#Oliver and Hal friendship

Oliver can't stand being around the Halbarry.

Sometimes I get to thinking, how must Ollie feel knowing that his best friend, with whom he has had incredible adventures and whom he loves like a brother; is in love with the guy he can't even stand?

Imagine.

You're Ollie and one day out of nowhere your best friend starts making a bunch of comments about how cute Barry is and how much he wants to hug and spend time with him. At first you ignore him and think he's just obsessed with another blond, until you start to realize how really pushy Hal is on the subject without him even realizing it. Ollie realizes what's going on, but denies it.

He can accept anything but that.

So he talks to Dinah about it, trying to calm her paranoia.

He wants his wife to tell him that she hasn't noticed anything unusual, but his wife was quite calm on the subject and even proposes to help them be together. Of course Oliver refuses at first, not planning to accept Barry as his other brother; but after realizing how fucking in love they were and how obvious it is, he ends up disgusted and desperate to see how neither of them do anything and finally along with Dinah end up getting them to be together. Still Ollie wasn't thrilled and perhaps on more than one occasion tried to find him a date with any blonde, blue-eyed guy who was more fun than Barry, hoping his best friend would reconsider his crush.

Evidently it didn't work out.

So he ends up accepting his brother's relationship against his will.

(Deep down he's happy to see Hal so excited and knows Barry is a good choice, but Ollie is proud enough to never accept that he does like Barry a little. But only a little.)

Bruce: so we need to go to China for a lab that might help with this problem we have, Dr. Liu has this serum. West go get it.

Wally: can't, not allowed to step foot on China's ground unless the government says so.

Clark: you're banned from China... What did you do, kiddo?

Wally: didn't want the Flash in there since I can go without going through airports and any other ways into the country. I'm also banned from Texas, Iowa, Tennessee, Mexico, and nine county in Europe.

Bruce: you forgot New Jersey.

Wally, smirking: og I'm banned from there but that one I don't care as much to follow that rule.

Bruce, grumbled: I know.

Wally, get up: welp I'll get the serum.

Clark: but you said you were banned...

Wally: I never listened to government body or Hal, why start now!

Diana: he was raised well.

Oliver: he raised by that scary woman, he's just a taller Iris....

Diana: I need to meet this woman.

Wally, come back: oooo momma having a dinner on Sunday for the family and speedster to come over and eat, you should come over!

Diana: ah, I'll be delighted to.

Oliver: I have a bad feeling about this...

Bruce, who got beat up with Iris shoes for getting her son kidnapped and forgot to save him, shudder: me too...

Hal: can't be too bad.

Arthur, taking the serums: ... Can I come over tho?

Wally: sure!

Clark: I think this is good for us to bond outside of heroing, can we all go Wally?

Wally: we're cooking a lot so more the merrier, and Bruce can finally feel sunlight!

Bruce, grumbled in he knows Alfred will force him to go too: hate this place...

Wally: best to get used to this now before I marry your son, but this is a weekly thing and you are expected to come every time.

Rachel Roth - Probably I see her sympathizers and talking with Wanda Maximoff. While Magneto is nowhere near a bad of a father as Trigon is, they still can both relate to having less than ideal fathers and how their friends are their real family. Oh And yeah I see Rae getting along well with Wanda’s kids Tommy and especially Billy

Victor Stone - I can see him no doubt fawning and being utterly amazed by the tech at Stark Industries especially all those various Iron Suits. Rhodey is the one giving him the extensive tour and they’d have so much to talk about

Garfield Logan - For him, I can see him paling around with all the Wolvies, in particular Laura and Logan themselves. He looks up to Logan no doubt for the latter’s coolness factor and in turn Logan looks at this green fella with some uncertainty for how overtly excited he is but he finds it charming. Also no doubt Gar can shift into an actual Wolverine if Jonathan the Wolverine needs anything

One things for certain everyone here; they are all very uncomfortable with both Frank Castle and Wade Wilson. For differing reasons but still

Who do you think is closer? Oliver and Hal or Hal and Barry?

I’ve always thought Barry and Hal but I know both have their own unique relationship with Hal and they are both his best friends in a sense, but I’m just curious on your thoughts on them y’know?

I mean I think the narrative would tell you it's Hal and Barry. Even from Oliver's point of view. After Barry died in 1986 and Crisis kicked off New Earth everyone got really weird. Ollie stopped being so close with Hal and they Really pushed him and Dinah more. And then Ollie killed himself on a plane so you know and Hal resurrected him. But on the other side you had Hal contextually now that the Speed Force is more established full on inventing a spirit of Barry to speak with in made up Heaven with Ollie which is funny. Ollie has himself classified Barry and Hal as like brothers to each other. On the other hand Barry has griped that he dislikes Ollie being Hal's friend cause he thinks he's a bad friend to Hal. Which is all things one can take into account.

Another hard truth is Hal's friendship with Barry is easier emotionally and physically. Hal went on a roadtrip with Ollie but it was hard because Ollie was trying to deal with his alcoholism. While when Hal sees Barry they got out for dinner and call them dates. I don't think either Hal or Barry in any state of conscious mind have hit each other.

Hal is also an Uncle to Ollie and Barry's kids. Hal helps Roy out of his own pit where Ollie failed. And on the flip Hal was almost overbearing to Wally after Barry's death. Both call him Uncle Hal and are very close. Wally is close to Hal because explicitly Hal and Barry were so close that's how Wally got to be kid lantern something Hal in just the last GL issue referenced was Wally's name and not up for grabs. Roy and Hal met through Ollie but were close outside of him.

