Physostegia virginiana (obedient plant, 'Variegata')

Physostegia virginiana is native to the east coast of North America but there are many hybrids available. This variety is called 'Variegata', and it’s been growing in a pot on our back deck for about five years now. If you take one of its flowers and twist it to one side, it will maintain the new position for several minutes before returning to its original place. Thus it’s common name: the obedient plant.
