My entry into @brain-rot-hour's InuGang Exchange 2023 for ActuallySango! I had a blast writing this, it is not something I usually explore, and it was great to write something like this. I hope you enjoy it!
Whispers in the Wind
Summary: It has been 500 years since Kagome jumped back down the well to be with Inuyasha. A messenger waits to see her family, and is joined by a surprising guest.

For the first time since 2020, I am feeling the urge to read InuKag fics again???
This all started in June when I FINALLY read the iconic "Freak Attraction" by our esteemed @artistefish (which is PHENOMENAL AND AMAZING BTW PLEASE GO READ IT), but then, just now, I saw that the Smut Queen herself, @keichanz had posted new smut...... 👀👀👀
Aaaaaand suddenly I went hunting for other smutty oneshots to add to my "Marked for Later" fics. For the first time in AGES. Like. Um. Holy shit????
[Ramblings about my "Inuyasha history post-2020" below cut. Tl;dr: I'm lowkey Shook that my love for Inuyasha and InuKag fics is finally, slowly coming back 🥹💕]
Here's the rundown: 2020 happened. I went into quarantine with my parents. I was determined to finally devour a BUNCH of Inuyasha fics I kept meaning to read, and at first I did with great gusto..... but..... as April 2020 crept along, my interest began to wane and depression seized a hold of me.
Then Yashahime was announced. The fandom imploded. I felt nothing. No interest, no worries, no intrigue. NOTHING. It would've scared me if I was capable of feeling it.
Oh eventually, I felt a mild amusement at all of the squabbling and ship wars and all that nonsense (and spawned a whole fucking series of memes as a result lmaooooo). But my love for the fandom/fics had more or less snuffed out. Which sucked for a number of reasons, not least of which were "shit, most of my WIPs are for this fandom fuckfuckfuckfuck" LMAO 🙃
Depressing shit aside, I dove back HARD into the Disney fanfic side of things, on top of other anime titles and old fandoms like Harry Potter. I moved on to other fandoms, partially due to feeling embittered at the Inuyasha fandom for already making my depression over my lack of interest EVEN WORSE with all the in-fighting over Yashahime (which btw, for the record, is NOT a particularly bad show. It's not a GOOD show, per se, I don't have any strong feelings for it either way, but it's NOT the Antichrist™ like fans were making it out to be, sheesh >.> It's just another mediocre sequel for a classic-but-not-particularly-amazing-original-series. Shocking, I know. Moving on)
The only thing keeping me sane about Inuyasha was watching it with my fiancé, from Nov. 2020-Sept. 2021. His delightful commentary breathed life into the series like you wouldn't BELIEVE lmao 🤣
Eventually.... I felt the desire to write again. But it was HARD. 😭
After Shameless was completed in April of 2020, I felt.... empty of Inuyasha fic writing. By a miracle, I managed to update my Big Three WIPs (An Unexpected Encounter -> June 2020; Inuyasha: Prince of Thieves -> July 2020 & Sept. 2022; and Shards of the Sea -> June 2021 & Sept. 2022), but the gaps between updates kept widening, and I only worked on them because they were already partially written/published. I even ended up archiving older ficlets into Tied Together and Bonds Across Time, but had to resist the urge to delete everything and start afresh SEVERAL times since 2021 (which, coincidentally, was around the time the fandom was tearing itself apart over Yashahime bullshit and by bullshit I mean innocuous junk people were losing their goddamn minds over ugh.... 😒)
The handful of other fics I punched out for other fandoms were small, and only posted briefly in the summers of 2020 and 2022.
The latter summer was thanks to my first InuKag written smut in 2 years: Sinful Symphonies.
So, yay! Finally getting a feel for writing again, both for Inuyasha and in general! But I still felt utterly detached from other Inuyasha fics, not because of the writers (are you KIDDING me, half of the reason it was hard to distance myself from the fandom was because of the AMAZING TALENT in this fandom ugggghhh 😭), but because of my personal, complicated feelings with the fandom and series as a whole.
But then I binge-watched the series by myself this May. And finally, decided to buckle down and read Freak Attraction, which I have been meaning to read LONG before 2020, and thus, it became my first Inuyasha bookmarked fic on AO3 in almost 3 years, and first "new" Inuyasha fave as whole since August 2021.
My last Inuyasha bookmarked fic on AO3 was on Nov. 1, 2020 (on ff.net, I read two small MirSan smut fics in August 2021, but these are outliers; I really could not bring myself to read more than those -.-).
My last InuKag bookmarked smut on AO3 was April 7, 2020.
My last REVIEWS I left for an Inuyasha fic (besides the aforementioned fics) were from June-August 2021 for a couple of updated faves (namely Keichanz's Iconic You Rescued Me, which was a ROLLERCOASTER OF FEELS, LEMME TELL YOU).
And now. NOW. AT LAST. THREE WHOLE YEARS after 2020 sucked the joy of Inuyasha fandom/fic from me.... I want to try again. I want to read more again.
Even if it's only a little bit, I would like to find joy here again. 🥺💕

I noticed that kagome/inukag fans still attack inukik/kikyou fans for their opinion in their properly tagged posts or make posts complaining about how you can hate kagome is kikyou. But when they attack Kikyou and inukik, then silence then they don't mind that kagome is the reincarnation of kikyou and it's as if they attack kagome too. They do it right, we do it wrong.

Though I have nothing new to offer for the InuKag Week "bickering" theme, take this reblog of my post explaining why I love InuKag bickering to pieces. 🙏
In today's episode of Shut Up Robin, Nobody Cares:
InuKag bickering is so good because it's deeply telling of how comfortable InuYasha and Kagome are with each other at almost every stage of their relationship.
For starters, contrary to seemingly popular belief, arguing does not inherently signal dysfunction. It can sometimes signal the opposite: it demonstrates a level of intimacy and trust in your relationship that you are able to openly disagree with your loved one. You are not afraid of conflict because you know it won't break the relationship. In my experience, at least, it's shaky relationships that avoid conflict at all costs. When there's not enough emotional security with each other to openly disagree without fear/anxiety, open conflict never happens. That's why "arguing like an old married couple" is a cliché: it's the people who've built trust and security who will bicker like that.
I mean, don't get me wrong, it doesn't feel great to be in conflict with a loved one, even in a secure relationship. But being able to navigate conflict together in a way that eventually leads toward understanding and compromise is the sign of a strong relationship. Arguing is often a step in that process.
Which is why I find InuKag arguments absolutely, lip-smackingly delicious.
When they first meet, their arguments have the distinct flavor of, "I don't like you and I don't care what you think about me." Which is an excellent vintage tbh, full-bodied flavor with refreshing tartness. 👌👌 There's something so intrinsically entertaining about watching early-series InuKag butt heads, all the while knowing they eventually get married. And because early-series InuKag doesn't especially care about the other person's opinion of them, they don't hold back: there's no politeness barrier between them, there's no equivocating or filtering. They just have at it. They're not afraid to be themselves around each other, even when they dislike each other.
Then when their friendship begins to form—stage two InuKag 😁—their bond is forged from the two-pronged fire of 1) having each other's backs in life-or-death situations, and 2) experiencing the humdrum quotidian moments that come with traveling together all day, every day for long stretches of time. I've talked about this before, but I love how they know all the dumb little things about each other that you only learn from prolonged proximity: they know the timbre of each other's snores at night; they know how long the other can go without food before hangry-ness rears its head; they know which posture signals irritation or exhaustion, which facial expression signals daydreaming contemplation or a playful mood; they know which jokes will get a laugh and which insults will get the sharpest glances; the little intimacies abound!
By the friendship stage, InuKag bickering takes on a slightly different flavor. There's still that unfiltered, no-holds-barred vibe about them (because they're so used to being blunt with each other), but it also has the tenor of easy familiarity. Friends falling into the same low stakes argument they've had a hundred times already. There's not often any real heat or tension to the bickering, it's more like rote muscle memory. And when they do have real arguments, with real tension and emotional stakes?? It's delicious precisely because there are emotional stakes now! Goodbye, "I don't care what you think about me," hello, "I care so much what you think and I hate it and you're going to hear about it." It's still arguing InuKag, but with different emotional fuel sparking the arguments. Now there's affection and trust underpinning their unfiltered way with each other. It's mmm mmm good! I can eat it up all day.
And as the series progresses, and InuKag begin to develop obvious romantic interest in each other—stage three InuKag, yes it's terminal—the flavor of the arguments gets deeper because now those emotional stakes? They're even higher. And yet despite the higher stakes and the messy complications, they're still not afraid to butt heads. They're not afraid to be blunt and hash things out. I love this example of InuYasha's hack-and-slash style of conflict resolution. If there's a wall between him and resolving the tension, he'll just punch his way through it. 😂 Another favorite of mine is this banger scene where Kagome bluntly calls InuYasha out on his jealousy.
