A sort of-kind of review for Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Darkest Hour #118. Kinda. Spoilers below the cut, because this issue was...kind of impressive. Ish.

Due to @ikindamaybewanthertositonmyface bringing to my attention that I should really read the latest Darkest Hour issue, I have pulled a speed run and...have some feelings...

I'm ALMOST 80% sure that this is Boom!'s way of saying that Coinless Trini is queer, for which we might all give infinite thanks. If she's not an old lesbian, she's at LEAST an old bisexual. Either is good and I will TAKE IT. Even if the implications moving forward aren't great.

On the one hand, the Tommy & Rita team-up is something that does mean that maybe we the audience will get to see Rita grow into Mystic Mother of her own volition; but on the other hand, if Tommy goes down into the road to forgiveness and ACTIVELY tries to bring her into the light, I am going to be sick.

Okay...I am more alright with Slayer Kim still having obvious Drakkon issues if it means Tommy gets to get tossed around like a ragdoll--but like, with good intention. This was kind of funny.

*Deep, Deep Breath* GROW YOUR FUCKING SKIN BACK AND I WILL BE MORE THAN OKAY WITH YOU TWO HOOKING UP. PLEASE, FOR FUCK'S SAKE, LET THIS UNION BE COMFORTABLE. Anything is better than going into a marriage because of a roofie. PLEASE.

I'm gonna say it: Trini actually looks really good in red. It FITS.

Also, one million points for giving both Trini/Zack and Omega OT3 shots for those in the fandom that multiship and just LOVE these babies being in shot together. I miss them as a unit. They fill each other out.

....I imagine this is very much what others wanted to alert me to. And when I read it the first time I was over the moon. I made the most stupid fucking noise ever when I got down to Jason saying what these two DESERVE to hear. He's met their Coinless counterparts, he knows what they're capable of being, he is a leader and a shine can recognize a shine. But. Then I read it again. And again.

They are training to back up the Rangers if the fight comes to Earth and the fucking lava zombies come knocking. Zelya has just cast a very dark shadow of doubt and fear in their awareness of the Rangers knowing her and not being able to contact her. Bulk speaks the truth. Coinless Bulk is locked up for who the hell knows why with Scorpina and the others, and Coinless Skull is still missing in action AS a lava zombie.

I am...so scared for them.

I don't keep up with the comics, so when I first read about the Death Ranger drama, I thought it was about Deathryuger, the Dark Ranger's Sentai counterpart.

Yeah, I'm pretty stupid, because I thought Heckyl just came out as non-binary.

Nah, you ain't stupid cause honestly, anything I know about the comics comes from other blogs and twitter accounts. So like, all I know about Death Ranger is that they come from the Omega Rangers comics and that they are among the comics attempts at non-binary rep that the comics uh, don't seem great at handling (or twitter accounts in this drama's case). But also hey, you never know with Heckyl, the comics do like to do their own things with the characters so like, nothing is impossible.

Wow, been ages right? Well, all I wanted was to express my adoration for this ship. I just want to thank Ryan Parrott for writing just how cute they were and while in one universe they never got to reconcile, there's always another one where they did. Still a little rusty, but I'll swing back into it if I ever make any more... again. I've been all too reminded how much of a pain rendering is. Lol. So for you Jason x Trini fans (like myself) this is for ya'll.

Because last anon got me thinking about it, I quick whipped up a little spreadsheet of all the show-canon MMPRs' alternate suits in the comics! Some interesting bits to note:

Kim has the most, at 16 suits. Not a surprise as she got a major boost from Ranger Slayer.

Trini is the runner-up at 14 suits. She also got a boost thanks to her Coinless counterpart being more of a major character than others, as well as her Omega color change.

Jason and Zack are tied at 11 suits, due to their characters missing out on certain team suits; specifically their Coinless counterparts not being present for Darkest Hour and thus no Drakkon Ranger or White Combo suits.

As said in my response to anon, Tommy has ten suits, but a majority of that is only because of Drakkon. If I didn't count Drakkon, he'd have less than Billy. (especially since i'm not sure if i should reallyyyyy count Metallic Armor White, as he wore that in the show.)

