every single book I read in 2022. all 129 of them.
jesus christ
let's start with the best of the best; everything else will get listed beneath the read more because I'm not an animal. even just picking out my favorites is honestly probably going to get pretty lengthy, even though I'm trying to keep the synopses short.
batmanisagatewaydrug's noteworthy books of 2022
Complaint! (Sara Ahmed, 2021) - necessary for anyone doing diversity work in higher education, tbh
America is Not the Heart (Elaine Castillo, 2018) - achingly gorgeous novel of heartbreak and healing.
The School for Good Mothers (Jessamine Chan, 2022) - honestly? I feel very good calling this my favorite book of the entire year. sensitive, smart, chilling.
Black Feminist Thought (Patricia Hill Collins, 1990) - truly ashamed to say I didn't read this sooner. Collins' clear-eyed analysis remains crazily spot-on 30+ years later.
Hurts So Good: The Science and Pleasure of Pain on Purpose (Leigh Cowart, 2021) - I read this book so early in 2022 and literally have not stopped thinking about it since.
Batman: King Tut's Tomb (Nunzio DeFillippis, Christina Weir, José Luis García-López, and Kevin Nowlan, 2009) - dare I say the most fun I had with a comic all year.
You Made a Fool of Death with Your Beauty (Akwaeke Emezi, 2022) - a romance unlike any other. queer, fun, sexy, bold as hell, and joyfully life-affirming.
The Dangers of Smoking in Bed (Mariana Enríquez, trans. Megan McDowell, 2021) - DELICIOUSLY creepy short stories that will lurk in your brain forever.
Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century (Kim Fu, 2022) - if a more perfect short story collection exists I am yet to find it.
The World We Make (N.K. Jemisin, 2022) - I normally hesitate to include sequels on a list like this, but god DAMN Jemisin is the queen of modern spec fic for a reason.
We Do This 'Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice (Mariame Kaba, edited by Tamara K. Nopper, 2021) - excellent collection of Kaba's abolitionist writings, drawing on years of organizing experience and wisdom.
Jade City (Fonda Lee, 2017) - look out! new favorite doorstopper fantasy series alert!
Priestdaddy (Patricia Lockwood, 2017) - about the best damn memoir I've ever read. heartbreaking and hysterical in turns, poetry the whole way through.
Batman: The Long Halloween and Batman: Dark Victory (Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale, 1996 and 1999) - it's always so exciting when something much-hyped lives up to the hype in every way. Batman at his grim and moody Batmaniest with a Gotham that’s deliciously bleak.
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel, 2014) - I didn't think I'd like this book much at all, then ended up proposing on the second date. oops!
I'm Glad My Mom Died (Jennette McCurdy, 2022) - you will also be glad McCurdy's mom died, and also experience every other known human emotion along the way.
Kaikeyi (Vaishnavi Patel, 2022) - SPLENDID mythology retelling + political fantasy.
My Body (Emily Ratajkowski, 2022) - haunting haunting haunting personal essays about Ratajkowski's life as a model and subsequent alienation from her own body.
Batman: Bruce Wayne, Murderer? (Greg Rucka et al, 2002) - genuinely what can I say I'm a messy bitch and I love when the Bats are having a terrible time.
The Batman Adventures Vol. 2 #1-17 (created by Dan Slott, Ty Templeton, Rick Burchett, Terry Beatty, and Bruce Timm, 2003) - a continuation of the Batman: The Animated Series universe that frankly just fucking rules.
Little Rabbit (Alyssa Songsiridej, 2022) - a potent and erotic adult coming of age story.
The Right to Sex: Feminism in the Twenty-First Century (Amia Srinivasan, 2021) - thorny, difficult, vital essays.
Fearing the Black Body: The Racial Origins of Fat Phobia (Sabrina Strings, 2019) - jaw-droppingly thorough research into the role of fatpobia played and plays in the project of race-making.
On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous (Ocean Vuong, 2019) - yeah so it turns out no one was REMOTELY exaggerating. Vuong really is That Good.
Hench (Natalie Zina Walschots, 2020) - wild fun with a ruthless protagonist and her sex villainous beetle man boss; what more could you ask for?
Love Your Asian Body: AIDS Activism in Los Angeles (Eric C. Wat, 2021) - learning about queer history makes me feel like I’m holding something so vibrant and fragile and precious right in my little queer hand. this book is an emotional journey in such a shining way.
