I’m so glad Domi brought this up bc one of Noe’s main character flaws is his recklessness. His straightforward thinking can cause him to have tunnel vision and completely forget his own self. Bc of that some ppl have mischaracterized him as having little intelligence.
But we see that clearly isn’t the case, Noé can think on his feet, observe, and learn from his environment quickly. Noé is very emotionally intelligent otherwise how would he deal with Vanitas on a constant basis? How would he comfort and assure Domi, befriend Roland, inspire Jean-Jacques? But while his reckless nature can be endearing at times, it’s also very concerning. There are several things Noé has done that, from a certain angle, looks kinda crazy. And to me, this all boils down to the fact that Noé does not consider himself in the equation. Him seeing himself as strong or unkillable isn’t from pride or naivety, it’s complete lack of awareness towards himself.
Because Noé doesn’t see himself as a person.
And when you follow that thread, a lot makes sense. His fear of being an Archiviste, the disgust he had when there’s some relief that Louis didn’t kill him, being kidnapped and treated like an object for who knows how long. Teacher calling him “mon chaton” and raising Noé like a fucking pet. Not telling people of his past. And this is what we know of. Noe acts like he doesn’t have an identity, he exists for others, for memories, as a weapon, as a “saviour”. Noé hasn’t realized that he is a person whose feelings are valid, who isn’t a machine and can die or fail, his life matters just as much as the people he cares about.

i had to call him sensei!- chp17
That monster attacked us to swallow other small monsters, what is this!? I could do nothing but avoid his attacks. As for the hunters, they tried to injure him, but he was not affected by their attacks. As for Vanitas, he was lost since the doctor escaped with Spider-Man! I don't know why, but I heard the doctor saying something to Vanitas before he left… While he was exhausted, Noé tried to save him from the monster's attacks, and then Noé shouted at Vanitas that he would abandon him and face the monster alone… They quarreled again, so Vanitas gathered his strength and stood up. Besides Noi, sometimes they look like a cat and a mouse but I feel like Vanitas is the cat 🐱 and Noi is the mouse 🐀. While we were facing the monster, I told Vanitas that I had one bomb that I could use once, so he must take advantage of the opportunity and carry out his mission of purifying the curse-bearer using that book. So we made a plan for the hunters to attack the monster and distract it, and I would blow up the ceiling on it using The bomb temporarily obstructs his movement, and then Noe will fly in Vanitas to do his part! And so we worked as a team and the mission was successful! Vanitas saved the curse-bearer and he returned to his human form when he was a child!!!
Waaah! Miraculously we succeeded! What awesome teamwork! And there lay Noe and Vanitas laughing, how could they laugh now! But I also feel like laughing! I laughed too! but…
How cruel people are! Even children are not spared from the greed of evil people! (me)
You're right I was wrong in the past! I thought that vampires were the evil and scourge in this world and must be eliminated! But today I discovered that sometimes humans are selfish and evil creatures, and that vampires are creatures like us that also deserve to live, and that they are also subjected to injustice! (The Hunter with the Light Bomb)
How long have you been with us!?
Good! Noe cleared up my misunderstanding! My name is Roland and you?
Call me Diane.
And so they all went their separate ways, informing the hunters about Doctor Moreau's laboratory, and taking Vanitas and Noi, the curse-bearer, to Mr. Orlok and presenting him with the report. As for me, I returned to the laboratory and the inventor was still asleep all this time. I was looking at the inventor and comparing him to that evil doctor. They share the characteristic of research and experimentation, but their principles are different and the ways they influence society are different. I hope that there are many people like the inventor. I don't know what's up with that alchemist, but I want to tell him the details of that solution that I saw with that bald villain. I never imagined that one day I would meet one of the crazy inventors that I see in American superhero stories, I wonder! Is all this still a dream? I do not think so!
I treated my injuries and went to bed to rest, but the events I experienced today were a little confusing, especially when that Spider-Man appeared and took the doctor with him. Did Lord Ruthven have anything to do with this matter? Does it have anything to do with the doctor's evil research? Did they take my weapon to use it for their evil plans? I wonder if this will be the last time our laboratory is attacked by them?
Many questions I couldn't find answers to! So I decided to go to Vanitas and Noy Ghada to inquire a little about that doctor's case and who was behind him!