But probably my favorite stage three InuKag fight scene is this one, from chapter 310:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Full scene here.)
Man, it's so good! Kagome—after taking pains to save Kikyo, who then essentially taunts her for it—starts to feel angry and resentful and then wallops InuYasha with those feelings. (Before any haters pipe in: characters need to make mistakes sometimes. This is one such occasion. Let the 15-year-old girl character make a mistake ffs.) And what does InuYasha do? He sticks around so they can hash it out. The best panels in this chapter are Kagome thinking, "He probably hates me now," only for her to look up and see him right beside her. He can handle her mistakes and flaws, because he knows Kagome. They've spent 300 chapters building trust in each other, and we see the fruit of that here. InuYasha knows very well that Kagome cares for him—cares so much that she's risked her life for him many times over by now, and cares so much that she just saved her own romantic rival partly for InuYasha's sake (but largely because she's just a good person). I think that's why he handles this moment with pretty good composure. He knows Kagome doesn't actually hate him, briefly hurtful as that comment surely was. So he waits until she's processed her feelings a bit more, and they talk it out. (While we're here: I really like that he's sitting close to her but is facing away from her, like he's trying to give her the space/privacy she needs to process her feelings without actually leaving her alone... ugh I love it.)
Notice how, even in the midst of this fight, they start checking in with each other, putting the other person's interest before their own. Kagome sincerely urges InuYasha not to "hold back," the subtext of which reads to me: "Don't let my outburst tie you down, please do what you need to do." InuYasha responds in kind (his subtext reads to me: "Be honest, don't just put on a brave face for me") and also reassures Kagome's underlying anxiety. When he says, "You saved Kikyo, right? Then she'll be fine, I'm not going after her," he's speaking directly to the source of Kagome's insecurity—he's telling her in no uncertain terms that concern for Kikyo's safety was his only motive for seeking her out. Now that he knows Kikyo has been healed and isn't in imminent danger, he's not going after her. Again, he is intentionally addressing what he knows to be the source of Kagome's outburst when he says, "You healed Kikyo? Then I don't need to see her." To me, his message is pretty clear: "I wasn't looking for Kikyo for the reasons you think."
Like! Look at them! Openly and honestly communicating! Messily sharing their feelings! Resolving conflict and talking shit out! They've come so far. 🥹
These stage three InuKag fights feel different than their early-series fights, and they should! InuKag have built trust and love, but with that love comes vulnerability. It's the people we love who have the power to hurt us most. So even while InuKag have fundamental trust in each other, they're both aware that their feelings come with greater potential to hurt each other. And watching them navigate that tension and that duality together? MMM MMM GOOD.
Like truly, InuKag fights at every stage of their relationship are my favorite thing, it's all such good food.

Please note, the winner ban only applies to the first place winner(s) in each division; second and third place winners will be eligible to be nominated again in the next term.
As this term comes to a close, FeudalConnection will be taking a short hiatus. This time is always spent reviewing the process and seeing what can be revamped for next term.
An immense thank you to everyone who voted on next term's roulette categories!
Roulette Fanfiction Category for Term 3 2024 will be Best Friendship Portrayal. This is defined as: A story that has a primary relationship between two characters that have qualities of trust and intimacy. Revolves around a strong bond and mutual affection.
Roulette Fanart Category for Term 3 2024 will be Best Improved Artist. This is defined as: Two illustrations of the same artwork that showcase the improvement an artist has made. The most recent image of the set should be posted within the last three years, and it must be a redraw of one of the artist's older works.
Roulette Romance Category for Term 3 2024 will be Best MirSan Romance. This will be a category for both Fanart and Fanfiction.
For Fanfiction, it will be defined as: Stories that have developed a believable romance between Miroku and Sango. "Believable" is subjective, and it is up to those nominating/voting to draw their own line on that quantifier and vote their "Best". This includes canon universe and AU/AR settings.
For Fanart, it will be defined as: Any romantic depiction of Miroku and Sango.
Due to low participation, we will be removing the Best SessKag Romance categories for both Fanfiction and Fanart moving forward. However, SessKag will be introduced into the Romance Roulette category for future terms. The original Best Romance categories will remain, so all non-InuKag pairings, including LGBTQ+, can be nominated into that category. All other pairings will be up for voting again next term.
We will officially be back in full swing September 1st! We will still be around in case you have questions or concerns, but feel free to take this time to read new fanfiction and find new fanart. We strongly encourage everyone to review/comment/reblog so to spread the love of this fandom around.
Want to stay immersed in the Inuyasha fandom? Head on over and join our Discord server! Or follow @inuyasha-events to stay up-to-date on all the current and upcoming fandom events!
We also want to give the biggest thank you to the beautiful and wonderful @elevenharbor for gifting us her time and talent with creating banners for the fandom over these last 6 terms. We have adored each piece she has created and were always blown away with what she came up with next. However, she's stepping down for now, and in her place we are welcoming a new banner creator for next term. Please give Eleven a big thank you for her many creations over the years and send her off with lots of love!
As the day gets closer to the start of the third term of 2024, we will be keeping everyone in the loop when it comes to changes and updates. Thank you all again for making this such a wonderful experience! See you soon!

Huh. Never thought about it that way, but your absolutely right!!!!
Tumblr media
Something about both Inuyasha and Kagome being torn between the past and the future – only for him the past is grief and moving on is the future while for her moving on is going back to the past and staying in the future is to grief the life she left behind – and then making opposite choices to be together: Inuyasha choosing the future, choosing Kagome and Kagome choosing the past, choosing Inuyasha.

inukag's conversation in ch 176... yea that one
This scene at the well in Ch 176, when Kagome asks to stay by Inuyasha, meant a lot to me… so I decided to do a whole ass formal translation for myself (which you can read at the way bottom, but it's probably not too different from what's already out there.)
While translating, I came across 3 details from the original text that I felt were super important 🤧
Tumblr media Tumblr media
① Everyone knows Inuyasha said that he must "give Kikyo his life" in the official Viz translation. Yes, in the original text, Inuyasha says:
命懸けで応えなくちゃならねえ。 In return, I must stake my life for Kikyo.
But that bolded part implies that staking his life for Kikyo is not something he necessarily wants to do out of his own free will, but something that he must do beyond his own will, if that makes sense. Right here, Inuyasha conveys clearly how he feels about the matter.
If he meant to say that he chose this out of his own volition, he would've said something like "...なくちゃいけない" which implies a will out of choice... But no, he said ならない, which implies it's "out of his control", so that gives clear insight to his feelings. He's not doing this because he wants to. He wants to stay with Kagome if he could, but he thinks his duty binds his fate to Kikyo, so therefore, this must be so.
+
② Usually, Kagome is translated saying (to Inuyasha) "I want you to live." But I noticed something. She says:
"生きててほしい" ....not just "生きてほしい".
You might think, "Wha? That extra little word changes things?" HAHA well, if you care to know why... yes... bc she's using the present progressive form of that verb. So, I feel there's something missing in that translation.
Kagome doesn't just want Inuyasha to live (as in "be alive"), she wants him to keep on living. She wants to see him live past his trauma, to not give up his life. So, this is a bit of an interpretation, but I personally would translate what she's saying as "I want you to live on." Like when we wish for a friend going through hard times to not succumb to darkness :(
③ Finally, Sunrise had Kagome say something different in her final monologue (wow, what a surprise). (Note, Viz actually did translate this appropriately in the manga.)
In the anime, she just says...
楽しんでほしい。 I want you to be happy.
It's cute, but in the manga, she says...
楽しいことがあってもいい。 -> literally: It's okay to have happiness. -> It's okay (for you) to feel happy.
She's reassuring Inuyasha that it's alright to feel happiness, presumably despite his survivor's guilt. He told her at the start of their conversation, "But… to feel happy, to laugh, I shouldn't be doing these things." This is a response to that. It's so sweet.
+++
THAT'S IT!! There was A LOT of weight to this scene. It made me ugly cry until my eyes got swollen lol...
(if you'd like to read my full translation of their conversation, it is right here below~)
Tumblr media
Note: I tried to translate as close to the original nuance of the Japanese text, so the sentence structure may sound unnatural at times.
(SFX: refreshing breeze)
Inuyasha: Kagome...
(Kagome sees him and begins to speak.)
Kagome: I thought about this the whole time I was back home. About you, Kikyo, and me…
Inuyasha: Kagome… I…
Kagome: I know. I know what your feelings are; that's why… I thought I can't be here anymore.
Inuyasha: Kagome… until I met you, I couldn't trust anyone. But you cried for my sake, you were always by my side. When I'm with you, Kagome, I feel happy. My heart is at ease. But… to feel happy, to laugh, I shouldn't be doing these things.
