wear a Miraculous. Miraculous just magically passes through your skin.
I'm interested to know the following. Can Kwamis recognise a camouflaged Miraculous on a person? Can the holder order them to confess the identity of this person? This shouldn't be possible for identity protection just like with Kwamis sensing each other. But more on that in later posts.
Power Levels
For a long time, we assume that there are only 7 Miraculouses. Turtle belongs to Master Fu, Gabriel has Butterfly and Peacock, Marinette and Adrien have Ladybug and Black Cat. Everything is pretty straightforward. Then it's revealed that there are more jewels and more boxes. It makes the worldbuilding interesting, but it also majorly complicates things, making them inconsistent.
Their position in the Miracle Box implies their power levels. Creation and destruction are the most powerful forces in existence, therefore they are at the top. Moreover, it makes this Box the most important, the most powerful out of all others. Su Han in "Furious Fu" calls it "Mother Miracle Box". Fox, Turtle, Bee, Butterfly and Peacock have less power than the main pair, but more than the Miraculous of the lower Zodiac tier (since they correspond with animals of the Chinese Zodiac).
1. Ladybug can create anything out of nothing (Lucky Charm, which gives what you need the most at the moment). This Miraculous can resurrect the dead, reverse the effects of the Cataclysm. The power of Miraculous Cure or Miraculous Ladybug can work in several ways:
it simply repairs the damage (puts stuff back together, heals injuries and so on)
it reverses time for the matter, restoring things back to the state they were before the destruction occurred (however, the Cure doesn't erase people's memories of everything that happened unless they were mind-controlled, frozen in place or transformed by Akuma into something else - this is an important point that I'll discuss some other time)
How does Miraculous Cure work when there are no supervillians? In NY Special Marinette just says this.
Tumblr media
Excuse me, what? What was that? You can't do anything when the villain is gone? What the hell?
*insert here every scene where Ladybug fixed Paris after destroying akumatized/amokized object (this action causes the Akuma victim to detransform/sentimonster to disappear - villain is gone) and purifying butterfly and feather*
It was such cheap angst. I couldn't even be upset when Adrien gave up his Miraculous, because that whole situation is just stupid. But, never mind. We aren't talking about that today.
Apparently, Lucky Charm and Miraculous Cure only work when summoned to battle a specific villain. What is the point then? Huh? You can't tell me that Ladybug has the power of unlimited creation and then say that she can't repair the damage without a special Lucky Charm that was magically synchronised with specific big bad of the week.
Ladybug also can purify Akumas. It makes sense for Ladybug to have the ability to reverse the magic of less powerful Miraculous. But this power can't be applied universally. How does this power of reversal apply to different situations where there is no evil Butterfly holder? Can Ladybug reverse the magic of any Miraculous?
The unlimited power of creation introduced in season 4 ("Mr. Pidgeon 72") is another fascinating thing. On one hand, it's logical and proves the status of this Miraculous as the most powerful. On the other hand, by introducing this power, you have created a plothole. Look, Marinette can create the charm which repels Akumas. If Ladybug can create anything then what stops her from creating a tool for finding Hawkmoth (like special glasses for discovering identities or a compass)? I mean, the show says that the power of creation is unlimited, it means that the creation of such tool is possible.
2. Black Cat can destroy anything with Cataclysm, even other Miraculous. He can kill living things and turn them into ash, but not himself. This Miraculous is supposed to have other special abilities that we don't see. And they should be equal to powers of Ladybug, both in number and in potency. Unfortunately, after 3 seasons writers didn't give us anything. It makes laughable the idea of balance between Ladybug and Black Cat.
Now, to the second tier. These Miraculouses have a singular ability, but they need a second one to keep the power balanced between Zodiac and the main pair.
3. Butterfly creates champions with different superpowers. But how does the time limit of children work for Butterfly? In theory, the countdown should start right after the creation of the Akuma since for Ladybug and Chat Noir countdown starts after activation of their powers even if they don't use them. However, if the countdown of the Butterfly begins after Akuma creation then there's no point because the holder has to stay transformed to guide their champion. The charged butterfly won't have time to even grant powers before the transformation of the child-holder drops. This issue is never explored because Gabriel doesn't have a time limit. However, I feel like it should be addressed in flashbacks of past Butterfly holders for example.
This Miraculous should be less powerful than Ladybug and Black Cat. It's often not. Some Akumas are too overpowered. Stormy Weather can move the Earth away from the Sun, Timetagger can send people through time and jump through time as well, Chat Blanc destroyed the world with a single energy blast, Miraculer could steal powers of those more powerful than her by default. These are the most notable examples. One could argue that Chat Blanc was a different case. Hawkmoth simply gave the most powerful Miraculous a boost. However, we know that even without a holder (the wildest and the most powerful form of uncontrolled Miraculous magic) Plagg's Cataclysm can't destroy the universe just like that (he presumably wiped out dinosaurs and sunk Atlantis on his own without a holder). I think that the less powerful Miraculous (Butterfly) shouldn't be able to increase the power of destruction to such a degree and give Black Cat the power to destroy celestial bodies and galaxies.
Writers want us to see Hawkmoth as the formidable villain. But it's not easy because he is less powerful than your main heroes by default of your worldbuilding. Sometimes writers make the Butterfly more powerful than creation and destruction to raise the stakes, breaking the laws of their magic system. So, how do you solve this? Let Ladybug and Black Cat keep their status as the most powerful and instead of giving Hawkmoth more magical power, make him smarter, more cunning, inventive. Gabriel is a fashion designer, whose creativity makes him a very good Butterfly holder. He has a life full of experience, he knows much more about things than the main teenage characters. Catalyst was very interesting for this very reason. Gabriel sort of discovered a cheat code to boost his powers. Show us how he experiments with his powers, how he analyses his past Akumas and tries to find the most effective ones. Maybe Gabriel tries to design Akumas that can specifically neutralise Ladybug and Chat Noir. This exploration could also give writers an opportunity to explain how the powers of Butterfly work. Can he control the type of powers he grants? Can he control the appearance of Akumas? There are many things to be explored.
4. Peacock creates sentimonsters. I remember that fans were very disappointed when the power of the Peacock was revealed at the end of season 2. I was one of them. The concept of Amoks is far too similar to akumatized butterflies. Other Miraculouses have unique abilities and keywords for their powers, while Peacock just looks like Butterfly 2.0. That glowing mask effect just adds insult to injury.
You have to start by figuring out the powers of the Peacock in a normal situation. If a holder is a good person, then how does their power work? For example, make them related to sight (because of the "eye" pattern on feathers). Maybe, Peacock grants the ability to see the several possibilities of the future, but only a few minutes ahead. Maybe, this Miraculous gives you the ability to see through someone's eyes for a few minutes (and the victim is completely unaware of the intrusion). Perhaps, Peacock allows the holder to use feathers (or tiny peacocks) as cameras one at a time and be all-seeing. These feather-spies can be destroyed by the holder or disappear on their own after some time. Such power could be devastating when used against heroes in canon.
5. Bee can paralyze. This power is pretty straightforward. Once I read a fanfiction focused on very vell done Chloe Redemption, where she fights alongside Ladybug and Chat Noir. Eventually, she grows and becomes a better person. This fic ends with an Akuma battle, where LB and CN are trapped and Akuma is ready to kill them. But Chloe uses a second power of the Bee on the villain - Miraculous Stinger. It's deadly both for the holder and for the victim (because bees die when they sting someone). Chloe kills the Akuma with a Stinger before it can get LB and CN, but she too dies making the ultimate irreversible sacrifice. I will add a link if I find it again.
6. Turtle can create a shield. I don't have much to say on this either. It feels underpowered compared to others in the second tier. Maybe Turtle can also slow down opponents (because turtles aren't the fasters animals out there).
7. Fox creates illusions and acts as their puppeteer. In order to create a balance between other powers, these illusions must hold for as long as the holder needs them to. I propose this mostly because we see that Venom of the Bee lasts very long, the shield of the Turtle lasts either until it's destroyed or the holder wants to remove it, same goes for Akumas and sentimonsters who disappear only when the holder wants them to or their affected object is destroyed.
Let's talk about Zodiac tier. Miraculous of the third tier shouldn't have the second ability like more powerful ones. These powers are the most inconsistent. Even if we haven't seen all of them yet.
8. Mouse can create many small clones of the holder. It is unclear how these clones communicate with each other and how many of them this Miraculous can create. The holder can control the number of clones. This power was very convenient in "Kwamibuster" and it makes sense symbolically for the mouse. What activates the time-limit for children? Marinette didn't have any problems with it when she became Multimouse.
9. Snake can create a 5-minute time loop and has the ability to come back in time. This Miraculous feels a bit overpowered for the Miraculous of the Zodiac Tier. The holder can reset the time as many times as he/she needs to. It's was a good source of drama and trauma in "Desperada". I was honestly surprised that Adrien was capable of fighting after spending months in a loop. But this doesn't change the fact that Snake is overpowered. You can give this Miraculous the power to hypnotise or keep the time ability but place a limit on the number of resets. How does the lyre work as a weapon? Who knows? No one!
10. Dragon can shapeshift into elements: water, wind and lightning. It has the coolest transformation words hands down (Bring the Storm and Open Sky). Apparently this Miraculous doesn't have the time limit.
11. Rabbit can time travel or jump through alternative realities, even writers aren't sure. Time-travel in this show is so badly written it gives me a headache. This Miraculous shouldn't exist just like its powers. Snake belongs to the same tier, but 5 minutes and whole centuries of time jumps aren't comparable in power levels. They are not and this is the hill I will die on. Give the Rabbit powers related to its symbolism in China like an ability to de-age people, heal them or give them a speed boost in contrast with Turtle who might have the ability to slow down.
This Miraculous is so special that its Kwami - Fluff can live separately from his Miraculous in a Miracle Box for millennia (Fluff lives in the Box in "Sandboy", but his Miraculous, pocket watch, was passed down for generations in Alix's family). This is a discussion for a separate post, however. There's a lot to unpack. We'll do that some other time. You will suffer with me but at a later date.
12. Horse can create portals. They could lead anywhere, which is pretty cool. On the other hand, this power is not very useful in direct combat, especially when it's used by a child since we can have only one portal per transformation.
13. Monkey can cause a malfunction in powers of other people. What is the point of this? This power was specifically created by writers to defeat Akuma in "Party Crasher". That's it. What if your target is not magical? How does this Miraculous work in different circumstances?
14. Pig shows people their greatest desire. Both the holder and the recipient of this power can see this desire. Chat Noir wasn't impressed in "Guiltrip" and neither was I. It's underpowered compared to other Miraculous in this tier. Also, why does the tambourine can shoot energy beams? Why?
That's all I have to say on the matter. I'll update the power analysis as needed.

The Things You Give Pt. 11
Happy spooky season, my dear loves! Thank you for being so patient with me as I publish each part. I really hope you enjoy this next part. I love hearing from you guys so feel free to message or leave a comment <3
Steven Hyde x Reader
Tumblr media
“Eric!” Y/n said, completely frozen in shock. “W-what are you, uh, what are y-you doing h-here?”
Eric’s face didn’t change as he stared at the couple in front him, wide eyes and jaw slack. So many questions ran through his mind as well as different emotions. Rage, confusion, hurt, shock, and most of all: betrayal. He wasn’t sure if he wanted to scream or strangle them both. His hands started to shake and he swore his heart was going to beat out of his chest.
“Uh…it’s not what it looks like!” Hyde said, trying to save the situation. “She was helping me move some boxes and she found some of my nudie magazines.”
“Yeah!” Y/n cut in, catching on. “And I started making fun of him for it and that’s why it sounded like we were talking dirty and that’s why we look like this because of all the moving…and it’s hard work. And we smell like this because we got all sweaty. But nothing else happened!”
Eric couldn’t believe that his best friend and sister would think he was that stupid. He couldn’t even say anything to them. All he could do was calmly walk out through the basement door without saying a word.
“Oh no,” Y/n said under her breath.
“Crap,” Hyde sighed and looked at Y/n who looked like she was about to cry.
Down at the Hub, the couple and everyone else, minus Eric, sat around their usual table as Y/n and Hyde relayed what had happened just a short hour prior.
“He was like a deer caught in the headlights,” Hyde said. “A very angry looking deer.”
“You know what this means?” Donna asked. “This means that he’s going to rant for the next six months and guess who is going to have hear about it?” She pointed a finger at herself. “That’s right, me. Over and over and over again.”
“I know,” Y/n grumbled and hid her face in her hand. “This is so not the way I wanted him to find out. Any of you really.”
“Yeah, I still think I found out the worst way still,” Donna commented and took a sip of her root beer, but not before she shuddered dramatically. “I still have nightmares about it.”
“Yeah it wasn’t a thrill for us either,” Hyde said and took some fries from Y/n’s basket.
“To be honest, I’m kinda scared to see him,” Y/n said after taking a sip of her coke. “He just…didn’t say anything and stormed out.”
“Maybe he didn’t know what to say,” Jackie said. “I mean, he probably was disgusted.”
“Jackie, what the hell, man?” Y/n asked her frustrated.
“No, I mean it’s his sister and best friend. How would you feel if that happened to you?” she defended.
“It did happen to me!” Y/n said. “When Mike McCan’t Keep It In His Pants over here and Easily Spread Butter started sleeping together.”
“First of all, that’s a good burn,” Kelso laughed. “And second of all…I totally nailed your sister! Now if I can nail you, I’d done it with all the Forman girls!”
Hyde didn’t even hesitate to connect his fist to Kelso’s shoulder. Kelso grunted and glared at him before scooting away from him.
“So, how did it make you feel? How did you react?” Donna asked.
“Well, I was beyond angry because I felt so betrayed and disgusted and lied to—ah crap,” Y/n said, realizing what the point was. “Dammit, Jackie, I hate it when you’re right!”
“Which isn’t very common,” Jackie stated, holding up a finger. “But when I am, it’s a big deal.”
“Have you guys seen Eric?” Y/n asked.
           “I haven’t,” Donna answered.
           “Me either,” Jackie mumbled.
           “Nada,” Kelso said.
“Sorry,” Fez finally said, shaking his head.
“Man, I’m kinda freaking out,” Hyde said. “Normally I don’t, especially when it comes to Forman, but you should’ve seen him. I’ve never seen him like this. Normally, he’s like, you know, all squeaky and twitchy, but this time, he was just quiet and walked out calmly.”
“Yeah, I don’t what I’m going to do once I see him,” Y/n said, leaning back and crossing her arms.
“Well, you might want to figure it out soon because he’s coming in,” Fez said, panicking a little.
Y/n and Hyde whipped around to see Eric stomping in, but the second he came in and made eye contact with them, the air around them suddenly went still.
           “Hi, Eric,” Y/n said softly.
“Hey man,” Hyde said, trying to sound as casual as he could.
