I beg every single one of you who enjoys Fangs of Fortune right now (and hasn't done so yet) to watch The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity on Netflix as well.
It's from the same director and shares the aesthetics, some of the actors (as usual), the heartbreak and aaaall of the queer subtext (and then some) – except it's a two-hour movie.
It's also a kind of spiritual predecessor to Fangs of Fortune with the whole demons among humans theme.
So anyway, you will not regret this, I promise.

“You desire death that badly?” “It has to be by your hand.”
I’m barely through episode 2. Leave it to GJM to give us that t e n s i o n.
Bromance and a cute het romance all at once?? Giving implications that they all have history together????
anyways go watch Fangs of Fortune.

onmyoji related media you can watch (that has english subs)
Behold, my Onmyoji film/TV collection for curious people who've already seen the anime!
The Yin-Yang Master (2001) and it's 2003 sequel The real OGs, the one most people know from Yuzuru Hanyu's SEIMEI free skate routine. Featuring Nomura Mansai as Seimei and Hideaki Itou as Hiromasa, these movies were my introduction to the Onmyoji series as a whole. The soundtrack is a banger, the practical effects are great and you get to see Hiroyuki Sanada ham it up in the first movie! I would say that the first movie is a lot stronger, but the second movie makes up for it by being A Lot Gayer. It even has an English dub! It's easily found on Certain streaming websites or on DVD.
Tumblr media
晴雅集 - Qing Ya Ji, aka The Yin-Yang Master: Dream of Eternity A Chinese adaptation that REALLY puts its own spin on things; Qingming and Boya are Seimei and Hiromasa respectively, but it's not easy to tell if you aren't already aware of the source material! It's a different take that I love regardless, with beautiful visuals, incredible costuming and impressive sets. It also made me cry like a baby at one point, which is always a plus. It's on Netflix and it also has an English dub.
Tumblr media
Onmyoji - Takiyashahime (2020) A TV Asahi drama special that adapts the two-part Takiyashahime novels. It's not 1-1 of course, but it does follow the main plot points well enough (it also adapts Tsuyuko's story as a bonus!) It's got that "yeah this was done on a TV drama budget and not a movie one" look when it comes to the effects, but that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. You really get a glimpse at novel Seimei and Hiromasa's dynamic in this (they include one of my favourite hirosei exchanges in this and it's SO GOOD) as well as proper Nasty Old Man Ashiya Doman!!! You can watch it on Certain streaming sites.
Tumblr media
There also exists a 2015 TV Asahi drama series, but I haven't been able to find it. An earlier 2001 NHK drama series exists as well, but it isn't subbed in English. It is, at the very least, entirely on YouTube! 10 episodes, 45 minutes each. It's a little...weird, I won't lie (they try to make Hiromasa and Mitsumushi a thing which is. Why) but some of the stories are genuinely heartwrenching, which was a surprise to me when I watched it!

This is a crossover of MYY and Kamisama Hajimemashita!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fate of the spirits of the temple of the Crimson Bird is hard. Despite the maintained comfort and cleanliness, very few believers visit the temple. Some kind of painful, inhuman despair hung in the air around him, because there had been no god in this temple for many years.
The only guardian of the temple and the temple spirits worry day after day about maintaining order and record the prayers of every rare visitor in the hope that when their god returns, he will be able to read them.
No one knows exactly what happened, it's just that one day Zhongxing went somewhere: he said goodbye and never came back. He bound Qingming with the shackles of a guardian and left him here to rot all alone. Again. After so many years that he served beside him. After the incident when Zhongxing saved him as a little fox. Zhongxing became much more to Qingming than god or his master - he was like a father to him.
One night, creaking footsteps rang out in the silence of the temple, and the presence of the fire god filled the temple with warmth and melted all the resentment in Qingming's heart in an instant. He's back! He didn't leave a promise for nothing. He was a little late, but that's not the main thing, because HE's with them again. He didn't abandon Qingming.
The fox ran barefoot to the entrance hall of the temple, not even bothering to put on shoes or prepare the words with which he would scold the negligent god who had left them and his own temple a long time ago.
When the last door remained between them, Qingming forcefully pushed it to the side, freezing in the passage - in the hallway, politely bowing to the amazed temple spirits, stood a human youth.
The man raised his head and turned to Qingming, his hand immediately darted to the sword behind his back.
"Fox! There is a demonic fox in your temple!"
The mark of the fire god burned on his forehead.

still wild about that scene in qingyaji where qingming gets all pouty like, ‘boya, won’t you believe ME, your undeniable three-day imperial-rite crush, RATHER THAN YOUR CHILDHOOD FRIEND the princess?’ like whoa qingming babe isn’t that a bit too eager now

Hey there! i just wanted to message and say I watched a movie after seeing you reblog it: The Yin Yang Master: Dreams of Eternity, and I really enjoyed it! It was a great watch, and so action packed! Loved Mingqing and Boya's bond too!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! It's really such a stunning movie and the story is so enchanting. Really one of the prettiest movies I've ever seen in my life. We were supposed to get a sequel...but some things happened so I don't think that's happening anymore.

Watching My Journey to You really made me wanna rewatch Qing Ya Ji, they reused some sets, few same actors, used the same hair and costume styling, even the fighting style, they’re all very Guo Jingming lol
Also, a friend once asked me the difference between Boya and Hiromasa, plus between Qingming and Seimei
Should definitely ask her to watch My Journey to You, then tell her that Gong Shangjue is basically Boya and Gong Ziyu is Hiromasa
Meanwhile, Qingming is kinda like a combination of the Wufeng girls, and Seimei is more like Xue Tongzi