Inuyasha: Kikyo… she followed after me in death. In return, I must stake my life for Kikyo.
Kagome: I understand. I can't compete against her... because I still live.
Kagome: I thought about her a whole lot too. Kikyo and I, we're so completely different. Even with all this stuff about how I'm her reincarnation… well, anyway, I'm not Kikyo. My heart is my own.
Kagome: But you see, there is one thing. How Kikyo is feeling... I get it. I feel the same. We both want to see you, Inuyasha, one more time.
Kagome: You know, somehow, when I thought, "Don't Kikyo and I share the same feelings?", I became a little more at ease. Like, our feelings of wanting to see you are the same, aren't they... So, I gathered up the courage, and came to see you.
Inuyasha: Kagome… As for me, I wanted to see you too. But…
Kagome: I want to be with you*, Inuyasha. To forget about you, I can't do it.
(*T/N: She does not mean "be with you" in a romantic sense. She means to literally be near him, to exist by him, etc.)
Inuyasha: Kagome… what's the best way for me to respond to you?
Kagome: Inuyasha, let me ask you just one thing?
Inuyasha: Yeah…
Kagome: Is it okay if I stay with you?
(SFX: surprise...)
Inuyasha: You'll… stay for me?
Kagome: Yeah… (she smiles.)
Inuyasha and Kikyo's bond absolutely cannot be severed. That... I understand. But you know, Inuyasha? I thought about it… Our meeting was not just a coincidence either.
I want you to live on, Inuyasha.
Kagome: Let's go, Inuyasha.
Inuyasha: O-Oh, yeah, okay...
It's okay to feel happiness. I want you to laugh a lot. I don't know what I can do for you, but…
I will always be by your side.

Another quick art and ficlet for @kagomes-hanakotobamatsuri ! This one focused on Week 3, Fertility and I used the Yellow Rose (new beginnings) as my inspiration flower. I started writing this while I was pregnant 2 years ago, but didn’t get around to finishing it until now.
Title: Potatoes Word Count: 1113 Rating: T Pairing: Inukag Warnings: Pregnancy
Try as she might, Kagome couldn’t help the uncontrollable (and unreasonable) flood of negative emotions that came with her unfulfilled pregnancy craving.
Wacdonald’s, of all things. Of course she was craving one of the most unobtainable foods possible in Sengoku and one of the easiest to find in her modern Tokyo.
She didn’t really feel regret at leaving the modern world behind, not with Inuyasha and a life of friends and nature to surround her, and yet…
Kagome found herself seething in angry tears. Angry at her body, angry at her attitude, angry at life. While she was always an emotional person, this hormone-induced storm was driving her crazy. She felt everything stronger, and no amount of logic or sleep was pulling her out of it because when she really really thought about it, it was all so unfair. She was raging at the world for making her choose between one family and another. The past was her future, and the future was now her past. But why did she have to choose? Why couldn’t she have a child with the love of her life and introduce her baby to her mother and grandfather and brother? Her righteous sorrow and her selfish cravings swirled into an indistinguishable mass of feelings. One second there was joy, another pain, the next irrepressible annoyance. She was guilty that she felt this way, upset as a tantruming toddler over a greasy burger and salty fried potatoes.
And ultimately she was sad to be so far from her mother.
Her thoughts turned to her poor husband.
Inuyasha had been very sweet since she’d gotten back, and her pregnancy ramped up his doting completely. From warming her bath, to fetching her the ripest fruits, to building her the most comfortable approximation of a mattress possible, she felt spoiled and grateful. But her pregnancy-addled brain and hormonal body had her feeling so at odds with her heart. She loved being here. She loved her friends and the family they found in each other. She loved Inuyasha.
Yet she longed for the crepes at the Shinjuku station mall, ice cream from a stand, steak from the grocery store cooked at home… her mouth was practically a waterfall at the thought. But by far the biggest craving was a Wacdonald’s cheeseburger with extra cheese and a side of fries dipped in ketchup. Make that two sides of fries. She could cry thinking about it, which she knew was stupid.
It didn’t help that so many things made her feel nauseous. She’d helped out with pregnant mothers before, giving them herbs to help, learning from Kaede the rough timeline. She’d given reassurances and her best empathy, but in the throes of morning sickness Kagome wished to strangle her past naivety—and as much as she adored Kaede, the woman never actually had to go through pregnancy.
Sango helped the most, understanding her anger, giving practical advice to give her the slightest relief. After all, carrying the twins had been an ordeal.
But Kagome was tired of ginger root and plain rice.
She was tired in general. It has been such a joy to find out she was pregnant, and the first few weeks were a breeze. Then the morning sickness kicked in and subsequently kicked her ass. Morning sickness. God, it was unending sickness. Any time of the day sickness! She huddled under her blanket, willing the fatigue and nausea away.
Then Inuyasha emerged from the door with her requested pile of potatoes. His look was apprehensive. He wanted to help her in any way he could, knowing that his wife often repressed cries for her mother.
“I scrubbed ‘em already, and the pan’s good to go.”
“Thank you, Inuyasha.”
“I’ll cut ‘em too. It’s supposed to be like sticks, right?”
She nodded. “Not too thin though.” Her husband was really good with a knife. She might be envious of his skills if he wasn’t such a good partner.
Before he could start chopping, she stopped him. “Wait! Maybe cubes are better. They’ll move around the pan more easily.”
“‘Kay,” he replied easily.
Kagome stifled a groan as she slowly got up. Inuyasha had set the pan to heat already, so all she had to do was add the oil.
“This look alright?” Inuyasha asked, checking in with her about the size.
“Those look good.”
Something about the sound of him chopping away triggered something. Everything triggered some emotion or another—but the domestic simplicity of their lives came at her full force as she heard the rhythmic sounds of their knife hitting their wooden chopping block.
“It’s wonderful,” she whimpered, tears gathering in her eyes.
“Woah, woah!” The hanyou turned around in concern, his hand immediately at her back to try to comfort her.  “Are you alright?”
“Yeah,” she lifted her head and sobbed, unable to hold it back. “It’s just the hormones, but I do think you’re wonderful. I’m so lucky to have you!” she wailed.
His entire being was on high alert since she got pregnant, and even though he knew emotional outbursts were bound to happen, he still went into overdrive trying to make sense of it and fix whatever he could. “T-thanks.”
“Thank you for getting me potatoes so we could try making fries. I’m sorry I’m probably going to hate it or throw it up but it’s the closest thing I have to Wacdonald’s.” She wiped her face with her sleeve and sniffled.
“I told you, woman, I’ll do anything I can. I’m sorry we don’t got wako’s or whatever here.”
“I’m being unreasonable.”
“It’s normal. You know it is. I know it is. You shoulda seen Miroku while Sango was having her cravings. Damn near swindled every ingredient from every vendor in every town just to find something she couldn’t remember the name of.”
Kagome gave a watery laugh. “That makes me feel better.”
“We’ll make something good, and if you hate it and retch I’ll make you two something else.”
‘Us two,’ Kagome thought in awe, placing her hand on her belly. “We appreciate you.” She sent him a smile and got on her tiptoes to kiss his jaw.
“Yeah, yeah. If you’re done, I’m going to go finish cutting now,” he brushed off, trying to hide his blush as he turned around.
“Okay, but we’re following you,” Kagome declared. As her husband resumed chopping the rest of the potatoes, she wrapped her arms around his middle and rested her cheek against his back.
“I’m gonna be done in five seconds, you know.”
“Go slower.”
Inuyasha rolled his eyes, but the quick beat of the chopping slowed to a different, sweeter ballad, and Kagome hummed contentedly along.

don’t be a stranger
Fandom: Inuyasha: A Feudal Fairy Tale
Pairing: Inukag
Rating: T
Inukag Week 2024 - Day 5: Personal Space
Summary: Kouga doesn’t respect Kagome’s personal space, and Inuyasha runs an experiment.
Read on AO3
Read below the cut
Evening came and went in a blur. Kagome’s eyebrow twitched at the sensation of golden eyes on her back as she cooked up some stew for the two of them. The others had gone back to the village, each for their own convenient reasons, but she knew that it was really because they, too, thought it best to leave them some time to resettle. They would be rejoining them after nightfall.
She sat on the opposite side of the fire he’d built to eat her serving of stew in peace, but as soon as he finished his own bowl, Kagome knew she wouldn’t be able to keep him at bay much longer.
Well, time to embrace the inevitable.
Taking her food with her, she pulled herself with a grunt to her feet, circled around the fire, and plopped right next to Inuyasha on his left side. He was leaning his back against the closest tree to the flames. He clearly still felt disgruntled about the day’s events, but he was long past growing angry with her about it, surely. All of his disdain was for the pushy wolf—and she appreciated that, at least. Alongside the disdain, though, there seemed to be something else bothering him.