The dirty blonde twin looked at them before turning away back into the parking lot.
“Damn,” Kelso mumbled and turned back around to face the group. “He’s really pissed.”
“Trust me guys, I’ve known Eric our whole lives and I’ve never seen him like this,” Y/n said.
“Well, duh, you shared the womb with the guy,” Fez piped up and everyone couldn’t help but roll their eyes. “I guess you can say, you were wombmates.”
Y/n couldn’t help but giggle at that while everyone else groaned and rolled their eyes.
                                                                         ⧝⧝⧝
The next day, things between the twins and Hyde were still eerily quiet. Eric couldn’t even be in the same room as them. Even at the breakfast table, Eric refused to look up from his plate. Kitty and Red shared a look, knowing something was wrong.
“What’s wrong with you?” Red asked. “You’re usually annoying in the morning. Actually, I can get used to this.”
“Red,” Kitty said sternly and turned to Eric. “Eric, honey, are you okay?”
“M’ fine,” Eric mumbled shortly without looking up and shoveled some eggs into his mouth.
“Did you get into a fight with Donna?” she asked.
“Mom, I said I’m fine. Can we please drop it?” Eric asked, trying to not raise his voice at her.
She held her hands up. “Fine, fine.”
The table went back to ground breaking silence while everyone sat there tense and still, except for Red who was actually enjoying the silence for once.
Outside later in the afternoon, everyone, minus Eric, sat in the driveway, shooting some hoops and talking on top of the Vista Cruiser.
           “Where’s Eric?” Jackie asked.
“He’s…somewhere,” Y/n answered and looked towards the house. “I think he’s been hiding in his room all day. Or he just goes where we aren’t.”
“Probably both,” Jackie said and shuddered. “I wouldn’t want to be in his room either.”
Donna laughed. “That’s true. One time I just walked in and he was reading a nudey magazine and I swear I’ve never seen him jump up so fast. It would’ve been funnier if he wasn’t naked.”
Y/n and Jackie shuddered in horror.
           “Gross!” Jackie exclaimed.
“What she said,” Y/n said and gagged. “Thanks for that mental image.”
Y/n  looked over to Steven, Michael, and Fez playing basketball and made eye contact with Steven. In that split second, Michael took advantage of it and swiped the ball from him. He made a slam dunk and stuck his tongue out at Hyde.
Hyde quickly grabbed the ball and spun around, dodging Kelso’s attempted swipe and slammed it into the basket.
“Hyde: two, Kelso: uno,” Hyde said, smirking and balanced the ball on his hip.
“I love watching you play basketball,” Y/n said, her voice lowering.
“Yeah?” Hyde responded, staring her down.
“Yeah, it’s hot,” she responded before realizing they were in front of everyone and cleared her throat. “Or you know, whatever.”
           “Get a room!” Kelso shouted.
           “It’s my house!” Y/n argued.
“Exactly! So, you should go find one and get that out of here,” he responded.
“Shut up, man. We used to have to watch you and Jackie make out all the time,” Hyde said.
“Yeah, but it wasn’t weird like this is,” Kelso responded.
Y/n and Hyde rolled their eyes at him before turning back to each other.
“So, have you seen him?” he asked her.
           “No, have you?” she asked.
He shook his head. “We’re going to have face him sooner or later.”
“Later,”  Y/n answered. “Gives me time to think of ways to calm him down. Or by the time we do face him we’ll be in Guadalajara.”
Hyde shook his head smiling. “Come on, let’s get this over with.”
Y/n  sighed and hopped off the car. “Fine. Let’s go find him.”
“I think I saw him go into the basement earlier,” Fez said and everyone followed Y/n and Steven to go to the basement.
“Can we get some privacy?” Y/n asked when they noticed everyone was following them.
“No way!” Kelso answered. “We aren’t going to miss the show.”
            Y/n grunted, feeling annoyed. “Idiots.”
Hyde turned around and slammed his fist into Kelso’s shoulder. “Will you get out of here? All of you!”
           “Ow!” Kelso yelled. “Fine!”
Everyone dispersed leaving Hyde and Y/n alone.
Begrudgingly, Hyde and Y/n made their way to the basement where they did, in fact, see Eric sitting on the couch watching TV. But judging his body language, he was tense and still really pissed off.
“Eric?” Y/n called out gently, afraid to scare him off like a stray animal. “How are you doing?” She rounded to the couch to face him and saw his chin resting on his thumb while his index finger held up his cheek. He wasn’t paying attention to the tv and was just sitting there, seething.
He looked at her from the corner of his eye to back to the screen. He stayed silent, refusing to speak to her.
She looked at Hyde desperately, needing help.
“Listen, Forman. We need to talk about this,” Hyde said stepping forward.
“There’s nothing to talk about,” he said, struggling to keep his voice leveled.
“Yes, there is and it’s need to happen,” Steven responded. “I get it, you’re pissed. But this needs to be hashed out so it doesn’t become another Kelso fiasco. So, come on. Let’s talk.”
“Talk about what, exactly?” Eric snapped. “What’s there to talk about? Talk about you screwing my sister? Or that you guys went behind my back and have been lying to me this whole time? Or how ‘bout this, that you went after my twin sister? You know it was bad enough when Kelso did it with Laurie, but Y/N?” He shook his head.
“Eric, please,” Y/n begged. “Trust me, this is not the way we wanted you to find out.”
He jerked his head to look at her. “How did you want me to find out?”
She shrugged her shoulders nervously. “I don’t know, but somewhere along the lines we wanted to tell you.”
“And how did you think I would take that?!” he yelled. “You’re sleeping with my best friend! I can’t believe you guys would do this to me!”
“Okay, first all, Forman, we’re not doing anything to you,” Hyde defended. “In fact, this isn’t about you at all. And second of all, it’s nothing like that. It’s more than that now.”
Eric’s face darkened. “What do you mean by that?”
Hyde cast his eyes down and looked to Y/n before turning his gaze back to Eric. “I love her, man.”
“WHAT?!” Eric practically screamed. He dragged a hand down his face and started to pace behind the couch.
Y/n stayed seated as she watched her brother’s breathing becoming uneven and shaken. She knew that he was about to lose his cool.
“What the hell do you mean you love her?” he continued shouting. “Out of all the stupid crap you’ve pulled, this has got to be the dumbest one yet!”
“What do you mean by that?” Hyde asked offended.
“I think you know exactly what I mean,” he replied. “You stringing my sister along for fun, making her believe that you’re in love with her and then when you get tired of her, you’re going to dump her for the next girl that comes along.”
“That’s what you think I’m doing?” Hyde was getting visibly angry. “You think I would that to her? I’m not freaking Kelso!”
“I don’t see you denying it!”
“Hang on!” Y/n shouted, standing from her seat. “Do you really think I’m naïve to fall for something like that again?”
“Well, you did before,” Eric spat.
Y/n’s blood started to boil. “That’s nothing compared to what Steven and I have! What he is saying is true because I love him too!”
Eric’s face fell and flushed red, clenching his teeth. “How long?”
“How long what?” Y/n asked.
“How long has this been going on?”
“Well, uh, since June,” she answered.
“So, you’ve been dating secretly for four months and never thought of when to tell me?! When were you going to tell me? After you guys secretly got married? Or after the birth of your first secret child?”
“It’s not like we wanted to hurt you,” Y/n defended. “We didn’t plan for anyone else to find out either.”
“Everybody else knows?!” Eric shouted.
“Nice going,” Hyde grumbled, elbowing Y/n’s arm. Gently, of course.
“Uh—yeah. They kind of…found out on their own. Except for Fez. Kelso told him, but other than that, yeah. They caught on.”
“How do you think Mom and Dad are going to take it when they find out their daughter is screwing the town’s rebel?!”
“You mean the one they took in?” she asked angrily. “The one who they love like another son?”
“I’m warning you now when Dad finds out, you’re dead. Both of you. And I mean literally,” Eric warned and continued to pace.
“I know, but this a risk that we’re willing to take,” she said and walked over to where Hyde was standing and wrapped her arms around his waist. Steven wrapped a protective arm around her and held her close. “I love him and he loves me. I’m actually happy.”
“I know this hard for you to get through your thick skull, but I really do love her, man. For the first time ever, I’m happy,” Steven said, more calmly this time.
“Stop saying that!” Eric screeched.
“It’s true, man!” Hyde yelled back. “Will you quit acting like a two-year-old and actually have a decent conversation?”
“You don’t get to tell me how to act when you’ve been going behind my back like this,” Eric growled. “Don’t you dare tell me how to act!”
“This is why we didn’t want to tell you!” Y/n said. “We knew you’d act like this!”
“How am I supposed to act, Y/n? I mean, for four months, four damn months, you’ve been doing whatever you’ve been doing in secret. I can barley understand all of this. I don’t know how the hell you expect me to accept this!”
“Well, you’re gonna have to because this isn’t going to end anytime soon!” Hyde said.
Eric finally stopped pacing and looked Hyde straight in the eye. “You know what bothers me the most? That I gave you more than one chance to tell me the truth and you lied to me. I’m supposed to be your best friend, your brother, and you couldn’t even come to me to say, ‘Hey man, I like your sister and I’m thinking of asking her out. Just thought I’d give you a heads up,’” Eric said, doing an impression of Hyde.
Hyde unhooked his arm from Y/n’s shoulder. “Okay, first of all the impression, uncanny,” he said sarcastically. “And second, even if I did come to you first you still wouldn’t be okay with it.”
“Of course not!” he said. “But it still would’ve been better than being lied to!”
Hyde and Y/n grew quiet and looked at each other. As much as they hated to admit it, he was right. They should’ve at least said something to him before all this.
“You know what? I can’t even look at you two right now,” Eric finally said and walked over to the door, grabbing his coat from the rack.
“Where you going?” Y/n asked, tears beginning to surface.
“Anywhere but here!” Eric shouted and slammed the door on his way out.
“Damn it,” Y/n groaned, rubbing her hands down her face. “I knew this was going to blow up in our faces.”
“Let’s just give him some space,” Hyde said and brought her in for a hug. “It’ll be okay. He can’t stay mad forever.”
“What was all that yelling about?” Kitty asked, coming down the stairs.
Y/n pushed herself away from Hyde and stood close to him. “We got into a fight with Eric.”
“You two got into a fight with Eric?” she asked surprised. “Why? What happened?”
“Donna and Eric had a fight,” Hyde and Y/n answered quickly together.
“Nice!” Y/n laughed.
“Alright!” Hyde laughed with her.
Y/n turned back to her mother. “We sided with her and now he’s all pissed at us.”
“What about this time?” Kitty asked.
“I’m not too sure,” Y/n lied. “Something about Star Wars.”
“Oh, for the love of God,” she responded, rolling her eyes. “Those two fight over the dumbest things.”
“You can say that again,” Hyde said, chuckling to himself.
“Well, when Eric gets back, make you sure tell him dinner’s almost ready.” She trotted back up the stairs, leaving the couple along again.
They sighed together and collapsed on the couch next to each other.
“What are we going to do?” Y/n groaned and dropped her head on his shoulder.
Hyde kissed her head and sighed as he put his arm around her. “I don’t know, but we’ll figure it out.”
“I love you.”
A small smile crept up on his face. “I love you too.”
                                               ⧝⧝⧝
The next day at the hub, the gang, again minus Eric, sat around a table eating burgers and fries. Y/n slurped on a milkshake while listening to Jackie’s incessant rant about God-knows-what.
“So, then as Brittany took the position of head cheerleader from me, now the whole squad has been completely ignoring me and talking behind my back. That skank wad,” said Jackie, crossing her arms.
“I thought you quit cheerleading?” Y/n asked.
“Yeah, but then I realized I needed to go back to my natural habitat. Snobby and bitchy.”
“At least you’re honest,” Y/n said..
“So, you talked to Eric, huh?” Donna asked.
“Yeah, and he didn’t take it well at all,” Hyde responded.
“Well what happened?” Fez asked.
Y/n and Hyde went into the details of what happened the night before with everyone’s eyes glued to their faces.
“Man, he’s taking this a lot harder than I thought,” Donna said, leaning back and taking a sip of her soda.
“I’m not surprised,” Kelso piped up. “I mean, he hated it when me and Laurie got together, but yours is way worse.”
Y/n squinted at him. “How is this worse, exactly?”
“Well, me and Laurie were just doing it,” he responded. “You guys actually feelings for each other.”
“No, you idiot,” said Fez. “If he was just doing her he would be angrier because then Hyde would look at her just like a hot piece of meat instead of actually having feelings for her.”
“Thanks, Fez,” Y/n said, happy that someone made that point.
“Or,” Kelso said. “He’s madder because this is a thing that’s going to stick and not just be a fling and get over with.”
“That’s also a good point,” Jackie said.
Y/n gave a look to Donna and shook her head before continuing. “Anyway, I don’t know what else to do.”
“There’s nothing you really can do,” Donna responded. “He knows now and there’s nothing you can say or do to make him any less pissed.”
“Except if you two broke up,” Jackie said.
“Oh, I got it!” Kelso said, snapping his fingers. “You two should break up!”
“Kelso!” Hyde and Y/n said in unison.
“No! I mean you two should fake break up and then Forman won’t be so mad at you anymore,” he responded.
“Well, that’s not too bad of an idea,” Jackie said.
“What’s the point of that?” Hyde said. “He’s already pissed off at us for lying to him. What makes you think this one is better?”
“Yeah, good point,” Fez said. “Well, then Donna is right. There’s nothing you can do.”
Y/n sighed and leaned back, rubbing her temples. “This sucks.”
“I know, but he’ll come to accept it,” Donna said. “Especially if this is going to last.”
“What Miss Kitty and Mr. Red?” Fez asked. “Red is a fireball. He’s going to lose his crap.”
Everybody gasped.
“Red!” Kelso shouted. “I didn’t even think about him!” Then he started laughing. “You’re so dead, man.”
Hyde glared at him. “You think we didn’t think of that?”
“Well, we’re eighteen now. He can’t tell us what to do and who to be with,” Y/n said, turning to Steven. “He’s going to have to get over it.”
“Yeah, after he sticks his foot in your ass,” Donna laughed.
“I’ll take it,” Hyde said and put his arm around her shoulders. “I’ll take anything for you.”
Y/n giggled as everyone awe’d at him.
“Shut up!” Hyde yelled, but a smile formed on his face anyway.
A ding at the door caused the group to turn around. Zack stood at the entrance and made his way over to Y/n once he made eye contact with her. Y/n internally groaned.
“So, you’re with the school burnout now huh?” Zack mocked. “I knew you wouldn’t be able to find someone better than me.”
Y/n blinked at him. “Great. You’re back. Don’t you have to be annoying somewhere else? Like in college? Or did you fail and disappoint them too?”
“BURN!” Kelso shouted, laughing along with the rest of the group.
“I didn’t fail out,” he defended. “They kicked me out.”
