My painting final on the topic of “IDENTITY”. I used a lot of symbolism in this piece. and it took a lot out of me, but man am I proud of it. Took three days collectively to compose and complete.
My writing assignment:
Two 16x20 Canvases
This project was a lot of time and effort but I sincerely enjoyed it and I love the outcome! It took me hours to think of the composition because of all the things I had on my identity list and got excited when I came up with this. It feels like surrealism / contemporary meets collage in a sense. I was evidently inspired by four artists.
Mariko Mori’s “Ring” from her rebirth collection as the collection in general really drew me in due to the minimal, light and cozy feel her work gave me. “Minimal” was one of the words on my list two weeks ago and I really enjoy the way opal looks in the light which “Ring” captures beautifully. I did my best to put together the pastel blue and yellow to mimic the lit up opal look, and instantly I knew I needed to make this a moon in my painting. I realized how much I gravitate to a cosmic aesthetic in my work so it paired well with my idea of depicting the origin of my name. Roman Goddess Diana was the Goddess of the moon and animals (amongst other things) as she is subtly represented.
Alvarado Gaitan Barrios’ “Nostalgia De Paraiso” is a beautiful highly saturated painting depicting a variety of wildlife and botanicals done by a Nicaraguan painter. This piece inspired me to include my favorite flower, the tulip, as well as represent my nationality with Nicaragua’s national bird, the Guardabarranco (also known as a motmot finch). I wanted to make sure to keep a majority of the painting highly saturated as well, with contrasting pigments.
Frida Kahlo’s “Self Portrait Along the Boarder Line Between Mexico and the United States” is the piece that I could not get out of my head while painting this assignment. I felt a strong connection to that piece because although I was born here in the states in New York, I yearn the simple and humble lifestyle in Nicaragua. Kahlo shows an American side along side a Mexican one, which inspired me to put the Statue of Liberty’s crown on top of the Guardabarranco. This puts an emphasis in my prominent New York roots as well as my pride in my Nicaraguan roots. I kept this painting in mind as well when painting my self portrait. Keeping my image involved in my identity just as Kahlo has. (Just with an anxious expression to represent my anxiety).
Will Cotton’s “Candy Clouds (Hannah)” had the most notable influence on my painting. I wanted to mimic the light airy looking cotton candy clouds as a way to convey sensitivity, vulnerability and intimacy. HSP (highly sensitive person) was on my list and is something I recently found out I was. It has been something I truly struggled with my entire life. The neon pink screams feminine which is something I also struggled with showing pride in most my life. These clouds are an ode to my newfound self love in my sensitivity and not being ashamed to show I love obvious feminine representations.
Aside from the artists who inspired me, I wanted to depict other words from my list.
I strongly identify with my zodiac, so the Aries constellation is depicted in the night sky.
i arranged the tulips with purpose. I wanted four of them ( 4 ) in total, one at the top ( 1 ) and three at the bottom ( 3 ) symbolic to my birthday 4/13.
The third eye on the self portrait ties in with “intuition” which I got without a doubt from my mother, and so I made the eye the same color as her actual iris because her eye color is so unique.
Lastly, I wanted to accent the self portrait with representations of the word “millennial” (my generation of people comically teased as being self absorbed and superficial) so I added one of those trendy halo crowns (I always wanted one since the met gala). And to show my love of make-up, something I definitely identify with, I went ahead and painted a popular make up look of clouds across the face.

73 Questions
WEARING: SUGARHIGH BOHO CROP TOP | AOS WHITE DENIM | PATRICIA GREEN ESPADRILLE | ANA LUISA EARRINGS | OLIVER BILOU BAG | SUNGLASS WAREHOUSE FLORA SUNNIES
THIS POST IS BROUGHT TO YOU BY SUGARHIGH & SUNGLASS WAREHOUSE.