Kagome leaned forward, bracing her arms over her knees, her own bowl still between her hands. It was warmer in her previous spot; she wasn’t as close to the fire now, and the wind bit through her clothes when it blew. She mused that she’d likely be more comfortable if she changed into her pajamas.
She’d been dreading when he’d finally start this stupid conversation, but the sooner it began, the sooner it’d be done.
The sudden sound of his voice wasn’t unexpected.
“So, you don’t like that kinda thing, huh?” he probed.
Kagome frowned, digging at a piece of cabbage stuck in her tooth with her tongue. “What kind of thing?”
After a beat, he spoke flatly, “Getting felt up.”
She cringed. Inuyasha was an all or nothing sort of man: either he would beat around a bush until he made himself dizzy, or he’d spit out something so blunt it made her dizzy. Right now, she wasn’t sure which she would have preferred more.
Kouga’s arm was crushing over her shoulder, more of a confining weight than a sweet affection. His words were equally heavy on her waning patience.
“Kagome, you don’t have to play shy—I know you’re only saying that ‘cause the mutt’s feelings will get hurt. Don’t worry about him.”
Her eyebrow twitched. “I’m not worrying about anything. I just don’t want your arm on me.”
“What, is it too heavy? I have been putting some muscle on recently—”
“It’s called personal space, Kouga. Can’t you respect mine?”
Kagome filled her mouth with a final spoonful of stew, chewed, and swallowed. Inuyasha was looking down at her expectantly, already having finished his bowl. She clunked hers on the hard ground.
“Didn’t you hear what I said to him?” she said, curling her lip. “Of course not. I like my personal space, thank you very much.” She straightened her spine and planted her hands on the ground behind her.
“Hmm. You sure about that?” he asked in a strangely calm voice. She turned her head to inspect him and found him gazing at her sideways. It wasn’t an accusatory look, but it did contain a clear serving of doubt.
“Bastard!” growled a familiar gruff voice before landing a hard fist to Kouga’s head.
“Ow!” cried her captor, who whipped around and cradled the wound with his free hand.
“Keep your filthy hands to yourself,” Inuyasha spat.
Kagome breathed a sigh of relief. At least this meant Kouga would probably let her go so that he could square up with Inuyasha.
He did just that. Lifting his arm from her shoulder, Kouga turned to face the half-demon, who had landed only a couple feet away. Kagome turned, too. She found Inuyasha not looking at Kouga, but at her. She sent him a look of tired gratitude before the wolf could steal his attention fully.
“Oh, you’re still around? That’s surprising,” drawled Kouga.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It’s just that there was hardly any trace of your scent on Kagome… I figured she finally got tired of you.”
Didn’t he believe her by now? It wasn’t like she hid her discomfort earlier. Even she could still smell the wolf’s unkempt stench on her shirt. How could he even think she was okay with it?
“Is that so hard to believe?” she grit out, clearly offended.
“Honestly?” he grunted. “I know for a fact you were lying about that.”
What the hell? Was he delusional? Was he that jealous? Kagome glared at him in pure horrified agitation—but his own expression, surprisingly, didn’t seem exactly angry.
Kagome grit her teeth. What was she, some kind of fire hydrant?
“What is she, your personal pissing post?” growled Inuyasha. It wasn’t the most gracious of phrases, but she appreciated the sentiment.
She thought now would be a good time to say so herself, too. For the hundredth time.“Kouga. My answer is the same now as it’s always been: I’m. Not. Going. With. You.”
“Come on, Kagome! You know I’d treat you better than this flea brain?”
“Kouga… how Inuyasha treats me has nothing to do with me going with you,” she said. In the corner of her eye, she saw Inuyasha’s expression tighten bitterly, but it was back to normal in a mere flash. She continued, “I just don’t want to. I don’t like men who touch me like that. It’s not complicated. Now please, get out of here before Inuyasha tries to tear your throat out.”
“Heh! As if he could!” scoffed the wolf. But he turned his back to them nonetheless and reared to go. “Catch you later. I won’t give up so easily.”
And then, he was gone.
“What could possibly make you think I was lying!?” she cried.
But when he elaborated further, Kagome realized that they weren’t precisely talking about the same thing: “I just think it’s not true, is all. You liking your personal space. In general.” He shrugged.
Their eyes locked.
“Huh?” she squeaked. “W-What do you mean?”
“Maybe just with him you do,” he went on. Then, to her growing horror, he smirked.
She tore her eyes from him and turned her head to the side to hide her rosy cheeks. She sputtered, “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“I wonder if you’re lying again,” he mumbled, and it almost sounded like a chuckle.
She was going to rebut him, but the sensation of fingers on her left elbow almost made her jolt. Somehow, she managed to keep still. She was staring at the fire now, waiting to see what he was about, and she felt his hand climb slowly up from her elbow to her upper arm.
When he scooted himself an inch closer to her, she finally lifted her head to look at him. His bent arm was pressed along her lower back. He’d halted for a moment—maybe to allow her the chance to respond—but all she could manage was to stare dumbfounded at his nervous but still altogether patient and watchful gaze.
He continued to elevate his arm, the action displacing her hair that was once on her back to drape messily over his bicep.
His face was pretty damn close now. But she couldn’t look away—she was fascinated by his own fascination, his own carefulness, his own daring expression. There was a slight tilt to his brow, as if his increasing confidence brought him to the cusp of amusement.
When the full weight of his arm was over her shoulders and behind her neck, he softly tugged her backwards the few inches it took to recline fully against the tree trunk.
They settled, and he stared down at her—waiting.
During the process, Kagome had been so focused on tracking his movements that once they stopped, her body caught up to her all at once: her heart began to pound in her ears and in her chest, and her face grew rapidly hotter.
His downturned chin was perhaps half a foot from her eyes, which were still gawking up at him. After a full ten seconds of her silence, she watched his lips curl into a smile that could only be described as pride incarnate.
Ah. So that’s what this is about, Kagome noted absently.
And of course he had to go and ruin it by opening his stupid mouth: “I thought you said you didn’t like this sort of thing, Kagome.”
She forced her throat to swallow, and she hardened her face into a weak scowl. She could tell by his continued smirk that her blush kept the expression from looking very intimidating, but there was nothing she could do about that, really.
She was going to say And I still don’t, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t like the feel of being under his arm—but she also didn’t want to just hand him a victory at her own expense. It was Kouga he wished to defeat in this endeavor—not her.
…Right? Right.
“You’re one to talk,” she managed evenly. “Kouga wasn’t wrong earlier when he said you had the affectionate instinct of a puffer fish.”
Yeah, that would work for now. Deflect, deflect, deflect—avoid the truth, but also avoid lying.
“Keh. That isn’t…” he began, surprised at finding himself on his heels in this conversation. She saw his struggle plainly: he wanted to tell her she and Kouga were wrong, but in doing so, he’d have to defend himself as being some kind of touchy-feely person—and even if he was (which she didn’t quite buy wholesale), he’d never admit to it.
She did somewhat pity his dilemma. “Well, I guess it’d be more accurate to say that you’re affectionate when it’s on your own terms.” She looked away as she spoke, and if she allowed a touch of dejection to leak into her tone, well… so much the better.
It worked.
“Hey,” he grunted, angling his head to stay in her periphery. “It’s just ‘cause—well…”
She hid her rolling eyes. He was so bad about leading himself into dead ends. He’d begin to say what he meant, and then once he came close enough to actually feel the sugary words on the tip of his tongue, he discovered he didn’t approve of their taste. He didn’t have much of a sweet tooth, after all.
When she turned her head back to him, he staggered his own back a few inches. She stared at him with a raised brow.
“You mean to tell me that you’re okay with receiving affection, too?”
He froze. “Uh…”
She scoffed and gave him a derisive look. “You’d rather jump off a cliff.”
Her words seemed to agitate him. “You’re wrong,” he said, returning to his closeness from before, expression obstinate.
Was she cruel? Maybe. It was his own fault for turning this into a competition between them instead of just between him and Kouga.
“That so?” she prompted simply.
Kagome brought her left hand up to tangle her fingers with his where they draped over her shoulder. She watched his face contort with first confusion and then embarrassment, which he just as quickly moved to quell.
He was a stubborn one.
The sky was at dusk now, and its gold only highlighted the matching tones of his eyes. She watched as he resettled himself inwardly.
She’d push a little more, then.
In one movement, without disturbing his arm or their joined hands, she twisted her waist and flung her legs over his lap.
He clearly was struggling to suppress the coughs that came after he choked on his own spit, but his eyes grew fixed and firm on her face.
Her torso was adjacent to his now, and she could look straight up at him without having to turn her head.
Still holding it in, she mused. One more try.
Her right hand, which was free on her own lap, came to snake around his back and settle on his waist. She gripped his robe in her fingers. Then, she loosened her left hand from his and brought it to rest on his left leg, right beside where her own thigh was pressed atop his.