Y/n laughed. “For what? For spiking the sorority girls’ punch?”
“No,” he said, growing frustrated at everyone’s laughter. “I broke into the girl’s locker room and drilled a hole through the wall.”
Y/n through her head back and laughed. “Yeah, you know what, I upgraded. And my guy maybe a ‘burnout’ but at least he doesn’t cheat on me with some skank.”
“I only cheated because you wouldn’t put out,” he said, his cheeks puffing out.
“Yeah, get lost, Loser,” Y/n said, throwing the word back in his face.
He pfft’d and smacked Hyde in the arm. “Good luck with this bitch, man.”
Hyde glared at Zack before slowly standing and winding his fist back and connecting it to his nose. Zack cried out and held his nose in his hand.
“What the hell, you prick?!” he shouted.
“Call my girlfriend a bitch again and I’ll make sure you’ll be the first person to touch his chin to his ass!” Steven shouted. “Get the hell out of here!”
Zack didn’t respond as he scrambled out of the building.
“That was awesome!” Donna cried out, laughing.
“Yeah, that was,” Kelso said, smiling. “I’ve never heard a guy scream like a bitch before.”
“Me neither,” Y/n chuckled and looked to Hyde. “By the way, that was so hot.”
“I gotta protect my girl,” he said and leaned in for a kiss. Y/n smiled into the kiss as she placed her hand on his face, scratching his sideburns.
“Oh, God,” Eric called out from the door, feeling disgusted seeing them being affectionate.
Hyde and Y/n pulled apart and looked at Eric.
“Hi,” Y/n said. “What are you doing here?”
“I thought I’d come down and see my dear sister with our dear friends, to try and maybe to hang out and get some normalcy, but seeing you two makes me want to vomit.”
“Oh, come on, Eric,” Donna said. “It’s not like this Kelso and Laurie.”
“That’s what I said!” Hyde said, trying to deflate the situation.
“Besides, they’re kind of cute together,” Donna said with a smile on her face. She looked to Y/n who mouthed a ‘thank you’ and winked at her. “You can’t stay mad at them forever.”
“Maybe not, but I can for a really, really long time,” he answered and was about to walk out the door when Y/n stopped him.
“Eric, wait no,” she said and got up, grabbing his hand. “Please don’t go. Sit with us.”
“Look, Y/n. I can’t. You have no idea how angry I am that you lied to me. We’re twins and we’re not supposed to have any secrets between us. We share everything, but you know the thing that really hurts the most? It’s that you felt like you couldn’t come to me at all. I can understand Mom and Dad, especially Dad because he’s well, scary, but me? I thought we were best friends and you trusted me enough to come to me.”
Tears filled Y/n’s eyes. “Eric, I do.”
“Clearly not enough,” he said, hurt laced in his face and drew his hand back from hers. He looked to Hyde who looked like he felt deep guilt. “We’re supposed to be best friends and you couldn’t even tell me the truth the first time. You clearly don’t care about anyone else but yourselves.”
“Eric, that’s not fair!” Y/n cried.
“You want to talk to me about fairness?!” he raised his voice again. “This isn’t fair. None of this is fair! It wasn’t fair that you went behind my back and started doing it! Or, that you couldn’t even come tell me that you have fallen in love with each other! That’s not fair.”
He walked out the Hub, leaving Y/n in tears. She sat back down and rested her head in the crook of Hyde’s neck, face turned away from the group so they couldn’t see her tears.
Hyde wrapped his around her waist and held her close, trying his best to comfort her.
“I’m sorry Y/n,” Donna said. “I’ll talk to him later.”
“But he’s right,” Y/n croaked out and turned her face back to them. “This isn’t fair to him and we did him wrong.”
“But you can’t help how you feel,” Jackie said sweetly. “It’s not like you did this to get back at Eric for something. You two truly do love each other and if he cared about you, he wouldn’t be so angry.”
“No, he has every right to be,” Y/n said, wiping her eyes. “Yes, we have strong feelings for each other, but we still went behind his back and betrayed him. He has every right to feel the way he does.”
No one else knew what to say, but to look at each other.
“I gotta go,” Y/n said and ran out before anyone else could see more tears.
“I should go too,” Hyde said. “This is my fault too.”
He got up and walked out after her, feeling the same guilt as she did.

Chapter 2
Summary: MK wakes up in the hospital. If there's one thing he knows, it's that he's got to get away.
Trigger Warnings: hospital, referenced abuse, mentioned death
2990 words
“—just started freaking out—”
“—swear, if this is more monkey madness you’re putting him through—”
“—not.”
Words and voices faded in and out. What was going on? His head felt like it was going to explode. Everything was fuzzy, and he hadn’t even opened his eyes yet.
Come to think of it, he probably shouldn’t open his eyes. He didn’t want them to know he was awake.
MK fought to keep his breathing even, just barely suppressing a groan.
He hadn’t escaped.
He was in the “hospital”, no doubt, completely surrounded by those fake shells of his friends. He had to get out of here.
“—think he’s waking up!”
“—id! Kid, can you hear me?”
Shit. They knew he was awake. There was no getting out of this.
He fluttered his eyes open, sitting up with great difficulty.
“MK? How are you feeling?” Fake Tang asked. He looked so real, too.
MK scanned the room as subtly as he could. The door wasn’t blocked. He had to make a run for it. It was a long shot, but if he could just get to his staff, then he could get out of here. But it was so far away.
Pretend Monkey King took a step closer, reaching out a hand to put on MK’s shoulder — or to kill him.
“Don’t touch me!” he demanded.
“Oh, kid—”
He scrambled off the bed and onto the opposite side, nearly collapsing entirely at the immediate searing pain that came from it. He’d forgotten about his leg.
“Shit, kid, sit back down!” Not-Pigsy said, like he was panicking and genuinely worried for MK’s safety and well-being.
As they advanced on him, MK backed away, using the wall for support. He had to get away.
He made it to the door, but immediately bumped into something — or someone. He turned around, stifling a pained gasp at the action. Pretend Sandy was there, almost totally blocking the doorway.
He looked back behind him, terror growing as he saw the concern etched on his not-friends faces. It looked so real, and that only made it worse.
He had to get out of here.
He faked left. As predicted, not-Sandy followed.  MK quickly changed his direction, sliding past him and making a break for it down the hall.
The violent burning crawling up his leg was, quite literally, his downfall.  His leg gave out, and he was sent sprawling to the floor, and then he was being surrounded, by nurses and his friends alike, and then… he didn’t remember much, after that.
He woke up again in the same blindingly white hospital room. It felt like he was missing more than he knew he was.
This time, he was alone.
Hope soared in his chest. If he wasn’t being watched, he could get out! He went to sit up, but was stopped short by straps that were holding him down.
“No,” he begged, tugging on them desperately. “No!”
He was trapped. Done for. They were going to kill him, and there would be nothing he could do about it.
Oh god, he was sure now that they’d make it extra slow and painful. Of course they would. They had to despise him, by now.
He heard someone approaching from the other side of the door, and immediately, he went limp, pretending to be asleep again.
The door opened.
“Oh, bud…” he heard pretend-Monkey-King say. “You’re gonna be okay.” they must have known MK was awake. There was no other reason they’d be spewing this bullshit. Maybe they could watch him even without a human puppet around.
MK couldn’t take it any longer. “Just drop it,” he said, staring numbly at the ceiling. “You don’t have to act anymore. The jig has been up for a long time.” he blinked back the tears that were pushing at his eyes. “So, who am I talking to? Jin or Yin? Or both? I don’t know how this Calabash shit works.”
MK couldn’t see not-Monkey King’s reaction to that. He just kept staring at the ceiling, blinking away his tears. His head was beginning to hurt.
“Those bastards? You think—? Oh, MK…”
Oh, great, now they were playing from this angle. When would they just give it up? He knew it was them.
“I don’t think. I know.”
“Oh, come on, bud, you don’t really think they could replicate my stunningly good looks, do you?”
In spite of himself, MK laughed. That was just like his mentor.
Monkey King smiled. “Really, bud, it’s me. Wukong.”
MK glared at the ceiling. “Nice try. The real one wasn’t… I wouldn’t have called the real one by that name.” he never had before. The demons clearly hadn’t done enough research.
Pretend Monkey King’s confusion was so fake it hurt. “What do you mean?”
“We’re not that close, you know. Hell, I doubt he even actually knows my name. Just — god. Kill me. Don’t try to make me believe it’s really them. Just get it over with!”
“Dammit, MK, we’re not going to kill you!”
“Whatever.”
For a moment, fake Monkey King looked genuinely upset. He sighed. “Get some rest, kid.”
And then he left.
MK spent the next few minutes in silence, struggling to get out of the restraints. But they were tough. Fucking hell.
But he didn’t give up. He couldn’t afford to. He had to get out of them, he had to get home, to his real friends. How long had he been in here, anyway? Pigsy would probably be pissed at him for missing work.
The door opened, and this time, it was the fake version of Mei. He didn’t even get the chance to wonder what she wanted before she spoke.
“Ask me something,” she demanded. “Monkey King told us what you think is going on, so ask me something. Something only you and I would know.”
Oh, so they could make it all worse by making him see just how much they knew about him? Hard pass.
At his lack of reply, Mei began to talk. “We’ve known each other since we were 13. Pigsy took you in a year or two after that. Your favorite season of Monkey King: the animated series is season 8, because you think whatshisname is hot.”
Okay, sue him, he had a thing for redheads! But that wasn’t important right now. “So what? Anyone could find out stuff like that!”
Mei huffed, continuing on. “Your favorite coping mechanism used to be writing fic about Monkey King adopting you. You wrote one of the biggest fics in the fandom ever.”
“And? That’s not that hard to figure out!”
Mei looked like she was about to scream. “Your parents were bad people.”
MK, who had been struggling, immediately went still.
“They were bad people, and they were even worse parents. You told me not to go after them, even after you got kicked out. Because you’re too good to have ever even considered it. What else do you want from me, MK? When you defeated DBK—”
MK had to admit, he’d almost begun to believe her. “You almost had me there,” he admitted, “I don’t know how the hell you found out about any of that, but if you didn’t notice, the DBK thing didn’t work last time either.”
“...What?”
“Oh my god, I’m not that dumb. I would remember locking away DBK if it had really happened.”
“But… it did?”
“Yeah, sure. I really did lock away the entire Demon Bull family, yeah. And Tang and Pigsy have some weird gay relationship going on, and Mo can just talk now, and Sandy is hosting romantic river cruises, of all things. And you,” he said, forcing down the vomit. “are in love with me!”
Mei made a face. “Ew! That’s disgusting. Wait, okay, I think I have one. What if I tell you what MK stands for? Then will you believe it’s me?”
MK rolled his eyes. Nobody knew what MK really stood for but the real Mei. Even demons would have a hard time figuring it out. Hopefully.
“Whatever.”
They were probably bluffing, anyway.
His name, what MK really stood for, was a nearly perfectly kept secret. Especially in… recent times.
“MK stands for Monkey King, “because he’s like, my hero! And doesn’t MK have this super cool and kinda mysterious edge to it?” she replied, imitating him badly and hardly missing a beat. “And, even though you think it’s a super cool name, you’re embarrassed about it, and keep it to yourself.”
MK glared at her. “I don’t know how you heard that—”
“What will get you to believe me?” she begged.
“Nothing! Absolutely nothing! I’m not falling for this bullshit again!”
“Ask me something! Anything! Please.”
MK thought for a moment. There was maybe one thing he could think of that they wouldn’t know. Something real. Something they would have no reason to.
He sighed, weighing it over in his mind. There was no downside, he supposed. “What did you say when I first told you about… me?”
Again, Mei didn’t even need a moment to think. “I told you that I was really happy that you were comfortable telling me, and that I would love to take you shopping sometime to get you some better clothes, and then I demanded to know where your father lived so that I could scoop his eyes out with a plastic spoon, because he doesn’t deserve to even be able to lay eyes on you. And then I said I would keep him alive, but only barely, because an asshole like that deserves to suffer.”
MK’s blood went cold. It was too oddly specific, and had happened years ago. There was no way they could have known. Which could only mean…
“Mei?”
“Yes!” she cried, nodding frantically.
He couldn’t help himself, the tears he’d been so desperate to hold back earlier finally beginning to fall. “It’s really you?”  he sniffled.
Mei nodded. “It is, I swear.”
Carefully, she wrapped him in a hug. It felt so nice and comforting. For a moment, MK just let himself be swept away by it.
Until the door opened.
He pushed Mei away gently, wiping his eyes furiously.
“You uh… feeling alright, bud?” Monkey King… the real one…? asked.
“I’m okay.”
It was real. Pigsy and Tang, they were both real. And Sandy, and Monkey King, and Mei. God, he was so stupid.
“So… you thought you were in some evil magical illusion? Why?” Sandy asked.
“Because I was there before, and—” MK cut himself off. “Wait, no, this is still wrong. I would remember defeating DBK. That never happened.” But they knew — but he also would have remembered — he didn’t know what to believe. Oh god. How was he supposed to know for sure? How was he supposed to be confident in his decision? What was he supposed to do?
The others shared a look.
“You defeated them weeks ago,” Tang said, slowly.
“In like, April,” Mei added.
“It’s March,” MK corrected, his breathing picking up.
“It’s definitely May,” Pigsy said.
“I don’t… but…” MK took a deep breath, trying to ground himself. He didn’t feel so good. His head hurt so bad. He wanted it to stop.
His eyes were hurting, too. Was the world always so covered in little black spots?
“MK?” someone asked, their voice a thousand miles away. “Are you alright?”
The darkness fully overtook his vision, and MK didn’t have the chance to answer.
———
“—kill you, monkey asshole—”
“—do I have to do with this?”
“—our kid a — concussion!”
“—my fault?”
MK groaned, feeling faintly like he was going to vomit. He didn’t try to sit up, this time.
“MK, how are you?”
He eyed his maybe-friends warily. “Trying to figure out if I’m being tricked.”
“Yeah, about that. You’ve got a concussion, kiddo.”
Well, that was a lousy excuse. “I didn’t even hit my head,” he said, rolling his eyes. “Try again.”
“What about that earthquake earlier?” Sandy offered.
“That lasted for like, ten seconds.” Not even. It had been over before it had even actually begun. They needed to try harder than this to fool him. He’d almost fallen for their lies the last time he’d been awake. He couldn’t risk it happening again.
“It definitely lasted for longer than that,” Pigsy said.
“No?”
“Yeah?”
“I bet that’s what happened, then. You hit yourself on the head during the earthquake, forget some important shit — I mean, stuff — gave yourself a concussion, and then you went on a quest that I like to call how badly can I scare my parentals?” Pigsy said, all but yelling by the time he was done with his explanation.
Out of all of that, MK couldn’t help but hone in on one part of it. “...parentals?”
Mei sighed. “You’ve forgotten a lot.”