Billy has the least of the original six, at only six suits. Technically five and a half really, as I'm not sure if Tricera Armor counted - but hey, it DOES exist. He gets brought down by missing a ton of story-relevant suits - he's kidnapped when the team gets their Green suits and misses out on all the Coinless suits by his counterpart being dead.

Aisha has the least overall at only two suits. Rocky and Adam only beat her out because of their infected suits.

You can make an argument that whatever ship Tommy is in is inherently toxic. But this one for whatever reason just extra bothers me??? I think it does have partly to do with the movie where she goes temporarily evil. They immediately try to kill each other when evil or threaten to do harm and the other just. Takes it. I don’t like that??? At all??? At least with Tommy and Kat they’re slightly more proactive trying to snap each other out of it. And do not get me started on Drakkon and Kim-

And the way the fans go feral for them I…don’t get it. I’m glad they do, but some of them can be so smug about their otp and like. Ok cool you like the most popular ship. Stop coping about how it’s not endgame, that doesn’t do anything for your reputation. I don’t seriously want the mega shippers dead but maybe…not so snotty? Tommy’s a hoe. There’s a multiverse. Jason/Trini:

It felt so out of character for the two to be attracted to each other. It just did. You coulda made two side characters from the same high school who somehow ended up as red and yellow omega rangers and it would have held the same weight or maybe more because you could have made them be already dating and could have taken new characters into a new direction and ir woulda fit

This does not fit and it sucks. It didn’t even feel like the comic writers wanted it they just wanted drama

So, things between Jason and Kim are turning more intimate like I predicted before…they’re comforting each other around many things: Jason’s grief, Tommy’s absence, Jason out of MMPR and Omega team, Kim’s unhappiness’ around MMPR… I have a feeling I got this.

Simple as 1, 2, 3…Kimberly is unhappy around Tommy’s leadership since Jason, Trini and Zack left and is always irritated towards Tommy and it happens that he sacrificed himself in order to take care of her. It will lead Kim to give up MMPR pink powers to Kat, in order of Tommy’s sake and the fact she’s not happy in the team for a while. Then my theory is that Jason and her will be together in their loneliness and fall in love with each other, situation that will explain their behavior in Turbo Movie events and, with luck, explain Jason/Emily in Zeo. “Darkest Hour” maybe will explain that time between Zeo and Turbo, Jason gaining Gold Zeo Rangers powers (and trying to run from his feelings for Kim with Emily) and Kim leaving MMPR team after Tommy’s sacrifice for her because she will realize that she isn’t happy being a ranger anymore, fact that will set in Pink comics once for all.

Power Rangers Rewrite: Mighty Morphin'

Season 1 & Background

Because the Boom Comics actually expounds on their backstories, Rita & Zedd have their comics backstories. Rita is specifically from a planet known as Bandora, which has a lot of magical practitioners, including an organized order of witches.

Bandorans are taller than humans, and to a human eye always look a little sickly.

The Power Coins used to belong to a multi planetary team (the Zyu Rangers) with explicitly Alien Zords resembling the 2017 movie. Rita killed the Green Ranger and took that Coin, thus control of the Dragonzord.

The 90’s Zyu Rangers interpreted the Zords on the Coins as artistic renditions of Earth animals, thus minorly reformatting the Zords when they’re finally brought to bear.

Jason actually beats Tommy during their fight like in Zyuranger.

Season 2

Grace Sterling gets introduced, and Zordon tells the story of the 1969 Rangers.

The Stone Canyon Trio are introduced, giving an outside perspective to the Rangers.

Zedd doesn’t arrive…yet. He does send messages to Rita in the form of nightmares.

No Thunderzords, the Zyu/Dino Megazord survives, since I wanna keep the Dairangers (Thunder Star Rangers) in my back pocket.

In the same vein, Tommy doesn’t get the White Tiger Power Coin after losing the Green Power Coin, instead he gets a White Brachiosaurus Power Coin that ties him to Titanus, which itself is reformatted to serve as armor and weaponry for the Zyu Megazord.

Tommy’s Ranger Suit is white and gold, with the MM sculpted mouth helmet and Dragon shield, but with elements of the Dino Thunder Black suit, while Saba is literally just a repainted Bracchio Staff.

Before Tommy comes back, Rita launches the Dark Ranger’s scheme from the comics, which comes to an end once Tommy arrives, destroying the Dark Ranger’s Power Source (A Dark Mockery of a Zeo Crystal?)

