While Kalim isn’t a prince, he’s close enough to Scalding Sands royalty that Leona wouldn’t need to worry about Kalim using him for his wealth or status because Kalim has plenty of his own. Plus this little goober is far too genuine to ever do something like that and of course Leona can tell that as well.

Some might think maybe Leona would be jealous of Kalim’s signature spell, but I don’t think he would be. Not if they were introduced as kids and became childhood friends.

Because Kalim is already close to someone whose signature spell most people find scary and dangerous. But he loves and trusts Jamil no matter what - he treats him no differently for his magic. The same would apply to Leona. And for Leona - who has been ostracized and looked down on even before he discovered King’s Roar, but it was made even worse once his signature spell was well known? That kind of acceptance would mean everything.

And as for Kalim’s signature spell… well. Leona is a strategist. He’s highly intelligent. And despite what everyone in the Sunset Savanna seems to think, he does care about his kingdom. Leona isn’t friends with Kalim just for Oasis Maker. He didn’t befriend Kalim just because his spell can easily benefit Leona’s people while simultaneously making Leona look good because Kalim is helping the kingdom because his good friend Leona asked him to. Leona and Kalim’s relationship runs deeper than that. But Leona would be a fool not to accept the help his friend freely offers.

However, since they are friends and Leona genuinely cares for Kalim, Leona does not ask Kalim to use Oasis Maker all that often. During the dry months to help refill reservoirs, rivers, and lakes, but he does not let Kalim be used during times where water is still available. Even if Kalim is willing, Leona refuses to let his friend be considered a commodity in the Sunset Savanna.

Needless to say, Kalim’s family notice this distinction - Leona only asking for/accepting Kalim’s help when his kingdom is low on water and not just because Kalim is freely offering his help for the nth time - and appreciates it. Their opinion of and support for Leona skyrockets.

On Kalim’s end… Leona is showing him just how useful his signature spell is. It’s not just a silly, fun water spell. It can really help people! It can really make a difference! Look how much good he’s already done! He’s helped Leona so much! If anyone outside the Sunset Savanna can understand the importance of water, it would be the people of the Scalding Sands.

Kalim is just so happy to be helping his friend and also helping others. He would love to do more! Are you sure you don’t need more water…? But Leona won’t let Kalim overdo it. He forces him to slow down and think about his actions. “If you add more water you could cause a flood. And it could disrupt the delicate ecosystem - Mother Nature does have its own balance. Besides, I don’t want you to be taken advantage of. You shouldn’t give yourself away so freely, Kalim. You’re worth far more than gold - and you are not replaceable. Don’t just give away everything you have.”

Kalim has never felt more loved and cherished than when Leona reminds him in that exasperated, huffy way of his that he cares more about Kalim that about what Kalim can give Leona. Reminds him if he really wants to do more good, he can donate money to charities or help to fund worthwhile projects. But that should be Kalim’s choice, it is not necessary, and he needs to remember to pace himself. Because not everyone is as generous as Kalim is and he needs to think of gold as water - it always seems to be infinite until the well runs dry. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t help your neighbor if they need some water. It just means you shouldn’t give them far more than they require - just in case they would not offer you the same help in return in your own time of need, should the time ever come.

And besides, if he distributes his golden water wisely, he’d be able to help more people than he was before, people that are more deserving, and more efficiently than he was before too. And if he does it the right way, he’ll still be bringing in more gold so his own supply will never run dry. So he will continue to be able to help people like he wants to do.

Leona opens Kalim’s eyes to how learning how to properly handle his gold and assets and putting them towards the right things by investing and donating them, instead of just throwing it around in an attempt to “help” people, is so much more helpful to people, while also still saying Kalim can of course indulge in a bit of throwing if he so wishes. As long as he paces himself. Because everyone deserves to be helped. And gold is not infinite, just like water. Kalim is still just as giving and helpful and kind as he always is and always will be, but he slowly, under Leona’s and a shocked Jamil’s guidance, learns how to better budget. He becomes just a bit more mindful.

Personality-wise, I mean, we pretty much already know Kalim will get along with basically anyone. He’s just such a ray of sunshine, such a little explosion of energy and joy! Meeting for the first time when they’re older, Leona would obviously not be particularly interested in getting too close to Kalim. But as kids, I feel like Leona would soak up that positivity and warmth - things he didn’t recieve at home. Which, of course, would lead to him growing fond of Kalim’s hyperactivity, even when he is lethargic. And Kalim knows Leona cares for him and is listening, even if it seems like he is napping.

And so you get the last picture by the time they are older and both attending NRC - what seems like a bored, sleepy, possibly grumpy (but actually fondly indulgent) lion listening to his childhood best friend chatter on about something or other as Kalim lays on top of him because both of them adore physical touch.