MK looked at her for a long moment. He still just wasn’t totally convinced. But if there was one thing he knew Yin and Jin would jump at, it was this. One last try. “You know what? I changed my mind. I am in love with you.”
“I — what the fuck, MK?” Mei asked, looking sick at the thought.
“Oh, thank god,” he said, sighing in relief. “Okay, I believe you now.”
Thinking about it, he supposed it all made sense. It didn’t make it much less disturbing, though. In fact, the growing sense of horror he was getting was almost worse than thinking he was inside the Calabash.
But god, it had all been so obvious. Besides the initial earthquake, there had been nothing else like it the entire day. No glitches, no inconsistencies, no random people surrounding him and insisting that this  was completely and totally perfect. Yin and Jin would have probably jumped at the chance to gloat once he’d initially figured it out, too.
In short, MK was just… really fucking stupid.
Shit, it was really hitting him now. He must have seemed absolutely fucking crazy all day. Especially considering he’d never told anybody about his first experience in the Calabash.
His friends really had been concerned about him. And with good reason. To them, he’d just lost his mind out of nowhere.
He’d attacked them. He’d actually landed a hit on Mei. He’d been so sure that they weren’t really them. Oh god.
He couldn’t breathe.
He was so stupid. He’d freaked out over nothing, and had very obviously put his friends through enormous stress. All because of a little paranoia that had snowballed into — well. This.
He’d gotten a fucking concussion, broken something in his leg, he’d attacked Mei, he’d fought with everything in him against the people who were only trying to protect him. And all he had in response was to try to hurt them.
He was an idiot.
“C’mere, bud,” Monkey King said, crouching down beside the bed and wrapping MK in this sort of embrace that was all warm and soft and fuzzy. It was so comforting and nice, and probably more than he deserved. “I’ve got you.”
From the other side of the bed, Mei leaned over, hugging MK from behind.
The others, to the best of their ability with the limited space the hospital bed provided, joined in, however uncomfortably.
It was like being completely cocooned in warmth and love.
They… still wanted him around.
He’d completely flipped shit for no reason, had attacked them and screamed at them and done everything in his power to get away, but they still wanted him around. He’d been so sure they would be disappointed in him, would be angry that he’d fought them so viciously, or even hate him.
But if this was anything to go by, they didn’t.
In fact, he’d never felt so safe.
“You’re gonna be okay,” Tang assured from somewhere to his left.
For the first time in the last day (two days? more?), he actually believed it. His friends were real, they weren’t out to end him, and the danger, for the most part, was gone.
The Demon Bull family was gone, locked away under a mountain. Jin and Yin had nothing to do with it, this time.
Also, Pigsy had willingly referred to himself as MK’s parent figure, and wow was that strange.
Strange, but not unwelcome.
And, if the day’s interactions were anything to go by, it seemed like Monkey King didn’t just tolerate him, but actually… actually cared about him?
He wondered if he’d felt that way at the point in time where MK’s memory stopped.
It was startling to know that everyone else in the room was much better informed about… well, everything, than him. They knew about thoughts and feelings he’d had that he didn’t even recall experiencing. They knew about his greatest battle, about how his relationship with all of them had developed in that time, all of it.
And he didn’t.
There was an uncomfortable gaping hole in his mind that he hadn’t even known was there. He felt sort of… naked without it. Like he’d run to work without his pants on and for some reason or another, couldn’t get back up to grab a pair.
His stupid brain was locking the door so that he couldn’t retrieve his pants.
But it would be okay. Something deep within him told him it would be. Or maybe it was the pile of people crowding around him in a group-hug, who knew. Probably a little bit of both.
But really, he was somehow certain that it would work out. He would regain his memory, and in the meantime, the others could fill him in on everything that he’d missed.
It was all going to be fine. It would take some adjusting, and it would be hard, but they still wanted him around. That was, in of itself, a miracle.
“Wait, does this mean he doesn’t remember that Tang and Pigsy are together?”
“What?”

Chapter 7
Chase was finally able to take Eden home to the house they had just bought in Dawsonville.   Eden supported Chase as the season started to wind down.   He had made the playoffs and now was in contention to win the Championship.     They celebrated their first Halloween together at Cindy and Bills big Halloween Party they have every year.   Chase went as himself and Eden was a cat.    Fletch was Superman.  They had so much fun.   They carved pumpkins, painted her belly, took maternity pictures and just had a good time.

It was a fun time.  Cindy and Bill had gotten a female Doberman and they decided to breed her and Fletch together.     It was a success and Chase and Eden were going to keep two of the puppies once she had them.   October faded to November.    They were headed to Phoenix Raceway for the final Cup race of the season.    Eden was happy she was able to go because she hadn't reached that no fly zone.     It was race day.    They were getting ready to head down to the track.
"Are you nervous?" Eden asks as they walked hand in hand down to the track.
"Nope.   If it is meant to be it will be." Chase replies.
"That is true baby." Eden says.
"Besides I already won my prize, I got to marry my best friend and soul mate and we are about to welcome two healthy babies into this world." Chase says.
"Aww baby." Eden replies.
"I mean it.   If I win the Cup it will just be icing on the already perfect cake." Chase says.
"I love you Clyde and no matter what happens you are a champion in my eyes." Eden says.
Chase kisses her head.   They then headed down to the track.   Chase did what he needed to do.  Finally they were standing at the car during the National Anthem.   Eden had her arm looped through Chase's and had her head on his shoulder.   Chase had his head leaned against hers.   Finally it was time for Chase to get into the car.
"Good luck baby." Eden says kissing him.
"Thank you baby." Chase says.
Eden grabs his hand putting it on her belly.
"Lil Chase and Baby Girl say Good luck daddy." Eden says.
"My whole world." Chase says kissing her rubbing her belly.
Finally Chase gets into the car.   Eden with the help of Bill and Allan gets onto the pit box and takes her seat.    Eden was so excited and nervous.    Cindy and Bill climb up along with Casey's parents and of course Fletch.   Eden didn't go anywhere with out him.
"I am glad you guys are here.  I have a question I want to ask." Eden says to Casey's parents.
"What is that darling?" They ask.
"So our little boy is going to be William Clyde Elliott the third and I want to name our little girl Casey Leeann Elliott after Casey.   But I didn't want to do it without asking first." Eden says.
"Oh Eden, that is so beautiful.   We would be honored for you to name your little girl after our Casey." They say.
"Yes Eden that is a very touching tribute.   I know it will mean the world to Chase as well." Cindy says.
"Yes it will.   Also like that you are carrying on Chase and the Elliott's  name by naming your boy after Chase." Bill says.
Eden smiled.   She was so happy that she got a long with Chase's parents.
"So when are you guys going to get re married in front of family and friends." Cindy asks.
"I am not sure.  I think we are playing it by ear.   Want to welcome the twins before we think of anything else." Eden replies.
"That is probably good. " Bill says.
They chat about everything and anything as they watched the race.   It kept their nerves down.
The laps were winding down and Chase was leading.   Eden started to get excited but nervous at the same time.
"Come on baby, come on baby, come on baby." Eden chants.
"Eden honey calm down.   All this excitement isn't good for those little ones growing in your belly."  Cindy says.
"Nope specially with you being so close to being due." Bill says.
"I know but trust me they are kicking so they know their daddy is about to win." Eden says.
And Chase won the race and the championship.   Eden was so happy.   They all leave the box and head to victory lane.    After Chase did his burn outs he finally pulled into victory circle.   He gets out of the car and Eden swarmed him with a big hug.
"I am so proud of you baby." Eden says.
"Thank you princess. " Chase says kissing her not caring that it was on TV.
Eden grabs his hand putting it on her belly.
"The twins say congrats daddy." Eden says.
Chase bends down kissing her belly twice.
"Daddy loves you both so much. "Chase says.
He then looks over at his dad.
"Do you have it?" Chase asks.
"Yes son I do." Bill replies.
He then hands him a small box.
"What is going on?" Eden asks.
Chase drops to his knee taking Eden's hand, "Eden Rose will you marry me?" Chase asks opening the ring box.
"Oh Clyde, yes yes yes yes a million times yes!" Eden exclaims.
Chase slips the ring on her finger.   He then gets up and kisses her.   Everyone cheers.   They take pictures lots and lots of pictures.   Chase made sure she was in most of them showing off her ring.   Chase had media and lots of it.   As things were winding down Eden grabbed the checkered flag and headed back to the coach with Fletch.      She heads to their bedroom and strips out of her clothes.   She wraps the flag around her and waits.
A little bit later she hears the coach door open.
"Eden baby." Chase says.
"Bedroom baby." Eden calls out.
Chase enters a few minutes later still dressed in his firesuit.   He looks at Eden as she kneels up on the bed.
"God you are so beautiful baby." Chase says.
"Come and get your prize." Eden says.
Chase walks over to her.   He pulls her in for a kiss as he takes the flag off her throwing it.    Eden starts to take his firesuit off pushing it down to his waist.   She then lifts his under shirt up over his head throwing it.   She runs her fingers down his chest to the band of his boxers.
"Eden." Chase moans breath hitching.
"Is that a champagne bottle in your hand." Eden asks.
"Yeah baby I have plans for it later but please finish what you started." Chase begs.
He throws the bottle on the side of the bed as Eden finished undressing him.
"Always so hard baby." Eden says licking her lips.
"Just one look at you baby. Beautiful full of me and I get hard." Chase says.
"Good. Now what do you want to do Clyde it's your night." Eden says.
"I want you to ride me if you can." Chase says.
Eden grabs him pushing him down on the bed. She then climbs up in his lap.
"God baby you are so sweaty and icky and god it's turning me on." Eden moans rubbing his tip along her entrance lining up.
"God baby don't tease." Chase moans.
Eden pushes down onto him and starts to move up and down.
"Fuck." Eden moans it felt so good.
"Eden baby." Chase moans moving with her.
Eden kisses him as she moves. They move their hips together in sync. They kiss as they battle for control of the kiss.
"Chase." Eden calls out his name like an animal as she cums hard.
"Eden god." Chase groans as he cums inside her.
They ride it out. Chase then lays her back onto the bed.
"God please." Eden begs needing more.
"Soon baby but first I want to do something with you. Do you trust me?" Chase asks.
"With my life." Eden replies.
"Good now prop your self up on some pillows baby." Chase says.
Eden does as he asked. She watched as he got the champagne bottle. He pours some down her belly until the top of her pubic bone. He then licks and sucks it up.
"Chase fuck that's hot." Eden moans watching.
He pours a little bit more onto her pussy and starts to drink up while he fucked her with his tongue.
"God that's it baby right there." Eden moans.
Chase kept going knowing what she liked.
"Chase fuck." Eden moans as she came again.
Chase lapped it up licking her clean. He then pours a little bit of champagne into his mouth. He hovers over Eden. He leans down taking her mouth with his dropping it into her mouth. Eden sucks it down as Chase pushes into her.
They fuck until they could barely move and then head to shower before laying in bed.
"I think I need to win more championships." Chase says.
"Trying to fuck these babies right on out of me. But seriously baby congratulations I'm so proud of you." Eden says.
"Thanks baby." Chase says.
They end up falling asleep both exhausted yet content.

Every night, without fail, the Goddess of the Moon used to light up the night skies, turning every end of the day into a feat of joy and merriment with just her appearance as she danced through the skies, no chariot of her own, just her and her two glass slippers. The nocturnal hours that she lit were precious and safe, completely and utterly free of the fear of the dark.
It’s not like that anymore. Sometimes she is able to grace the world with the whole of her dance, other times she is shrouded in darkness. Worst of all are the nights when she’s not there at all.
Ever since the Goddess of the Moon was forced to wed the God of the Dark, she had been unable to dance like she had in the more innocent days of yore. The gentle, restful night had been transformed due to their union as with his occurrence within the world had caused a new, dreadful fear to become known to the world. Thus cementing the God of the Dark as having a reputation for being the stealer of one of the two most precious lights that resided within the heavens.
The moon had been taken from her twin, the sun, her elder brother.
Ephraim, the older twin, the literal golden boy, was the emissary of the sun. Commanding a golden chariot pulled by golden horses, he lit up the day with his fierce warmth and light, bringing energy to all lit by it. From the people to the animals to the plants. Each and every day, over the course of several hours, Ephraim and his horses would cause the sun to arc over the world. He would leave a blaze in his wake regardless of which season it was but that is what made him and his chariot, the sun, so admirable.
Meanwhile, at night, Eirika would take to the skies in her brother’s place. She had no chariot, only her two glass slippers but her dance was elegant and illuminating. Her dance would lull children to sleep and her rapier would allow for light to gleam off it, revealing safe paths for weary travellers to follow. Where her brother blazed, she was a dew or a frost. Soft and forgiving, soothing, healing.
Both the sun and the moon had their fair share of followers and devotees.
But Eirika had a devout follower like none other. A man by the name of Valter who had been praying to her since he was a child. It was a childhood interaction between him and the Goddess of the Moon that had caused him to become utterly obsessed with her.
He recalled that fateful night with brilliant clarity, when the Goddess of the Moon had come down from the heavens and presented himself to her in the flesh and nectar.
Beaten. Starved. Abused. Just a sampling of what Valter endured as the bastard child of a noblewoman and a rapist. And like many others, the night was the only reprieve from the scrutiny and assault that he faced from the people around him meant to be his family or carers.
He escaped outside, into the cool and into the fireflies that lingered near the pond at the rear of the orchard. Far, far away from the house with the little, battered cot that he had to call a bed. He looked up into the sky, through the treetops and the stars, and saw her. The most beautiful woman a child could ever conceive of: he saw the moon and his eyes filled upon that visage and with tears, too.
He prayed. He begged. He worshipped in the blinding, holy light of the moon with no temple or ritual. Just his brutal feelings and brutalised body. He laid down his body and soul for this and for that, the Goddess of the Moon stepped down from the heavens and appeared before him.
She caressed this child’s bruised face and cradled him, she ran her fingers through his hair and untangled the knots. Valter wept in her arms and so, Eirika gave him a blessing that he would take to his grave: she kissed his forehead and thus, a seal was placed upon him. The mark of the full moon. So long as he was faithful to her, no harm would befall him all the same as any other beneath Eirika’s moon.
Then, once Eirika felt that she had consoled this child, she disappeared into his arms. A cavalcade of moonlit glitter, silvery and blue, and returned to her eternal dance in the night sky. Every twirl of her body, every kick of her long legs, every flick of her hand, another movement of the moon made as it had its own arc over the Earth.
With the blessing of the Moon Goddess protecting him, his parents never raised a hand against him and he realised something. He was not weak anymore. He was not their prey. And so, empowered by the seal upon his forehead, Valter found his hierophilic purpose in life. Looking up at the indigo skies, he watched, entranced by the moonlight, by the goddess herself. Every night, he watched. He prayed.