I am unfortunately unfamiliar with Woe.Begone, so I can't compare Vanitas and Mike the way I'd like to, but I think I can make a compelling argument that Vanitas deserves to win no matter who he's up against. It is fundamentally almost impossible to be more doomed than Death is Inevitable, the dying main character of Death is Inevitable, the manga.
Vanitas is one of two main characters in The Case Study of Vanitas (VnC), and the other main character is the one that's telling/narrating the story. This is because the entire manga is a memoir written by the narrator after Vanitas's death. VnC is the story of their whole relationship, from meeting to murder, and the very first chapter ends with the declaration that, at the end of the story, the narrator is going to kill Vanitas with his own two hands.
The Case Study of Vanitas exists as a book within its own universe. The book is being written over the course of the manga's run. And that book only exists because Vanitas dies. The narrative fundamentally would not exist if there were any chance of his survival.
Like I said, VnC at its core is the story of the main characters' relationship. Over its run, they've grown closer and closer, and the narrator has fostered a fair amount of positive growth in Vanitas. He's less wretched and miserable than he used to be. He's capable of a trusting relationship. Furthermore, the narrator is obsessed with the idea of saving him. One of the series's most central recurring images is the narrator desperately reaching out for Vanitas's hand, trying to save him from falling. And the central tragedy of the manga is that, because of that first chapter, because of narration from a future Noé in mourning, we know that it's never going to work.
In-universe, the narrative exists because Vanitas is doomed. It's a posthumous memoir. And on a meta level, regarding VnC as a manga in our real world, Vanitas's inevitable death is the thematic core of the entire series.
"Vanitas" is a latin word that means vanity, emptiness, or futility. It's a reference to a famous biblical quote that evokes the meaninglessness of all earthly life in the face of death, "Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas." And, in the same vein, it's a reference to the Vanitas art movement.
Vanitas paintings, like the quote above, are meant to remind the viewer that earthly pleasures are vain and futile in the face of death. Death is inescapable, say the paintings, and it renders all else hollow and meaningless with its inescapability.
VnC is a piece of Vanitas art. The title, "The Case Study of Vanitas," refers to a psychological study of Vanitas as a character, but it also refers to a study of a case of "Vanitas" as a theme. It's A Case Study of How Death is Inescapable and Renders All Else Meaningless. And I've already laid out exactly how.
The narrator wants to save Vanitas, and we know he can't. Vanitas heals and grows and experiences all manner of earthly pleasures, and death will come for him anyway, because none of that matters in the face of inescapable demise. That is the thematic core of VnC.
Vanitas's most iconic, ever-present accessory is an hourglass in which the sand has already run out. The cover of the first volume of the series is Vanitas sitting inside a picture frame covered in images from Vanitas paintings, posed like he himself is a living piece of Vanitas art. On all levels but physical he is already dead.
Vanitas is a walking, talking reminder of the inevitability of death. The entire point of the manga is that his death is inescapable, and there is absolutely nothing that anyone can do about it. He is the core of the narrator's memoir, written in the wake of his demise, and he is the titular dead man in a manga obsessed with his passing.
It's less that Vanitas is doomed by the narrative and more that Vanitas's doom is VnC's narrative. There's no memoir without his death. There's no case of "vanitas" to study without his death. The beating heart of the entire series is that this man is going to die, and absolutely nothing can ever change that.