His fingers instinctively latched onto her shoulder. His expression was outright pained now, his own face beet red and a bead of sweat trailing down his temple. His eyes weren’t on hers—they were somewhere lower—and their expression was not a sweet one.
She wondered if what he did next was done out of spite or something worse. Proving a point could be a dangerous game—and he was quite competitive. He was growing vexed with her, clearly, but she knew better than to think herself the victor just yet. Especially after he leisurely brought his own right hand to sit on top of her thigh.
Her upper thigh. High enough that his fingertips would brush the fabric of her skirt.
She stopped breathing. Whatever look had been on her face, she hoped it was a pretty one—because it was now frozen there.
He saw her panic, and he smirked with notable strain.
Kagome wondered if she should somehow return them to the point that this was all supposedly about. She said the first thing that came to mind: “…I definitely wouldn’t like it if Kouga did this,” she admitted. She realized when the words were halfway out of her mouth that it probably wasn’t the smartest thing to say.
Inuyasha’s fingers tightened on her leg, the claw of his thumb pressing into the skin of her inner thigh. “As if I’d let him try.”
She gulped. “And what about you, huh? Don’t pretend like this is normal behavior for you. You can’t blame me for thinking that you didn’t like doing stuff like this. Or maybe…” she paused, flicked her eyes away, and mumbled her finish: “…maybe that you just didn’t like doing it with me.”
He brushed his thumb on her sensitive skin, and she returned her meek gaze to his.
His golden eyes softened. “You think I’d have you in my lap if I didn’t want you there?”
Her face heated again. His did, too. When her eyes lowered to his mouth, his head dipped an inch, and she felt his warm breath flutter against her lips. His arm tightened behind her neck, and he tugged her the rest of the way to him.
The first time they’d kissed, he’d been unconscious for most of it. When he’d awakened, he found his claws buried into her stiff shoulders. They felt different this time, his lips, when they met hers. They were firm, but not from a grimace; they were soft, and expressive, and thorough. She’d been afraid of his thickened fangs last time, but now, she almost wished he’d use them a little.
It was only half a minute they got before he smelled Kirara on the wind. When he pulled away, he sighed mournfully and told her this. She stole another kiss, which he gave generously.
They untangled from each other slowly and came to stand.
“Maybe don’t be such a stranger from now on,” she said with a timid smile. “Kouga did say he didn’t smell much of you on me. You want him to leave me alone, don’t you?”
His look grew weak. His fingers twitched at his sides.
He would have responded, but Miroku, Sango, and Shippo were greeting them from above, and Kagome turned her back to him to welcome them back.

Return of the Tragic Priest, Koga
Inuyasha doesn't fully remember how he got to where he was, but it was kind of comfortable. He was soaked in some kind of fragrant liquid, the potion so intoxicating that he couldn't help but sleep. His entire being was heavy and he felt weight pulling off of him in waves.
A great pulse from the jewel shards around his neck passed through him like a shiver and nausea joined his sedation.
He inhaled, trying to get his mind to concentrate past the smell. His thoughts were slipping away steadily, giving space for nothingness to take over...
"No."
The echoing voice wasn't his but was familiar to his ears.
"Don't say it!"
Say what? He thought. It would be so easy to fall asleep now...
Kagome's wings flapped nearby. Hearing it stirred his consciousness further. The wind her landing created whipped directly over his face, making him grimace. If only he could move.
"Kagome..." he struggled to say. Get me out of here!
"Koga?"
Inuyasha felt like someone was pulling his heart right from his chest. Somehow he was unable to yell as his very spirit was ripped out from his being.
He was too tired. None of his bodily functions could be engaged by him, but he maintained his senses.
A great yowl erupted from somewhere around him. He remembered the demon witch Urasue and what she had done. Was she dead?
"Kagome...why are you alive? I sealed you." That same voice he heard in his head. It was raspy and deep. Most of all, it sounded cold.
He heard the responding wing flap. She was irritated. "I escaped, no thanks to you!"
"I hate you."
There was a shuffle of steps and then another cry of pain, this time from the new voice.
"What's happening?" The annoyance was entirely gone from her voice.
"How could you do this to me, Kagome?! I trusted you!"
"You're bleeding," she whispered.
"That's the wound you gave him," he heard Kaede say, "you don't remember?"
"I didn't..." Kagome sounded horrified.
"Truly? It wasn't you?"
"Now you're lying? Stop it!"
It was then that Inuyasha had to sit prone and listen to the tragic death of Koga, the monk who sealed Kagome to the Goshinboku.
"You don't remember asking to become human?"
This was a revelation. Kagome attacked Koga to take the jewel for herself.
But it didn't sound like the Kagome Inuyasha had come to know, the one who had a sad stare whenever Koga's name was brought up.
"That was not what happened. It wasn't me!"
"We were supposed to go together, Kagome..." and then she sounded anguished when a crackle traveled through the air. “I can still fix this.”
"Brother, stop—!" Kaede begged, but it seemed as if it was no use. "We have to get to the bottom of this."
"Kaede? You're protecting her?"
"I..."
Inuyasha intimately knew the sound of a bow being drawn now. It always clattered unceremoniously, its power concealed by the dexterity needed from the user. But once this shot was released; the dangerous explosion that ensued sent shrapnel to his face.
"Oh no!" Shippo yelped and Inuyasha felt his small body crouch over to cover his face.
"You lied about being a human. You must answer for it!"
"I was not...I..."
"I cannot rest until you are dead!"
There was another sharp cry from Kagome that hit Inuyasha so viscerally his eyes snapped open. With a deep breath, he was able to muster the strength to reclaim his soul back from Koga. The feeling resembled being punched in the diaphragm repeatedly.
-
They made it back to the village in one piece, but Kagome never lost her haunted look. Even though Inuyasha was fatigued, he was burning with questions. Was now the right time to ask her?
It suddenly occurred to him what he should start with.
"You okay?"
Kagome huffed and gave him a half-hearted smile, "He...it didn't happen for him the same way it did for me. But...that's how it happened to him. And I can't do anything about it."
"You can still be mad," he offered, "I'm kinda pissed myself."
"Huh?"
"Be mad," Inuyasha repeated, "that fucker sealed you to a tree. And he pretty much stole my soul, mind you!"
"Yeah!" Shippo chimed in, jumping into Kagome's lap. "Be mad like before! We'll never see him again anyway."
"Yeah..." her voice trailed off as she hugged Shippo to her chest, "we won't."
The Boy Who Overcame Time
Inuyasha was digging through his backpack looking for his textbooks, to no avail. “Shit,” he whispered. “Ma’s going to kill me if she has to buy these again.”

Kagome's Got To Go by @ajoy3fanfics (NR)
The way Yuki and Suki saw it, this Kagome woman needed to go.
From the first day she came, they knew she was trouble. They had been playing a perfectly fun game of 'who can annoy uncle the most' (It was always Suki), when he suddenly stood up, passing them off to Shippo with a distant look in his eyes. Uncle was fast, there was no question about that, but unless there was a reason for him to be on high alert, he was downright lethargic. Still, Uncle Inuyasha needing space wasn't anything new, so it wasn't terribly worrisome that he took off at high speed; It did, however, raise a few red flags when Shippo shook them off and headed in the dog demons direction, screaming "it's her! She's back!"

Sugar and Spice - an InuKag coffee shop AU
What's this? An InuKag oneshot that is NOT porn? It's been ages! This fic has been 4+ years in the making (aka, collecting dust until I finally finished it today), and now, at last, I'm sharing it. In honor of 6 years since I shared the coffee shop AU headcanon list, here at last is my first "true" coffee shop AU for this fandom.
This is also officially my 100th Inuyasha ficlet that goes into my oneshot collections! I hope y'all enjoy some silly fluff! ❤
Posted under my "Tied Together" collection: ff.net & AO3

Setting: coffee shop AU
Rated: K+
DISCLAIMER: Yes, I've worked in food service and customer service and am fully aware that all I wrote below is bullshit. Fiction is fiction lol ^^"
~*~*~*~
“Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what little girls are made of.”
That stupid nursery rhyme, thought Kagome furiously as she jabbed at the coffee machine, was the biggest load of bull!
At the moment, this “little girl” was made of molten lava, bubbling under the surface of the falsely tranquil mountain of her Customer Service Persona, and any second now, she was going to blow her top.
All because of him!
The Asshole, with short silver hair, golden eyes, perpetual frown, and absurdly adorable dog ears, came into Kagome’s workplace every Friday morning. For the past four months. And not a single occasion had passed where he remotely acted like a decent person!
He seemed to use Coffee for the Soul (the cafe where Kagome normally adored working) as an outlet for all his personal problems. Yeah, one of those customers.