Happy Monday! It's a rainy morning here in New York and after compiling and sorting through all the questions from this past week on Instagram, I've decided to do more regular posts answering your questions through my blog rather than social media. Reason being is for the sole purpose of having enough space to answer everything. You only get so many characters on your captions on IG! I was initially selecting and answering 10-theme questions every Sunday on my Instagram, but after some consideration, I think it'll be much more effective on here. So without further ado, let's jump into some questions! This week's theme is inspired by Vogue's 73 Questions, where I went through them myself and did one for you! height : 5′3″
scent : peaches, roses, resistance soap, slight scent of explosive residue

❝ HISTORY.
her earliest memory was waking up on the millennium falcon, a concerned wookiee overhead. she was tiny, just five years old, and very scared. she couldn’t remember much, only that she didn’t know where she was and that she didn’t know where her family was. she had no name, no home, nothing.
she had been found with a bump on her head, knocked out cold after getting lost and separated from her family. han solo had been stealing from the warehouse nearby when he noticed the girl and decided he couldn’t just leave her there. he searched high and low and couldn’t find the girl’s parents, so… he supposed he had no choice but to take her with him. he wouldn’t feel right throwing her to the streets, and he knew of a pair of rebels that could care for her.
bartam and doma were rebels that fought with the alliance and settled on yavin iv with the others after the war. bartam was a strategist, and doma worked as a droid mechanic in charge of servicing the astromechs and other helpers. an accident left doma unable to have her own children, so this girl falling into their laps so to speak was truly a blessing from the force. the pair reminded her of her fuzzy memory of her parents, and honestly she was just so scared and sad that she jumped at the chance of family once more. they adopted her and named her keturah antilles, continuing the tradition of naming the children after famous rebels, in this case her middle name came from wedge antilles, the pilot.
she grew up around poe and the other kids, learning from the rebels, hearing all the stories and dreaming of being as bold and brave as the heroes around them. she mourned losses with them, celebrated new babies with them, fought and played and grew with them, she quickly became one of them. but she knew something was missing. something would always be missing, but it wasn’t like she could retrace her steps and go backwards. all she could do was keep moving forward.
she was one of the only yavin brats that didn’t die, get taken, or leave.
always a big fan of putting together puzzles and little inventions, her skills proved incredibly useful through her life. she went through school and then into training, finding that she had a real knack for fixing weapons, building bombs and weapons, and using both effectively. she could hold a blaster and know what was wrong with it, and even saved a couple people from losing an arm to a defective blaster.
when it came time for her to be part of the resistance, she was twenty and rearing to get in the action. she was part of the infantry class and rose through the ranks quite quickly; her skills in strategy from her adoptive father clearly showing through. she was appointed to lieutenant a couple years ago, which is her current rank.
since most of the attention and resources went to the navy, keturah spearheaded most of the ground operations. they were just as important but much harder to organize and protect – they couldn’t just fly away from a sticky situation, they were the ones dropped in on foot and all but left for dead until the work was done. such a life has made her incredibly resourceful and inventive. she doesn’t mind that they’re less looked after, because she trains the other infantry to be just as cunning as the speedy pilots. they still lose good soldiers, but they’ve endured this long and they’re still going strong.
she lost her adoptive parents in their transports on the way to crait from the raddus. she’s still pretty broken up from it. they were all she had.
❝ ARRIVAL ON BATUU.
she arrived on batuu with most of the rebels when they were establishing it as a base. she’s been here ever since.
❝ PRESENT.
keturah and the other infantrymen have been working as peacekeepers, protecting the innocent citizens of batuu from the troopers and first order officers. they get roughed up pretty often, but it’s better that they take the hits than the innocent civilians.
she still hopes her adoptive parents will come to life like everyone else has. maybe she’s just not that lucky.
recently found out that kaydel co connix is her sister, she was born on dulathia to a family that loved her very much, and her recurring nightmare was the memory of her last few moments before losing all her memories of her past.
❝ HEADCANONS.
because life in the infantry is so hard, and her memories of the past still hurt her, she has a tendency to be a little emotional at times. but she refuses to continue the centuries-long culture of emotions being bad things in war. she’s not afraid to say what she feels or cry or get frustrated, and her emotional support extends to everyone in the resistance. she’s a firm believer that keeping it all bottled up gets in the way of being an effective soldier.
she’s one of those people that can find a way to connect with anyone, she’s genuine and kind and will listen to your problems all day long, share her own in return. it’s not that she trusts easily, but she believes that there’s nothing she could share that could really be used against her, so if asked, she’d share anything. she’s just a bright girl.
she has a tendency to wander ( which is probably the reason why she got lost in the first place. ) she gets distracted if she’s not working on something because she’s always looking for something new to do.
loves droids so much, she treats them like people and hangs out with them all the time. bffs with k-2so.
she’s very artistic!! she loves to knit and draw and be creative.