Their friendship is built on acceptance, kindness, and growth.

I can’t talk about childhood friends Leona and Kalim without mentioning my favorite snake!

When it comes to Jamil, I do think he would try to avoid Leona because of his noble birth at first. But then Leona and Kalim become best friends and Leona is visiting the Scalding Sands more often than not to hang around Kalim (he’d much rather be away from his brother and escape the whispers in the palace). And so Jamil can’t exactly avoid Leona any more than he can avoid Kalim.

Thing is, Leona has proven, in canon no less, that he is much more observant and aware of Jamil’s thoughts and struggles than Kalim is. And while Leona is a noble, he is still the second born. Still the first loser. Still expected to serve under his brother and make Falena look good just because Falena was born first. Still ignored and his ideas for improving the Sunset Savanna and helping its people shot down. Still demeaned and viewed negatively for both his signature spell and the way that he is.

While Jamil is busy spending his energy avoiding interacting with Leona in any meaningful way since he can’t exactly avoid him in actuality, Leona is busy observing Jamil. He notices the way he acts around him, around Kalim, around other servants, the way he acts when he thinks no one is watching… and Kalim is only too happy to answer a few questions about Jamil and the Viper family as a whole.

It doesn’t take long for Leona to confront Jamil and tell him bluntly that he can see right through his harmless mask and sees the snake underneath. But that he doesn’t care - that he can empathize with Jamil. Jamil of course doesn’t believe that and tells Leona so - which, in turn, tells Leona he was right about Jamil hiding plenty behind his masks. Jamil realizes that a split second later with a scowl as Leona smirks.

Leona tells Jamil that he’s sure he can figure out how the two of them are alike if he stops trying to think of Leona like he thinks of Kalim. Jamil is smart - far smarter than he shows - he can figure it out for himself, Leona is sure. And then Leona walks away with that challenge.

And that’s how their friendship would start and how it would progress. Leona and Jamil constantly challenging each other. It starts with mind games, starts with the two of them testing each other, and it grows into a strong bond of friendship from there.

Leona knows he will never completely understand what Jamil has gone through because he is far too privileged. He’s aware of that. But he can hear him out and respect him as a person, treat him as an equal. Try to help lift the burden of caring for Kalim just a bit by giving Jamil a helping hand, by teaching Kalim how to do something on his own instead of him having to rely solely on Jamil for it, distracting Kalim away so Jamil can have his breaks alone for some peace and quiet. Just because he is friends with Kalim does not mean he is blind to his friend’s flaws.

And, of course, Leona would also encourage Jamil to break out of his mask. Tell him his parents were wrong - that his relationship with Kalim is different than their relationship with Kalim’s parents. Jamil can be himself. He can win in games, he can be better at things than Kalim, he can show his true colors a bit more.

And while Leona is poking at the snake, the snake is also poking at the lion. Once Jamil finally accepts that Leona really does not care about the social status difference between them, he lets the sass and biting comments loose. Just… Leona and Jamil bantering and sniping at each other with those sharp-edged, taunting smirks on their faces.

Sometimes, Kalim’s sunny, positive personality can become too much for Leona to handle for a bit. That’s when he immediately seeks out Jamil. There are actually plenty of times he looks for Jamil first rather than Kalim, and each time Leona chooses to look for him first over his master Jamil feels giddy with happiness that he covers with an unimpressed air upon seeing the lion beastman. Leona’s eyes glittering in amusement tell him he’s not fooling anyone though. So, Jamil makes a snide comment about him being a lazy, overgrown pussycat and thus the snark session begins.

Their friendship is built on respect, intellectual challenge, and sass.

Leona wakes up one morning in the al Asim palace (in the room that has long since been designated as his), hearing Kalim’s laughter echoing from down the hallways as he eats breakfast with his family (knowing Kalim saved a seat for him), smelling the food the servants made (knowing that Jamil made a traditional Sunset Savanna dish just for him after asking Leona to bring him new recipes to test his skills), and comes to the sudden realization that…

I feel like every post that focuses on and celebrates the sexuality of transfems hyperfixates on gock and like. I get it, the majority of transfems are either pre-op or non-op, and yeah those people are so frequently excluded from even being allowed to celebrate sexuality and need representation because, hey, especially for the pre-op folks, that reassurance that you're desirable is needed. I should know, I used to be pre-op and I fucking hated it. I didn't get that reassurance when I needed it most, and I'm damned happy that people who do need it can get it now.

But now I'm post-op and like, what? I just get to feel even more excluded from that sort of celebration? It's mostly just all encompassing, like it is nearly the totality of what constitutes celebrating trans bodies, with a teeny tiny exception carved out for transmasc bodies which I am absolutely not qualified to have an opinion on, not even gonna try, and damn near nothing for post-op transfems.