Kagome actually considered herself somewhat an expert of dealing with those sorts; she had an uncanny talent of letting their snippiness and rude manners roll off her back like water on a duck, and smiling so sweetly and behaving with such politeness that eventually even the angriest customer either slipped away shamefaced or let their anger temporarily melt away.
But not with him. She had no patience with The Asshole. It was simply impossible!
Still, Kagome had a rep at Coffee for the Soul for being “the sweet barista,” so every Friday was a test of her fortitude. At first, she took it head-on, with all the enthusiasm of any wide-eyed bushy-tailed newcomer, despite already being employed there for two years.
But then, he had snatched the cup from the counter, glared at her, and spat out, “You smell funny.” And promptly left the premises!
Fuming, Kagome had spent the rest of her shift off-kilter, with sharp movements and incoherent mutterings under her breath, causing her coworkers’ heads to turn in surprise. From then on, Fridays became a tense battlefield of wits: the Asshole Customer vs the Slowly-Losing-Her-Cool Barista.
“Kagome, I can take over, if you want–” her coworker and friend Sango tried offering once, but Kagome refused point blank.
“This. Is. War!” she had snarled, pushing the buttons and slamming down utensils with such ferocity that no one dared tried to argue.
So, every week Kagome and The Asshole had their “face-off,” with tension one could cut with a knife until he left the premises. The only blessing of that infamous customer’s regularity was that his order was forever the same: black coffee, with a shot of espresso.
After a month of his weekly visits, it was suggested that maybe, perhaps, the baristas could already prepare his drink ahead of time. Best case scenario, he leaves Coffee for the Soul all the earlier (and lessen the damaged mood of a certain stubborn employee). Worst case scenario, he changes his order and they cut their losses.
Kagome shot down the suggestion with a righteous fury.
“He can wait for his stupid order just like everyone else!” she hissed at Sango. “And he can go through my suggestions and sales-pitches, too!”
(Sango chose not to say that Kagome normally avoided the sales pitch with other customers, preferring to take the “personable” approach that generally opened them up to trying new things without her input. It was a brilliant, psychological tactic that worked most of the time, so she really did not, in fact, have to do the Sales Pitch Spiel with The Asshole.)
And thus, Fridays always ended up the same way:
The Asshole enters the cafe.
Kagome greets him with a beaming smile that fools absolutely no one.
The Asshole begins to tell his usual order.
Kagome cuts him off with a long, cheerful spiel on all the various types of drinks, additives, and specials.
The Asshole scowls. Mutters something along the lines of “you talk too much.”
Kagome beams with the radiance of a thousand suns.
The Asshole mutters, “Just black coffee, with a shot of espresso.”
Kagome: “Would you also like that with a shot of caramel, vanilla, hazelnut, nutella, chocolate, mint, or strawberry?”
The Asshole: “Plain. Nothing else.”
Kagome, her smile almost unnaturally wide: “Very good, sir. And would you like whipped cream, soy or whole milk?”
The Asshole, growling slightly: “No. Just black. And espresso. Like I said a million times already.”
Kagome, positively overflowing with the Joy of Providing Good Customer Service: “Excellent choice, sir.” Gives the same exact total amount that The Asshole pays every week. Meticulously counts back his change, all the while smiling uncannily.
The Asshole pockets his change. Sits down. Glares at Kagome’s back (according to witnesses) as she cheerfully, painstakingly, slowly prepares his coffee before personally coming around the bar and placing it on his table with a chirpy, “Here’s one black coffee, with espresso, and no additional flavors, cream, or any interesting whatsoever! Enjoy your drink, sir!”
The Asshole furrows his brow, downs his coffee in one gulp while glaring into Kagome’s equally fiery eyes behind her fake smile, tosses the cup, and stomps outside without a word of gratitude, the door bell jingling in his wake.
This exchange became famous. There were variations, of course, oftentimes on The Asshole’s end, where he’d cut Kagome off faster than usual and bark at her to “stop stalling and give me my fucking coffee already.” At which point, a venomously smiling Kagome would politely tell the customer that rude language was not appropriate at this establishment and if he did not comply, she would suggest he find business elsewhere.
(He never did. Kagome seethed about it constantly.)
At first, Kagome’s coworkers were scared she would get a “talk” from her higher-ups, but to everyone’s astonishment, no reprimand or discipline was issued. The supposed reason? “As inappropriate as we would generally find that behavior, the customer has never filed a complaint and continues to give us business. So, we’ll let it slide this time, but expect exemplary service with the rest of our patrons.”
(That was the spoken reason, but Sango, Miroku, and Shippo, all eyeing their normally bubbly and genuine coworker turn into a terrifying fake, condescending queen when face-to-face with the source of her wrath, suspected that the managers found it, well, entertaining.)
Miroku was the first one to make that observation after two months of “the war.” He noted that even the other customers were positively gleeful, watching Kagome and The Asshole rather like watching boxers in a ring. Newcomers would be quickly and quietly filled in on the scoop and they’d find themselves invested in the tense face-off as well.
“I would not be surprised if our bosses have a betting ring going around or something,” Miroku confided in Sango and Shippo while Kagome was on break.
“That’s so unprofessional!” Sango gasped.
“Can you imagine how bored you’d have to be with your life,” Shippo piped up thoughtfully, “to be that invested in the love lives of total strangers? Talk about pathetic.”
(Sango and Miroku were not fooled. Shippo eagerly watched “the show” every week just like everyone else.)
Because regardless of the rage behind Kagome’s eyes, despite the rants and ravings she subjected her coworkers to about how abominable The Asshole was, there was no denying how she was obviously, hopelessly attracted to him.
No one told Kagome this, of course. No one dared incur her wrath any further than necessary. But her cheeks always reddened when the telltale bell rang at 9 am and he entered the cafe. She always smirked when making his drink, and always watched him leave afterwards.
The love-hate-tension between Barista and Customer was the greatest source of entertainment anyone could ask for.
Until one day, when a change of the routine nearly threw everything into unmitigated chaos.
The Asshole came inside, looking uncharacteristically nervous and twitchy. Kagome primed herself for another battle, barely registering the way his usual scowl was missing and in its place was a rather pleading, puppy-eyed look.
“One black coffee and one pumpkin spice latte, please,” he said in one go before Kagome opened her mouth.
The morning buzz around them fell deafeningly silent. Sango froze in place of handing a customer their drink, Miroku’s hand nearly burned on the oven, and Shippo all but literally choked on his drink of water. Every single person, customer and barista, were staring at the nameless customer and a rigid Kagome.
Kagome opened her mouth a few times like a dying fish, shook herself, and croaked out, “Repeat that one more time, please?” There was no sign of her over-the-top Customer Service persona.
“One black coffee and one pumpkin spice latte, please and thank you,” The Asshole repeated, blushing furiously, but his tone was sincere.
Kagome blinked. There was a ringing in her ears. He never said “please” or “thank you.” And he certainly never ordered a second drink, let alone pumpkin spice!
Come to think of it, he was also dressed nicely. Instead of his usual red leather jacket and dirty jeans, he cleaned up rather well, with a button-up shirt and slacks, and dress shoes. Dress shoes?! Kagome’s head swam. Was he on a date? Oh gods, he was definitely on a date!
The silence in the cafe renewed its buzz, but this time with an uptick in excitement. Everyone was wondering the same as her, gossiping delightedly over who his date was going to be, and how their beloved barista was going to “take the heartbreak.”
Well, they had no reason to fret or fuss. Because Kagome had nothing whatsoever to care about! The Asshole may be a thorn in her side, but plenty of women had bad taste and went for those types. So what if he had a date? So what if he cleaned up way too nicely and looked devastatingly handsome, but also adorable in how nervous and shy he clearly was? So what?!
“Your, uh, your usual is different today, hehe,” Kagome awkwardly laughed, hating herself for losing the battle. “You on a — a date or something? Haha, just kidding, I—”
“Yeah, um,” the Asshole ran his hand through his hair, grinning bashfully, “I’m hoping she’ll…. like the gesture.”
And then, the volcano finally erupted.
Without a shred of fake niceness in her voice, Kagome coldly gave the total amount to her regular customer and all but threw the change into his hand without counting. She stomped over to the latte machine and started to prepping the order, her vision going red.
Who was she?! Who was the one who took her asshole away?!
Wait…. What?
“Kagome…” a concerned voice broke into her reverie. “Your hand’s shaking.”
Sango gently but firmly removed the partially-made drink from Kagome and quietly suggested that she sit in the back to “take a moment.”
Angry tears pricking her eyes, Kagome furiously splashed cold water on her face from the sanctity of the bathroom, before gazing at her reflection. What was the deal? Why did this bother her so much? She hated The Asshole! She dubbed him “The Asshole” for good reason! He insulted her! He was always such a jerk!