❝ TIMELINE OF IMPORTANT EVENTS.
8 ABY / AGE 0 : birth on dulathia
13 ABY / AGE 5 : gets lost and loses memories, is found by han solo and taken to yavin iv, is adopted
28 ABY / AGE 20 : joins the resistance
34 ABY / AGE 26 : arrives on batuu, present

April 2018
Rediscovering an old passion of mine: The ice. I went to another ice-hockey match the other day and the atmosphere was fantastic - tense, excited, the players were really going for it. Hannes bought me beer and a hot dog and I enganged in friendly banter with the enemy (I wished him a safe trip home to Karlsruhe after Mannheim had lost and he winked at me). I really hope we'll win the semi-finals. I desperately want to go to the final! Ice-hockey brings back childhood memories for me because I used to join my dad who had season tickets for the LA Cannibals. He was allowed to bring children under 6 for free (I think I must have been 6 until I was about 10 years old...) I also saw the movie I, Tonya about the infamous figure skater Tonya Harding on Easter Sunday, sitting alone in the cinema, enjoying my popcorn. I loved this film. The soundtrack is awesome, the acting and the humour are spot-on. A few days later I actually went ice-skating with Korbian (in the EHC Red Bull rink!) and even though my feet still hurt so much that I have to unfasten the ice skates every twenty minutes it was great fun. Water and ice - I'm in my element.
A small present from a sixth-grader: a sticker of a smiling bowl of ramen noodle soup!
I can see that I'm so much fitter now than a few months ago. I can run up a flight of stairs without being out of breath. Not even a bit.
Sewing together all the granny squares I had lying around. The size is still on baby blanket level so just give me a few more years to finish it...
The first warm days. Planting flowers in front of my window (primrose, forget-me-not, buttercups). Setting up the canvas chair. Hanging up the laundry on the balcony. Eating outside, walking over Viktualienmarkt just before sunset. Great light and amazing smells.
Climbing the hill in Olympiapark. Lying in the grass, making out with K., enjoying a spectacular view over the Alps and the city.
Having painted toe nails for the first time after the winter. I especially like O.P.I's Tickle my France-y (and how every nail polish just looks so much prettier under water).
The Describe Yourself Like a Male Author Would Twitter thread: Her breasts entered the room before her far less interesting face, decidedly maternal hips and rounded thighs. He found her voice unpleasantly audible. As his gaze dropped from her mouth (still talking!) to her cleavage, he wondered why feminists were so angry all the time. (stellar example by Jennifer Weiner)
Watching Gegen die Wand by Fatih Akin for the first time. And Frida - seems like I'm quite into biopics considering how much I liked I, Tonya.
Seeing how the cat reacted to Korbinian. She just rolled into a little ball in his palms and he held her in his hands for quite a while. Seems like she prefers men...
Amira Casar is very pretty.
He said I didn't snore!
Unter Glück hatte ich mir eigentlich was anderes vorgestellt.
A new double-ended eyebrow brush.
Talking about that one illustration in Janosch's Post für den Tiger (mole network!) and Lena knew immediately what I meant.
Walking over the playground with Lena and Alexandra. Trying out the seesaw, a carousel and the swings. Climbing a jungle gym, squeezing through the ropes, sliding down (my ass didn't get stuck!!)
Lying outside in the sun on a deck chair after one hour of swimming. Cold at first, very very nice after I was dry. It's incredible how much power the sun already has.
Sore muscles from ice-skating. Hill-climbing. Swimming.
Talking a walk in the Nymphenburg castle grounds. Taking a photo of Magdalenenklause (as always - I think it's fascinating how you can see the reflection of the trees and the blue sky as well as the interior of the chapel and the windows at the far end). Reading at Königsplatz. Buying food at the Asian market and some candy at Pomeroy & Winterbottom. Meeting Lena and Obi, having avocado toast with fried eggs at Holzkranich in Schwabing. All in all a really nice day even though I wasn't in a great mood to begin with.
Trommeln in der Nacht was the best play I've seen at the Kammerspiele so far. I really liked it. I mean, an Australian guy singing pop songs during a classic Brecht play - what can go wrong?
