See, I think the reason they chose the pink one was because the directors already KNEW the movie goers would be fanning themselves every time he showed up on screen; plus they didn't want him to outshine the main character, who is also rather good looking in my opinion, so they told the costume designer that instead of putting him in a sort of pale blue or dove grey or even crisp white kimono, or the brown one like he would later wear in Shogun that makes him look like a Jedi Master, to instead, put him in a pink floral one to minimize the casualties.
Because I know for a fact, that I'd have never been able to finish the movie otherwise because I'd have to keep pausing it every five seconds like I did with The Last Samurai because HEEEEEECK!

Also, here is my contribution to the long hair appreciation post.

Hiroyuki Sanada's long hair appreciation post
(From The Last Samurai no. 1 and 2; Helix no. 3; The Promise no. 4)
That pink silk robe and the moustache must have been an attempt of the costume department of The Promise to actively undermine his sexiness because there's no other explanation for that hideous thing 😂

You know stuff's about to go down when the character played by Hiroyuki Sanada shows up for the finale with messy hair and a half-smile

(and very little sanity left in the case of the latter two)

💮 onmyōji (2023) review 💮
it took me longer than expected to finish this highly-anticipated adaptation, but boy am i glad i completed it!
first up, i just wanna say i have only read a few chapters of the stories by yumemakura baku, and and only seen snippets of the 2001 movie. i've not seen the sequel, nor the chinese adaptations (and certainly not played the games). that said, i am very familiar with onmyodo and its place and significance in japanese history and culture, since there are overlaps between it and taoism, buddhism, and east asian divination in general.
with that in mind, i was pleasantly surprised at how the anime eased viewers into the philosophies behind onmyodo, particularly with the concept of curses, the birth of demons, and rituals; everything was explained very clearly, with hiromasa as a stand-in for the audience, although i did wish that the show dwelled more on the supernatural aspects during the first few episodic arcs.
likewise, i enjoyed the relationship between seimei and hiromasa; and here is where the stans could fill me in, because i was very certain that the 2001 movies weren't as fruity as the anime. but still, the message was received, and i was very pleased with how their relationship was depicted – hiromasa being soft and very attuned with his emotions was a very heian gentlemanly trait to have, so it didn't feel out of place at all.
personally, i think the final arc could have explored more of hiromasa's death on seimei, but i think that short scene (barely a few seconds!) of seimei cradling hiromasa's sword was molto bene.
in terms of animation, i found it satisfactory; clearly a higher budget would have done the special effects more justice, but given that the onmyoji were more priests and academicians than jujutsu kaisen sorcerers, the relatively modest show of their abilities made sense. i will say, there were key frames in episode 4, especially with certain profiles and oblique angles, that looked rough.
the final three episode were beautifully animated though! and i adored the ending theme and animation!
also, this is just me being a mardy bum, but i think this would've worked better as a spring/summer anime than a fall/winter one, given the gorgeous floral motifs (although the cold seasons have always evoked intense fujo feels inside of me haha).
in all, as with ooku: the inner chambers, which aired a few months ago, i will not be object to a second season of this show – namikawa daisuke and asanuma shintaro did splendidly as seimei and hiromasa, and i would certainly love to see the other stories animated!

onmyoji related media you can watch (that has english subs)
Behold, my Onmyoji film/TV collection for curious people who've already seen the anime!
The Yin-Yang Master (2001) and it's 2003 sequel The real OGs, the one most people know from Yuzuru Hanyu's SEIMEI free skate routine. Featuring Nomura Mansai as Seimei and Hideaki Itou as Hiromasa, these movies were my introduction to the Onmyoji series as a whole. The soundtrack is a banger, the practical effects are great and you get to see Hiroyuki Sanada ham it up in the first movie! I would say that the first movie is a lot stronger, but the second movie makes up for it by being A Lot Gayer. It even has an English dub! It's easily found on Certain streaming websites or on DVD.
Tumblr media
晴雅集 - Qing Ya Ji, aka The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity A Chinese adaptation that REALLY puts its own spin on things; Qingming and Boya are Seimei and Hiromasa respectively, but it's not easy to tell if you aren't already aware of the source material! It's a different take that I love regardless, with beautiful visuals, incredible costuming and impressive sets. It also made me cry like a baby at one point, which is always a plus. It's on Netflix and it also has an English dub.
Tumblr media
Onmyoji - Takiyashahime (2020) A TV Asahi drama special that adapts the two-part Takiyashahime novels. It's not 1-1 of course, but it does follow the main plot points well enough (it also adapts Tsuyuko's story as a bonus!) It's got that "yeah this was done on a TV drama budget and not a movie one" look when it comes to the effects, but that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. You really get a glimpse at novel Seimei and Hiromasa's dynamic in this (they include one of my favourite hirosei exchanges in this and it's SO GOOD) as well as proper Nasty Old Man Ashiya Doman!!! You can watch it on Certain streaming sites.
Tumblr media
There also exists a 2015 TV Asahi drama series, but I haven't been able to find it. An earlier 2001 NHK drama series exists as well, but it isn't subbed in English. It is, at the very least, entirely on YouTube! 10 episodes, 45 minutes each. It's a little...weird, I won't lie (they try to make Hiromasa and Mitsumushi a thing which is. Why) but some of the stories are genuinely heartwrenching, which was a surprise to me when I watched it!