Never Have I Ever (Isabel Yap, 2021) - EXCITING short story collection centered on girls having Just The Weirdest Time.
and everybody else:
fiction:
Light From Uncommon Stars (Ryka Aoki, 2021)
Our Wives Under the Sea (Julia Armfield, 2022)
A Tiny Upward Shove (Melissa Chadburn, 2022)
A Prayer for the Crown-Shy (Becky Chambers, 2022)
Disorientation (Elaine Hsieh Chou, 2022)
The Laws of the Skies (Grégoire Courtois, trans. Rhonda Mullins, 2019)
The Monster Baru Cormorant (Seth Dickinson, 2018)
The Tyrant Baru Cormorant (Seth Dickinson, 2020)

Batman: One Bad Day - The Riddler (Tom King and Mitch Gerads, 2022)
Tom King, go fuck yourself. Mitch is cool though, the art slapped.

Chapter 1
Pairing: idol!Chan x Rebecca Greywood (OC)
Warnings: none for this chapter (i wanna b!tch slap patrcia though)
This is purely fiction!
Cover by: @3rachasdomesticbanana my bestie 🫰🏻
The practice room was bathed in warm golden sunlight streaming in through the tall arched windows. Mirrors covered the walls reflecting my graceful movements of as I gracefully swayed and twirled to the rhythm of the music filling the room.
My body seemed to effortlessly glide through the air each delicate step executed with precision and elegance. I wore baggy sweats and shirt for ease and comfort. My feet encased in sneakers as I watched myself in the mirror in front of me, watching every move and noting any mistakes.
The music echoes in the room as my one of my favorite songs comes on and I hype myself before starting the choreography. As "District 9" radiates through the speaker, I position myself in front of the camera. I was recording for 2 reasons: for improvement and audition. I'm going to send it to JYPE next month when auditions were going to start. I express myself through the movements communicating every emotion through my dance.
My body moved like ripples in water, my fingertips grazing the air as I effortlessly defied gravity. The whole room seemed to become an extension of myself, the space between each movement filled with an ethereal energy that captivated anyone fortunate enough to witness the artistry.
As the music reaches the end, I give it my all. All the limits and expectations, I present it through precision and movements. I had wanted this very badly. The empty room I had rented for 30 mins from a school friend just so I could record myself for the audition.
With a final elegant landing I gradually slowed my movements, my body gently coming to rest. In the silence that followed I stood there my chest rising and falling with every breath. The room was filled with a reverent hush as if everyone present understood they had witnessed something truly remarkable.
Opening my eyes my gaze met my own reflection in the mirror. A soft smile played upon my lips a mixture of satisfaction and determination. The dance was over for now but the fire within me burned brighter than ever.
As I finish packing everything, my phone chimes, indicating that I had recieved a text message. Reaching for my phone, I see that it's my dad wanting to know when I will be home from med school. Rolling my eyes, I sigh and text back that I will be home by 8. I take a look around the room again and a blissful moment lingers before exiting. I just had to survive a few more months till I recieve an acceptance from JYPE. Or I should say IF I recieve it.
As I exit the building, I get a text from my best friend, Luna asking me if I had submitted my audition yet. I couldn't help but smile. At least I have one person in my life who believes in me. I text her back, letting her know I will facetime her later tonight.
-----------------------------------------------------------
But as soon as I get inside my house, I'm greeted with a slap to the face. Holding my face in shock, I turn to look at the culprit. It's my step-mother, Patricia. "You're a disgrace."
"What the hell?" I asked, glaring at her.
"Does your father know?" Patricia asked.
I blink at her in confusion. What is she up to this time? "What?"
"My son saw you flirting with a man."
"Okay. And?" I question. And I just know she's going to make this into a huge deal.
"Don't you have any shame?"
"Yeah, right," I scoff. "And what is it exactly he told you?"
"That you were flirting with a guy in class." Patricia replied.
"These days ASKING for help in class is considered flirting?" Now my dad and step-brother have also stepped out of their rooms. As I glance at them, I smirk at Patricia before saying, "Maybe next time ask your precious son what he does in class when he's not there half of the time?"