Admiration and prayer gave way to obsession in the mind of young Valter as Eirika never visited him again, no matter how he pleaded and begged for her to reappear before him. And so, hopes and wishes, no matter how suffocated with his twisted affection, gave way to actions. He would do whatever it took for Eirika to notice him once more amongst all her mortal followers. Whatever it takes.
Eventually, Eirika did notice Valter once more. He became all consuming to her attention, sickening her to her very core.
He had grown into a man, a man like a wyvern. Tall, bulky, and sneering all the same as that heinous, fanged reptile. His prayers had turned to rallying cries of orchestrated tragedy. Each struck reverberating through the goddess whom he showed his devotion to in frigid cold blood. Until she had to cry out to no one at all as the gods had no higher power they could truly turn to.
He was slaughtering innocents, those whom he deemed as unworthy followers of her and anyone else who had the misfortune of crossing his path like a black cat.  Every kill, a prayer and as they were prayers, Eirika felt each and everyone of them, even so far flung as into the skies and heavens. Every plunge of his spear against his so-called offerings was felt by Eirika as deep as the pain could possibly go and further still.
She felt the eviscerations that he put his victims through, the way he disembowled and revelled in the resulting viscera, how he desecrated what little was left. Every wound, every puncture. Though Eirika did not spill with a single drop of blood, she felt it as though it were a waterfall. The phantom penetrations left her on her knees as she could only grit her white teeth through it at all, screaming, sobbing, body and soul violated with his weapon of choice. His lunatic devotion.
To the envy of the gods of war and the like, Valter was single handedly causing a disbalance in nature and the aether. All in adoration of Eirika and for it, Eirika would be the one punished by her fellow gods and goddesses. Not even her brother the sun could protect her as Lyon, the emissary of death, made his way to the moon, a tranquil fury at Eirika’s perceived negligence.
He visited Eirika in the wayside of twilight, before her nightly dance would begin and he found her on her sublime abode, of marble and pure white rock, retching, holding herself as she felt more - dozens - killed in her name. Lyon knelt beside her.
“Hark, my friend,” he told her, stroking her shoulder, an embodiment of light such as Eirika was not meant for such darkness, “but you must have courage and take to even your own follower to cease his atrocities. My domain is overflowing with souls who were not meant to be cut down by death just yet, it is disruptive, please understand, dear.”
“I understand, Lyon, I will find a way to cease this madness.” Eirika said, sucking in a breath to sound braver than she was.
“Excellent.” Lyon agreed and in a smog of shadow and dust, Eirika was left alone.
She gazed out across the sky and she felt so, so small before the might of humankind and even all the universe. She had never felt that way before. She was a goddess, after all. So, she found herself seeking the counsel of someone whom she could always trust: her twin brother.
Time was of the essence but Ephraim appeared on her cross path eventually. She hailed out to him and he halted his horses. They whinnied and whined but with Ephraim’s expert command, they stopped and he dismounted from behind the guard of his chariot.
“Unexpected to see you this soon, sister.” Ephraim greeted her.
“I need a little of your help.” Eirika confessed, fidgeting. “I have never had a follower kill in my name, let alone slaughter. I have been told to end him but I do not believe myself to be up to the task alone.”
Ephraim stroked his chin thoughtfully, “I am informed of the situation and believe it is yours and yours alone, little sister.”
“I have never taken up arms against anyone,” Eirika said, “I am not like you brother. I am not a warrior. I am a lover, not a fighter.”
“Then perhaps you ought to use that to your advantage. Fight with words, rather than weapons.” Ephraim said then sighed. “With that, I must dismiss you. As you cannot prolong the night, neither can I prolong the day.”
“I understand, rest well later, Ephraim.” Eirika told him.
She watched as he and his horses left her. She watched the sparks and embers in his trail, they were beautiful but in the right temperature, could ignite the very crops that he was meant to rear. Eirika wondered if the indulgent blessing she had given away so recklessly a few years ago was the same. Her heart wrenched and sure enough, the killing prayers had begun again and her offerings were in the form of heads cleaved from necks rather than trimmed hollyhocks or similar.
It brought her to her knees with indecision and powerlessness. Eirika, a goddess, was left snivelling and sobbing in the wake of the murder in her name. She hadn’t a faintest clue how gods of war and death endured or if it felt different to them.
Desiring nothing more than to at least end her own suffering, let alone the grief of the loved ones of those who had been killed in her name, Eirika found her courage. She would find her own way to fight against this follower of hers. Eirika took a deep, heaving breath and her gloved fists strengthened. She tried to lift herself up but she was struck once more by the sensation of a piercing lance but she endured the pain as innocents were killed in her name. She vanished from the edge of the world where she had met her brother.
Reappearing in a scourged field, Eirika stood, uncertain and she gazed out past the fallen, slaughtered bodies. This may have been a village once and it was as though war had razed it but she only saw the silhouette of one man and his lance in his hand. The one man who had caused this tragedy and his weapon of choice.
Valter twitched. He could sense a cool change in the dusk. His movements were unnatural as he lumbered around, enthralled, that he appeared to be in the presence of someone more than loyalty. Eirika steeled herself. His gaunt face split into a manic grin. A lust for life, a lust for blood, and worst of all: a lust for her, Eirika sensed from it.
“Eirika, my goddess, you recall me?” he asked as he began to amble forward, tired by his slaughter, using his lance as a cane to hobble with, and yet enthused by Eirika’s reappearance before her.
In front of her, he laid down his weapon, overjoyed that his prayers had finally been heard, it seemed. He took her hand and smothered her knuckles with kisses. Eirika remained akin to marble, just a statue, glaring yet neutral. Valter’s passion disgusted her but what really made Eirika tremble was the realisation that he still bore her blessing upon his forehead. It shone like a beacon, completely unmarred from the passage of time, unmarred by the splatter of blood, completely unlike the rest of his face.
“Yes, I remember you, the child that I assisted.” Eirika replied gravely.
Valter lifted his head and Eirika saw a jaundice to his eyes, they were wide, “I was worried my prayers were eluding you, I am nothing but devoted to you, my goddess, your attention is all that I desire.”
“They have been heard, Valter,” Eirika said, firm, “and they must stop.”
Her proclamation shocked Valter to stone. He blinked. He behaved as though he could not fathom her words.
“This killing in my name must stop.” Eirika continued, her voice getting louder now.
Both of them were distraught but somehow, Valter was more so. He gawked, on the brink of anger. His one-sided love betrayed.
“I will do anything to bring a stop to your murder.” Eirika told him.
“Anything?” Valter echoed and disbelief gave way upon his rugged face to something conniving. It made Eirika’s skin crawl.
“Yes, anything, so long as it is within the boundaries of my domain.” Eirika replied, sheepish, already regretting her words but she hoped that so long as his request was per her own magic, then she would be true to her own word yet she dreaded Valter’s reply.
He took a moment to peruse his words and gather what his anything would be but his teeth glinted, “I have my request.”
“Let’s hear it.” Eirika replied, bravely, keeping her chin up even though she dreaded what was about to come from Valter’s mouth.
“I want power.” Valter said. “Power of the gods.”
“I must deny that, I can give you no such thing.” Eirika replied and she tried to step away from Valter but he grabbed her hand.
Eirika’s heart could have jumped from her chest but instead, it sank. Valter came down to his knee, still holding her hand and Eirika realised what he was asking for her.
“I could share in your power, as your husband.” Valter said. “Have me as your mortal lover…”
“But make you a god.” Eirika finished his sentence for him.
He was perversely delighted, clearly thinking it a good omen of her marriage for her to do that. Eirika swallowed a lump in her chest and her expression remained firm. Brave. She took a breath.
“For a dowry, you will receive power over the dark, the home of the night sky and moon, but for the engagement, you will relinquish your killing. Those are our vows.” Eirika scowled.
“As you wish,” Valter replied, his voice a sick caress, “my love.”
Valter kissed Eirika’s hand once more. Just once. And there was a swell of power. The transfer of part of Eirika’s domain into another. She kept herself strong through it as she felt part of her power diminish and was eaten up by Valter.
“You are now Valter, God of the Dark.” Eirika christened him and she could feel a shift in the balance of nature and aether but she didn’t think she was going to be scolded for it.
This shift recontextualised itself and Eirika could feel the new presence of the dark. Not as a time of rest and solace, but as something that could have horrible dangers lurking in. An old fear, from before her time and birth as a goddess, revived and revitalised because of the birth of the new god before her, at her feet.
“Come, Valter, we must make haste. The night must begin, it must go on.” Eirika told him, hurried him.
Valter slowly got up and smiled eerily, “With pleasure.” he replied.
Though she wanted to be let go, Eirika instead took Valter’s hand. To turn the moon, to blanket the world in darkness and sleep, soothed by the gentle light of the moon… unfortunately he now had a place in this as a newlywed dance, no matter how unnerving.
Valter was sharply keen to assist. His hand was large against Eirika’s and despite being defined by her dualism with her brother, she had never danced with a partner before. His hands were stony and so were his movements, he was a warrior, not a dancer, Eirika quickly realised.
He trod on her toes, cracking the glass slippers her feet were adorned with but he was an eager partner, if anything else. Eager but inadequate, he took charge. They danced but it was not the dance that Eirika, or the world, had once known so effortlessly, so innately. As such, the moon was partially enshrouded in a shadow that had never been there before.
Thus, for the first time in all the history so far of creation, earthly and heavenly, the moon began to wane. A shade of darkness, her possessive husband, hid the moon’s face as she tried to dance as usual, beginning a new lunar cycle the world had not seen before but would come to know ever after.

And uncle Zhao respects tree guy's wish to keep the wangjis. Is he genuinely a nice guy or just worried about everybody around, including Baby Xu and Smirky Xing and the kid?
Ooooh, super pretty scenery. Why can't we all live in places like that?
Tumblr media
Wheee, they get to feast with the family. And Smirky Xing is reciting poetry again. Everybody likes him it seems.
LOL, Smirky Xing is trying to feed Baby Xu. Who must get headaches from all the eye rolling.
Yo, what's up with tree undies master guy, why is he coughing?
Wait, are the little Wangjis also the kids of some 5 lakes brother? (Sorry, random thoughts about how things piece together, and lots of confusion)
Somebody's shouting for help. What's happening?
Young leader of something something, it was gone too fast. He'll be called magenta leader guy, if he ends up important. Ah, wait, he's from Broken Sword Manor. Have we been there before? I forgot.
Oh and he's chased by a ghost. And there's the smiley potato things flying in again. So the red masked ghost gang?
Oh, okay both magenta leader of broken sword manor guy and tree undies master guy vanish in the fog.
Pleated skirt soldier boss guy acts like an ass around the kid, encouraging him to drink along while drunk himself. What a jerk.
Uncle Zhao saves him and sends both to bed - individually i mean, obviously - , and seems genuinely nice, but I don't trust him still.
Whoa, pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy is awake and just pretended! Even more of a jerk. What is he up to?
Oh, Baby Xu spots him and follows. Thank goodness, somebody needs to keep an eye on the mean guys.
There's some masked dark figure fighting with pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy.
Something is going on at the main gate, and everybody runs there. Except maybe Smirky Xing, he's just cautious in general.
Oh no, somebody hung tree undies master guy outside the main gate. And it's raining smiley potatoes. Baby Xu is watching and they're all suspecting some happy ghost, because there's a batman-joker smile carved into the dead guys' faces. And happy ghost is apparently one of the masked ghost gang, which makes sense, because of the potato smiley paper crafts.
Tumblr media
Oh, now they're worried about the kid. Was it a trap?
No, he's with Smirky Xing and Baby Xu. How did Baby Xu get back there so fast?
Okay, Smirky Xing says some masked ghost guys were going after the kid but were bad fighters and he instantly chased them away. But can that be trusted? If he himself is nuts guy, they wouldn't fight him, would they? But then again... if he were one of them, why would he spare the kid? None of this makes sense.
Okay, magenta leader guy isn't dead yet. He's in some bed, and somebody is lying in bed with him. Some woman. Who is she? Oh, she says she's a ghost. Wait, does he know her? So has she REALLY died, like a dead ghost, not one of those living ghosts?
Dude, stop begging, if she IS a ghost, she's not gonna let you go, you fool.
Oh, ghost girl channels her inner Arya Stark and drops her face for effect.
Tumblr media
And magenta leader guy faints like a good damsel in distress.
Wait, she has a face again, but a different one (I think, not entirely sure) and she's one of the ten devils of ghost valley. A beauty ghost. Yeah, she's really pretty alright. And she's got a ton of friends with her.
Okay, what are they going to do with the unconscious guy? Kill him? They're just sharing make-up tips so far.
Baby Xu is trying to say goodbye to the kid. Aww, but the kid is gonna miss his dads. :(
There's a  flashback to some kid crying. There was also a name but I have no idea who he is. Was it Baby Xu?
Baby Xu sees a rooftop and flies up, I have no idea why. Was there something suspcious about the building? Huh?
Oh, somebody's pissed because their glazed armor got stolen. Ah it's pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy and uncle Zhao who's not pissed just sad. Ohhh, so the ghost guys just wanted to steal the glazed armor and anything else was a decoy. I see.
Ahhhh, Baby Xu is on top of the roof, removing the tiles and listening in on their conversation, right when they say no outsider could know anything. Wow, they sure have a foolproof system.
Ok, 5 brothers of 5 lakes kept the 5 pieces of glazed armor? That does make sense.
Wait, why is nobody confused about pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy being awake and sober all of a sudden????? Had uncle Zhao known that he was only pretending?
Man, that guy is made of pure anger and insults. If he dies at some point, he's probably gonna explode like a pinata hit by a dozen sticks at once, just because all the anger needs to get out first.
Ok, mad respect for uncle Zhao, because he is indeed a good guy it seems. He is capable of feeling guilt, and he doesn't want anything to do with the glazed armor anyway.
Okay, pleated skirt soldier boss jerk guy from now on will be called a-hole guy. Because, if the shoe fits...
BabyXu sees Smirky Xing flying away and is confused as to how he could also eavesdrop without being noticed by Baby Xu. I mean, that was Smirky Xing, wasn't it?
Oh, smirklord flying over the tree tops.
Yeah, Baby Xu, I wanna know too what Smirky Xing is up to.
Aww, "our little cheng ling". Smirky Xing is already feeling their dad status.
Oooooooh, Smirky Xing saved Baby Xu from the spiderweb wire stuff.
Tumblr media
Okay, some ghost talk, I have no clue what's going on. lol
I'm focusing on the important details. Like Smirky Xing fishing for info on Baby Xu's virginity.
Wait, who's bleeding from above?
Ah, there's the sleeve cutting. Yes. Nice.
Tumblr media
Oh the dead guy in the tree is the son of uncle Zhao? Wait, was he fighting with the dark masked guy? Not a-hole guy? Did I get them confused? I am so unable to understand anything, lol. I hate being faceblind. Somebody please let me know in the comments who did what while the manor was under attack.