The thing that gets me the most is porn. Sure, it contributes to the feeling of unwelcomeness that nearly every post that gets slapped across my dash is about The Gock, but I don't seek that out. I'm not out here looking for text posts about how cool gock is, I haven't had one for 7 years. But I seek out porn. And any time I see porn that depicts transfems, even when that porn isn't fetishizing transness, the thing that defines a transfem is her dick. Aside from literally one instance, I never see a girl with a scar on her abdomen, I never see a cross section of a pussy with no womb, I never see someone with two holes and an estrogen patch. It just isn't there.

And on one hand, it feels like I don't deserve to complain, that I'm lucky to have even gotten to have surgery, but on the other hand, fuck you! I get to complain about shit like this, I get to complain that the overall atmosphere of transfem sexuality necessarily including gock, I get to complain that this shit makes me feel like surgery was a mistake even though if I take a couple hours off social media and think hard about it, I don't have any real regrets, I get to complain that when transfem bodies are celebrated, that almost never seems to include my transfem body. somebody already mentioned mephistopheles and the importance of faust in wataei but i'd also like to propose (read: propagandize) the other various theatrical symbolism used throughout the narrative to portray wataei's romance in the most colorful and intricate way possible.

first, i'd like to expand on mephistopheles and faust just a tad bit more. in chapter 123 of the ! era main story, when eichi likens wataru to mephistopheles, there's more fear than wonder in his words, but it also sets up his place as the parallel to the demon mephisto — the scholar, faust, also known as god's favorite human — who strives to learn all that can be learned and know all that can be known. let's get a bit more into what mephisto and faust's deal was about: an equivalent exchange.

mephisto proposes that while he will serve him in life, while faust would be in eternal servitude to him upon death. faust sees this deal and agrees, however hesitation weighs in his thoughts as the possibility of ruin hangs in the air. to avoid this, faust opens a wager. if mephistopheles can grant him an experience, a single transcendent moment so inequatably entrancing and enchanting that faust would wish time would stop and the rest of the world be immaterial in the name of that moment — he would offer mephisto, not only his service, but his life, and death, as well as his self entire.

excuse the tangent on century old literature but this is an exact portrayal of what occurs in the most vital moments of sactuary, where eichi also notes that he would wish time would stop, even for only this moment. and as previously mentioned, to break the hypnosis done onto wataru, eichi spoke the words that bound faust to mephisto, that gave his soul onto the devil itself, "ah, still delay! thou art so fair!" — a spell that would prove faust was ready to give his soul and being to mephistopheles entirely. to say this, eichi was taking on the role of faust, someone who was finally completely ready to give his whole self to wataru just as the other had done, for wataru had shown him a fragment of time more beautiful than any he had ever witnessed in his life.

that aside, wataei have more than enough when it comes to theatrical parallels and artistic portrayals throughout the stories, but this can be witnessed more vividly in their two focus events in !! era: Tempest for wataru, and Primavera for eichi.

tempest draws from the shakesperean play the tempest, wherein the main character, prospero, the former duke of milan, who was betrayed and usurped by his brother, summons a storm with the aide of a spirit named ariel. as the storyline progresses, prospero vows that he will set ariel free and abandon his magic, quoting:

I’ll break my staff,

Bury it certain fathoms in the earth,

And deeper than did ever plummet sound

I’ll drown my book.

as depicted in the image, prospero and ariel.

primavera is based on the painting by sandro boticelli, which directly inferences the tale of two celestial beings, zephyrus, god of the west wind (tempest) and chloris, nymph and goddess of spring (primavera). the painting shows chloris being kidnapped by zephyrus, who blooms into flora after their marriage.

i'm sure you've seen the parallel wataei cards repeatedly, but i'd like to note that the names of the cards are "a lively spring storm" for wataru and "a peaceful spring day" for eichi, with skills named "wind that dances among flowers" [花と踊る風] and "night kidnapped by the wind" [風に攫われる夜] respectively. lastly, in the same tempest event story, eichi compares wataru as well as their relationship to a spring storm (hence a mix of eichi's primavera spring and wataru's tempest storm) and notes that being swayed by him is worthwhile.

with that, i conclude my essay on wataru hibiki and eichi tenshouin's relationship, as well as the artistic and theatrical connotations included into their story. a focal point of wataru and eichi is that they have such ways with words that it constantly haunts their relationship, with eichi sometimes claiming he has never known love and wataru likening their relationship to a dazzling performance. however, it also inspires events like these, that prove there is more than one way to declare such love, from faust offering his soul to mephisto to prospero setting ariel free, as well as chloris blooming into flora because of zephyrus — wataei has long since been about how wonderfully intertwined a love can be among the spring and storm of life.