Looking at the annoyed and a shocked expression on her face, I'm satisfied enough so I walk straight to my room, avoiding my dad trying to talk to me. I close the door and walk over to my bed, immediately laying down. I close my eyes and a sigh comes out of me. I can't wait to get out of this hell hole and finally make my dream come true.
Ever since I was 13, I knew I wanted to be on the stage and perform. I always had a knack to watch and copy dances so that I could get better at it. I also knew how to sing but it needed work. When I turned 18, I wanted to be an idol. That's when I discovered the k-pop groups and watched a lot of their music videos and cariety shows. I learned a lot from them, including their dances. And along the way, I discovered Stray Kids. I watched their survival show and immediately fell in love with them. You could say that I became a fan of them predebut and rooted for them when they got to debut.
There was just something about them that no matter what I was feeling, they always managed to cheer me up. There were days when I was mentally and physically drained, watching their shows always put a smile to my face. From the youngest to the oldest, they all had their own personalities which made them more loveable and fore, they were the most precious human beings. It had been over a year now since I started following them.
I found every opportunity to research which company was a better option to audition and looked at their auditoon dates. Some were better, some weren't. And some had very good aspects but disn't fall under what I was looking for. So when I landed on JYPE, the same company Stray Kids were under, I made a choice to decision.
The audtion requirements were sing and dance. I had already recorded the dance. It was just the singing part that was left. Looking at my phone, I go to my messages to text my best friend.
R: oi, bestie
I wait for her reply.
L: what?
R: can i record myself singing at your house?
L: are you seriously asking me that?
R: yes?
L: girl, you lucky you're pretty
Chuckling, I look up and check myself in my mirror. I had big eyes, small mouth and high cheek bones but overall, I was just an average girl. I look down at my phone again just as her message comes through.
L: you can come on Friday. That's my day off.
R: thank you. Love you bestie<3
L: love you too
Smiling, I put my things away and start getting ready for bed. One major part about my life ever since I became a teenager is skin care. No matter time of day, I don't ever skip it which is why I have next to flawless skin. As I'm about to start the first step, my phone rings. When I see the name on the screen, I immediately accept.
"What's up?"
"Are you free tomorrow?" Luna asks.
"Why?"
"A friend of mine is going tomorrow on her first date and she wants to leave a good first impression." I roll my eyes at her statement.
"And you want me to do her makeup and hair?" I ask, taking out my favorite skincare products and putting them in front of me.
"Yes?"
I roll my eyes and lean back in my chair. "Alright but you owe me this time."
"Sure. It'll be my treat!" Luna replies.
That was another passion of mine. Makeup. In high school, I saw a bunch of videos on youtube and ever since then I've had a knack of doing makeup flawlessly on others. Myself? Not so much because I like to let my skin breathe. As I finish my skin care followed by toner and moisturizer, I open my laptop and plug in my phone with it. I download the dances from today and compile them in one. Once I started editing the video, I lost track of time.
When I finally finished, I look at my phone and realize it's very late. Deciding to head to bed and sleep, I recieve a notification on my phone. It's from youtube. I gasp and I click the notification as it opens the app and I see the person who I adore so much and always wait to see his lives on vlive.
"Hello, everybody. It's your boy, Christopher."
And I'm in love all over again. It been a while since I've seen that pretty boy. I watch as he goes on to explain about his days and how he's loving all of his fans showing support to him and all of Stray Kids. This past year, he has given me so much strength and motivation. It's like whenever I have a bad day, like today for example, he turns up and lights up making all of my stress go away.
It had been only a year and a half but I couldn't keep up with all of their shows and performances, let alone their first concerts. Some days it got so bad for me that I would end up writing songs. And now that song book sits right with my other books, abandoned. Looking back at my phone, I see him smiling and laughing. The corner of my mouth turns upwards and my night instantly turns better.
As the live comes to an end, he says his goodbye waving at the camera. As he ends the live, I have this huge smile on my face because even though I was planning to audition under the same company as him, I had always pictured scenarios in my mind if I had happen to interact with him at any point. Many of the scenarios were good but I would always get shy because it's Bang Chan of Stray Kids. Who wouldn't get shy around him?
My phone buzzes. I grab it and see a text from Luna.
L: are you sleeping? Because you have to make sure you're on time tomorrow.
R: Yes, mom.