Okay, dark masked guy's face is also shown and Bab Xu drops a name. I have no idea who that was, nor do I recognize the face. I'm so bad at this. Help?
WTH is "iron hook"??? Is that some special martial arts technique that only a few people can do?
Now they're speaking in riddles about animals. Owls, cicadas, yellow sparrows, praying mantisses. I have no idea what's happening. But it seems to be some sort of flirting.
Ok, now Smirky Xing says he's afraid of ghosts. I'm not sure if I believe that. He’s kinda looking a lot like nuts guy, after all, who is part of the ghost gang himself.
Oh, sure. When you're afraid of ghosts and more people dying... just go into the coffin house, because that makes so much sense.
Tumblr media
Ooooh, Baby Xu saved Smirky Xing from the spider web stuff this time. Niiiiice.
Aww, they're asking each other who they are. So... does that mean Baby Xu is interested after all? Hehe
Smirky Xing answers that he's a good person. Yeah, like that's not the exact thing a bad guy would say. Not suspicious at all.
Why are there paper animals all over the place anyway? Can anybody tell me?
Also, who lit the incense sticks?
Why are they splitting up? That's how you end up dead in a horror movie, wth???
Wait, what? That's Smirky Xing's dad? His dad looks the same age as him? Is he hallucinating?
Whoa, why is it day time? Ohhh, blurred vision. Definitely something shady going on.
Baby Xu is hallucinating people too, I think. Leader of Four Season's Manor. Is that his dad? Zi Shu, wait, was that Baby Xu's real name?
Anyway, dad guy is doing an Anna impression and asking Elsa Xu to build a snowman.
Oh, Baby Xu saw through the hallucination. Got out of it by cutting himself. He really is into pain, isn't he?
Eww, zombie guys. What did I say about horror movies? But, nice make-up!
Tumblr media
Oh no, Smirky Xing is still stuck in the visions.
And, more fabric is cut off. Baby Xu really doesn't like blood. Smirky Xing was not wrong.
HOLY SHIT! Smirky Xing called Baby Xu by his real name while hallucinating. So they DO know each other!!! :O
And THAT'S when they end the episode??? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
Gah!!!!!
Okay, okay. I'm calm.
So, what have I learned: 5 lakes alliance can't be trusted. A-hole guy is a complete jerk. AND SMIRKY XING KNEW BABY XU WHEN HE WAS A KID!!! Also, side note, I miss my purple queen :(
Goals for the next episodes: Find out how they know each other!!! Also, why doesn't Baby Xu recognize Smirky Xing? Is he also disguised? I still need to work on the name chart thing, because there's new characters showing up in every episode and I'm so lost.

desperate as that sounds
Five times Ryuji ran for Akira (and one time he ran for himself.)
—
read on ao3 or below the cut :)
It’s 4:45 am with the weather sitting at a brutal -3 degrees when Ryuji really starts wishing that he brought another jacket.
People are lined around Akihabara by the hundreds outside of closed electronic stores, and the sun has yet to even rise. Some people are yawning, some are clutching their rapidly cooling coffee in a death grip, and most have dark, purple bags underneath their eyes—proof of the battle scars that they’ve acquired. Every person here had the same goal in mind: To get what they need and get out as quick as possible.
As it turns out, if everyone has that same mindset, it creates the violent, yearly November tradition that is Black Friday.
Glancing around, he notices that people came in packs, teams. Teenagers and pre-pubescent kids are all scuffling around, hyping themselves up and creating strategies for the war to come. The more seasoned veterans of the yearly massacre came in pairs—the smaller the group, the faster you move, the move land you cover.
At the biggest electronic store in a region that’s already been nicknamed ‘Electronic Town,’ he is fourth in line—an impressive feat, especially for a first-timer. But it came with a heavy toll: he is completely and utterly alone.
”Skull, do you read me?”
Well, physically alone, anyway.
“Loud and clear,” he replies, readjusting the mic in his ear. “Not that I mind, but what’s with the codenames?”
Futaba scoffs. “You think Black Friday is just about the physical aspect? Foolish boy—the psychological aspects are half the battle. If I get you into the mindset that we’re in a Palace, then you’ll get into infiltration mode, and you’ll be OP compared to the nerds out there.”
“Ooo, I like it! Your brain is effin’ galaxy sized!”
“I do what I can for my faithful pack mule.”
“I’ll try not to take that personally.”
His deal with Futaba had been a simple one. She helps Ryuji navigate the horrors of Akihabara during Black Friday in exchange that he acts as what is essentially a drug trafficker sans the drugs. Despite her rigorous societal training she’d undergone with the Thieves, something about entering a borderline stampede still seems somewhat unappealing to her. Besides, he doesn’t mind. He’d always wanted to do something nice for Futaba anyway, and the store that has her computer thing is the same store that holds what he needs.
”Five minutes to go,” her voice crackles into his ear. ”Infiltration route—go!”
Their deal had also come in with an intense tutorial session that ended up lasting until one in the morning. “Floor 4, down 3 aisles, 8 steps in, turn right, second shelf, grab a box that says ‘GTX graphics card.’ Pink, if possible.”
“A+, Skull! You know, if you can memorize that, I seriously don’t get why you’re failing English verbs.”
“Please, this is actually important.”
Futaba cackles. “Now you’re speaking my language. With your legs and my navigation, this’ll basically be a Tuesday afternoon in Leblanc.”
People around him are starting to straighten up, some going as far as to remove the extra layer of clothing and shoving it in backpacks for maximum speed and minimum restrictions. “Damn, people here look more intense than some dudes in my track meets.”
“If you’re throwing out portable chargers with 30-hour battery life for only 800 yen, you’d be a little intense too.”
Ryuji scoffs and begins to stretch, being extra sure to get his right thigh. “I’m plenty intense. Just last Saturday, I almost beat the Big Bang Burger challenge.”
“Pretty sure Akira beat that on his second week in Tokyo. You know, you still haven’t told me why you’re bothering with this whole Black Friday mess. I didn’t peg you for an electronics type of guy, and your phone is as crappy as your posture.”
“Rude! But I can’t argue with that.” He starts to run in place, and for a brief second, he wonders if he should’ve packed a protein shake.
“Well, too late now. If your thing sells out because you didn’t want to give your Navi information, that’s on you.”
“Gimme some credit, Futaba,” an employee who looks equal parts sleep-deprived and terrified approaches the glass doors. “Ain’t no way in hell I’m failing either of us this morning.”
The glass slides open, and as if sunlight was released from the captivity of the clouds, or perhaps a meteor just broke through the earth’s atmosphere, the people start pushing, shoving, and flooding inside. The crowd looked both impenetrable and unwavering; an unstoppable force and an immovable object rolled into one giant stream of desperate shoppers.
Ryuji spares a split-second to crack his neck. Mission Start.
The moment he breaks through the initial threshold, people who were only one step behind him suddenly became ten, twenty, thirty. Weaving through crowds and aisles with the precision of a seamstress, Ryuji evades it all with ease.
”Skull, status report.”
“Smooth sailing, Oracle!” He ducks as an overly buff businessman turns around with a 3-metre pole used for studio lighting threatens to bash his head in. “You’re totally right about the codenames, by the way. It’s almost like I’ve got Captain with me.”
“Right?” She laughs. “It’s all about the mindset.”
Ryuji turns, and finally gets to the stairs—the most brutal section and the biggest gamble. It’s the reason why it was essential that he’s one of the first in line. Once the stairs get jammed with people, it’s game over. Making a mad dash up four flights of stars, he thanks any God that may be that Palaces are fantastic for rehab.
He makes it to the top, panting. It’s empty, save for a few nervous-looking employees. He hopes the smile he throws their way came off as ‘pleasant and grateful for their service’ rather than ‘a delinquent asshole who might steal loads of shit.’
“Down 3 aisles, 8 steps,” he mutters to himself as he quickly scans the fourth floor. “Turn right, second shelf,” eyes landing on his target, he grins. “I effin’ rock.”
”You got it?”
“Of course I did!” He fist pumps before swiping the box. In his excitement, he nearly runs over to give a random employee a high-five. “Alright Oracle, you’re up.”
”I love you so much in a non-weird way. Okay,” he hears the clacking of keys on the other side of the mic. “What do you need?”
“Two words: game console.”
The clacking stops. “You’re joking.”
Ryuji snorts. “I ain’t waking up at 3 in the morning for a joke.”
”Those are hard enough to get as is, and on a day like this—”
“So you can’t do it?”
In the same way every one of the thieves know they could bait Ryuji with a few choice words, it’s a lesser-known fact that Futaba is quite nearly as bad when it comes to open defiance. “Jerk. Of course I can.”
“Then let’s do it!”
“Ugh, fine!” The clacking resumes, more vigorously. “Yikes, only 3 left. Make it quick!”
“Got it,” he replies. He turns around and his stomach drops as he sees people rushing in. “What floor?”
“Third.”
Ryuji groans. The stairs, with people packed in like sardines, are a circus. It would take at least two minutes to try and go down a single flight of stairs. The elevator is even worse, and he honestly wouldn’t be surprised if it had already started to malfunction. Only one choice, then.
He takes a deep breath. “Pray for me.”
”Godspeed, soldier.”
Ryuji, like a wild animal on the loose in the streets of Tokyo, jumps on the handrails and begins his descent that way, begging to the skies that he doesn’t slip and create a domino effect that knocks down a dozen people.
In thirty seconds flat (with no small amount of cursing from both the customers and himself) he jumps off and lands (tumbles) onto the third floor, grinning triumphantly. Eat your heart out, Sumire.
“Oracle, I’m here. Almost broke my ankles. Where to?”
”Straight ahead,” she replies. ”Only one left, though. Better make it quick.”
His eyes land on the last game console, and he sees someone making their way towards it. “Not a problem.”
Ryuji sprints.
Throwing every societal rule and common courtesy into the air, he makes a mad dash and, somehow, miraculously does not bump into anyone or knock down any huge shelves.
In approximately 3 seconds, he grabs his treasure and yells a very loud but completely genuine “sorry!” over his shoulder as he half runs back to the stairs, face red for multiple reasons.
Delving back into the sea of the crowd, trying to navigate himself to the cash register, he sighs. “I’m going to hell.”
”Mission success, then?”
“I had to steal it from some guy! I feel so bad. What if he’s like, buying it for his long lost son or something?”
”Whatever! That’s just part of the Black Friday spirit. Congrats! At least you finally got a game console.”
“Huh? Oh, I already had one.”
Static crinkles in his ear, before, ”WHAT!?”
“Ow! Don’t yell!”
”You already had one and you still did this shopping run?”
“Yeah…?”
”Why?! Are you gonna sell it? Are you one of those sleazy men who take advantage of the good will of gamers, Sakamoto?”
“Hell no!”
”So—“
“Oops, almost at the front of the cash register. I’ll drop off the goods at Akira’s. Talk to you later, shortie.”
Click.
”Wha— Hey! Ryuji!” Silence. “Ugh!”
————
After a much-deserved nap, Futaba climbs up the stairs to Akira’s attic.
“The star has arrived!” she says in lieu of a greeting. “Where’s Ryuji?”
“He left,” Akira answers. He’s looking at something on his worktable. “Your stuff is on the bed.”
Futaba whoops and snatches up the little plastic bag. Peering inside, she sees an adorable GTX hot pink graphics card, and a note. In a horrific scrawl, it writes: dont tell him plz ;)))
She looks up quizzically when her eyes land on Akira’s desk: A shiny new game console.
“Um…”
“Hmm?” he looks up. “Oh, Ryuji dropped it off. Said his mom won it at work, and since he already had one, he gave it to me. Nice, right?”
She opens her mouth, before closing it with a clack. Just two weeks ago, Ryuji had asked Akira in the group chat if they could play video games at his place. Sometimes, it’s easy to forget about Akira’s situation: false accusation, an attic for a room, no definitive meals, not even a proper bathroom in the building, but Akira plays it off like it’s easy. He answered by making a joke that he’s too poor for something like that when you can buy faux battle axes and realistic shotguns instead. Everyone had forgotten about that interaction.
But apparently, Ryuji hadn’t.
He’s an idiot, Futaba thinks. To which boy she’s referring to, she’s not sure.
“Yeah,” is what she says instead. “It’s nice.”
====
The dust motes flying around the attic of Leblanc are lovely. Swirling in senseless formations, floating through the still air like snow. The way none of them collide with each other, as if they have some sort of motion detector that tells them to move out of the way. It’s pleasing to look at.
It’s a shame Ryuji doesn’t give a single shit about them at this moment.
He’s sitting on Akira’s bed, back pressed against the window sill with his hair tipped up, staring unfocused at the wooden beams, eyes glazed over. He’s been like this for the better part of the day, and now the evening is slipping by him. Time continues ticking on like a rigged bomb; an ongoing reminder of how many seconds he’s losing, and how much more he can lose.
He’s considered moving. To walk around the room, shift the dust that’s surely settled on him. Getting up, stretching his legs, outwardly expelling some of his trapped, balled up energy is a good idea. Healthy, even, if those shitty YouTube videos he’s watched on his phone about anger management were on to something. But he can’t. He shouldn’t.
Amidst all the uncertainty and the wound-up anxiety that has currently made permanent residence deep inside his core, he knows that if lets his joints unlock, he’s going to fucking lose it.
Slam a fist inside the dry wood, tear up a blanket, throw the adorable ramen bowl he gave Akira against the wall until it shatters into a hundred pieces. He’s so terrified of ruining this room that he won’t even give himself the option. And Ryuji would rather let hell freeze over than scare Futaba again in his fit of fucked-up rage that comes with the package that is Sakamoto Ryuji.
So he’s stuck on the bed for God knows how long.
Footsteps come up, and he doesn’t need to look down to know who’s going to chew him out. If it’s not Akira that’s going to chide him out of his stupor (which it isn’t, even though Ryuji would do anything if it means that Akira’s back here with them), then they’d send in someone who’d drag him out of it with her nails perfectly manicured.
“You look terrible.”
“Screw off,” Ryuji spits automatically, and he cringes inwardly. Ann doesn’t deserve the sharp end of his horrible mood. It’s not her fault that it feels like his insides feel like they’re trying to eat their way out.
She ignores him and moves to hop on top of the old work desk. The wood creaks underneath her. “You’ve been here all day.”
“I know.”
“Did you sleep last night?”
“Yes. No.” He feels Ann’s stare burn into the side of his face—a ghost of Carmen’s presence. “I don’t know.”
“He wouldn’t want to see you like this.”
Irritation swells in him. She’s never learned to take a hint in her life. “Really? Are you seriously saying that?”
“Are you saying he would?”
“I’m saying he’s too busy having the living shit beat out of him to see me like this.”
