In my previous post, I mentioned that we were going out to eat at the newly opened restaurant in Sun Plaza. This is the Nan Yang Dao (南洋岛) restaurant we patronized, and boy was it packed. We were given just one menu so I gave it to mum to let her choose what she wanted. And she picked the Penang Fried Kway Teow (槟城炒粿条) I wanted to eat so I chose something else. My mum had barely eaten it when one random woman asked if the dish was good. She told her that it was indeed yummy. Stir-fried with bean sprouts, plump prawns, slices of fish cake and Chinese sausage, the kway teow were more savoury than sweet and full of wok hei. The noodles were mildly spicy but nothing we can’t handle.

Originally, this Signature Trio Mini Noodles (招牌迷你烫面) consisting of three different mini sized bowls of noodles were intended for mum but she had chosen hers. From right to left, I started off with the Pork Ball Noodle Soup Tasted like our fish ball noodle but with two springy pork balls. The yellow noodles, bean sprouts and shredded cabbage is soaked in the flavourful and wholesome broth.

The next bowl, I tried is the Penang Prawn Noodle Soup (槟城虾面) but the prawn is nowhere to be found! Instead, I get slices of pork, fishcake, bean sprouts and a quarter of an egg. Luckily, the yellow noodles were swimming in umami filled broth cooked with the extracted oil from the prawns’ head and shell.

So, this is where the prawn jumped itself into. The Seafood Curry Mee (海鲜咖喱面) had only one seafood and that is the prawn. The other so-called seafood were mainly prawn rolls or other items made from fish or prawn paste. The spicy curry cooked with coconut milk is rich and flavourful which goes well with the yellow noodles. If you are the type who likes to try many different dishes at once, be sure to order this trio of mini noodles.

To finish the meal, I had the Bear Iced Coffee Came in a small jug and topped with a cute little ice bear. I love the thick bitter yet not too sweet milk coffee. We were seated next to the glass cabinet filled with lovely and yummy looking Puff Pastry Egg Tarts Many customers were seen buying but we had to give them a miss as we were just too full at that moment. But we will order it the next time we are here.

frogs from a hidden pond and a bunny in the graveyard
in this last week i have seen a dozen blue-tailed skinks sunning on a wall, a softshell turtle laying eggs on the side of the lake, a great blue heron feeding screeching nestlings high up in the trees
written on a picture of the moon with the last ink from a dying pen, lit by the twelve hour glow stick saved years in my pack for an emergency, hung at sunset

Carol Cooks “Thai Penang Chicken Curry” And I Did Too! Her Terrific New Cookbook Is Here!
What is a cookbook? I believe the recipes in a cookbook are but a guide…depending on where you live some ingredients may not be available, and some ingredients may not be to your taste…taste is subjective we all have our own likes and dislikes I always start with a basic recipe and then most times I tweak… it could be because my oven runs hotter or colder than yours plus the lesson I learnt on my…

87 Ludlow is a relatively new bar and restaurant that offers up an ice happy hour, chock full of nice cocktails and interesting Filipino food. My wife and I stopped in for a quick meal last week. Here’s what we got: Oyster Sisig, which I didn’t get a photo of, but you can see a bit of it in the beginning of this video here (my wife is mixing the quail egg into…

I was asleep when you posted that ask but hi from a Malaysian 👋🏽! Although I live in Penang not Kuala Lumpur. Enjoy your stay here and you shd try Nasi Kandar when you are here. Very delicious rice with a lot of curry and you can choose what meats you want like chicken or squid. The one I usually go to is Nasi Kandar Pelita. Yummy!
penang!! i’ve always wanted to go there, i hear the food is delicious and the laksa there is next level. i was googling nasi kandar and there were just SO many options so thank you for the nasi kandar recommendation i’ve been dying to eat some on this trip but i haven’t had the time yet ;______; we did get some really delicious nasi lemak for takeaway though and i haven’t stopped thinking about it 🤤

I think one thing that makes Ralph so relatable to me is that he probably knows what Curry Kapitan tastes like because he had it in Penang, and eventually came to like tea mixed with coffee and condensed milk the way they make it in Hong Kong. I like to think that he picked up a taste for lemongrass, bay leaves, tamarind, and galangal that never really went away, and grinned like a boy at Christmas when the first Caribbean and Indian grocery stories opened up in his neighborhood once the windrush generation got themselves settled. He has seen the bustling port of Nagasaki in its heyday, shared a small table in a Kissaten with a Russian and dug into a plate of omurice, and docked in Singapore a few days later for some roti canai. He knows enough creole to get by in any port in the Empire: a few words in Malay mixed with Hokkien, some colloquial French of the Canadian and Caribbean variety, and a few phrases in the Mumbai dialect.
It doesn’t really go away, that cosmopolitanism. He is exiled from home, and becomes a child of colonialism, an orphan of empire, like so many others (colonizers, colonized, and the middle-men traders in between). He knows about the fifth generation Portuguese-Malayan families in Macao and third generation British-Iraqi ones in Shanghai. He sails with francophone québécois sailors in the Atlantic, with anglophone Indian sailors in the Caribbean, and anglophone Chinese sailors in the the East Indies. And he’s attended all their weddings and the weddings of their friends and families.
I too am a child of empires. I’ve tried to make a home across three continents. I like to imagine him as a character who understands my world

Penang’s Oldest Nasi Kandar Hameediyah NOW Opens @ Semua House With A Variety Of Cuisines & More
When we talk about Malaysian food culture, Nasi Kandar is practically a national treasure. Think hearty mix of white rice with rich, flavourful curries and sinful side dishes that leave us wanting more. It’s no surprise Nasi Kandar has been a go-to comfort food for generations. And, among the most iconic names tied to this dish is Hameediyah, Malaysia’s oldest Nasi Kandar establishment, serving…
