Portrait of a princess ~
This is a death mask (i.e., post-mortem face cast) I recently made of a client’s feline companion that passed away after a long and heroic battle with organ failure.
The cat’s name was “Princess Kitty” but she has fondly been bestowed the nickname “PK” around my house because of the long stretch of time she has been with me as I work on her memorials. This death mask was part 1 of a twofold aftercare project. PK’s actual body is being preserved as well and I will be sharing that part of the project after it has been completed. (If you want a sneak peek, scroll back to my post from 6/5/23)
Because she was a princess in life she needed to be treated like one after she passed as well with a mask befitting royalty. The entire exterior of the mask is gilded in genuine 24K gold, including the whiskers. I gold leafed each whisker individually, then attached them to the mask as closely as possible to the spot they occupied on her face when she was still alive. A lot of time went into this project for a number of reasons. Over the years I have been approached with increasing frequency by pet owners seeking death masks, however, this is the first request I have ever accepted – mold making and casting was something I had never done before, so first I needed to teach myself. This project involved putting alginate over the cat's face to create a mold of it, then pouring a special gypsum cement into my mold to make the cast. Historically, death masks were often a cast of an individual's entire head and typically made of plaster. The practice can be traced back to ancient times and has continued to serve a multitude of purposes throughout history, but my favorite was their use as funerary mementos of deceased infants during the Victorian Era.
Casting the face of a deceased loved one might seem morbid to some people these days, but you need to keep in mind this tradition began before the advent of photography and it was the only way to capture the likeness of an individual other than having their portrait painted or bust sculpted. Aside from the varied accuracy of those two methods, they were both extremely expensive so average people couldn’t afford to get either done. Having a tangible keepsake of a deceased loved one is a cross-cultural tradition that takes countless forms and has been going on for countless millennia. A death mask is a beautiful and meaningful custom that I’m thrilled has been resurrected in recent years as a means to commemorate companion animals.

Final image of River, who was such a joy to draw - so many shades of red in her coat and I can't get over that gorgeous snoot! (One of the next things I need to work on is taking better photos of my work....)

I was looking at the archive photos and I found one that I hadn’t shown you before.
That’s the cat I worked on in April. As I remember now, I saw this pretty face and immediately recommended to make it in the big size. I’m so glad that the customer listened to me.
I miss you, ginger sweet kitten 🥰

#TimeTraveler  And every bit as royal as those who came before her. She was gracious enough to give me this wonderful portrait while she rested along the way during her long journey. I will be sharing more photos from her transformation soon. #PetPreservation #PetMummification #InProcess