His body twitches, and that’s all he needed for his resolve to break down. He jumps from the bed, feet landing heavily enough that he’s sure they can all hear him from the floor below. Unconsciously, his feet pace around the small room; quick with agitation but heavy with dread. Anything to distract from doing something stupid.
“You’re worried about me, what, not sleeping? For lying down on this damn bed for too long? Screw that. Akira’s being grilled like cheap meat for the past couple of days and you’re expecting me to act normal about it? That’s bullshit.”
Bad. This is bad. His fingers are already curling in his fists, eager and all too willing to be used. He settles for balling the edge of his shirt instead.
“He isn’t here. That’s the fact, isn’t it? And what the fuck am I doing about it? Freaking out? Trying not to throw a tantrum about it like some kind of stupid kid? Am I really this messed in the head that everyone on the team is—-is hiding from me like I’m some kind of—” he cuts himself off.
Delinquent.
Ryuji takes a deep breath, fully inhaling and slowly exhaling. He focuses on the dust motes again. In and out. Countdown from ten. He can do this. He can get a grip on himself. Thank God it was Ann that came up—if it had been anyone else, he doesn’t think he can put his pride aside as easily. (Unless it was Futaba. God, he loves her so much.)
For a while, it was silent except for his breathing; it stuttered occasionally, but eventually it evens out. Ann only watches from her perch.
When he feels stable enough, Ryuji drops to sit on the hardwood.
“Okay?” she asks. Ann never babies him when he gets like this—she’s good that way.
“Okay.” And he really is. Not completely, of course not. His nerves weren’t strung as tight, but he still feels a heavy weight right in his stomach.
She hops off the desk and goes to sit in front of him on the floor. Crossing her legs, Ann waits. They regard each other for a long minute.
“He’s the toughest guy I’ve ever met,” he says. It feels weird saying this out loud, instead of repeating the mantra in his head like a broken record. “If anyone can handle this, it’s Akira.”
She rolls her eyes. “Duh.”
“He’s going to be okay.”
“I know that.”
“Sooner than later, his dumb ass is going to be walking through the door downstairs.”
“You bet he is.”
“And I get to yell at him as much as I want.”
“Get in line.”
“I’m not going to lose him tonight.”
Ann reaches over—slowly, giving him plenty of room to shift away—and places a hand on his knee. “You’re not going to lose him tonight.”
Ryuji laughs, a little breathy but still genuine. He prods at her hand. “When’d you get so good with me, Takamaki?”
“I do the Lord’s work around here, free of charge.” She grins, before her tone drops again. “Can you do something for me, though?”
“Lay it on me.”
Ann pulls back and leans on a propped hand, her blue eyes piercing. “When Akira comes back, and he will—”
“And he will. No doubt about it.”
“Obviously. He’s the best person for this. But when Akira comes back, he’s…” Ann gnaws on the inside of her cheek. “He’s not going to be okay, Ryuji.”
Somewhere in his mind, he already knew what she was going to say. While the biggest of his worries is that he’d never see Akira walk through the doors of Leblanc again, there was a quieter fear. A very specific fear, one that Ryuji knows all too well. Because stories don’t just end at the climax of a single event—they keep going. It’s the fear of what happens once he does see Akira.
The aftermath.
The bell chimes downstairs.
His heart lurches, and he makes the briefest of eye contact with Ann before he’s gone.
He’s the toughest guy I’ve ever met.
It’s like his feet have a mind of their own.
If anyone can handle this, it’s Akira.
In an instant, he’s scrambling towards the stairs on all fours before pushing himself up.
Sooner than later, his dumbass is going to be walking through the door downstairs.
His hand finds its hold on the old wooden railing as he sprints his way down. More than once, he almost trips and bangs his head into the wall.
And I get to yell at him as much as I want.
Rounding the corner, he jumps on the landing, ignoring the sharp pain that shoots up his thigh. He ignores the stares from everyone else. Looking up his breath catches in his throat. Gray eyes meet his brown ones. He takes one step forward, and then another. And then he sprints the rest.
He’s going to be okay.
Ryuji stops himself right in front of him, an arms-length away. Akira’s face looked like it’s been through hell and back. Split lip, black eye, bruised cheekbone. An intense fury flares up his spine when he sees the grime and dirt up along his temple.
He hesitates.
As much as he wants to reach forward, close the gap, to make sure that this boy that he can’t afford to lose is real… he can’t do it.
Because he knows what would happen if he tries to cross a boundary that isn’t ready to be crossed—he might not be ready. Ryuji could hurt him by touching any injuries he doesn’t know about (God, how much more is he hiding in there? He’s this close to either throwing up or throwing a punch). But what he’s most scared about, what he’s terrified of doing, is touching Akira in the state of mind he’s in right now. For someone to grip him, grab him, even just brush past him right now, it might be too much. Judging by how beat up he looks just from his face? That does shit to people. That changes you.
Ryuji would know. So he keeps his distance.
Akira’s eyes turn dark, and for a second, Ryuji is terrified that he must’ve overstepped a boundary.
Then he throws his arms around Ryuji, the force knocking them both back by a couple of steps.
“Akira?” he asks, bewildered. Never in their friendship has he seen Akira act like this. It sends alarm bells ringing through his head. “What—”
“Don’t,” Akira cuts off, voice hoarse and quiet, so quiet that even this close, Ryuji is straining to hear him. The arms around him tighten. “Don’t be like that. Please. I can’t. Not right now, Ryuji.”
It hits him all at once. And in his sixteen years of living, Ryuji doesn’t think he’s ever been stupider.
Akira’s been trapped in an interrogation room with nothing but a bunch of make-believe police officers. He got the shit beat out of him, had to stage his own suicide.
And Ryuji just tried to push him away.
He lets his arms wrap around Akira tightly; not too tight, but enough to make sure he won’t slip away from him again. (Never again. Not if he can help it.)
“I’m glad you’re back,” he whispers. Tilting his head up, he stares at the soft lighting of Leblanc, forcing his lungs to breathe evenly—not for fear of losing his temper, but for fear of exposing the tears silently streaming down his face. “So fucking glad.”
Akira doesn’t answer. He only buries his face deeper into Ryuji’s shoulder.
Ann was right—Akira isn’t okay. Not for now, not for awhile. It’s up to Ryuji and everyone else in their group of friends to fix that. That’s fine. They’ll all take as long as they need. He isn’t okay right now, but he will be. They can work on that.
But one thing was clear.
I’m not going to lose him tonight.
====
Summer in Mementos is pretty gross.
Granted, it’s always nasty in here—there’s a perpetual air of moisture, like the inside of a whale, if Ryuji had ever been in one (he’s basing that off of an American movie Ann showed them last week; he didn’t even know it was possible for a fish to get lost in the ocean). There’s also the ongoing sound of trains passing by them on loop, and to him, trains are just inherently cramped and humid and always too sticky for his liking.
Of course, there’s the disgusting, weird amalgamated Shadows that litter every level of Mementos. At least in Palaces they sort of resemble something from the real world, but he guesses they didn’t even bother with these ones. The worst part of all this is that right now, it’s hot, but not hot enough for the Shadows to process a heat wave.
So essentially, they’re fighting with additional bucket loads of sweat, but with none of the usual reward that comes with it.
Well, not that they needed it.
“Fox.”
“As you wish.”
Yusuke’s boots skid to a halt as he points his katana at the fast-moving Shadow, the tip perfectly still. “Your assistance, Goemon.”
They’re on their weekly Mementos grind, the list Mishima keeps updating finally too long to ignore. (Akira hates it when things pile up. It’s a big reason why Ryuji hastily cleaned up every time he wanted to come over. Now though, he doesn’t even bother.)
The current All-Star team includes Yusuke, Makoto, Ryuji, and Akira, with the rest of them keeping a close eye in case they need a quick shift in strategy.
From his katana, black ice crawls in the ground beneath rusted train tracks, the air suddenly chilly despite the humidity that was there a moment ago. Frost shoots forward, encasing the legs of the Shadow only to shatter with a strong jerk forward. It roars, the ear-piercing sound causing the scattered debris around them to vibrate. Akira clicks his tongue.
Strong against ice. Easy fix. Ryuji mouths the words along with Akira when he says, “Panther, you’re up.”
“Finally!”
Ann darts in, high-fiving Yusuke as he rushes out. Ryuji can see Makoto pat Yusuke on the back, sympathy etched on her expression and Futaba mussing his hair. He always took it the hardest when he had to be switched out.
Akira’s gloved fingers brush the edge of his monochrome mask. “Come, Principality.”
As if a human version of justice has been summoned down to earth, the winged statue floats for a moment, eyes filled with scorn as she casts a simple, yet effective memory loss spell. The Shadow shakes its head aggressively. It works, but it won’t hold for long.
“Skull.”
“Don’t mind if I do!”
He grins and sprints right, squeezing into the Shadow’s blindside. It tries to twist around to take a swipe at him, but Ryuji is too fast—he slides right between its legs to confuse and disorient it. Once it seems like it completely lost sight of him, he raises his hand to grip the edge of his black mask. “Come on out, Captain!”
It’s a classic tactic; make the enemy lose focus, stun it, and stop it.
A pirate straight out of the Caribbean materializes from the embers of his mask—Captain Kidd in all of his glory regards the Shadow with a look of disdain before sparks fly from the hull of his ship, and an intense streak of lightning bursts forth, shocking its target like something from a regrettable movie about torture, knocking it down to the ground, a buzz perceptible even from here. He might have overdone it.
Ann whistles. “You didn’t even let me get a chance with it.”
“You can have the next million Shadows we bump into, I promise.” He calls Captain back into his mask, fragmented pieces forming together impossibly quick. “We good, Leader?”
Akira nods. “Just let me get the loot,” he smiles at Ryuji. “Awesome voltage on that last one, Skull.”
A grin stretches over his face before he can stop himself. He won’t deny it—getting a compliment from Joker was always something he filed away for later.
He’s too busy feeling pride surge through him that he can’t even bother to get ticked off when he hears Morgana scoff. “It doesn’t matter how good that attack was; he got in the way of Lady Panther’s finishing blow. That’s a crime in my eyes.”
“But doesn’t that just mean he saved her from doing anything?” Makoto raises an eyebrow. “Technically, he prevented any danger from befalling her, right?”
“Queen, as a gentleman, I have an obligation to tell you that that is a sexist notion.”
“You did not just say that.”
Something makes Ryuji pause. Immediately, his eyes flicker around them automatically. He tunes their chattering out, and finds himself tapping his foot, a slight jitter overcoming him. His nerves are trying to tell him something. Or maybe he’s imagining it? Is it just an aftershock from the intense lightning he cast out? No. It’s been too long since he’s had any problem with electric moves, and he’s never had problems from ones that he threw out himself.
Something was wrong, and he can’t put his finger on it.
He rattles his brain trying to figure out what it is. No one’s hurt, everyone’s safe and together. Well, mostly together, since Akira’s still approaching the Shadow—
A cold sweat drapes the back of his neck. Akira is still approaching the Shadow.
The Shadow hasn’t disintegrated yet.
“Akira—!”
The name slips past his lips, codenames forgotten. In slow motion, Ryuji sees Shadow’s body tense, its mouth frothing with what looks like liquid magma made from pits of hell—specializes in curse, and a strong one at that; Ryuji can feel the potency of its malignancy from where he’s standing. He watches as Akira stiffens, fingers twitching towards his mask, ready to retaliate, or at the very least, defend. And like a domino effect of bad luck, Ryuji feels bile rise to his throat.
Akira is good at what he does. Infuriatingly good. Took the whole Metaverse bullshit like a fish to water. But even he can’t switch Personas the same moment he summons them.
Principality would crumple like tissue paper against the Shadow. And Akira along with it.
You’re too late, a voice whispers in his head. You wouldn’t make it.
A heartbeat passes. And then Ryuji is flying.
It’s never too late, screams back something stronger, something unshakeable. Not ever. Especially not for him.
His boots hit the ground like the first strike of lightning amidst a storm—impossibly fast and unexpected. Lungs wheezing and legs throbbing, he crossed the distance in the span of a breath.
The Shadow throws the curse at Akira, red and black and filled to the brim with intensity, and Akira’s eyes can only widen, pupils dilated wildly to the point where there’s only black—a mirror of what’s about to hit him if Ryuji isn’t fast enough.
He doesn’t hesitate.
Ryuji shoves Akira, hard enough that he crashes onto the ground and he can hear the breath forcefully leave his lungs, and suddenly Ryuji can’t hear anything at all. His fingertips are fire and ice, his sense of surroundings have completely dissipated. Any energy in his body is being drained, like a dam cracked into millions of pieces—and all he’s left with is air. Vaguely, he can hear a choking noise, a broken sort of sound.
The blow is not just a violent one—it never is, with curse attacks. Instead of just feeling his skin bruised or blood running down his temple, he also feels himself get weaker, his mind growing heavier. An attack on the mind and body; a perfect cocktail of fucked up.
The last thing he sees before he loses consciousness is the glint from Akira’s knife slicing through the Shadow’s throat.

Tokyo is currently at a wicked thirty two degrees.
The sun radiates scorching temperatures down from the sky, the concrete eagerly absorbing every bit of its heat, making something akin to walking across hot coals. It’s hot enough that a mirage is visible to the naked eye. It’s hot enough that every ice cream store has a forty-minute line-up. It’s hot enough that no birds were flying, in fear that they may truly be fried by the sun above them.
Basically, it’s hot as hell.
“Ryuji-chan, pick up the pace!”
But Haru is more vicious than any conceivable temperature.
Looking like a survivor who was lost in the desert for several days, Ryuji lets out a half-garbled battle cry and sprints the last dozen meters. Haru clicks her stopwatch.
Sitting on a lovely lilac blanket, she tsks from underneath the shade. “Three seconds slower.”
“Ugh!” he collapses beside her on the cool grass. If she looks at him from a certain angle, she can see the steam positively radiating off of him. “I’m going to beat the living shit out of the sun.”
“You know I’d support you in anything you do, Ryuji-chan, but I don’t think you’d be fast enough to catch it,” Haru says. She hands him a cold water bottle. “Drink slowly.”
He rolls over so that he can squint up at her. “You’re mean.”
“I’m harsh,” she corrects, shaking the bottle in her hand. “There’s a difference.”
He takes it. “Have you done this before?”
“Helped someone train in running? No. But,” she rummages through her pastel pink tote bag, and proudly shows him a handful of books. He squints at them. “Since I’m so new to the group and everyone has such broad interests, I decided to try reading up on them! Did you know that drinking cold water after running results in less dehydration than drinking warm water?”
Ryuji stares at her. “I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For saying you’re mean. You’re not mean. You’re real nice, Haru.”
She smiles at him and pats his head, despite the overflowing heat and moisture settled on top. “You’re very sweet Ryuji-chan, but that’s not going to make me go easy on you.”
