6—Calypso's Birthday [Fic]

Just posted the second-to-last chapter of The Marks Left On Your Skin.

Just a regular WIP step this time, but it also gives a better view of the leg tattoos:

I did make version with the half up hair for continuity's sake (see second illustration), but felt it made everything feel unbalanced... also went back and forth on the shadow intensity.

I was thinking about this post from @asneakyfox that talks about how so much pre-S2 fic expected Ed to perform Blackbeard at Stede when they reunited. I've been reading a lot of older fic recently, especially some of the big AU series, and I'm struck by another way that S2 surprised us re: their relationship...

Ed is the one who needs things to be slow

In pre-S2 fic, Ed is pretty consistently depicted as being sexually experienced, as being the one to move things forward physically. Even though he's shown as being gentle and respectful and understanding (tbh I just don't read fic where he isn't), Stede is the one putting on the brakes. Ed is "the masc one" and therefore he's "the sexual one".

This usually goes hand-in-hand with Baby Gay Stede characterization, which is my headcanon but it's never explicitly noted in canon.

I really love that what S2 gave us was so different. Ed gets to ask for more time. Ed needs gentleness and he is allowed to ask for that.

So often men of color are characterized as being explicitly sexual (even over-sexual); as always wanting sex and therefore unable to be harmed by it; as pushing for more.

Ed gets to ask for time. Ed gets to ask for softness, and he receives it.

And the thing is, Ed never got to have nice things before, beautiful things. He'd spent his life being told those weren't for him to have, and maybe he'd become a pirate in the first place to prove them wrong, to spit in their faces and just take what others said he couldn't have.

But all that treasure had been no good to fill the empty space within his rib cage. It had taken a strange man with morning coats and a full fire hazard library and a collection of summer linens to finally teach Ed's heart how to beat properly.

Stede was all about beautiful things.

And maybe Stede was the most beautiful thing Ed had ever wanted to claim as his own - not as petty revenge, this time, but simply to treasure.

Sooo.... just had the idea for a bookclub, but instead of books we read fanfics and we talk about it when we're done.

‘Never,’ Stede says, before diving back into kissing Ed while saying, directly into his mouth, ‘Anything you want, Ed, I’m going to give it to you, I will do anything to give it to you, all you have to do is ask and I will -’ Ed’s losing his mind with Stede’s words, he had no idea he could love someone the way he loves Stede, like he’s the Earth and Stede’s the sky, and together they’re fucking, fucking turning colours like the Aurora because Stede lights him up so - he wraps one leg around Stede’s, tries to get closer, as Stede unties his robe, slides his hands up Ed’s naked chest, drapes the robe around them -  Stede suddenly grabs him under the thighs and fucking lifts him up the wall; Ed, shocked, wraps his legs around Stede’s waist and hangs on for dear life as Stede mouths down his neck and onto his chest, digging his fingers into the meat of Ed’s legs. Ed throws his head back, panting, and when Stede grazes his nipple, he makes a yowling noise that he distantly hopes Anne and Mary will mistake for cats fucking in the garden. 

I'm so in love with @veeagainsttheday's spectacular fic Seabird, set during WWII as civilian pilot Stede and his crew are sent on an unintended round-the-world voyage by circumstances beyond their control. Chapter Three had THE most swoon-worthy romantic moment, and I had to do some art for it! ‘This doesn’t feel like a fucking sandcastle to me,’ Ed says.

I mean! Absolutely peak gorgeousness- I very highly recommend.

Innkeeper Era OFMD Fic Recs

Hey friends, I was organizing my ofmd fic bookmarks and figured I'd throw together a rec list of a few of my favorite post season 2 fics in case anyone is needing this kind of stuff atm. This is by no means a full list of even all my favorites and I'm sure I've missed some good ones, but I've tried to include a good variety of themes and also not make this post extremely long. <3 love you all so much, I don't do much talking in fandom spaces, but you are all incredible and I appreciate each and every one of you

Hey there lovelies. I hope you know just how much you mean to one another. One of the big things that came from people leaving twitter and joining other platforms, is how much love that's been going around. I've seen quite a lot of people mentioning just how much OFMD has meant to them and their families in case they couldn't find folks on other platforms, and it's been so very heartwarming.

I've also seen some pretty scary things... and people banding together to help each other. I know sometimes it's hard to see when we're in the thick of it-- but we really are stronger together. Even if everyone doesn't always get along fandomwise-- you all step up when things are tough, and that's what crew is all about, and it's beautiful.

You're beautiful.

Remember to be kind to yourself no matter what happens today. You deserve the same kindness you give, even when you don't have it in you that day. Take care lovelies, be well.

I think the closest thing I‘ll ever accept as a proof of god‘s existence are fix-it fanfictions. Jesus sounds great and all - but have you ever had a post canon fanfic that was so well written that it sounded like it was actually canon and you felt as if all your wounds were suddenly healed?? THAT‘S a religious experience if there ever was one, if you ask me.
