Portrait of a princess ~
This is a death mask (i.e., post-mortem face cast) I recently made of a client’s feline companion that passed away after a long and heroic battle with organ failure.
The cat’s name was “Princess Kitty” but she has fondly been bestowed the nickname “PK” around my house because of the long stretch of time she has been with me as I work on her memorials. This death mask was part 1 of a twofold aftercare project. PK’s actual body is being preserved as well and I will be sharing that part of the project after it has been completed. (If you want a sneak peek, scroll back to my post from 6/5/23)
Because she was a princess in life she needed to be treated like one after she passed as well with a mask befitting royalty. The entire exterior of the mask is gilded in genuine 24K gold, including the whiskers. I gold leafed each whisker individually, then attached them to the mask as closely as possible to the spot they occupied on her face when she was still alive. A lot of time went into this project for a number of reasons. Over the years I have been approached with increasing frequency by pet owners seeking death masks, however, this is the first request I have ever accepted – mold making and casting was something I had never done before, so first I needed to teach myself. This project involved putting alginate over the cat's face to create a mold of it, then pouring a special gypsum cement into my mold to make the cast. Historically, death masks were often a cast of an individual's entire head and typically made of plaster. The practice can be traced back to ancient times and has continued to serve a multitude of purposes throughout history, but my favorite was their use as funerary mementos of deceased infants during the Victorian Era.
Casting the face of a deceased loved one might seem morbid to some people these days, but you need to keep in mind this tradition began before the advent of photography and it was the only way to capture the likeness of an individual other than having their portrait painted or bust sculpted. Aside from the varied accuracy of those two methods, they were both extremely expensive so average people couldn’t afford to get either done. Having a tangible keepsake of a deceased loved one is a cross-cultural tradition that takes countless forms and has been going on for countless millennia. A death mask is a beautiful and meaningful custom that I’m thrilled has been resurrected in recent years as a means to commemorate companion animals.

Finished up the chocolate furred dwarf rabbit this weekend!
A potential client asked if she could buy just the tanned, flat pelt. It turned out to be the perfect request as this specimen had a small bald patch on its neck, which would have been noticeable on a traditional taxidermy mount (the rest of the skin, head, and feet will be used in future projects). I hadn't made a nice example of soft leather in a long time, actually forgot how satisfying the results can be....
After a long night of hand-breaking & stretching, I produced one super soft and unique chocolate dwarf rabbit pelt! It has extra thick belly and rump fur, making a nice fluffy border around most of the piece. Also I left the tail on the pelt, just because it is cute.
(SOLD btw, Thank you!)

I've been pretty silent on social media so far this year as I've been working mostly on pet memorializations. It was such an honor working with this 155 pound Mastiff, the largest dog I've worked with to date. His cleaned skull is quite heavier and denser than an average deer skull with antlers. I'd like to thank his owner/companion for allowing me to share his photos. Every companion animal I have the honor of working with starts to feel like a family member and I miss them a bit when they go home 🖤 . . . #dogskull #petpreservation #petmemorialization #mastiff #petaftercare #petaftercarekc #petaftercarekcmo #skullcleaning #bonecleaning #halfembalmed #alternativeaftercare #alternativepetaftercare #taxidermy #oddities #dermestidbeetles #dermestidcleaned (at Kansas City, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7XfYcDJPKA/?igshid=4y3z4m9wc7km

I can well imagine you’re thinking ‘whatttt.?’ Well… tiny spood alert! Arachnophobes, look away! This RIDICULOUSLY teenie one (rest hit teenie soul) is part of a very lovely commission I’m currently working on. Obviously I’m both very stressed and very excited at the prospect of pinning such a small one, but I’m super honoured to be doing it. I will be putting the tutorials on patreon for anyone who is interested, and have now changed my subscription settings so if you do sign up mid month, you won’t get charged twice! If you’re interested in pet commissions, please consider me. I love working with your teenie spoods especially 🖤 #jennascuriocabinet #spoods #spideralert #jumpingspiders #insectsofig #regius #spidersoftheworld #arachnids #entomologyart #insectart #petpreservation #petmemorials https://www.instagram.com/p/CkORumhqGN0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

George the opossum’s skull is finished as of earlier today. I previously posted a photo of George’s adorable feet, and I’m very happy with how well his skull has cleaned up. His is definitely the largest opossum skull I have processed (look at his huge crest and teeth!!), and he will be going back home to his human parents very soon. The rest of George has been very kindly donated to me to work with, and I have been very honored to work with such a lovely family for this memorial preservation. *George was rescued from a bad situation when he was a baby, and his human mom had previous experience with wildlife rehabilitation. George needed and received special care, and an opossum is not a suitable pet for everyone. (I am posting this, and any future updates, with permission from George’s mom. George is a beloved family member, and only kindness will be tolerated.) • If you have lost a furry, feathery, scaley, or even spikey friend, and are interested in any of my memorial services, you can contact me anytime. I offer a variety of options, including (but not limited to): skull/skeleton cleaning, articulations, fur/skin preservation, wet preservation, and more.

#TimeTraveler  And every bit as royal as those who came before her. She was gracious enough to give me this wonderful portrait while she rested along the way during her long journey. I will be sharing more photos from her transformation soon. #PetPreservation #PetMummification #InProcess

Art from my college years at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The object on the tray is the skull of one of my family pets.
Title: Tank Materials: Bone, tar, steel tray, gold leaf Date: 1990
The pet was a large tortoise named Tank who roamed free-range in my house in the mid 1970’s when I was growing up. A few years after he died, I covertly dug up his bones and hid them in a secret container on a rudimentary shrine in my bedroom. His remains were the first I ever kept. Over the years that followed, I saved a handful more from other pets and the esoteric shrines became more elaborate. Later, while in college, I began incorporating their cherished remains into memorial artworks. Over the years a lot of articles about my art have mentioned the above practice. However, in an attempt to sensationalize my work, none of them ever mentioned what sort of animals the pets were or specifically what I created with them. Writers intentionally left that up to the imagination of readers in order to conjure up images of me digging up cats and dogs under the light of a full moon. To this day some writers are still eager to capitalize upon the “dug-up-her-dead-pets-and-made-art-with-their-bodies” angle. You would think by now people would have grown bored of this tagline. Sadly, people tend to be narrow-minded so anything outside of Western social norms remains an eccentricity to them. After working tirelessly for 3 decades to legitimatize my belief system and my choice of art materials I still receive invitations from galleries asking me to participate in their “Halloween exhibitions” and get approached by death metal bands and horror book authors for cover art. To avoid fostering further typecasting, I politely decline. After 30 years of working with animal remains, I still feel somewhat disheartened when people interpret my work as morbid. Unless you are an artist yourself, you have no idea how intensely personal a piece of art can be to its creator. And unless you have worked with the body of an animal, you don’t know how much more intimate the connection to the work is. My work is a celebration of life, not a spectacle of death. This isn’t for shock value. My art is my religion
