ok so some of the history lesson portion of this may be a little off, it's been a hot minute since i've done much research into this lol. but final haikyuu quest first appeared as a spread in one of the bonus pages in the manga! throughout the manga's run were occasionally drawings of the characters in little fake movie posters, one of them being an action/fantasy movie called final haikyuu quest:

this first poster and the original character designers are drawn by furudate! from there, it went on to become a mini bonus game in the haikyuu 3DS game, which is kind of crazy if you think about it too hard.

there's a playthrough uploaded on youtube here, but it's obv in japanese and i don't think there's been a translation of the game. there's a translation of part of it here on tumblr, but i don't think it's complete. poster from the 3DS game:

from there, it went on to be a CD drama (videos 8-10 on this youtube playlist, with subs), which is super neat. it's also one of the haikyuu light novels, but i have yet to find a full english translation of that.

i haven't read the novel or watched the videos with the CD drama audio myself, so i'm not sure how much it differs from the 3DS game. i assume they're pretty similar though.

so the premise at its most simple is that hinata and his party of adventurers are off to defeat the demon king oikawa and his henchmen! those are the basics.

the "canon" characters in hinata's party are hinata, kenma, aone, iwaizumi, and kageyama. on the opposing side we've got oikawa (the demon king), kuroo, and kiyoko. kiyoko has servants in the form of tanaka and nishionoya (they don't care for oikawa, they're just there for kiyoko). there's also michimiya, who is in the "fair princess kidnapped by oikawa" role that hinata & co. are trying to save. the full character profiles can be found here (everyone in game) and here (heroes only)!

now this whole premise is like. a little silly. the whole deal is a little silly. this is a volleyball manga.

with THAT being said, though, sometimes the most fun to be had is when you take the silly thing and make it devastating. and it's so easy to do that with FHQ. so let's talk abt iwaoi now <3

so in the story, oikawa is the demon king. because the premise is so simplistic and boiled down to good v. bad due to, like, this not being a real piece of media, oikawa is objectively on the "bad side." iwaizumi, on the other hand, is a knight, presumably human, and "oikawa's (former) friend."

iwaizumi being oikawa's former friend is literally his speciality and i think about that all the time btw. for context, kageyama's specialty is "prodigy" and hinata's is "strongest decoy." and fucking iwaizumi is out here like yea hey guys i used to be on the bad side but im mad at oikawa so now i'm with y'all. also my specialty in this fantasy universe is that i used to be oikawa's friend :)

like. what the hell. as you may imagine, the iwaoi angst potential here is ENORMOUS. iwaizumi who has betrayed oikawa and joined the heroes' side to take him down, iwaizumi whose greatest strength comes in knowing oikawa in and out, because the villains you love are both the hardest and the easiest to destroy. iwaizumi who loves oikawa, and who cannot save him.

(**side note, there's a lot of kuroken angst potential involved in this au as well, but let's focus on iwaoi for this post and save kuroken for another day)

so, as i said, the game's interpretation of all this is pretty simplistic and pretty silly. but personally i love thinking too hard and finding depth in things that are so not that deep. and it seems like most fhq fans also employ this as a favorite hobby because holy shit the angst people put in this au is INSANE.

the way i've interpreted it myself has been that iwaoi were besties/lovers/unclear situationship until oikawa kind of "fell into the dark side," because this is an au of every fantasy trope possible, and his reign over aoba became corrupted and "evil." iwaizumi betrays him to join hinata and take him down--save the world, at the cost of the demon he loved so much. but that demon, who oikawa was, is gone already, isn't he?

one of my favorite comics about them is here by @/ichigomaniac, where oikawa falls to the dark side and iwaizumi kills him to save the kingdom he loves. another FAVORITE similar one is here by @/hawberries! the premise of a lot of fics/art in this au run along these lines <3333

another super fun interpretation is a 5 part comic by @/duskisnigh, where oikawa and iwaizumi are running a kind of underground rebellion/safehouse in a world demons are oppressed by the human race. but as oikawa sees more and more evil on the behalf of humanity, he gets more and more unhinged until iwaizumi feels that he no longer knows him--and runs away with kageyama, with the intention of taking oikawa down.

personally i think the BEST aus are where iwaizumi--so loyal, so in love--is forced to leave because he can't stand to watch oikawa fall to more darkness, while oikawa himself is so devoted to iwaizumi that it's his love for iwaizumi that is corrupting him.....

in the fic i wrote, it's a story about forbidden love and how oikawa just wants to be allowed to love iwaizumi and he'll fight a war in order to do it. but iwaizumi can't watch oikawa fight this war anymore, because he's getting more and more dark as the war rages on. so he leaves, and was any of this ever worth it?

