This map illustrates the history of the Kingdom of the Vandals and Alans (435–534 CE), a state established in North Africa after the Vandals, a Germanic tribe, and the Alans, an Iranian-speaking nomadic group from the Sarmatian peoples, migrated together through Europe and crossed into Africa. Centered in Carthage, the kingdom rose to prominence as a dominant naval power in the western Mediterranean...

There is a very recent (couple of weeks ago?) Spanish publication on the famous Visigothic cloisonné eagle brooches. Apparently, and according to the two researchers, these cannot be eagles because they appear in female burials, and thus cannot have warrior-related burial goods... They suggest those are peacocks rather than eagles, because they are 'feminine' animals, and not warrior-related.
(just to be clear, I think that this new interpretation is... not solid)
My god I have seen so many of these “they must be eagles because their beaks curve”.
I have not once found a source that gives good reasoning for why bird brooches would depict eagles. And I have to say, peacocks are a new one…
More likely explanations are corvids because of the eddic texts, animism, beasts of battle,… but someone who claims to be certain of this is talking nonsense because it’s nowhere written down or anything. It’s a guessing game.
Also depictions of birds of prey with… well prey exist, and although the Pavo genus are omnivores, they’re not hunters. Also duck shaped brooches and appliqués exist, minimizing the possibility of it being a peacock.
The Pavo genus is a tropical bird, with origins in for example India. Garnet is found in South East Asia so tradesmen might have seen multiple peacocks on their journeys. But no one really starts animal devotion out of nowhere for no reason. Why would they anyways?
A lot of gothic brooches are inlayed with garnet, believed by some to be resembling Freya’s Brísingamen. Although one can discuss the exact look of “Freya’s flaming necklace”, garnets do give an appearance described as “flaming red”. So they might be very feminine yes, and this style was indeed worn by women, birds themselves were not exclusively worn by or meant for women.
I agree 1000% with you. Not the most solid theory. But so is mine… that’s just Germanic archaeology

Goths

Do not approach them, lest they bury their heads in the sand and get their earrings stuck.
do you have any facts about goth culture
Goths dress dark to hide themselves. Goths who are easier to see from their brighter clothing are called Visigoths.

So, I was making a list of all the albums that I could and wanted to buy if I happened to come across them at a flea market, or maybe somewhere else.
I was listening to Judas Priest and their song Heavy Metal on their album Ram it Down, which was released on May 9th, 1988.
My mother came into my room, I could hear her footsteps and I took out my earphones, and had closed the tab I had in the background on my computer. I had doodled the song name and title, and I was making my list for albums to buy.
(The title styling for the list didn't look all that right, I was trying to evoke the feel of those 80s metal band names that are all spiky and stuff, but not black metal.)
I was throwing the album list paper away, and my mom was like "let me see what you have there." She took it, and was like "Judas Priest, Alice Cooper! Heavy Metal! You're turning into a Metalhead!!"
"I was just doodling, ya know." I told her. "I don't want it for Christmas or anything." And she was like "I haven't listened to Priest or Cooper, I don't really know much about them."
She looked over my Christmas list, which wasn't that concerning. Just some socks, music things.. like maybe a shirt or something and some other stuff too.
A few moments later, my dad came in with a glass of milk, and was like "What's this that I hear about you liking Demonic music? I'm gonna have to say a prayer for you." My dad said laughing as he took a drink of the glass of milk that he had brought with him.
"It's not like that, I was just doodling, and stuff." I told him, and grabbed my Christmas list to show him what I wanted.
"You really want an instamatic camera, where it prints the film?" My dad asked with a smile, and I told him that I did for Christmas, because why not, they're cool.
My dad about me liking the METAL was like "I'd rather you listen to Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers."
This really happened, and I thought that I was gonna get smacked for liking metal. My parents aren't big Metalheads They don't really like it. I on the other hand like all sorts of metal bands like Ozzy, Kiss, Dio, Motley Crue, Gwar, Dokken, Iron Maiden, Alice Cooper, Praying Mantis, Ostrogoth, The Ramones, and a whole slew of others that I can't name off the top of my head at the moment. I also like the early 00s metal, and nu-scene as well as goth music, which IT IS A MUSIC BASED SUBCULTURE FIRST AND FOREMOST!!!
Anyway, if this is TL;DR I thought that I was going to get smacked by my parents for them finding out that I liked metal, and things adjacent to that whole genre of music.
