She had read enough stories to know that the princess and the monster were never the same. She had been alone long enough to know which one she was.

Queer Fantasy Books Bracket: Round 1

Book summaries below:
Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardoust
There was and there was not, as all stories begin, a princess cursed to be poisonous to the touch. But for Soraya, who has lived her life hidden away, apart from her family, safe only in her gardens, it’s not just a story. As the day of her twin brother’s wedding approaches, Soraya must decide if she’s willing to step outside of the shadows for the first time. Below in the dungeon is a demon who holds knowledge that she craves, the answer to her freedom. And above is a young man who isn’t afraid of her, whose eyes linger not with fear, but with an understanding of who she is beneath the poison. Soraya thought she knew her place in the world, but when her choices lead to consequences she never imagined, she begins to question who she is and who she is becoming…human or demon. Princess or monster. Fantasy, young adult, retelling, romance
The Rise of Kyoshi by F. C. Yee
F. C. Yee’s The Rise of Kyoshi delves into the story of Kyoshi, the Earth Kingdom–born Avatar. The longest-living Avatar in this beloved world’s history, Kyoshi established the brave and respected Kyoshi Warriors, but also founded the secretive Dai Li, which led to the corruption, decline, and fall of her own nation. The first of two novels based on Kyoshi, The Rise of Kyoshi maps her journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice who is still feared and admired centuries after she became the Avatar. Fantasy, young adult, adventure, epic fantasy

I just finished A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman and oh gosh that was beautiful in a way I did not expect.
Everyone hates grumpy old man but this one was incredible. I think it gave me a lot of food for thought in how I looked at the world around me. My perception of people has changed.
I read this book right after my grandma died. Who was also your classic extremely grumpy and rude and ungrateful old person and what not. But Ove was so much more and so was my grandma and it helped. It really did.
I found Frederik's Instagram account first and enjoyed reading his captions when I found out he was an author! (Not the usual way to do things)
And then I found A Man Called Ove at a sale and I am in love and in pieces and I bawled my eyes out.
There was something healing in that book about a grumpy old man. The way he described his love for Sonja is incredible. Parvaneh/Patrick/Mirsad/Adrian showing up at exact times to ask for help?? I was at the edge of my seat each time.
His camaraderie with Parvaneh just bc she also disapproves of the actions of Patrick??? Oh I loved the full circle moment of the first chapter of him trying to buy a 'computer' and finding out who it was for.
Of course that burglary scene had me sobbing and then laughing with the 'his heart is too big' statement.
Spoilers ahead::

I think it was a lovely way to end the book with the Saab owner. The funeral with 300 people that Ove helped when he wanted a no fuss funeral. Oh how he would have hated that. But the grumpy young Saab owner who would agree to the house because of his wife?? Just like Ove and Sonja were and I was in tears. It was lovely.
Ove changed more people's lives than he thought. He helped more than he thought. It was about the 'principle' as he said.
But somehow he's right. They don't make men like that as much anymore. Cherish the ones you have ❣️

"Seven Days"
Rooted in themes of motherhood, sacrifice, and the fight for human rights, this is a complex, gripping, and emotionally charged drama.
“Seven Days” is a gripping and emotionally charged drama that is guaranteed to resonate differently with viewers who have children versus those who do not, and it’s a film where your personal perspective and experiences with parenthood will influence how you view the story and characters. Director Ali Samadi Ahadi thrusts you right into the story of an imprisoned activist who must choose between…