Captain Squad Petition: idk if you’re a Digimon fan but I am, and I’ve thought abt Haikyuu characters as digidestined for ages now. Anyway, Captain Squad goes on a wilderness trip and gets zapped into the digital world, hijinks and angst ensue.

I feel like Daichi would partner with Terriermon, Daichi’s no nonsense attitude clashing with Terriermon’s easygoing nature. Also regarding if or if not Crests are getting involved in this, Daichi as the Crest of RELIABILITY?! Chefs kiss, that fits him to an italicized T.

Dracmon was MADE for Kuroo they vibe very well. Oikawa I see with a plant based mon like Palmon (Crest of Knowledge go brrrr). If Kita’s involved, I can see Tentomon or Gomamon. The former more than the latter cause Tentomon literally has a Kansai accent in the sub. I have a few ideas for what Bokuto or Ushijima would have, probably your more contemporary creatures like Agumon, Patamon, Gabumon. I could also see an Agumon look alike like Dorumon.

Haven’t thought of much in terms of plot, could follow any of the anime or game plots, could be its own plot. I just love imagining the captains having to deal with superpowered creatures (that may give them superpowers, depending on the continuity) and having said creatures change as symbolism for their characters and how they may develop. Digimon’s cool like that, the Digimon change as a physical representation of the characters growing and developing (honestly that’s one of my favorite parts about that franchise)

く -- they do prank wars every other month. the one with the most points right now is akaashi, mainly because he’s good at sneaking around and keeping a good poker face. oikawa comes in second, with kenma at third. koganegawa is last, because he doesn’t have the heart to pull truly bad pranks and is terrible at lying. 

じゅう -- iwaizumi is suspicious by the fact that kageyama almost accidentally revealed in a match that oikawa liked being praised when he’s not expecting it and thinks they’re dating. oikawa doesn’t know whether to laugh or cry at that and kageyama thinks it’s fun so he continues to encourage the rumor with offhand statements here and there. 

じゅういち -- yahaba encourages kunimi and kindaichi to make up with kageyama for whatever reason. they don’t know why yahaba presses the topic so much. oikawa just smirks in the background and occasionally encourages it too, but pretends like it’s nothing.

じゅうさん -- atsumu, shirabu, and kenma sneak behind the crowd one day to see karasuno play against some other team at nationals. they find oikawa hidden there too and they watch. they’re almost 100% convinced suga spotted them and pointed them out to kageyama, because kageyama spiked a volleyball extremely aggressively ( earning karasuno a service ace ) and looked oikawa straight in the eye. they never talk about the incident ever, though.

MMM his fashion sense as well YES. Like have you seen those fanarts of Kenma rocking streetwear, yeah he would wear exactly that at the airport or somethin. 

Ofc a huge gamer, he will most likely be seen on his switch backstage, during breaks, on the plane, during vlogs, etc.

Being his manager, Kenma finds you very endearing and he’s always blushing and nervous around you. 

He hides his face behind his switch when he asks something from you awwwh 

He won’t mention you in interviews but when he is asked he will just be like “yeah.. i guess she’s pretty cool” with a light pink dusting his cheeks.

- I can’t imagine it’s easy to perfectly toe the line between “petty and pride-filled” and “prodigious, yet self-loathing”. But, somehow, it’s been done quite well

- Forgive me for using vague terms, but I love the way his voice stays at the back of his throat, but still keeps a breathy quality

- Being able to further disassociate it from Iwaizumi’s voice in the dub was something I didn’t know I needed

- His more serious moments are also done pretty well

But also?? He can sing pretty well too.  His voice is definitely lower than Oikawa’s.  So, probably like a baritone.  Kuroo’s voice adds a really nice mix into the chorus and mixes really well with Oikawa’s.

anyway.  Kuroo also has a really large number of fans because he fits the bad boy aesthetic of the group (both visually and how he presents himself in interviews) and that just has the fans f l o c k i n g

Bokuto helps write the choreography (do you write choreo? idk i can’t dance) sometimes, but sometimes he forgets that he has more experience in dance than the others and will just casually try to add a backflip into the song and the choreographer has to be like, “bokuto- no.”