Rolling my eyes, I place my phone on charge and snuggle in my blankets. Sighing, I close my eyes and drift off to dream about a 20 year old australian.
-----------------------------------------------------------
It was the next day and I had gotten everything ready for Luna's friend. The table in front of me had makeup brushes, foundation, concealers, eyeshadow and the whole system. I had saved all the money from doing a part time job to buy all the makeup and hair products.
The door opens and in walks, Luna with her friend. I glance at her friend, she's got gorgeous long hair and a small face structure with flawless skin. "This is, Ella, a colleague of mine."
"Hi, Ella. Nice to meet you." I smile, although she couldn't see it since I was wearing a face mask. I always wear it if I'm working on clients with makeup.
"Hi, Luna has told me so much about you," Ella says, as I motion for her to sit on the chair in front of a mirror.
"Good things I hope," I say glancing at Luna. "So I hear you have a date today?"
"Yes, he's picking me up around 5."
"Anything particular you want for your makeup and hair?" I ask, as I start preparing the products.
"Why not surprise me? I'm already wearing the clothes for the date," Ella replies as points towards her clothing. It was cute floral dress with wedge high heels.
"Alright. I'm going to prep your skin first then start on the actual makeup then the hair will come at the end."
Nodding her approval, I start working on her face. Luna sits in the back and watches me work my magic. I decide to focus more on her eyes first then move on to the rest of her face. Deciding to give her a slight of smokey eye with a hint of color and subtle eyelashes with minimal eyeliner. As for her face, I decided to give her a glowy look that also doesn't feel heavy. Leaving the lips for the very last step, I spray the makeup spray all over her race and move on to her hair next.
"Hmm, do you usually style your hair?" I ask as I lightly run my fingers through her hair.
"Not really, just loose curls here and there." Ella replied.
So that's exactly what I do. I give her long hair loose curls before spraying hair spray to set them. Standing back, I admire my work and once I'm satisfied, I head over to my station. My fingers hovers over the lip products as I pick a pink and a nude color. I mix the colors on my lip pallete with a lip brush before I apply it on Ella's lips.
"Alright, Ella." I said smiling as I scrape the rest of the lip product from the lip pallete to a container, small enough to fit into her handbag. "You're done."
Ella stands up and is immediately in awe as she looks at herself in the mirror. "Oh my god. My makeup and hair look so good. Are in you a makeup artist by any chance?"
"Uh, no. It's just my hobby."
"Might as well make it your job." Luna mumbles in the back and I give her a look.
"Here," I give Ella the small container. "For when you need a touch-up."
"Thank you!" Ella says, smiling.
"I hope your date goes well!" I say smiling, as I start packing my stuff. Ella leaves in high spirits leaving Luna and I in the room as I finish packing my things. I look at the time on my phone. It's almost time for my class.
"Okay. I need to leave right now if I want to make it.to class on time." I sling my bag over my shoulders.
"Girl, when are you going to stop going to med school?"
"Not this again," I sigh at her comment. "Because I have no other choice, Luna."
Luna scunches her nose and says,"Yes, you do."
"What?"
"I mean the only thing that's stopping you is your parents. Your dad is forcing you to be a doctor when you don't want to. He disregards your feelings about everything. You can always learn something on the side." Luna looked at me as I blinked back at her.
"Where is this coming from? I have enough on my plate as it is!"
"Look, if your audition gets accepted, how are you going to going to communicate with the people over there?" Luna asks, crossing her arms.
"Are you suggesting I learn Korean?" I ask.
"Why not?"
I scoff. "Well, for one, my audition hasn't been accepted because submission dates are next month."
Luna rolls her eyes and walks over to me. "You know you WILL get in."
I highly doubt I will but I can never say that to her because she'll bite my ear off for days. I hum in response. "I have 2 classes today so I'll see you later girlie."
"Bye." Luna says waving me off. I exit her house and head to the bus station. I would've used my car if it wasn't for my father selling it for money. It was the biggest fight I had with him as of yet.
It was also the day I found out about my dad's affair with Patricia. She was the one who told him to sell my car so he can give the money to her. She also came with a son from her previous marriage. Steven was a major pain in the ass, even though he was older than me by 3 years. On many occasions, they both plotted against me just to get me kicked out.