The Rita putty escapes, albeit heavily wounded, to fight another day.

Kiya comes to Earth following the Dark Rangers, chasing the power source used. She sticks around for a while.

The first half of the season ends with a final confrontation with Goldar when he attempts to throw Angel Grove into the Dark Dimension during Jason, Trini & Zack’s graduation, and is struck down by Tommy and Jason. The Stone Canyon Trio helps.

Jason, Trini and Zack decide to take a gap year, and are given the Omega Morphers to help Kiya hunt down the source of the knockoff Zeo Crystal, while the Stone Canyon Trio take their places.

Rito arrives afterwards, with some new mercenaries to give the Rangers trouble, including Dayne. Scorpina, meanwhile, leaves, vowing vengeance against the Rangers.

Their adventures include a crossover with the Masked Rider of Edenoi.

The season finale is Zedd’s arrival, Serpentera in tow, and challenges the Rangers to combat.

He destroys the Megazord with Serpentera, before taking them on 1-v-6, rendering the Power Coins useless one after the other, until only Tommy is left with his powers.

Tommy tries, but Zedd captures him, and brings him back to the Moon Castle, leaving the other Rangers to lick their wounds and wallow in their powerlessness.

Season 3

With the Power Coins useless, the Omega Rangers out of contact and Zordon unable to access back-up Ranger powers, Zordon sends the Rangers to Ninjor to create powers of their own.

In the meanwhile, he calls for reinforcements, the Rangers of Aquitar (known as the Doron Rangers), with more on the way.

Zedd sends more monsters to delay the Rangers, and gathers forces fromDark Spector, including Master Vile, to attempt and summon the dark god Lokar from the Talus Dimension.

The Rangers pass Ninjor’s trials and gain their Ninjetti Power Coins and Zords, with all new suits coming with them.

They have elements of the American Ninja Ranger uniforms, the Dairangers, with MM helmets remodeled to reflect their new Zords.

Meanwhile, Tommy is being held by the villains, where he strikes up a friendship with Finster, who eventually helps free him.

During this escape, he finds remnants of the tools used in the corruption of the Green Dragon Power Coin, and takes it.

The Rangers return to Earth and meet the Doron rangers. There’s some chafing, especially between Billy and Cestro, though that rivalry shifts into something more…amorous.

Tommy arrives, Finster by his side and arcane secrets in hand. Finster and Alpha duke it out at least once.

In the background, we’re introduced to new transfer students Tanya Sloan and Kat Hillard. Kat gets mind controlled but it gets broken.

Eventually, Finster, Alpha, Tideus and Delphine figure out how to reactivate the Dragonzord, dormant since the loss of the Green Power Coin, and Tommy uses the power of friendship to bring it back under control.

Master Vile attempts to interfere, but the Rangers strike him down with Ninjor’s help. 

Deciding to take advantage, the rangers attack the moon palace, reinforced by the Masked Rider and the Omega Rangers (Now with Yale replacing Kiya)

The Rangers win, destroying Serpentera, and wrecking the moon base, though Lokar is summoned.

In order to seal him, the Mighty Morphin Rangers sacrifice the Ninjetti Power Coins to do so, while Tommy’s powers once again become unstable.

In the aftermath, the rangers disperse. Kim goes off to pursue her gymnastics career, Billy leaves for Aquitar as a representative of Earth, NASADA, and Prometheus.

Aisha also leaves to join humanitarian aid.

Tommy, a bit adrift, decides to stay with Adam and Rocky, and possibly form a new team.

After all, while they did beat them up, they never saw Rita, Rito, or Zedd actually fall…

Boom!Comics, what if Drakkon had actually died at the end of Shattered Grid??

....Oh, fuck this is gonna be hard. Lemme think.

It's so hard to pull on this thread and follow a single end loosed from it. There's so much to be addressed.

Kiya would have to be given consideration, because the writers fucked up with her in ways that are still ringing out in Darkest Hour. She needed treatment for her PTSD and Survivor's Guilt and killing the Blue Emissary. So I think Trini would have to actually tap into her Yellow potential WITHOUT Drakkon's goading.