No idea what's going on but... Ahhhh maaahhhh gaaaawd, that exquisite, beautiful mess of hair, what I'd do to it, and with it, and with its owner while at it!
(Yeah, my utter, incurable weakness for amazing long hair on amazing men is showing again. Nothing to be concerned about, move along)

Some coincidence of Seimei.
If you don't like sad content, please DON'T read this post.
Yuzuru did the spell-casting gesture to Javier at PyeongChang Olympics, just like Seimei did to his best friend Hiromasa in Onmyoji movie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Yuzuru decided to skate Seimei, he probably didn't expect that the epic scene of Seimei crying for Hiromasa in the Onmyoji plot would be repeated on him in front of the world.
Tumblr media
Javier's expression showed that he didn't understand what Yuzuru was doing (laughs). However, Yuzuru turns around and does this only after confirming that the camera is filming. For his program, Yuzuru must watch Onmyoji movie many times and understand what this means.
In the plot, Seimei shaked Hiromasa, "I can't bear to lose you, don't leave me. " Hiromasa replied weakly, "I never thought you would ever shed tears."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What Seimei's spell means?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the movie, a man dumped a woman, the woman jumped into river. That man is haunted by the ghost of the woman. The woman's resentment became a snake and want hurt that man.
Hiromasa cannot see the ghost and doesn't understand this, Seimei casts a spell on his eyes so that Hiromasa can see the ghost who had love and resentment on that man.
Seimei told Hiromasa, "Feeling bitter towards people is a form of spell." The embodiment of the spell became a snake.
Tumblr media
Full movie with English subtitles:
Full list from 2011 to present
So, in my delusional mind, it is destined that Javier make Yuzuru who still wear kariginu cry there, Seimei program will complete.

Shonen Onmyoji Manga
There is a new Shonen Onmyoji Manga on Comic-Walker by Sorakura Shikiji and Itou Natsuo.
It is based on the light novel with the same name written by Mitsuru Yuuki and illustrated by Sakura Asagi that was first released in 2001. This is not to be confused with the other Shonen Onmyoji Manga written by Hinako Seta in 2005. There was an anime series that aired from October 3, 2006 to March 13, 2007.
Here is a translation of the synopsis:
Times are peaceful. 13-year-old Masahiro is the grandson of the rare Onmyoji, Abe no Seimei. In order to surpass his grandfather, Masahiro, who is still half a man, spends his days training hard while being teased by his partner, the mononoke Mokkun. In the midst of this, there is a commotion that the Imperial Palace is on fire, and Masahiro and Mokkun start their own investigation, but there is a strange shadow lurking behind the scenes... Can the poor Onmyoji save the capital!?
Masahiro is the son of Seimei's son, Abe no Yoshimasa [1] and Mokkun is also called Guren but his real name is Toda, which is the Japanese's name for Tengshe (騰蛇) from Chinese Mythology [2]. I also think the Chinese Equivalent to a mononoke (物の怪) is a wuguai (物怪). Anyway, Masahiro also has a love interest named Fujiwara no Akiko.
[1] More information of Abe no Yoshimasa can be found on this page.
[2] More information about Tengshe can be found on this page.
More information on Shonen Onmyoji in general can be found on this page.
Here is a link to the character list:
Note that chapter 4 is places there temporarily and will be taken down on 06/01/2023