But I had promised myself that I would get through med school, even though I hated it, and audition for JYPE. And I told myself that if either one fails, I would keep auditioning till I get in. But fear was always there. It would always be there.
I get to class on time. Soon, the class starts and I start taking notes. I never wanted to go to medical school. It was forced on my by my dad. Whereas my dream was to perform on stage and he hated the idea of me in the spotlight. He told me that only people with no actual jobs perform on stage and didn't believe that it was an actual job, despite me showing him evidence many times.
Plus I had a knack of passing each class with straight A's ever since high school. Even Luna was surprised. But it never made me happy. And it never would.
-----------------------------------------------------------
When I walk inside the house, I hear hushed voices which suddenly stops when the three of them I come come in view. My immediate reaction was confusion. Till I saw her with a smirk on her face.
"Are you going to be auditioning to JYPE?" My father, Jack, asks.
My eyes widen. How the fuck does he know? My brain scrambles to find the answer and it all comes to the only conclusion. Patricia and Steven. "You had no right to go through my things!" I yell at her.
"Rebecca! Don't you dare talk to her like that!" Jack yells back. She just wants to look out for you."
I scoff as I roll my eyes. "Sure. She just wants to look out for me by plotting against me to have me kicked out."
"Do you see that, Jack? Do you see how she's talking to me?" Patricia whines. This woman is asking for it.
"Don't talk to my mom like that," Steven chimes in.
"Oh back off, mama's boy." I say, annoyed at all of them. He makes an annoyed expression and takes a step towards where I'm standing, towering me. But I don't back down and narrow my eyes at him, head held high. If there's one thing I'm good at, it's intimidation. I'm not afraid to get into a fight, even though I had no experience in fighting. Well, except one time where Luna's ex and I was involved. He left crying and never came back.
Just as he's about to say something, my dad interjects. "Rebecca." I look at him. "This fantasy of yours ends right now." He reaches into his pocket and brings out a USB. I gasp because I recognize it. It's got pink flowers on it.
"Dad, please," I plead. This was my only chance to get out. To freedom.
What he does next, shatters my heart in pieces. He drops it in a glass of water as I watch the scene unfold. That was my only copy. I had totally wiped everything from my laptop. I glance at Patricia and Steven, smug look on their face enjoying every part of this.
"You have exams coming up, you don't need distractions."
Glaring at dad, I realized something. There was no out of this hell hole. I was going to stuck here forever. I have no way out. Without saying anything, I storm into my room and lock the door. Walking over to my window, I crack it open and climb out to go up on the house roof. I found out about the house roof few months ago when I wanted to blow off some steam.
I sit on the roof and take out my phone, pressing Luna's number. Tears starts to form in my eyes, blurring my vision. "Hey, girl. I was just about to call you. Ella had the best time ever on her date. She asked to let you know."
I try my best to sound as normal as possible. "Okay."
"What's wrong?" Luna asked. "Did something happen?"
"No." I sniffle, wiping my face as tears fall down my cheeks.
"Rebecca Greywood. I know you. Tell me."
So I tell her everything. She was the only person in the world who understood me. She always knew when something happened. She was THE person for me. Even in high school, she was always there for me when I needed her. She was there for me when my mom died because if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't be alive today.
"Okay," Luna said, after listening to me. "This is what you're going to do."
"What?" I say, wiping my nose with my hoodie.
"You're smart. You're young. You're capable. You're strong. You're going to learn Korean and apply for makeup certifications."
I blink at her response. Was she serious? "Luna, I can't. You know I can't. Besides, I have no money for it."
"I'll lend you the money. That bitch always has an eye on your bank account." Luna replied.
"What? Luna, no. I'm not doing it."
"Do you want to stay there forever? Do you want to stay in a place where you can't be happy? Where you're miserable all the time with no freedom?"
Okay. She was making good points. But I hesitated. "But Luna, that was all I had. That was my ticket out of here."
"No. That's not all you have. You have more you than you know."
I wipe my nose with my hoodie's sleeve. "What are you saying?"
"Meet at my house in 10 minutes." She hangs up and I look at phone, dumbfounded. What is this girl on about? Curious to find out, I climb down and safely get in my room. Grabbing my bag, I head out, ignoring my dad calling my name behind me. Once outside, I walk in the direction of Luna's home.
A/N: its finally here! :) chapter 2 next week!