The Eltarian Invasion would have to go through a speed run, because the Omega Rangers wouldn't make the incredibly stupid decision to nick Drakkon out of the Command Center and go galivanting about the universe based on his advice--more to the point, would the Red Emissary even be caught unawares by the Orange Empyreal if he wasn't checking in on Drakkon? No.

The bullshit with Zedd and the Dome Arc would have to still be gone through, because otherwise Matt wouldn't be revealed, and Zordon would still have to be proven wrong, so the stress would be even greater because the Omegas DIDN'T defy Zordon in this timeline and leave a crack in his ego, so the punishment for Billy would have been much differently handled...I think.

Tommy and Matt's dick measuring contest would have to be forestalled by Zack and Jason being unwilling to not look at things from Matt's POV, and I should like for Billy to have actually talked out his reasoning not just with the Stone Canyon Trio--though I still want that--but with Kimberly and Tommy. They've all been stressed out and under pressure and he needs someone who isn't new or hasn't been gone that could actually understand him. And possibly call him out sooner for keeping secrets from them when THEY aren't Zordon.

I would like to think that Zartus would make an effort to turn up the charm and use a charisma check to try and get Zordon on his side, but that means he would have to come to Earth while both the Red and Yellow Emissaries are alive and thus he only has control of the one Empyreal so he has to take care about sending it to particular planets to decimate.

Which means sending the Sentry Force Four to pick up Zelya and interrupt her dating Skull so she blew him off BEFORE she and Bulk had a heart to heart. BEFORE the Dome was placed over Angel Grove.

I think, for lack of any other way into understanding, the Rangers would contact the Coinless Universe in the hopes that THEY would have some idea what the Empyreal they met actually was.

Which, fun times for all, because YES, actually, TWO people from there do.

Ranger Slayer, Coinless Bulk, Sentry Skull end up popping over to the Prime universe to lend a hand. Skull happily dragging Finster-5 along with them because they're the two.

And Coinless Jason comes along, too, much to the distress of everyone there that was under the impression that he was dead. Kim thought he could use a breath of fresh air away from their world's rebuilding process and Jason was grateful for the chance to see a version of Billy and Angel Grove still standing.

And--except for Kim--they're all wearing Colors the others weren't expecting. White for Jason, Purple for Bulk, and--much to the discomfort of the Omega Rangers--Orange for Skull.

The Orange especially leaving the Omegas with a prickling sensation in the back of their minds. A bad aftertaste from the Empyreal.

"Fun fact about those fucking things? You can get rid of them, but you have to find the corpse of the Emissary they were born from and find a Ranger with a correlating Color to punch the corpse," is Skull's first observation after Finster's creepy explanation about the origin of the Empyreals ("Yeah, there are three of them. Opposite of their Primary Color counterpart. But at least you can count on them to cut to the chase instead of pulling some metaphorical lyricist bullshit,") with a tiredness that nobody expected from one of the Coinless after they gained their world back.

It's a lot of talking, a lot of convoluted back and forth about why the Empyreal would seem like it was on a mission for job instead of fulfilling their divine purpose.

I would like to think that the Omegas would propose team-up with the Coinless until things got straightened out. With the elder Kim, Bulk, and Jason remaining on Earth in case the Empyreal came knocking and Finster-5 and Skull coming with them on the Spectrum II in the hopes of cutting off more planets being killed.

Skull takes them up on their offer without looking to the other Coinless for consideration, given that it feels like everything is an a time limit and it's not like he could have left the Command Center to visit the Juice Bar or anything, despite Bulk's protests.

"I look too much like myself. It's fine."

Finster-5 does not really have much of a choice in the matter since he's on eternal probation and will do whatever the Ranger Slayer tells him to do.

However, Slayer Kim would probably have to go back and forth between one Earth and another to keep the peace, and Coinless Zack and Trini would pop in here and there as the ball really got rolling with the Eltarians showing up, acting as if they want to forge a proper alliance with Earth JUST before Zedd raises his metaphorical finger and everything is way more out in the open than it ever had any right to be.

I want Zedd to get a proper body. I want Zordon to get his own proper body. I want Rita to get yanked back to the Eath and given to Grace Sterling because the Omegas and Skull found her Dumpster spinning through space and weren't going to take the chance that Finster-5 would do something stupid. I think Jason would trust her a little more and would want to curry favor with someone other than Zordon...just in case.