He’s the most high-energy of the group, so he tends to be a fan-favorite and a host-favorite.  He’s always talking and he goes all out during any variety show games.

Bokuto’s always willing to do extra practice with anyone who wants to meet up before or after their day in the studio.  He understands that some things just don’t come as naturally to other people.

The mash-up you get when his voice mixes with Oikawa’s?? heaven.  It’s so beautiful and I can guarantee that management is using their sheer differences for marketing.  

Oikawa may take the lead for more pop-centric songs, but Ushijima is fronting the darker songs which is just hitting everyone different

He’s another song writer for the group, but he focuses on the actual melodies rather than the lyrics, so he and Oikawa collab on songs a lot.

The fanbase sees him a super hard and scary all of the time and they’re all low-key intimidated??

But then they see him in an interview and they’re all like lol nvm because he’s high-key really kind and polite and will do anything if asked tbh

The host wants him to wear a flower crown?  He’s asking which one.  He’s asked to talk about the process for their newest song, and Ushi will ramble on for a good fifteen minutes about his writing process.

He’s really passionate about his music and everyone can tell, so it leads to a lot of the fans seeing him in a new light and gaining a lot more respect for him as a member.

edit: i forgot to link it for those folks that haven’t read it.

so i don’t even know how i conceived of that specific idea. all i remember is getting that request and thinking “okay switch reader. who gets dommed and who subs.” i also chose specific kinks/actions/positions for everyone so i knew where i wanted to go with things. obviously bokuto was an easy choice, so i went into the fic knowing he was gonna be submissive and that i kinda wanted him and akaashi to have some tension. kuroo just strikes me as a hitting it from the back kind of guy, but not overly dominant. and tsukishima….,we all know how i feel about him.

the set up just kind of….happened? like i was writing and suddenly they were playing volleyball together and i was like “oh ok damn i guess this is what’s happening.” the plan was always to have an open relationship between you and a player, because i’ve always disliked those orgy fics where it just kind of happens? the lead up is interesting so i didn’t want to leave it out. and drinking is a nice way to lower inhibitions, even a little bit, so that worked well.

one thing i don’t like about writing multiple character fics is it’s hard to keep everyone active. all of mine start with everyone lined up against a wall, because that’s how it was in the first multiple character i ever read and now i don’t know what to do besides that. so yeah. everyone just kinda hangs out until it’s their turn.

i also had a hard time figuring out to do with akaashi, because if i’m honest he registers in my head as a gay man and that makes it hard for me to lewd him sometimes (the same applies to sakusa and oikawa. they’re lovely and i find them incredibly attractive but i can just feel that they don’t play for the same team as i do at all.)

one thing i didn’t expect from this fic was tsukishima. i don’t think i considered a tsukishima fucker when i wrote that fic. my first fic ever was a tsukki fic, but that’s because someone asked me to write it as a favor to them. i love writing and i love haikyuu, so i’m basically a personalized fanfic writer for the people in my life if they want that. so i’ve written for him and written for him, but it was when i got to his section in this particular fic that i was like “oh…….oh no i think he’s one of my favorites.” that’s my favorite part of the entire fic. i went in knowing i wanted a little brat taming action with him, but the bit with him ended up so intimate and so enthralling that i genuinely forgot i was writing a larger fic when i finished it. i just knew if i was in that situation i’d have the one i liked the most and then everyone else, and tsukishima just happened to be that person this time.

so yeah, crazy fun to write. a bitch to edit and revise, but it was worth it. i put so much effort into it i’m honestly shocked by it sometimes. i love rereading and i love getting the little notification blurb “your fics are so good! idk if you take requests . . .” because i’m like oh hell yes. someone read my several thousand word long orgy fic. that feels good.

Okay, I’m gonna pause on the requests for a second because I’m lacking brain function. So where does my mind go? To my natural state—Starbucks mode. This post is in no way affiliated with Starbucks Coffee Company, nor am I being paid to promote the brand in any way, shape, or form. Karasuno;

—Daichi, Kiyoko, and Ennoshita are the black coffee drinkers, iced or hot depending on the season.

