Some other OC fellas! Rory n Henry, plus Rojo (and his animal form) and Waya! (and HER animal form)
The story they’re in is called Overwinter, more of a kids movie/book type premise… What would you do if you woke up at summer camp and found a BLIZZARD outside?

Oh hi, I'm here to submit a hug prompt 🙂
Firstprince, #19 please
(also for @thesleepyskipper. Pls have a little grad students? postdocs? idk some vague academia AU. hug ficlet prompts; read all the hug ficlets)
19. The “good fucking God, I’m so excited to see you” hug.
Seven months. That’s how long it’s been.
Henry hadn’t believed him when Alex announced that he was taking a research position overwintering at McMurdo Station. In bloody Antarctica. Alex, who complains every time it gets below 5°C in New York. Alex, who hates being cooped up. Alex, who adores the sun. Yes, it was a highly selective position, and one that would certainly solidify Alex’s place in the field, but it had been hard not to feel like Alex was doing it to get away from him. Especially after—
Well.
After that rooftop party when they’d gotten drunk and Henry had kissed him, then run away when he realized what he’d done. They’d both pretended not to remember the next day, but Henry was certain Alex had just been trying to spare his feelings. The Antarctica announcement had come shortly after that, the timing too suspicious to be coincidental. But Alex had also made Henry promise to video call with him regularly—“to keep him from losing his mind,” in his words—and surprisingly enough, they had done just that. Alex’s time and access to the internet were limited, so whenever he called, Henry dropped whatever he was doing to talk for as long as Alex could spare. He’d listen to Alex complain about the cold and wax lyrical about his research in equal measure, then dutifully report on departmental gossip and David’s latest antics, and it was wonderfully, beautifully easy between them.
Henry wouldn’t have believed it were possible, but he’d fallen even more in love with Alex over that pixelated video feed and a flurry of back-and-forth emails, one week at a time. By the end of seven months, there was no question that his feelings were reciprocated. Not with the way Alex’s face would light up every time the video connected. Not with the way that their conversations became more intimate, sharing their deepest hopes and fears. Maybe they hadn’t said the words, but Henry could feel them, all the way from the other side of the globe.
Flying down to Chile to meet Alex’s ship at the end of the season was probably a little overboard, especially since Alex doesn’t know he’s here, but Henry can’t wait any longer. His nervousness sizzles under his skin and buzzes in his ears, but it all falls away the moment Alex turns the corner and walks into the area where a smattering of others are waiting for the overwinterers to disembark. He’s thinner than he was when he left New York, his usually warm bronze skin oddly sallow after half a year without the sun, but even so, somehow he’s even more gorgeous than when he left, and Henry’s breath catches in his throat.
Alex’s eyes sweep idly across the gathered crowd. He’s not expecting anyone. Then they land on Henry, and he stops dead, ignoring the dirty looks he gets from the people walking behind him. His face is slack in shock, mouth hanging open. Henry hasn’t taken a breath in what feels like several minutes.
Then Alex drops his duffle bag on the floor and takes off at a sprint toward him, and Henry catches him, nearly lifting Alex off the ground as Alex throws his arms around his neck and buries his face in Henry’s shoulder. It takes Henry a moment to realize he’s shaking, his gasping breaths shuddering through his body as he holds on for dear life.
“You asshole,” Alex nearly sobs into his chest, “I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you were coming. I can’t believe you’re here.”
“I had to,” Henry says helplessly. “I had to see you, love.”
Finally, Alex pulls his head back. His long eyelashes are suspiciously wet. “I’m so fucking glad you’re here.”
And this time, when Henry kisses him, he knows neither of them will ever forget it.

"This is about surviving a landscape beyond human survivability, it strips away all pretensions!"
The team shared a long, quiet look. On the contract they'd all signed before heading south it stated, it decisive block capitals, "MOVING TO ANTARCTICA IS NOT THE ANSWER TO YOUR PROBLEMS," and it was becoming increasingly clear to everyone that Skeen had skipped this, and possibly his mandatory evaluation.
Last week a passing South African fishing ship had tossed Brasso half a frozen springbok, and they were eating it now with a sauce Cassian had willed into existence from powered soup and cordial. The microbiology team's band, briefly torn apart by a vicious argument about sponges, had reformed and was gamely mixing up the verses to wonderwall. Vel's petrochemical report had become a sort of collaborative creative writing project, with everyone taking turns to come up with a plausibly scientific way to tell her corporate sponsors to fuck off. There were lots of way to get yourself killed overwintering at Yavin Station, but a lack of human companionship wasn't an obvious one, except possibly to Skeen, who was developing the feverish look of a man who thinks if he walks long enough he might actually reach the horizon.

So I had this pepper plant randomly grow on my balcony, I'm not sure if I even planted that, sometimes edible plants will grow without my intervention because seeds get lost in the soil. Anyway I didn't pay any attention to it, because it's too late to transplant it to the garden, it was growing in the middle of the summer, and I just put it next to my other plants so it would get watered.
I noticed the other day that the plant was starting to grow little fruit on it! It had tiny little peppers! They were adorable, and quite admirable because that plant had only tiny bit of soil to grow in, it was ambitious to go and try growing peppers from basically no nutrition.
Peppers can actually survive the winter if you grow them in a pot and put them inside, you can have them next spring producing peppers again! They're not gonna produce in winter when there's not enough hours of sunlight, but they can be a nice ornamental plant. So I decided, this would be the destiny of my little volounteer pepper. I moved it into a bigger pot that happened to be empty, and took off all of the tiny peppers, so the plant would focus on producing bigger roots instead. Once a plant produces seed she can call it a day and die because she fulfilled her purpose. If you take seeds/fruits away, she will re-evaluate her situation and try growing bigger. That's what I want!

See this little grey plastic pot I'm holding, that's where the plant managed to grow to this size and grow fruit. I think that shows a level of stubbornness and resilience I'm looking for in a plant. This is going to be my pet pepper growing in my kitchen during the winter and hopefully, possibly, she might give me peppers early in the spring.

We got our early vote on Saturday. In addition to the elections, there were several referendums to amend The City's charter. One of the referendums, No. 5908, related to 3 amendments aimed at curbing gun violence in the city. The Republican-controlled state house and senate fought to have those referendums kept off the ballot and, when they lost in court, they withheld state tax revenue funds due to the city.
As is our tradition, we made a date out of it by going to a restaurant afterwards:

Overwintering the Milfoils I grew from seed cause they were losing vigor. One surprised me and sent out a flower even though they weren't supposed to until next year.
Of all the native seeds I planted, these did the best by far and they really do respond aggressively to fertilizer.
I'm going to pull them into the garage instead of transplanting them this year when the foliage dies.