So I don't think you can confidently 100% say Hal is closer to one over the other. Hal's relationship with both Green Arrow and Flash titles is due to how ungrounded of a character he is and when Green Lantern's are on Earth they have very little in the way of concrete places to be and characters to be With. So if Hal and Carol are on the outs throw Hal at whichever of his friends is still alive.

But DC does push Hal and Barry more frequently and with more casual affection and ease of friendship than they do Hal and Ollie reasons being up for debate.

Since everyone's sharing their Barry Allen fancast I will share mine as well: Andrew Garfield. Like just look at the material. You can't tell me he doesn't have a hot nerdy face. Also, Jensen Ackles would be a fire Hal Jordan. Both characters have a pretty tight friendship in the comics which makes my Supernatural/Spider-Man fan heart throb just like the thing inside my pant—*gunshots*

First impression:

My real first encounter with him was probably as a guest appearance within Green Lanterns, but the first book I read with him was GL/GA. I don't remember too much of what I thought of him there, it was probably more of a general "oh he seems cool I guess" kind of neutral/positive attitude. By the time I read a Hal comic I'd already met Simon, Jess, and Jo so he wasn't a contender for the spot of my favorite lantern. I never fully finished GL/GA though bc I had the book on loan

Impression now:

Mixed. There are some Hal moments I genuinely do love and like, but tbh he can get on my nerves very easily. Of the Earth lanterns he's either my least or next to least favorite (which doesn't mean I don't like him!) but he's also like the "main character" of GL so I get annoyed when I feel like other GLs are being ignored in favor of Hal.

Favorite moment:

With that said there are sooooooo many Hal moments I just love. He's very much a character made by specific moments for me (rather than a general appreciation of who he is overall). Some Swishy fave contenders include his "Avenge me" internal monologue when he fights Mongul in GL (1990) #46, and OFC the Emerald Twilight arc a few issues later. Also in the very first issue of that book, where he jumps off a cliff in front of some campers (waiting until the last moment before using his ring) was an important moment for me in reading Hal, because it was the first time I went "oh! This guy is crazy!"

Idea for a story:

An exploration of the fact that Hal literally killed himself on panel in GL (2011) #19. Because like what the hell, why did this happen and then NO ONE EVER TALKED ABOUT IT. (This is insane to me). I think I'd probably revisit it in a dream sequence, maaaybe doing a rewrite/reimagining of his Knight Terrors issue (which I have NOT read lol) to kind of address that and talk about his mental state and things that had an impact on that, stuff like his parents, the Guardians, PARALLAX. Basically it'd be Hal and the ghost of Tomar-Re just talking about how he is not okay. A pretty heavy response to a pretty heavy topic.

Unpopular opinion:

I'm going to be so real here like 95% of my Hal opinions are unpopular bc its just me talking about how I think he's overrated. Like we're bros ig but still. Overrated.

Like I LIKE him but I'm annoyed at him like 80% of the time bc DC is always putting out a mid story focusing on him while ignoring my faves WHO ARE SO COOL AND DESERVE STORIES 😤💔😭

I guess one beyond that is I'm not a fan of his friendship with Barry. Maybe this is just because I haven't read anything where they're like... interesting? But I just don't get the hype. ESPECIALLY compared to his relationship with Oliver which is absolutely insane in comparison. Like why are we talking abt Barry rn when OLLIE LITERALLY SHOT HAL AND HAL RESSURECTED OLLIE. like guys. Guys. Are you seeing this shit.

Favorite relationship:

Like ship wise? I'm not a huge Halcarol fan personally but I do think they're kind of the epitome of "you're perfect for each other. Never involve anyone else in what you have going on," kind of messy drama-filled relationship with a lot of history.

I also really like halollie and their relationship but not in like a "they should date" way or anything like that. Like they're bros to me who emotionally have a whole complicated little thing going on like idk

Within the lanterns I think the frenemy whatever thing Guy and Hal do is SO funny. I love especially the beginning of GL (1990) where Guy just in his free time shows up to ruin Hal's life while Hal is just so sick and done and mad about it. Peak comedy, Guy never change

Fave headcanon:

Do I have any headcanons about Hal? Not really. I try to think about him as little as possible (kidding). No um I'd say I don't really have any, and if I did they'd probably be really basic or smth like that he cries watching both Top Gun movies.

Who's your favorite character and why?

Oh I wonder who... It's soooo hard to pin down.... Bruce, Larry, Oliver, Dinah, Zatanna, Mia, Damian-

Anyway, there's that Hal Jordan dude. I love characters who won't stay down, who won't give up, even if they're wrong. I love his need to prove himself and his need to fix things. He just wants to prove he can be good, that he can be a hero, that he's not the failure his father thought he was… yeah I like him just fine....

3. Who's your favorite comics hero/sidekick duo?

4. What's your favorite comic book friendship?

THIS IS HARD. I love Hal and Oliver, Dick and Donna, the four corpsmen... but I think my anwser is might be Larry, Rita and Cliff 🥺

19. What do you like about being a comics fan?

Okay, so a lot of comics fans are annoying as hell, and I've never been much of a fandom person (as in I don't engage with fanon or stuff like that), but I do like the sense of community. If you have a question, someone has the answer! Every character has a super fan who will gladly hand you a reading list or some recs, and I think that's really nice :D