“Yeah, yeah, you’re the tough-love kind of coach.” Ryuji sits up, cracking open the seal. Chugging down the water, he makes eye contact with Haru before slowing down substantially.
He dumps the rest of it on his head, sighing and shivering in relief. “That’s the good shit.”
“Why not wait for the sun to go down a bit?” she suggests. “The heat is really scorching, and there’s still plenty of time to keep training later.”
“Nah,” he stretches his arms behind his head before he stands again. “I gotta keep going while I still can.”
Haru frowns. “Overexertion isn’t going to help anyone.”
“Don’t you worry your fluffy head! I may be stupid, but I know when to stop when I gotta.”
“I really think you should rest for a bit.”
“I will when I’m done, I promise.”
“You looked rough in that last lap—”
“Haru,” Ryuji is grinning, but his tone leaves no room for argument. “I’m going to keep training.”
They stare at each other for a few moments, before Haru’s shoulder sags slightly. “Alright.” He’s about to say something when she cuts him off. “But only if you tell me why you’re so insistent.”
Ryuji shrugs. “If that’s what it’ll take to prove it to you, then sure. It’s kinda stupid, though.”
“I’m sure it’s not.”
“Oh, wait till you hear it,” he laughs, a little shy. “So you know how Mona and Futaba are, like, the Metaverse experts? And Makoto is the big brain? And Yusuke does the whole calling card part?” Haru nods, and he continues. “Well, I’m not really… anything. Ann already took the role of moral support and there’s no way in hell I’m the ‘brain’ in anything. Jeez, last time I picked up a paintbrush was in kindergarten. So I figured, I’d be the fast one, you know? The one that can get to someone fast enough to help them out.” Ryuji’s grin turns into something softer; less edge and more fond. It does something to her heart. “And if it’d help ‘Kira down the line, then it’d be worth it, right?”
Haru stays silent.
“Anyway! That’s enough of that cheesy shit.” He moves back to the track, running shoes scuffing at the concrete. “Wish me luck, maybe I can actually catch up to the sun this time. Teach it a lesson.”
“Ryuji.“
Looking back, he gives her a curious look. “Yeah?”
Haru hesitates.
I never once thought you were stupid. You’ve given so much more to the team than you can imagine. You have no idea how many times you’ve helped Akira without even lifting a finger.
“I have a cooler full of water behind me, so… please try your best out there.”
Ryuji gives her an enthusiastic salute. “Yes ma'am!”
He runs off, the sun continuing to beat down him relentlessly.
====
Somewhere in the back of his mind, Ryuji knew they were all going to die someday. It’s inevitable. The circle of life, the winds of time, la vie en rose, etc.
He just didn’t expect it to happen at the age of 16, on the sinking cognitive ship of their next Prime Minister, wearing a wack-ass leather outfit surrounded by his panicking friends.
“We’re going to die!” Futaba wails, knees shaking uncontrollably to the point where she can hardly keep standing. “I don’t know how to swim!”
“It’ll be fine,” Akira spits through gritted teeth. He’s far tenser than anyone else, red gloves formed into fists and eyes constantly darting around to see what can save their lives. “We just need to focus.”
Makoto points to something on their right and shouts, “There! A lifeboat!”
Sprinting down the slowly escalating ramp, their eyes widen at the single lifeboat propped at the very top of the bow—which is slowly approaching a ninety degree angle. They all had one thought in their minds.
“We’re not going to make it in time,” Yusuke says, quietly.
Akira bangs his fist into a nearby column. “To hell with that. There’s no way I’m letting us die here.”
A heavy silence falls over them. The air is practically crackling with electricity and pure agitation, but there’s also a determination between all of that. Everyone’s overcome with a need to protect their friends and teammates, but they were at a loss of what to do. A quiet realization overcomes the group—there wasn’t going to be a miracle to save them.
Ryuji’s eyes land on Akira. He’s scanning the area, Third Eye activated but unable to pick up anything that isn’t the lifeboat. There’s no panic in his clear, gray eyes, but the terror in it is the most prevalent out of anyone present.
It hits Ryuji, all at once. The boy in front of him may be his age, and even younger than some members of their group, but he is undoubtedly the leader of the infamous Phantom Thieves. Every decision he made had led them here, in this moment, in their imminent death. And if he lets them all get taken, whether it’s through the ocean or the approaching explosions behind him, the truth of the matter is Akira feels that he would be responsible. That it’s his fault that a cognitive boat would take the lives of his friends.
Yeah. That’s not happening.
Ryuji clenches his eyes shut for a few seconds and slowly opens them. He begins to jump in place, hyping himself up.
“Skull…?” Haru asks, brows furrowing.
“Hang tight, guys,” he says, taking quick breaths. He can do this. “I’ll nab the boat.”
A chorus of gasps and heated objections rang through the air, and Akira steps forward, more shaken than Ryuji’s ever seen him. “No. Skull, please—”
Ryuji throws him a wobbly grin, more for Akira than himself. In one smooth motion, he jumps down and hits the ground running.
“No!”
Immediately, he feels his knees and thighs begin to protest, only intensifying the further he sprints up. For a minute, if Ryuji closes his eyes, he can imagine that he’s in a meet. A race. That the screams he hears behind him are his track mates, and not teammates, friends, best friends that would die if he failed to get to the boat fast enough.
He pushes himself even more.
It’s a miracle that he gets to the raft before his legs give out, and he feels a satisfying crank underneath his palms when he rotates the lever. As he throws a thumbs up at his friends, seeing them safe, healthy, alive, he feels relieved beyond words.
He makes eye contact with Akira, and he really should’ve expected the explosion that comes next.
====
His ceiling has seventy-nine plastic stars.
Ryuji stares up at it from his bed, arms crossed behind his head; they’d long since lost their cheap light. It was raining hard outside, enough to rattle against his window like pebbles calling for his attention. He ignores them.
It’s been years since he got those stars—dating all the way back in middle school. He got into a bad habit of sneaking out in the middle of the night to look at the sky from the roof of their apartment building. It scared the shit out of his ma when she finally caught him, scolded him to hell and back. By the end, they found a compromise: she’d buy him a crap ton from the hundred yen store, and they’d stick it up together. When they did, it kept falling down, so she went back and bought him a bottle of superglue. Now you can’t take them off, even if you tried to use a little scraper.
It bothered him, for a while. Young boys were cruel, and anyone who came to visit always poked fun of him for it. It wasn’t until he visited Akira’s room one day, saw how pleased he was that Yusuke bought them for him that he couldn’t help but revel at his own stars again, after all this time.
Ryuji twists his body sideways, ripping his eyes away from the plastic figures. Enough of that.
His eyes have long adjusted to the darkness that surrounds him, allowing a clear view of his room in the limited moonlight. Laundry splayed around his tatami mat from his sprints training today, gaming controllers scattered on the center table from when Akira came over a few days ago. That was a blast. He helped him beat a boss he’s been stuck on for weeks, and Akira beat it like it was nothing, it was the coolest shit ever—
Ryuji forces himself to flip over to glare at the wall. Sleep. That’s a better idea.
He takes a deep breath, forcing his breathing to go steady. There’s lots to do tomorrow—school is a drag, but they plan on meeting up at Leblanc afterwards. The thought allows his muscles to relax. Really, the atmosphere of Leblanc is just so pleasing to him. The warm lighting, the run-down booths, even the smell is a welcome presence. Well, that’s mostly because Akira drags it with him wherever he—
Slowly, his eyes open.
It always comes back to him, doesn’t it?
He rolls onto his back, in a position to stare at the stars again. The rain hammers on.
Ryuji’s a dumb kid.
It’s not a self jab, it wasn’t manifested by some sort of long-standing insecurity. It’s a fact. He’s never been good with a book, never done anything half-decent by picking up a pencil, his mind was never programmed to listen and retain information in long classes. It’s definitely not like he’s the brains of the Thieves, never a strategist of some kind. His ma encouraged him to take on a tutor in the past, and he’d rather bite a finger off than spend her money on wasted potential, so he found himself wandering the streets of Central Street as a way to pass time.
Ryuji’s a dumb kid, but even he knows he’s irrevocably, completely, stupidly in love with Kurusu Akira.
He sits up and ruffles his hair, frustrated. There are too many things wrong with that sentence, too many things that can go wrong because of that sentence. Of course, he finds the one thing that can mess up the unshakeable foundation that he and Akira built for each other. He must’ve really pissed off some God upstairs for him to have a hell-bent queer awakening with his best friend.
No, that’s wrong. It was the furthest thing from hell-bent—it was soft, it was gray, it was raining, and most importantly, it took its time.
They were halfway through Kamoshida’s Palace when Ryuji realized it; the sheer amount of power that hindsight gave him made him pause long enough to get clocked out by a Shadow.
Doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter. It can’t matter, because he would never, ever do anything to fuck up what he has. Not again.
Wait, no, that’s not true. Even before Kamoshida, he’s never had something like this. He’s never had someone like him. He’s never had someone who’s so entirely on the same wavelength as him, who’d have his back even when his was against a wall. Kurusu Akira is…ethereal. Out of this world. Cool as fuck. (Hot as fuck, too.) If you lined up the entirety of Tokyo and told him he could pick one. One person out of the whole lineup to be his friend, he’d have his answer in a heartbeat.
See, now that isn’t something that changed with hindsight—Ryuji’s known that he’s been in love with Akira since before they completed Kamoshida’s Palace. And when he figured it out, he didn’t feel shock. His eyes didn’t widen, his heart didn’t start thumping like crazy. It’s more like he just scratched his head in a huh kind of way. It felt like his life had been waiting for that day in April, like everything was at a standstill until he finally met Kurusu Akira. It made sense. Everything just makes sense when Akira’s involved.
Which just makes this all the more fucked up.
He knocks his head back against the wall, eyes stuck on the raindrops’ rapidly moving shadows on his bedroom floor. Karma. That’s probably what’s happening. The world still hasn’t forgiven him for losing his shit, so they decided to make him pine for the only person that he can’t afford to lose.
He can’t even stomach the idea of trying to get over it, to try and put distance between himself and Akira. He spent a lifetime waiting for a miracle, for someone who didn’t know existed. He’s not giving up a single second of time with him. That’s probably why the world relentlessly shits on him; he’s selfish enough to keep the feelings that he has. But he can’t bring himself to regret that decision. Not with the way his breath hitches in his throat whenever Akira walks into the room.
Ryuji’s in love with his best friend, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about it. He’s accepted it. Just like how the sky is blue, or that he well and truly hates Calculus. It’s a factor of life.
The rain seemed to fall harder, droplets sounding like rigorous hail against the windowpane. He lets out a long yawn.
Ryuji’s in love with his best friend, and there’s absolutely nothing he can do about it.
That’s not the reason why he can’t sleep at night.
Akira is a quiet guy. He gets his point across with as few words as possible, as if each letter costs him fifty yen to say out loud. So he speaks through his expression; a quirk of his brow, a tilt of his head, a certain smile is enough to carry half of the conversation.
And, every once in a while, Akira gets a look.
It comes up at the weirdest times—when the two of them baton pass in the Metaverse, when Ryuji eats ramen too fast and gets sick, when he helps an old lady cross the street. Plenty of times it’s because Ryuji is doing something incredibly stupid (like when he said that the square root of sixteen is six, because if you just get rid of the one, then that makes sense, right?), or when they’re laughing so hard neither of them can breathe. But sometimes it comes up in quieter moments, too. The two of them talking quietly in the attic at Leblanc, or when Akira confesses that he’s relieved Ryuji’s always there for him. (As if there would ever be a time where he won’t be.)
The look is subtle enough to miss but easy to find if someone knows what they’re looking for. The usual attentiveness that resides in Akira’s eyes disappears, in its place a softer gaze; his pupils get dilated, and the edge of his eyes get all crinkled like Valentine’s tissue paper. A half-smile rests on his lips, never quite turning into a full-blown grin, but that’s okay. For some reason, it all reminds Ryuji of the moon. Of soft moonlight. Of streetlamps on empty roads.
Ryuji’s in love with his best friend, and there’s a small, tiny, infinitesimal chance that his best friend might love him back.
His eyelids slide shut, though he knows that it won’t be enough to let him rest.
Realistically, he’s probably wrong. Akira isn’t in love with him, and he’s only seeing what he wants to see. With every eligible person seeming to fall in love with him at some point in time, how would it even be possible that Akira would love him?
He rubs his eyes, desperate to get rid of the unending fatigue that’s plagued him for months on end. It doesn’t work.
Bad excuse. Akira does love him, just like he loves everyone he encounters and befriends and ends up risking his life for. Ryuji’s surprised Akira hasn’t passed out yet, given his bleeding heart for the entire population of Tokyo.
Lightning flashes and thunder rumbles as he rubs his eyes harder.
But what if he wasn’t wrong? What if the signals he’s seeing aren’t based on misunderstood yearning?
When his eyes start to burn, his fingers move up to his hair.
There’s no way in hell he’d ever risk losing his best friend. His partner. His Akira. It’s not something he can gamble. It’s not worth it.
He begins to tug, hands shaking, and he can barely feel the sting of pain from nearly pulling his hair out his scalp.
It’s not worth it. He decided that in the very beginning.
Ryuji buries his face into his palms.
But he is so, so exhausted of being tired.
Lightning flashes, and for a split-second, his room is bright.
Fuck it.
By the time thunder rumbles through his apartment, he’s already out the front door.
His sneakers squelch against the wet concrete, soaking his unsocked feet. He’s sprinting fast enough that the street lights around him blur, and he can feel quick breaths getting pulled out of him. It takes him a few seconds to realize that he forgot to wear a raincoat, but he doesn’t care.
Akira is his best friend. Akira accepted him, flaws and all. Akira loves him, one way or another. That’s what held him back. He can’t risk losing that.
Ryuji quickly checks both sides before running across the street, wiping the rain off his brow, and keeps going.
But that’s what should’ve pushed him into confessing sooner. Because if that’s all true, then that can only ever mean that Akira would accept this part of him too, right?
He jerks out of the way as he almost barrels over a fire hydrant, making him step into a deep puddle. It doesn’t slow him down.
Maybe he would’ve realized it sooner if he wasn’t too fucking tired to think straight.
His lungs begin to complain, his breaths turning to wheezes, but he ignores it in favor of going faster.
Too late for that now. All the matters now is to talk to—
He skids to a halt.
In front of him—eyes wide, hair drenched, no shoes—stands Kurusu Akira.
Ryuji’s mouth falls open, and for a minute, he almost laughs. Of course. He should’ve known. Just as he’s willing to sprint to Akira at an unholy hour in the night…
He smiles sheepishly at him, and Ryuji feels his chest constrict in the loveliest way possible.
…Akira would do the exact same thing for him.
The rain slows, and the thunder ceases for a moment. The world pauses long enough for both of them to speak in the same breath, the same heartbeat:
“I’m in love with you.”