—Asahi, Tsukki, and Suga are latte drinkers; caramel, toffeenut, and vanilla respectively.

—Tanaka, Yachi, and Yamaguchi are slightly more “adventurous”. They’re the ones who always try the seasonal launches. Yes, they tried the unicorn Frappuccino. Yes, they said it was good. Yes, they were liars.

—Kageyama gets a vanilla bean or strawberry creme Frappuccino every time, without question.

—Hinata and Noya are the chaotic secret menu drinkers. You all saw this coming. Noya totally orders a matcha green tea Frappuccino, sub peppermint, add java chips. Whereas Hinata prefers a vanilla bean with caramel and toffee nut, extra caramel drizzle. On colder days, Hinata prefers a black and white hot chocolate with extra whip and any kind of seasonal topping that adds a crunch.

Aoba Johsai;

—Not to throw my babies under the bus, but the only men on this team drinking black coffee is Iwaizumi, Watari, and Kunimi. Everyone else too weak.

—Never an iced one for Iwa, though. Hot and preferably over 200F like himself.

—Kyoutani doesn’t get anything because he lowkey hates the fact that Starbucks exists. That’s fair. If someone is getting it for him, he prefers a blonde roast with a teensy splash of milk.

—Yahaba also prefers a drip coffee, but he’s very particular. If he’s feeling a hot coffee, he prefers dark unless it’s Italian Roast bc garbage. If that’s the roast of the day, he goes with blonde. Splash of cream and three sugars. If he’s feeling iced coffee, he wants an iced Pike Pour Over because Yahaba is THAT extra. The regular iced coffee doesn’t cut it. However, he only orders it if nobody else is in the cafe and he’s alone.

—Oikawa’s orders depend on his mood. I could see him getting tall Nitros on a regular, but if he’s not feeling coffee, he’s an iced tea drinker. Preferably, the guava white iced tea, unsweetened of course.

—The meme team totally gets the color drinks. Makki is basic af, getting the pink drink. Mattsun prefers to think he’s exotic, getting a dragon drink.

—Kindaichi is the Seijoh Frappuccino offender. He prefers the Caramel Ribbon Crunch.

Nekoma;

—Oddly enough, I don’t see any of them being a straight black coffee drinker. The closest would be Kuroo and Yamamoto. Though, Kuroo would prefer a cold brew. If pumpkin cream cold brew is in season, it’s the only thing he gets.

—Yamamoto, on the other hand, I could see him being a standard iced latte drinker. Extra shot and almond milk.

—Yaku is definitely a flat white kinda guy. He strikes me as the person who thinks he’s cultured for getting ristretto shots.

—Inuoka is a tea drinker, and he doesn’t discriminate between any of them as they’re all good in their own right. However, if he’s feeling ritzy, black tea lemonade with mango refresher base, sweetened.

—Lev is a fan of the very berry hibiscus refresher. If he’s feeling ritzy, he’ll substitute the water for apple juice.

—Kenma is a chai guy, but only iced. With one less pump of chai and two pumps of vanilla, regardless of size.

Fukurodani;

—Washio is our black coffee drinker for this team, because stoic trope.

—Onaga prefers a vanilla sweet cream cold brew, as it’s the perfect balance of creamy, sweet, and still tastes like coffee. If he’s feeling adventurous, he’d vie for an iced cocoa cloud macchiato.

—Akaashi strikes me as another one that orders depending on his mood, never sticking to regularity. Though if he’s unsure, he just orders a white chocolate mocha with no whip. Definitely prefers warm drinks to iced.

—Konoha is in the same boat as Akaashi, but I guarantee he’s tried everything on the menu at least once. Salted caramel mocha is a year round favorite for him, both hot or iced, and whether the topping is available or not.

—You all knew this was coming. Bokuto is our chaotic good friend here. Strawberry creme Frappuccino with a banana blended in, java chips, one scoop vanilla bean powder, and mocha drizzle on top.

—If he’s not feeling a blended drink, he gets an iced matcha latte with one less pump of white mocha and 1-2 pumps of toffee nut. (If you read elixir, you’ve seen this before! This is my actual drink.) Bokuto and I got the crackhead energy here.