Swimming freestyle laps for the first time! My technique is probably shit but all that matters is that it gets my heart rate up.
Finding four tiny holo stars on a page in a librabry book.
Deciding to ride my bike down to Großhesselohe - I lay around in the sunshine in my bathing suit. And I needed sunscreen for the first time this year! I love the smell of the Garnier sun oil. Felt like summer! Isarkaribik... I also lay across from a nudist guy with a pretty good ass. Doesn't hurt.
Moser Roth lemon yoghurt chocolate.
Getting a bunch of Alstroemeria flowers at the supermarket. They were so pretty and stayed fresh for weeks.
Scene hunting.
The sound of the woodpeckers in the trees outside my apartment.
Delicious recipes for all kinds of wraps in the latest issue of Schrot und Korn.
Walking barefoot.
Meeting two huge, fat cats on my evening walk over the fields. Seeing the illuminated living rooms, watching people having dinner, wondering if they actually like each other. The smell of the first blossoming trees. The view over the forest after sunset, watching planes rise above the clouds. The sound of last year's leaves in the wind. Still some traces of light left. Seeing a hedgehog behind a garden fence.
How interested the cat was in the little blooming twig I brought home from a walk.
Reading so incredibly much.
Reading, yes, again - reading about Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes in Connie Palmen's Du sagst es. It's a fictional autobiography of Hughes. All these feelings, so much drama and a life for literature.
Another evening walk (I like them best) - lying down in the big nest swing at the playground. Finding a pile of free give-aways on a bench, taking home paper plates (I use them for acrylic paints).
Trauringe have only one letter more than traurige.
Going to work by tram on a sunny morning. A book in my lap, eating fruit salad. Seeing the city in a different light and discovering places I had never seen before because I usually only go there by night (for example the square/monument left of the Isar near Müllersches Volksbad).
The fact that the laundry dries in a matter of hours on the balcony now.
Taking a random library book to read on my way to work. Reading the passage "Es war April, der Monat, der von T.S. Eliot zum grausamsten unter seinesgleichen gekürt wurde, und es war Freitag, der dreizehnte." in April, on Friday the 13th. The likelihood of this happening is approximately 1 in 2500.
Kunstautomaten.
Meeting basically everyone at Muffat-Biergarten. The Fabis, Claudia, Frank, Manu and Susa. Even Lucy the dog-lady was there.
Paying Rasmus a compliment which he was really happy about.
Hanging up some crystals in the trellis on the balcony.
Spending a day at the Northern part of the English Garden with the "family". Playing Kubb, somersaulting spontaneously, so much delicious food (pizza, chocolate fruit, chickpea salad, sushi, cold drip coffee, ...), exploring some old trees at the riverside, climbing, playing with cheeky dogs, reading Lena's graphic novel.
The Destiny's Child reunion at Coachella.
Ferrero is making mother-effin' Kinder Bueno, Milchschnitte and Kinderriegel ice-cream now! Deliiiish.
Going to a workshop about voice and body language. I actually got way more positive feedback than expected. Apparently my voice and articulation are quite nice and I keep eye contact much better than I thought. Also, I asked another girl from the group to join me for lunch. Yay, talking to people! Hello, new extrovert me!
Foldable silicon lunch boxes.
Playing badminton in the park. I want to do that more often!
Getting eight more books from the library even though I still had five at home.
When your book fits exactly into the handle on the seat in front of you and you don't need a bookmark.
Having a monthly ticket for public transport is surprisingly nice. Hop on, hop off.
Visiting some of my students at their work place on Girls'/Boy's Day. We went to Deutsches Museum and a kindergarden, for example. It was great to see how much the kids enjoyed their days.
The playoff final!!! Two goals in 10 seconds, omg. So EHC Red Bull Munich won for the third time in a row. There were gold glitter, beer showers, the players' children on the ice. And I flirted with a dude from Garmisch who kept calling me princess.
Woodworking. I'm currently carving a bowl and a small bird out of limewood.
Carrying a huge pot of flowers all the way home on the train.
That other kind of mango. The type you usually get in Asia. Less sweet, creamier.
Going to the market on Saturdays. Getting fresh bread, vegetables or flowers for the balcony.