@naehja your comment is brilliant too. Also OP observation bc theres a really interesting character arc that's been building for Roland out of all this.
1. Meeting Olivier as a kid, becoming friends despite the enormous social differences. Apparently Roland was a street kid? (we know he has siblings, for whom he's likely the main provider) - > Becoming a chasseur, for money maybe, but also bc I bet that's where Olivier was going too. Along the way Roland is (becomes?) compassionate and very self-assured on what to do, which is save the good people from the vamps.
2. Meeting Astolfo, as an older teenager, early 20? I think he's not yet a paladin? He opperates with Olivier so I bet he's still second, or just about. - > Fail to reach Astolfo, bc A mentality and trauma is just too much and Roland doesn't know how to make him see that he's not unforgivable and people deserve to live even if they've been deceived by vamps. Specially children. (oh do I understand Roland horror. He really couldn't see the way and I don't fault him) - > Develop a sort of savior complex and more unstable behaviour re: those that he can/must save. As seen in Catacombs arc.
3. Meeting Noé and Vanitas part1. - > there he realises there are good Vampires! That Vanitas the human is collaborating with one, that Noé preferred talking to fighting and they're both curing those that were deemed too far gone! They're saving those that seemed beyond saving! Even if they're vamps! They expose Dr. Moreau and with him the corruption that is still inside the church and the chasseur. His world is shocked!!! (just realised that's the same reasoning that caused noé to follow vanitas so intently, wow.)
4. He meets vanitas in Paris and realises how much this other young man hates himself. Meets him and Noé again in Geuvadan and works with them and watches them perform another miracle, plus he has to witness Astolfo having another breakdown. - > ??? I think we still have to see how all this shakes out but I imagine Roland has to be feeling a lot and thinking what all of this means.
Anyways, yeah, I think we're being feed bit by bit Roland character arc, which will be important in the future. So we can see the way events change him. And Astolfo paper in his life plus his meeting of Noé and Vanitas are vital to the story.
about midway through vnc 59 i realized that the version of roland we’ve been seeing in this flashback seems much more stable than the version that first met Vanitas and now i am losing my mind; this whole time i was asking myself what Roland’s impact on Astolfo was when i should’ve been asking about Astolfo’s impact on Roland

I don’t know if you do request but Vanitas/Noé cockwarming their s/o
my requests are closed but vanitas crumbs so
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
vanitas let’s you cockwarm him as a form of torture— a punishment you don’t even deserve. it’s not that it’s not a trial for himself either, a true test of his patience one might say...but seeing you squirm in his lap, eyes wide and pupils dilated just as crystalline tears start to pricelessly decorate your waterline and having you paw at him for some kind of movement— any kind of friction— is one of vanitas’ most prized possessions.
knowing that vanitas— he, a mere mortal can bring someone like you to the brink of desperation and drive you to beg for the rut of his cock deep inside your velvet walls, is a power he’s so proud to yield. that blue eyed devil has absolutely no mercy and no trouble keeping you situated on his dick while he works or relaxes, resisting you when you hump him with need by stilling your hips or pinching your inner thighs. “behave, my darling, or you’ll only make this game of punishment that little bit worse.” it’s almost sick and twisted the way he enjoys it so much, laughing when you gasp tearily every time he thrusts upwards to surprise you, jolting your entire body at the slight tingle of pleasure, while he enjoys getting his dick wet.
noé my sweetest boy, is so gentle when it comes to cockwarming. it’s just another form of intimacy for him, a way for him to keep you close. with your bare skin touching one another, the vampire will hike your thigh over his, slide his wet dick into you with ease and slowly as though not to hurt you. he yearns for the little shudder that takes over your body and the whimper you let out that feeds his inner romantic soul whenever your bodies connect. noe needs you like this, in the same way that he needs air and uses his gentle touch to brush up and down your back when you feel overwhelmed.
i feel like noé would give in too easily, feeling himself twitch buried deep inside you— eyes full of fondness as he lays you back with lips on yours as you ruin the world for him and tempt him to move. he wouldn’t want you to feel used in that sense, constantly breathing out his affections against your hot mouths while he slowly pulls his cock out of you and thrusts it back in. “i love you, without a doubt, i love you.” he says over and over, just to make sure you know.