I am also going to use this as an excuse to cut out the middle man so she can't be called on by Vile and therefore bring about Dark Specter using Zordon's old body. Zordon's getting that back so he and Zedd can beat the crap out of Zartus and be MORTAL so they both have certain expectations of accountability when they fuck up.

I also want to use this as an excuse for Zordon still getting called out, but I want it to be by someone that he wasn't expecting: like Purple Ranger Bulk finding the "spare change" in the Command Center and taking Zordon to task about trust and destiny and how even if the Rangers are now soldiers, they're also children and it's really not right to mess about without consulting them.

"Because 'you said so' is not an answer."

There is still a situation where the Empyreal goes to wipe out the Hartunians, but because Skull is not Drakkon and they'd have no reason to leave him behind on the ship, age and experience would be on their side. All but 40 members of the population wouldn't have to die--Skull would merely tear out the the king's heart so the queen could either aid them or perish. Which works splendidly as during the evacuation process it becomes very clear that the Empyreal is under someone else's command, and that someone can be traced to the Celestial Shard that formed with the Blue Emissary's death from their heart.

Hartunia is still destroyed and rendered 'Anew' but the people are alive and under new rule and relocated to an unoccupied world where they can start again without weapons or the scavenging practices and under the rule of Evor Till who winds up swearing fealty to the Rangers, with the promise to aid them if ever they call.

It leaves the Omegas rather shaken that they didn't fail and actually have somewhere to turn to make things better, but it also leaves them feeling sick that there's a version of Skull--living on their ship until things pan out--that would kill someone without hesitation or even appearing remorseful.

I really, really want the home team Bulk and Skull to get at least a little consideration from either Zordon or Grace Sterling in this scenario.

....That's all I've got. I'm sorry. This was hard.

The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers started out as a polycule of 5, and then Tommy showed up and it became a polycule of 6. But then Zack, Trini, and Jason had to leave to become the Omega Rangers go to a peace conference. So they split into two polycules of 3, meanwhile another polycule of 3 (Aisha, Rocky, and Adam) joined the Power Rangers. Then Kimberly left and Billy and Tommy didn't work as a couple without her, so Billy eventually withdrew from the relationship entirely, leaving the Zeo Rangers as one polycule of 3 and then a very cishet passing TomKat couple that sometimes had threesomes with Jason but never made him an official part of the relationship.

Still believe in the best (imo)ending for Kiya: Blue leader of the Omegas, Journey lives and is Gold, Kevor is red (it literally matches his personality WHY did they make Trini Red) and Yale is Yellow I guess? It kinda makes sense

It is kinda funny how Trini getting Red really wasn't....celebrated the way they clearly thought it would be. Trini becoming leader was very heavily foreshadowed through the Omega storylines, so I don't think THAT was a surprise to anybody, but I guess not actually seeing the power transition made that aspect of her promotion feel arbitrary rather than simply giving Harturian Kid the morpher that was suddenly free to use and Trini becoming a Yellow leader. It would be like if Ari had Red powers next time we saw the Solars because she needs Red to be considered leader of their team.

But I think this is what I'd do if I had complete freedom, starting with the Charge to 100 era -

= Journey does the whole thing with Gold and lives, while Spa'ark passes on.

= Jason, Zack, and Trini ALL retire. Arkon gets Yellow and Harturian Kid gets Black. No one gets Red because with the connection to Spa'ark via Jason's possession, no one knows if those powers are safe to use.

= Through a narrative in Darkest Hour that discusses her trauma and redeems her Kiya goes from Drakkon Ranger Blue to Omega Red.

= at the end of Darkest Hour Arkon either retires or dies (leaning toward dies since he feels like a character that would get the chopping block if the narrative needed a death that would feel sad, but not like a huge loss) and the Yellow morpher goes to Raegyn, to pay off how she got her own hardcover exclusive story for some reason.

So at the end of the series the New Omegas are Red Kiya, Yellow Raegyn, Black Kevor, Blue Yale, and Gold Journey. I would love for Kiya to get Blue back but I really can't think of a way for that to happen without feeling clunky (and just realistically, BOOM loves Yale and would never take their powers away, even for other powers lol)