Riding my bike through the forest in order to get to the garden centre.
A weird childhood flashback while washing my dirty feet in the sink: the memory of my grandma who wouldn't let us sit on the sofa in the summer if we didn't do that.
Spending a day with a happy-go-lucky woodworker. Playing games at the Starnberger See. Driving around in his Skoda. Eating pizza.
Wearing the &otherstories sunflower necklace with the one I bought in Portland and had always been to tight for me. And wearing the pink-blue checked pyjama pants in combination with a soft grey longsleeve shirt. Another thing that used to be too small.
The balcony!!! Tomatoes, yellow zucchini, pink poppies, multi-coloured petunias, I mean, YES. The light breaking in one of the crystals. Rainbow reflections.

8 Puzzles You Can Do While Staying at Home—That Also Double as Delightful Decor
Gerasimov174/Getty Images
Lockdown restrictions may be lifting across much of the country, but many states are still encouraging residents to stay at home whenever possible—which means that puzzles and games are still one of the best ways to keep busy.
But rather than fill your living room with one more fugly (fun, but ugly) puzzle, we thought it’d be better to give you a few that actually look good—and that you can repurpose afterward into some delightful wall art.
So if your days are still dragging by and you’re looking for something fun to switch them up, check out one of these eight puzzles that will double as delightful decor.
1. La Henri Catisse
Mudpuppy Henri Catisse puzzle from Amazon
Amazon
This Mudpuppy Henri Catisse puzzle from Amazon isn’t quite as French as it sounds, but it sure is cute. Featuring a lounging pink cat on a colorful modern background, this 100-piece, 12-by-12-inch puzzle is an easy hour-or-less project you can complete with the whole family.
Not feeling el gato rosado? Check out its sister puzzle, the Frida Catlo, which is similarly priced at just $15.
2. Agate geode
Agate Puzzle No. 100 from Nervous System
Nervous System
Geode designs are hot this season, which is one of the reasons we love this Agate Puzzle No. 100 from Nervous System. The other reason? Coming in at only 8 inches in diameter, this round little gem is actually still pretty challenging—especially for a 180-piece puzzle. Made from thin birch plywood and cut in a “dense, maze-like” pattern, there’s much more to this $65 geode puzzle than meets the eye.
3. White Heaven (or hell)
Adeeing 1,000-piece mini jigsaw puzzle in White Heaven
Amazon
Depending on your definition of heaven, this Adeeing 1,000-piece mini jigsaw puzzle in White Heaven ($23 from Amazon) might just be it. (This is the insanely challenging 1,000-piece, all-white puzzle that people have been talking about for months.)
And while it might seem weird to hang an all-white puzzle on the wall, rest assured it can be colored to your liking once—or shall we say if—you ever end up finishing it.
4. Birds ‘n’ bees
Michelle Morin hummingbirds wooden jigsaw puzzle from Artifact Puzzles
Artifact Puzzles
Simply put, this Michelle Morin hummingbirds wooden jigsaw puzzle ($77 from Artifact Puzzles) is a work of art—full stop. And it isn’t just the whimsy of these pastel-painted hummingbirds we’re talking about; it’s also the fact that each individual puzzle piece has been laser cut into tiny birds and bees.
Would this 287-piece wooden jigsaw puzzle make for a great gift? Absolutely. But it would also look pretty damn good on your wall.
5. Tropical greenery
Monstera tropical leaf jigsaw puzzle from Zazzle
Zazzle
We’re all dreaming about exotic destinations right now, which is why it helps to have a bit of fresh greenery around. And if you’re not the houseplant-keeping type, no worries. This 252-piece Monstera tropical leaf jigsaw puzzle ($20 from Zazzle) will look great in your living room—no watering required.
6. Colors of Venice
1,000-piece colorful Venice jigsaw puzzle from Amazon
Amazon
And speaking of the vacation we didn’t get to take this year, this 1,000-piece colorful Venice jigsaw puzzle ($20 from Amazon) is perfect for any armchair traveler. Filled with the brightly colored houses of Venice, just completing this 20-by-27-inch puzzle will lift your spirits out of quarantine, and it makes for a great bit of colorful wall art once done.
