“ Dovevo ben insegnare come il cittadino reagisce all’ingiustizia. Come ha libertà di parola e di stampa. Come il cristiano reagisce anche al sacerdote e perfino al vescovo che erra. Come ognuno deve sentirsi responsabile di tutto. Su una parete della nostra scuola c’è scritto grande «I care». È il motto intraducibile dei giovani americani migliori. «Me ne importa, mi sta a cuore». È il contrario esatto del motto fascista «Me ne frego». Quando quel comunicato* era arrivato a noi era già vecchio di una settimana. Si seppe che né le autorità civili, né quelle religiose avevano reagito. Allora abbiamo reagito noi. Una scuola austera come la nostra, che non conosce ricreazione né vacanze, ha tanto tempo a disposizione per pensare e studiare. Ha perciò il diritto e il dovere di dire le cose che altri non dice. È l’unica ricreazione che concedo ai miei ragazzi. Abbiamo dunque preso i nostri libri di storia (umili testi di scuola media, non monografie da specialisti) e siamo riandati cento anni di storia italiana in cerca d’una «guerra giusta». D’una guerra cioè che fosse in regola con l’articolo 11 della Costituzione. Non è colpa nostra se non l’abbiamo trovata. Da quel giorno a oggi abbiamo avuto molti dispiaceri. Ci sono arrivate decine di lettere anonime di ingiurie e di minacce firmate solo con la svastica o col fascio. Siamo stati feriti da alcuni giornalisti con «interviste» piene di falsità. Da altri con incredibili illazioni tratte da quelle «interviste» senza curarsi di controllarne la serietà. Siamo stati poco compresi dal nostro stesso Arcivescovo (Lettera al Clero 14.4.1965). La nostra lettera è stata incriminata. Ci è stato però di conforto tenere sempre dinanzi agli occhi quei 31 ragazzi italiani che sono attualmente in carcere per un ideale. Cosi diversi dai milioni di giovani che affollano gli stadi, i bar, le piste da ballo, che vivono per comprarsi la macchina, che seguono le mode, che leggono giornali sportivi, che si disinteressano di politica e di religione. Un mio figliolo ha per professore di religione all’Istituto Tecnico il capo di quei militari cappellani che han scritto il comunicato. Mi dice di lui che in classe parla spesso di sport. Che racconta di essere appassionato di caccia e di judo. Che ha l’automobile. Non toccava a lui chiamare «vili e estranei al comandamento cristiano dell’amore» quei 31 giovani. I miei figlioli voglio che somiglino più a loro che a lui. “

* L'11 febbraio 1965 un gruppo di cappellani militari in congedo della Toscana, riunitisi in assemblea a Firenze nell’anniversario della conciliazione tra Stato e Chiesa, votarono un ordine del giorno in cui dichiaravano, fra l’altro, di considerare «un insulto alla Patria e ai suoi Caduti la cosiddetta “obiezione di coscienza”, che, estranea al comandamento cristiano dell’amore, è espressione di viltà». L’ordine del giorno, pubblicato dal quotidiano «La Nazione» di Firenze, fu fatto conoscere a don Lorenzo da alcuni giovani di San Donato e da un amico professore di Prato saliti a Barbiana la domenica successiva. Il Priore stava facendo scuola. Lesse il ritaglio del giornale insieme ai ragazzi. Se ne discusse un’intera serata, e maturò così la «Lettera ai cappellani militari toscani che hanno sottoscritto il comunicato dell'11 febbraio 1965». La Lettera, firmata da don Lorenzo, venne diffusa a stampa in forma di volantino e fu riprodotta parzialmente da vari giornali e per intero dal settimanale del P.C.I. «Rinascita» [ Nota del curatore ].
