Hanging Bear Pelt
It's quite incredible to see this large pelt all hung up, I feel like bear pelts tend to be a bit rarer on the wall hanger side due to how much room they take up. Also, it's a pretty big deal to get bear hunting tags so most hunters want to get them fully mounted or turned into mounted rugs.

Groundhog Taxidermy -- Day 1
[TW: Gorey bloody dead animal]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay, explanation to that second to last picture: this was a roadkill critter, so it's skull was completely smashed. When I pulled the hide back over the face the entirety of the front of the jaws came off with it. It was... and uncomfortable mess.
Anyways, today's step was skinning and starting fleshing. Tomorrow I'll try to finish fleshing and maybe start pickling. Doing a soft mount with this. Hoping to be done in the next two weeks.

Witchcraft was supposed to be the remains of shamanism, and apparently the druids had been shamans, wearing pelts to communicate with those species of animal.

pelts for my husband. i need to offer my partner pelts and i don’t hunt so…
i printed these out and laminated them to be used as dry-erase note pads for our grocery lists.
we had a little lined post it designated for that. i doodled a bat pelt thinking i would draw a fresh pelt for each list, but my husband refused to write on it unless i laminated it 🙄
so i made BETTER pelts worth laminating 👹

I was gifted this coyote pelt. The leather is in really rough shape. Stiff as a board and really greasy. I’ve never worked with a pelt before so if anyone has any tips on how to fix this guy up, I’m all for suggestions!

Wolf vs Coyote Pelts
Definitely two of my favorite pelts, it just amazes me how big these guys are. My large coyote pelt is from New Hampshire which explains his huge size while the black wolf is from Alaska.
Both have a bit of a more wirey hair texture than that of a fox or tanuki.

HELLO OTHERKIN/THERIANS/ALTERHUMANS/NONHUMANS/OTHERLINKERS/OTHERPAW!! DO YOU WANT TO BUY AN ETHICAL TAIL BUT DON'T KNOW WHERE? IM HERE TO GIVE YOU TIPS!
Okay I'll stop talking in caps now, but here you have my tail guide for any and all people who just want a tail!
Cruel fur farms treat their animals badly, and it's best to avoid them. Here are some tips on how to spot cruel farms from the ethically sourced ones! (Most tips from here!)
Disclaimer: I would only be wary of items if they show more than 2 of these signs. Just do research before you buy!
Signs that indicate a cruel source:
- Sold/Sourced from Asia (Asia has bad animal cruelty laws, here's a list per country on how good their animal rights are)
- From Wish, AliExpress, Amazon, Temu or EBay (Even the 'faux fur' ones can be real and cruel)
- If they use stock photos
- Asian lobster clams (This does not always indicate cruelty)
- If they look thin, small, and generally unhealthy
- Any usage of 'mink farms' in desc.
- If they are bleached or colored
- If the price is low (Under 20-25)
- No info about source (Always ask the seller if you're not sure)
Signs that indicate ethical source:
- Scraps that were being thrown away otherwise (Should be in item description or FAQ)
- Lived long and happy lives (Item description or FAQ)
- Thick, healthy tails
- Population control/Legal hunters (With a permit)
Now I'll show a few Etsy shops I've confirmed to be Ethically sourced!

It's here!!! Wild platinum European red fox. Lighting is terrible today so these are the best pics I could get. Will take some better ones outside when it's not raining.
This fox is my holy grail. I have been obsessed with these wild platinum foxes since I saw a photo of one in 2011. I've always wanted the chance to examine one up close so getting this beauty is very exciting. The fur on it is so interesting. It has the coarse texture of a European fox but with slightly longer guard hairs and a thick woolly undercoat like a farmed American red fox (NARF). You can definitely tell that it's a European x NARF hybrid!
Hybrids are becoming more common in the UK and parts of Europe. In the past this was the result of farm foxes escaping/being released, but more recently it's due to pet NARFs that escape/are abandoned and breed with the native wild foxes. Some of these foxes are direct hybrids, but many are the result of hybridisation many generations back. Here's some more examples of wild platinum foxes from the UK:

What's also interesting is that she has the fawn spots on the ears commonly seen in European foxes. The exact cause of these spots is unknown, but this strongly suggests it's a distinct white spotting pattern.