7. Sunny flowers
“Twelve Sunflowers” puzzle from Puzzle Warehouse
Puzzle Warehouse
We’re all in need of a bit more sunshine, which is why this 1,000-piece “Twelve Sunflowers” puzzle ($18 from Puzzle Warehouse) inspired by Van Gogh’s famous painting is such a great one to work on while staying at home. Showcasing the details of one sunflower from the famous painting, this is a challenging puzzle with a big payoff, bringing all those sunshine vibes back into your place.
8. Puzzles are for lovers
Ridley’s Games gin lover’s 500-piece puzzle
Walmart
Gin lovers, that is. If the whole staying-at-home thing has you feeling like you need a stiff drink more than anything else, this Ridley’s Games gin lover’s 500-piece jigsaw puzzle ($22 from Walmart) cuts straight to the chase. Besides reminding you of all the cocktails you’ll order once bars reopen, it’ll also look great next to your home bar.
How to hang a puzzle
Once your puzzle is completed, it’s time to hang that baby up. In order to make it sturdy enough to hang, you’ll want to start by investing in some puzzle adhesive.
With that done, take the time to measure your puzzle and order a frame for it. A word to the wise: Don’t just use the box measurements. Puzzles can vary from product to product, so it’s better to just measure it yourself.
Keep in mind that some puzzles (like the wooden ones listed here) are thicker than your standard cardboard puzzle. For this, consider getting a heavy-weight frame that can better support it.
Looking for more details on adorning your walls with a finished puzzle project? Check out this tutorial from Puzzle Warehouse.

San Antonino Castillo Velasco is a small town famous for one thing, the traditional and iconic Mexican peasant blouse. Located 40 minutes outside of Oaxaca City, the artisans residing there are renowned for the multicolored, minuscule and pretty embroidery that was said to have taken the American hippie fashion scene by storm in the 1970s. Although these Mexican woman have been wearing the peasant blouse for decades, the garment has become a signature piece of the ‘boho’ look with traditional designs being plagiarized by high-end fashion houses who have turned the peasant blouse into a much sought after designer look.
Traditional Mexican Peasent blouses made by the artisans of San Antonino Castillo Velasco in Oaxaca. You can order a custom blouse at Artesania Textil, learn how they’re made in a drop-in workshop or choose one of the many beautiful items they have for sale.
In November 2018 I went to Oaxaca to hunt down traditional techniques for workshops for our new tour, Mexico: Frida, Fashions, Fabrics & Fiestas. It was here that I was introduced to Artesania Textil, a woman’s co-operative in the outskirts of the city who specialise in producing embroidery for Mexican peasant shirts.
Artesania Textil provides a network of 60 or so women with opportunities for supplementary income by producing blouses, dresses and huipils for special occasions. The co-operative, which is run by the local church, also gives the women daily meals, natural medicines and opportunities for education.

Traditional designs are made using traditional techniques by artisans who have had their trade passed down to them through the generations and the co-operative provides them with all the fabric, thread, sewing equipment and training they need.
Around ten different women are primarily responsible for drawing the designs of tiny pansies, wild flowers and birds onto the cotton fabric in biro pen. One dress design normally takes around two to three hours to draw. The garment is then returned to the workshop where the embroiderers come and collect it to take home. There they will finish the designs with a combination of draw thread, smocking, satin stitch embroidery and crochet techniques. The pieces are then returned to the workshop where in-house tailors machine sew the garments together.
The artisans themselves are not wealthy. They work part-time and are paid around 200 pesos ($10) for a finished embroidery panel on a blouse. Each blouse takes around five to seven days to complete and is often worked on in the in-between hours of their other jobs.

The traditional and most popular style is in white cotton, but there are now brighter options available too such as purple, pink, blue, green and orange. Simpler two colour blouses with one colour embroidery instead of rainbow colours is also becoming more popular. The designs vary from simple blouses for $40, like the ones seen in the photos, to ornate and heavily embellished dresses which sell for around $200-300.

The brightly coloured embroidered flowers are what sets the Mexican peasant blouse apart from traditional designs from other countries.

Artesania Textil is based in San Antonino Castillo Velasco, which can be easily reached from Oaxaca along highway 175, turn right around 2 km before Ocotlan Los Morelos. Call ahead to arrange a traditional textile workshop, one hour costs 100 pesos and includes materials.