Noé Archiviste x Reader (selfship)
Tumblr media
Order made for LeeJiiYoung on Wattpad with a special wish for a mature realtionship with a bit of engagement.
Friendly reminder that English is not my first languge. You can check my Masterlists both in English and Polish here.
▹ You met Noé when one of the cursed vampires attacked you. The man saved your life. He asked where he could find you to see how you would be in a few days. You loved flowers since you were a child, so you gave him the address of your flower shop.
▹ He showed up a few days later, apologizing for not being able to come earlier. You gave him a big bouquet of flowers as a thank you. He turned very red and at first refused to accept them.
▹ Later he started coming under the pretext of buying plants. Your three younger brothers were very interested in him. He enjoyed playing with them.
▹ Archiviste was fascinated by Paris. You offered to show him around. At one point, you helped the old lady avoid falling under the carriage. He was terribly worried if you were okay. Then he realized how much he liked you.
▹ He absolutely defends you from everything. That's his instinct. He has lost a friend once and is afraid of a repeat.
One of the men on the street started accosting you because you're hanging out with a vampire. You started defending Noé and ended up being pushed into the fountain. He grabbed the guy by the collar and tried to beat him up. Though, the sight of you, wet because of the water, stopped him. He took you in his arms and carried you to the flower shop. There he wrapped up in your favourite blanket and made tea. He was apologizing all evening. You didn't know how to silence him, so you placed a kiss on his lips. He was on cloud nine. You've been a couple ever since.
▹ Archiviste can read memories while drinking others blood. Since you are human, he did not dare to propose this to you. It was you who gave him that offer. He hesitated but followed your will. Thanks to this, he understands you perfectly.
▹ He left a mark on you. Dominique noticed this. You know perfectly well that she is in love with him. She once warned you to treat Noé as good as he deserves. She won't get in a way of your relationship for the sake of her friend. She wants him to be happy. This does not mean, however, that you will become good friends. You tolerate each other and that's it.
▹ Noé is not very original when it comes to gifts. He gives you books. Sometimes also jewelry. It’s often from the vampire world because you won't find one like that in the human world.
You recently got a decorative clasp for your long hair.
▹ If you want to cheer him up, bake an apple pie. He loves its taste. His eyes almost shine when he sees it.
▹ The man is happy to take you out for walks. You paint the landscapes of Paris. Sometimes also portraits of your loved one.
You go out at night very often. You like the moon and the stars so this is a perfect time.
▹ Because you like fauna and flora, he took you to the hothouse. You saw many species of plants. Beautiful, colourful birds and butterflies flew around. Still, Archiviste looked at you all the time. When you brought it to his attention, he said you were the most beautiful sight in his life.
▹ Noé has been thinking a lot about life lately. He just bought an engagement ring. Vanitas graciously agreed to help him make choice.
He prepared a romantic meal on one of the tallest clock towers. He's going to take you there with his powers. The man suspects you wouldn't want him to offer you an engagement in front of strangers. He even wrote a speech and hid it in a small, white pocket. Archiviste is excited and nervous at the same time. He sincerely hopes for your consent.

What I hope most from vanoe is the possibility of vanitas gaining a better self esteem through the relationship…. Like. please vanitas love yourself a little. It genuinely hurts me how much he despises himself (I feel you noé. I do)
ok but like really truly. this so much for real.
vanitas' self-loathing hurts so much, dude. he is literally so worthy of all the love in the world, & he deserves to be able to acknowledge that, dammit.
but, at least we know that such an aspect is like. canon. like. noe has no tolerance for the lowly way vanitas sees himself, and i wanna cheer every time he scolds him for being so dismissive of his own wellbeing. he'll love him with all his soul, and he'll teach vanitas to love himself just as much.