But then again, how much of that was just a bad first impression?, whispered a treacherous voice in her mind. Has he ever actually been a jerk since that first day?
And loath she was to admit it, Kagome could not think of a singular incident. Grumpy, to be sure, blunt and ungracious, certainly, but not really an outward “asshole.” If anything, her petty behavior over the past few months outweighed his terrible first impression.
Shame washed over Kagome. Shame, jealousy, and sadness. Such a waste…. All this time, she could have employed her actual customer service skills and had gotten to know him. Instead, she lost her chance and now he was chatting away with some pretty young thing and would probably never order his usual black coffee with espresso ever again—
“Hey, Kagome?” Sango’s tentative voice called out, knocking on the door. “You mind coming out?”
“Just a second,” Kagome called out, rubbing her face clean. She stepped out into the kitchen, and was promptly seized by a pair of hands.
Before she could ask what was needed, Sango had already untied Kagome’s apron. “Sango, wha–?”
“No time! Here, take my hairbrush and tease your hair a bit — oh never mind, I’ll do it!”
“Sango! Pft!” Kagome blew her hair out of her face, fumbling as Sango frantically worked around her. “What are you—ouch! That’s my hair tie! What’s going—”
“It’s a shame you’re not wearing something cuter, but it can’t be helped. After all, if he was won over by that gross cold attitude you’ve been dishing out, I’m pretty sure he’d want you even in a potato sack…”
“Who would want me? Sango, what are you talking about?!”
Sango paused in her hairbrushing, and stared, stunned, at the bewildered Kagome. “You really don’t know? Oh, this is even better—!”
“Better? Know what???”
“Just head out and see!”
“See? What are you—- ah!”
And with that, Kagome was tossed unceremoniously from the back, and out onto the “floor,” or customer area of the cafe. Spluttering, she flipped her hair out of her face and looked around. The Asshole was standing nervously at his usual table, clutching his two drinks. Upon noticing her arrival, he walked over, looking for all the world like a lovestruck schoolboy about to ask out his crush.
Kagome blinked, realizing he was not looking over her shoulder, but rather squarely at her, into her eyes. Heat rose on her face. “Wh-what…. Do you have something to say?” Or are you just going to be rude again and break my heart? The voice said, unbidden, in her mind.
The Asshole reached out and offered one of his drinks. It was a pumpkin spice latte.
“Let’s start over. My name is Inuyasha, I’ve liked you for months, and thought we’d have a chat over some coffee.” His face was burning red, and his ears lowered low on his head, but his eyes remained resolutely fixed on hers.
Sharp inhales scattered around them. The entire cafe seemed to have collectively held their breath.
Kagome stared blankly. Then blinked. “Come again?”
Inuyasha took a shaky breath and began: “My name is Inuyasha—”
“No, no, I heard you. I just…. I don’t believe it.”
“Why doncha sit down and then maybe you'll listen to me instead of just assuming?”
There it was. That was her beloved Asshole. Suddenly, Kagome grinned happily and took the proffered drink.
“A pleasure to meet you, Inuyasha. My name is Kagome, and, um,” she blushed so hard she was fairly certain steam was coming off the top of her head, “I’ve… liked you for months, too.”
“I FUCKING KNEW IT! Cough up, Shippo! You owe me $20!”
Inuyasha and Kagome both jumped a foot in the air and spun around. Half of the cafe was applauding, the other half harassing each other for exchanges of —-
“You placed bets on us?!” Kagome lamented to an excitable Sango who was counting her winnings to Miroku, while Shippo sulked.
“Well, I thought it was awful at first,” Sango said nonchalantly, “but I confess, I couldn’t resist after today!”
Kagome turned and looked Inuyasha in the eye. They both started laughing and sat down, trying to ignore the chaos around them.
“Oh by the way,” Kagome said, taking a sip of her latte, “how did you know to order pumpkin spice?”
“I can smell it on you. The day we met, you….. smelled so much like pumpkin and vanilla, it was overwhelming. I, er, thought you smelled rather nice.”
“That’s not remotely what that sounded like,” Kagome said, raising an eyebrow.
Inuyasha grinned, looking slightly abashed. “I have a bad habit of putting my foot in my mouth. And I can be awfully stubborn. Betcha you know what that’s like.”
Kagome’s face burned even hotter and she sipped her drink. “Well, girls are made of sugar and spice, you know,” she said cheekily.

QUIET LOVE, OH HOW IT SCREAMS
synopsis: "i'd never let anything happen to you, if i could help it."
a/n: GOD, i love doctor!au inukag. i did a lot of editing and revising for this, so it's a different beast from what it was when smutmas version came out. i'm not 100% happy with the ending, but i mean. if i did any more i had a feeling i would just ruin it instead of help it.
— 💓 —
“You’re going to love me,” Sango sing-songed, sliding into the seat next to Kagome’s.
Kagome grunted, massaging her temple. The bar wasn't too crowded, thankfully, but the noise level was high enough that she had to speak up to be heard. “Why? Did you kill the hospital director yet?”
“No,” Sango said primly; Onigumo Industries owned the hospital Kagome was a surgeon at, and Sango's father was vice president of one of the subsidiaries. “But,” she said, grasping her friend’s arm, “I kind of have a solution to your extended shift problem.”
“You mean the hospital is hiring another surgeon?” Kagome mumbled grumpily, knocking back her watered down whisky. The moisture that collected outside the glass splattered unto the bar when she slammed it down.
“No! A guy!”
Kagome stared at her best friend, first blankly, then sourly. “Sango, I love you and I know you only have my best interests at heart, but seriously? I barely have time to bathe Buyo. I don’t have time for a guy.”
“No, I mean like to fuck!” her friend said encouragingly. “It’s been rough the past few weeks. Maybe a good orgasm will fix you right up!"
Kagome's cheeks colored. "I don't—"
Sango wasn't having any of it. "Aw, come on! It's just some harmless fun. He’s right over there, by the booth—”
“Now?” Kagome said incredulously. “I’m in my scrubs. I have a stain on my shirt!”
“So? Is it a shit stain?”
“I’m not even going to correct you on how many hospital protocols I would’ve broken if it were a shit stain.”
“Lighten up, Kagome!” Sango insisted, jumping up from her chair and tugging at her friend's arm. “It’s Friday and you deserve to get laid. Come on.”
“It is a testament to our ten-year friendship that I am choosing to trust you,” Kagome said flatly, throwing a few bills on the counter to cover her drink. She called over the bartender before letting Sango pull her away.
“Hello, gentlemen,” Sango said brightly, then brandished her friend from behind her. “As promised, my lady doctor friend.”
“Hi,” the guy at the edge of the booth said, dark hair and bright, blue eyes. He was cute, Kagome could admit, if a little too... pedestrian, for her tastes. He extended a hand to shake. “I’m Kōga.”
“Kagome,” she introduced herself, taking his hand for a brief shake. He scooted over and motioned for her to sit next to him.
Sango had already settled into the side of a guy who had a short ponytail and earrings. “I’m Miroku,” that guy said.
She only just managed to land her butt on the leather seat of the booth, she felt a familiar vibration pattern in her pocket. Her emergency pattern.
Before Kōga—or Sango, for that matter—could utter a word, she’d straightened and fished out her phone. “Hospital. Gotta go.”
Without so much as a look back, she bolted.
“I’m here,” Kagome panted, running into the ER. "I'm here!"
“Doc!” Jinenji, one of the nurses on shift, called out, timidly holding a clipboard to his chest as he approached from the nurses' station. “I know you just got out—”
“It’s fine.” She waved away his concern. “What do you need?”
“We did a test for Nazuna, the one who had the appendectomy earlier today, and the results required a change in dosage,” he informed her, then turned sheepish when he continued, “I’m really sorry; her mother was getting… irate, and I couldn't get another physician—”
Kagome shook her head and let out a breath. “It’s okay, Jinenji; it's not your fault. Good thing I was nearby.” A bar two blocks away wasn't necessarily nearby, but Jinenji didn’t have to know that. She took the clipboard. "Nazuna... the one with anemia, right? Can we check if she needs a transfusion? Her RBC's looking pretty low..."
“Dr. Higurashi!” another nurse cried as soon as Jinenji took off with her advice. “Thank God you're here; I need you!”
Kagome sighed and got to work.
A few hours later, she yawned as she pushed back against the desk in the middle of the doctor's lounge, her chair screeching against the floor. "Oh my God," she groaned, exhausted.
“I hear Higurashi,” a gruff voice called a few hours later, and a light-haired head popped into the admin room doorway. Gold eyes peered at her with interest. “Hey. Isn’t your shift over? Why are you still here?”
Kagome stretched in her chair and rubbed her eye with the back of her hand. She smiled tiredly at Inuyasha, who regarded her with curious eyes. “Had to do something. You haven’t left yet?”
