Animated Film ‘#Moonbound’ Sells to Multiple Territories

Solveig Langeland’s Stuttgart-based sales agency Sola Media has sold CGI animated feature film “Moonbound” to multiple territories.

The film, directed by Ali Samadi Ahadi on a production budget of around $9 million, will be released in Germany and Austria by Little Dreams and Warner Bros. on 600 screens next year.

Among the buyers so far are France (KMBO), Spain (Flins & Piniculas), Portugal…

Sundance Gets a Taste of Iranian Politics

PARK CITY, Utah— After the Sundance premiere Friday of “The Green Wave,” a brutal depiction of repression and government-sanctioned violence in Iran, the Iranian filmmaker behind the documentary, Ali Samadi Ahadi, struck a surprisingly hopeful chord. Not about human-rights violations in his homeland — the soft-spoken Mr. Ahadi, who lives in Germany, thinks those will continue. But he was upbeat about whether Iran was listening to the outrage that followed its jailing last month of the celebrated director Jafar Panahi.

“I am certain Iran’s leaders are very aware of the price they are paying for this,” Mr. Ahadi said. “I’m hopeful that the protests — as long as they keep getting louder — will have an impact. Artists like Jafar are the mirror of society, and that mirror is right now broken into pieces.”

Mr. Panahi, known for films like “The Circle,” which criticized Iran’s treatment of women, and another pro-democracy Iranian filmmaker, Mohammad Rasoulof, were given six-year prison terms last month after being convicted on charges of working against the country’s ruling system. A roster of Hollywood heavyweights — Martin Scorsese, Paul Haggis, Sean Penn, Harvey Weinstein, Steven Spielberg, Robert Redford, Francis Ford Coppola — has demanded his release, with European filmmakers and festivals (Cannes, Berlin) joining them. On Wednesday, a London organization called Cine Foundational International introduced a smartphone app called White Meadows where people can record short video statements about the jailed filmmakers. “The White Meadows” is a film made by Mr. Rasoulof about a man who collects human tears.

“The Green Wave,” named after the political groundswell that emerged around Iran’s contested 2009 presidential election, is not the only film at the Sundance Film Festival to shine a light on contemporary life inside the country. While significantly softer in tone, Maryam Keshavarz’s “Circumstance,” a feature about the sexuality of Muslim teenagers, has its premiere on Saturday. (Ms. Keshavarz, who holds dual Iranian and American citizenship and lives in New York, shot her movie predominantly in Lebanon.)

“It’s been so horrifying,” said Ms. Keshavarz about the imprisonment of Mr. Jafar and Mr. Rasoulof. “Jafar is particularly loved both internationally and domestically and that makes him such an enormous symbol. If someone like him can be silenced what does that mean for everybody else?”