Little Domi and Noé fic @phmonth2021's vnc countdown day 7: the de Sades. And also this prompt over on my ph & vnc blog!
*Aggressively spams the Domi needs appreciation button*
Noé’s brow was creased, his hand to his chin,
“If you keep thinking that hard, your thoughts might decide to start walking out of your head.”
“Sorry, Teacher.”
“No need to apologize,” his teacher laughed, more than anything at Noés mundane reaction at such a strange statement, “I just thought your head might appreciate a little relief. Come now, let’s look at the options over here!“ He beckoned him to the next part of the store. “What do you think?”
Noé observed the dresses towering above him, trying not to think too hard this time. He didn’t want to say he didn’t like them till he gave them a proper think over.
Then he turned to the side…and saw it.
A dress of brilliant gold, with flowers, butterflies and bows—though nothing too terribly lavish, just perfect little accents.
Noé’s eyes became stars, and his hands became triumphant fists at his sides.
“That one.” He pointed like an explorer who’d found land.
His Teacher raised an eyebrow, lifting his head to find the object of fascination. “Ah! You have taste, my dear Noé! A fine piece!”—He called for assistance—“Our dear Dominique will look lovely in that.”
He agreed. Even with her hair like that, and her eyes all sad, she would look beautiful in this. He could only hope she would be able to see it too.
*
Noé sat in a chair in Dominique’s room, swinging his legs back and forth, waiting patiently, but determinedly.
Domi came in what might have been minutes, but felt like hours later. It still made him sad to see her hair so short, and her eyes ever glazed. Gold looked better when it was allowed to shine.
She was still wearing Louis’ waistcoat.
Noé shot up at her arrival and Domi’s eyes widened upon seeing him there.
“I have—!" He fumbled with the box, almost dropping it, but managed to regain composure, holding it out to her. “I have something for you!”
Domi didn’t say anything. The curiosity in her eyes was almost imperceptible beneath that glaze, but it was there. She took the lid off the box and observed the article within. Her eyes widened, and she looked from it to Noé.
“Domi, would you please join me for dinner tonight?”
“Huh? We always have dinner together.” Her voice was low and soft.
He smiled, though there was something sad in his eyes at hearing her voice. “Yes, but tonight’s special! I know this request might seem a little strange, but I would like you to meet me in the woods later!” He pulled a badly drawn map of the forest out of his pocket and pointed at an over-exaggerated X on it. “At this location!” He looked up at her, and the look in his eyes told her she couldn’t refuse. “Will you?”
Domi’s brow furrowed. “You haven’t lost it have you, Noé?”
“Please let me know if I have! Teacher says if I think too hard my thoughts might walk right out of my head!”
“He was just saying that.”
“We can only hope, but I still don’t want to chance it.”
*
Domi’s thoughts frayed as she looked at herself in that golden dress. Like a rope that isn’t quite sure it can hold onto anything.
It was Louis. It was supposed to be Louis.
Why did they pick her? Why? Why was he cursed, and she blessed? It wasn’t fair. It wasn’t fair they had to choose. Choices were for ice cream flavors, and what book you wanted to read, not for brothers and sisters.
Not for twins.
That word gummed up her mouth, even when she didn’t say it aloud.
Twins. She and Louis, twins. Part of her still couldn’t believe it, and the other part of her could only believe it.
That word had one benefit. With her hair cut, and wearing his clothes, she could pass for him.
Which was surely what everyone wanted. All as it should have been.
She could pretend to be Louis. And pretending to be Louis was…better that truly being Domi…wasn’t it?
So…why did Noé want her to wear this dress? Didn’t Noé prefer her looking like Louis?
“I like it when you have your hair long too. It feels so much like you’re Domi, then, and…I really like it.”
Or perhaps…
Would he like that? Would he really?
She looked at herself in this dress and she thought in some far-off part of her brain that, perhaps she was beautiful. And perhaps he picked this dress because he knew she would like it, and he knew she would look nice in it.
But she would have looked better in it if her hair were longer.
*
Noé was so glad to have Domi.
He missed Louis, and he wanted Louis back, certainly. But he was glad to have Domi, and he wanted Domi to be, well, Domi. She was no pale imitation of her brother, and didn’t deserve to be treated as such.
It made him so sad to see her cut her hair, and put herself in Louis’ clothes. It made him so sad that she thought that’s what she was, what they all wanted.
He had to show her he appreciated her.
He waited in his chair at the table with equally determined, yet barely simmering excitement.
Noé had once read a book Teacher brought from the human world in which a group of mad characters had tea in the forest. Noé thought it was rather fantastic idea, and asked Teacher if they could accomplish such a thing. The table had to be long, and the tea had to be all over it, with lots of cakes too. Teacher laughed, saidWhat an amusing notion, and that he was sure he could set something up.
Noé wasn’t sure exactly how, but when he and Murr entered the forest, was delighted to find it almost exactly as he’d pictured. (Okay, not exactly. There was more substantial dinner food than tea, and not nearly enough desserts, but still.)
When Domi came through the forest Noé stood up, like she was a princess who deserved respect. And he wouldn’t say she didn’t look like it; he had made the right choice. The short hair looked kind of nice with it.
“You look great!” He pumped his fist at his side again.
Domi looked at the ground, but brushed her hair behind her ear.
“Why are we doing this?” She asked, but her eyes scanned the table and the dishes with that barely perceptible curiosity.
“It’s for you!”
“I mean what are we celebrating?”
“Uhh, we’re celebrating you, then, I guess!” Noé continued determinedly, pulling out a chair for Domi, as Teacher poured some blood into her goblet.
“But it’s not my birthday.” She continued looking at the setup as she sat down.
“Why does it have to be for us to want to celebrate you?” Noé sat down in another chair next to hers.
Domi’s eyes widened, and her eyes changed as she observed the table, becoming more awed, with an almost tearful shimmer to them.
When she turned back to look at Noé, for the first time since Louis’ death, he thought he really was really seeing Domi.