He strode into the room, hands in his pockets. He’d forgone his lab coat and scrubs, changing into jeans and a button-up shirt. “About to, yeah. Where'd you come from? Your house?”
She shook her head. “No, I was at the bar two blocks down. You know Shikon?”
Inuyasha smirked and jerked his head. “Come on. I’ll drive you back. Unless you wanna walk…?”
“Nah, you’re good,” she said, collecting her things and leaving the room. She fell into step next to him. “And excuse you, I had one drink.”
He opened the door to the stairwell and let her pass; the elevator to the parking was under repair. “Shikon’s for kids anyway. Why not head to, I don’t know, Totosai’s, or something?”
“I didn’t pick the place,” Kagome mumbled. Her phone vibrated in her pocket and she fumbled for it, shoes echoing as they made their way down the cement steps.
“Oh? Were you out with friends, then?”
"Yeah." Kagome groaned, pausing in the middle of the stairwell, "And she’s fucking pissed at me.”
Inuyasha raised an eyebrow, curious. He hopped back up a few steps to get back to her level and peered at her phone, eyes widening at the slew of texts she'd apparently ignored.
Sango 23:44 Is everything ok?
Sango 00:22 Kagome we’re still at the bar in case u wanna come back, I’m telling Koga ur coming back
Sango 00:28 Can u reply so i can give an update
Sango 01:18 Kagome PLS!! Trying to call u, pls answer
Sango 01:31 Koga left. He’s kinda pissed and I’m super embarrassed
Sango 01:56 Leaving too, it’s been 2 hours
Sango 02:03 Call me in the morning when I’m more important than your job
He whistled lowly. “She’s really mad, huh?”
“No, really? What gave that away?” Kagome said blankly, furiously typing back. Sorry, stuff at the hospital got hectic. Will make it up to you tomorrow. She sent the message and pocketed her phone, pressing a hand to her forehead. She took a deep breath before turning to climb back up the stairs.
“What’s up?”
“You go on ahead,” she said.
“What?" She could hear Inuyasha climb up after her. "Why?”
“I’m heading home,” she said, looking back at him. She lived on the other side of town, opposite the direction of Shikon.
Inuyasha put his hands in his pockets and looked at her like she was crazy. “Are you crazy? It’s two in the morning, Higurashi. I’ll drive you home."
She gaped. “Are you crazy? I live an hour away!”
“Traffic won’t be too bad,” he said with a shrug, not looking at her. “I don’t mind. Seriously.”
“But—”
He sighed and climbed further up the stairs until they were a step apart, his eyes meeting hers with barely a tilt of his head. “Kagome, seriously. You work too hard and give too much."
She rolled her eyes, "I'm fine—"
"Oh, come on," Inuyasha said, clearly exasperated. "Don’t think I hadn’t heard of you being wheeled out of the operating room after that cystectomy last week.”
She flushed at that. “I—How’d you know about that?”
“Jinenji’s very easy to manipulate.”
She gaped and lightly smacked his arm. “That’s mean! You know he’s scared of you.”
“He’s scared of a lot of things,” Inuyasha shot back. “And I would’ve known anyway.”
“How?”
“Kagome,” he said, one of his hands slipping out of his pocket to gently grasp her wrist. He raised it so it hovered in between their faces. “You’re shaking.”
Her hand twitched before her eyes, and she bit her lip. “I'm fine, I'm just tired—"
"Tired? But you're consistently taking 24-hour shifts?" He lowered her hand, but didn't let go of her wrist. "Come on, Kagome. Admit it; you're overworking yourself."
She sniffed. "I didn’t know you watched me so closely.” It was meant to corner him, but it came out feeble and shy.
He sighed and lowered their clasped hands. “Seriously, Kagome,” he mumbled as he, to her surprise, rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand. “You need to take care of yourself more.”
She looked down at his hand, watching as his thumb dragged tenderly over her skin.
Her relationship with Inuyasha was both surprisingly simple and terrifyingly complicated. They had met in medical school, when she was a sophomore and he was in his last year. They'd gone to different schools—rival schools—but they had a mutual friend who introduced them, thinking they’d be perfect for each other.
It couldn’t have gone more wrong.
She looked too much like his ex, he said, while she claimed that he was too big of an asshole. While they were both planning to eventually become surgeons, it seemed like the similarities stopped there. Whenever they managed to come across each other it was like they wanted to bite each other’s head off for the smallest of things—like breathing too loud, or walking too slow—until they discovered that they’d work together in the same hospital, in the same operating team.
They'd learned to deal with each other. At least until the day Kagome’s brother had been wheeled in into the ER.
Sōta had been shot.
Kagome had nearly lost her mind with worry, snapping at anyone who denied her access to her brother, until Inuyasha had to practically manhandle her to sit down on the couch in the physician’s lounge. He had talked her down, told her that he was handling the operation, he'd be the one to take care of her brother, but she needed to calm the fuck down, okay?
She'd grabbed his hand and made him promise to do everything—everything—he could.
He'd kissed her forehead, unbidden, and left the room. The shock of it was like the icing on the proverbial cake, rendering her speechless. It was too much all at once, and she ended up sleeping on the lounge couch. A few hours later, Inuyasha woke Kagome up and she bolted to see her brother.
Sōta had made it, albeit looking a little worse for wear. Her mother had screamed at the police on the phone, the angriest Kagome had ever seen her. Turned out Sōta had been shot by an unknown assailant after being mugged, and the man was still on the loose.
The police had found him eventually, Kagome had told Inuyasha when he asked, and she hadn't known anything beyond that. The other surgeon nodded, looking pensive. Kagome had realized she hadn’t thanked him yet, for all he’d done. She had suggested that she pick up his shifts in return.
He'd declined (surprisingly politely). Instead, he'd offered to pick up her shifts while she took a break. When she'd asked what for, all he said was, "To take care of your brother," and left it at that.
She'd thought he'd take one or two shifts, but he'd crossed her name out of the shift sheet for a total of three weeks, declaring that hanyōs didn't really need sleep, and therefore could take on more work. ("I'm the ideal ER doctor, if you think about it," he'd said.)
"Inuyasha," she said.
His thumb resumed its motions. "Hm?"
"Why are you being so nice to me?" she asked him.
That seemed to snap him out of whatever stupor he'd landed himself in, and he let go. She kind of missed it.
With a blush on his face, he scoffed and looked away. "I—You know, I pick up your shifts when you're out, you know? I—You shouldn't take—If you get sick, I'll have to take more shifts."
Awkward silence settled over them, and Kagome stepped down to stand closer to him. They were practically nose to nose, and Inuyasha's gold gaze met hers with an intensity that made her want to shiver.
"You're lying," she challenged boldly, and that made him scoff again, sounding completely offended this time around.
"Why would I lie?" he said with a roll of his eyes, turning away and stepping down.
Kagome was growing frustrated. She couldn't put into words what she wanted to tell him.
"You're always—" She shook her head. She was ready to yell, but she wasn't angry. Once upon a time, she would have snapped, called him a coward, and stomped past him. But gone was the pure loathing that defined the early stages of their relationship. So where did that leave them?
Where did that leave her?
He turned and looked back up at her. "Look. I can drive you home, and I—" He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. "Just get some rest, okay? You've had a long day. I can take your shift tomorrow, just... just get some rest."
The next thing she knew, she was watching his back as he climbed down the stairs, and that's when it dawned on her.
Her brother, her job, her wellbeing—why hadn't she realized sooner that—
"Inuyasha."
He paused and sighed, turning back to face her. "Kagome, just—"
Maybe it was the exhaustion, but the way he looked at her made her eyes prick with heat. She bounded towards him and wrapped her arms around his neck, burying her face in his shirt collar. "Thank you."
He was clearly taken aback, but managed to keep both of them upright. "Wh—For what—"
"For taking care of me," she mumbled. "That's what you're doing, right?"
She felt his body go rigid before relaxing. His arms slowly came around her middle. "Stupid girl," he murmured with so much affection it made her heart skip, "Only because you're doing a terrible job at it."
She sobbed. "I'm sorry for worrying you."
"It's okay."
"And I'm sorry for not noticing sooner," she sniffled. "I'm sorry for being a workaholic, and for being exhausted, and for crying."
His arms tightened just a bit. "It's okay."
"I'm sorry for being annoying about it."
His low laughter rumbled in his chest. "It's okay."
She hugged him tighter. "And I'm sorry I never thanked you for Sōta."
He lets out a breath and turn his head. "You don't have to apologize or thank me for that, Kagome," he told her gently. Pressing a soft kiss to the shell of her ear, he continued, "Your family is important to you. I'd never let anything happen to them." Then, softer yet louder at the same time, "I'd never let anything happen to you, if I could help it."
That made her gut wrench and heart swell and it made her cry harder.
He held her close as she did.
