I have too many feelings about dragons to keep them to the tags, sorry.

First place must go to Smaug from the Hobbit by JRR Tolkien. I read the books when I was very young and it left a lasting mark.

Second place to Tintaglia from Realm of the Elderlings by Robin Hobb. Utter brat. Keen intellect honed by generational inherited memory, used entirely to get free dinners or to trick the hairless apes into doing errands for her. Absolute queen shit.

Third place to Korabas, the Eye of Abnegation from Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erickson. Tremendous spoilers for the series if I go into details but she shows up as a viewpoint character for one (1) chapter in the last novel and has lived in my brain rent-free ever since.

Runners-up begin with Telorast and Curdle, likewise from Malazan Book of the Fallen. Including them on this list is a late series spoiler but I can't omit them. The dynamics of petty ghost bickering are a lot of fun to read.

Ruth, from the Pern novels by Anne McCaffery. The problem with Pern dragons is a lot of their personality comes from reflecting their rider, but Ruth is one of the few in the series that manages to be distinct and memorable on his own merits. He is the best boy.

Windrider from the Floramonde books by Pamela Freeman. Absolutely no idea how well this story has aged as you can't get copies for love or money these days, but formative to my child self. Shows up, steals the monarch's soul for a lark, and leaves. Praxis.

Wirenth from the Pern novels by Anne McCaffrey, though this is less about the dragon and more about the story arc around her, Brekke, Kylara and Prideth. 'Dont leave me alone!' :(

Smrgol from the Dragon and the George by Gordon R. Dickson. Probably the first dragon I ever read in fiction who wasn't a monster, also just generally lovely and caring and engaging to read. Honourable mention to Secoh the meredragon who I found annoying as a kid but was a standout character on a recent re-read.