I'd love to see more fics exploring Noé & Domi (not necessarily in a shipping light, though I do love those two. It's the ~history~ y'know! *chef's kiss*). But I also agree, Roland & Olivier are two characters that would be really fun to explore. What are they doing when they break out of chasseur mode? I find it amusing that Olivier is so popular with the ladies but can't be bothered by all that. Heh!
Hey there! I'm so so sorry it took me forever to get to your prompt!! I loved it and fully intended to return to it...but my inspiration sort of left as soon as it came.
So I thought maybe I'd use some of these prompts for the vnc countdown since it's giving me some more! I hope that's alright!
Enjoy!

Teacher laughed, said What an amusing notion, and that he was sure he could set something up.

I really hope you like what I came up with! I had hoped it would be longer but I do really like the idea. And please do send me another prompt if you were hoping for something different, or else have a new idea!
Oh also, I realized after I wrote it that it's possible Noé couldn't leave the manor at that age, but I don't remember, and I didn't want to change the beginning since I realized this when I was about to post
For Roland and Olivier, I don't have something ready quite yet, but I am working on something, and I thought I'd post a snippet here for you! I'm honestly quite proud of this XD
Olivier was having a perfectly satisfactory morning. His coffee smelled just the right shade of black, and was perfectly scalding. He brought a book he’d been hoping to read for a while, but hadn’t had the time for. He lit a cigarette, and the smoke was as decadent to him as any dessert. He was just opening up said book, just bringing the cigarette to his lips when—
“OLIVIER!”
Oliver didn’t jump. Didn’t shout or otherwise react in surprise at the sudden disruption to his morning. Instead, very slowly, he closed the book, very carefully he set down his coffee. Very slowly, he lifted the cigarette and took a long drag, blowing out a wisp of smoke.
And he silently regretted (not for the first time) telling Roland where his favorite coffee shop was.
Question. For this Roland and Olivier fic, would you be more interested in reading about them running around trying to help someone find their lost pet, or a fic exploring them going to fly that small aircraft Roland was talking about? Or do you have another idea for what Roland might be worked up about? XD Feel free to put it in my ask box, I could always put this fic with that ask!
Thanks so much for sending me this prompt!!

“Can some of you stop acting as if Domijeanne is only a ‘complement’ to Vannoé? I don’t ship Domijeanne because I also ship Vannoé, but because I value their relationship and I’d like to see wlw relationships getting more attention. Jeanne is my favorite character and I think she deserves the world (Dominique). It has nothing to do with Vanitas and Noé, not everything is about men. Stop being stupid.“
