Andrew looks at Kevin after the game against the Trojans.
"How does it feel?" He asks Kevin.
"Losing is not pleasant for anyone," says Kevin.
"Sorry," Andrew says without meaning it at all. "I wanted to say, how does it feel to know that Monsieur Misérable and Mr. Golden Smile are fucking together and have agreed to beat you up?"
Kevin turns to him with a growing bad mood.
"They're not having sex."
"D'Artagnan hit you too hard with the racket. You don't know what you're saying."
"They're not having sex, Andrew!"
"New bet then. I say that France conquers California before the end of the year... In two months if Monsieur Trauma takes care of his shit."
"...Jeremy has never told me he's gay."
Andrew remains silent. He turns his head towards Kevin very very slowly.
"300 dollars."
"We're not going to bet on this..."
"500 dollars."
"Why are you so happy to do this?"
"What do you mean, Kevin? I'm a very happy man."
It's impossible to tell if Andrew is joking with that unflappable expression.
And so the betting returns to the Foxes.

au where kevin taught the foxes french but just didnt fill neil in on that little tidbit bit of information so any time he dropped lore about himself in french all the foxes would have to pretend they didnt understand what neil was saying. (looking at you specifically that one scene in chapter 5) imagine how different the book wouldve been. just a silly little thought

Oohhh a French speaking AFTG fan!
Can I ask what’s the general opinion on the Marseille accent? What do Canadians think of it? Is it fancy? Or rough?
ouhh what a question anon! i'm tagging @givemethedamnflowers so she can help me out too if u want to <3
also i don't speak for all Franco Canadians / Québécois. fiy. ya know.
as a Québécoise first and foremost (Canadian comes 2nd in how i view my identity), and as someone WHO HAS A MOREAU FROM MARSEILLES in my close family, i love the accent. to me it's somehow much less grating than the Parisian accent (not the international French accent, that one's ok) despite being much more pronounced and how do you say... quirky? not weird, but like it's definitely peculiar. special! i like it a lot. it also makes me love Jean Moreau even more because it adds character, an edge, another area of fondness. i personally think it's very easy to spot, but contrary to the north of France, it's easier to understand.
i would say the most northern accents are much rougher, more difficult to understand than Marseilles or Paris, also because of the disparity in colloquialisms and regional expressions. but i do love them so. Bourgogne?? Normandie?? oh how lovely. and then down down down down south, neighbor to Marseilles, l'Occitanie (a fave)!!! oh and la Corse!!! so so beautiful to me. music to my ears. maybe bc, as Québécoise, like i said, i feel a little kinship with those regions' accents, bc the Paris/Île-de-France spit upon our accents as shitty, ridiculous, "not real French" or generally make fun of us, like we're somehow less smart bc of the way we pronounce things and speak with our accent. in my experience! and trust me, i've had a lottttttt of 'em. so the little scene where Jean keeps being annoyed by Thea calling him 'Paris' when he's from Marseilles? ACCURATE & GOLDEN! made me smile.
that being said, as it has been discussed many many times in the fandom, characters like Neil, Kevin and Jean, and even Andrew and Nicky, have such wild backgrounds, with how much they move around geographically + their mixed heritage, that all of them must have unique accents you can't really pin down. Jean left Marseilles at 14, was homeschooled, then forced to learn Japanese then English, in West Virginia, from native Japanese speakers. he doesn't have the Marseilles slang, the refs; his French is stuck at that level and it can't progress, and he also probably loses a lot of it, breaking down over time. finding his words must be a a nightmare. imagine trying to translate a word that isn't even considered French nor translatable outside of Marseilles' region!!! also, how old were his parents? what generation of slang has he picked up by default? or was he, sadly, taught international French?
SO MANY QUESTIONS! UGH! aftg & languages, French specifically, give me a headache (and heartache) every time.
i would say, watch films and series! please! from every part of the Francophonie around the world! Belgium, Louisiana Cajun, Acadia, Québec, Marseilles, Niger... it's a beautiful language, despite his devastating shameful hand in colonization and racism. the way the people forced to learn and speak it to survive have all found ways to make it theirs in infinite ways that help the language evolve and become richer. French is as much theirs now, if not more. French is much more that than the Republic. French is not Paris.
thank you again anon for allowing me to go off on a tangent, and apologies if there are any mistakes, misinformation or harmful things. please let me know kindly and i'll own to it and correct anything that needs correcting!

You absolutely nail the educational neglect thing. Both the personal shame, the social exclusion, and the fascination with educated people/desperate to learn with whatever diy tools you have (because good education isn't just learning a thing, but also how to learn in the first place).
Tho low key, in whatever au Lestat did get an education i can't imagine he wouldn't be fighting with bad teachers/authority figures. Equally, with a good teacher, esp a music teacher, he would shine like the sun.
(x)
Thank you! And yeah! It's actually a topic that I think about a lot, especially because I think the show's really going to explore it given the way they've already threaded in him being bad at spelling in s2, and Louis weaponising Lestat not finishing books as an indication of him being shallow/unintelligent in their fight in 1.05 (I strongly suspect Louis doesn't know that Lestat was never taught how to read or write / I don't think that's something Lestat would want Louis to know about him, especially as Louis reads as highly educated to me. That said, given how cruel Louis can get in a fight [I love him, your honour, haha], I wouldn't put it past him weaponising it even if he did know, honestly). Their educational gap too is just an interesting dynamic in a relationship too, and I can't imagine the writers wouldn't want to explore that.
Plus it really is such a huge part of TVL too, particularly in terms of Lestat's attraction to Nicki, and later his draw to Marius, and I think it's just so formative to who Lestat is as a character. His curiosity and wonderment with the world is a huge driving force for him as a character, and I do think that's born out of that educational neglect. I'm really curious as to what the show does with it, especially because I think they've been clear already that vampirism isn't an instant educational tool like it is in the books i.e. Lestat miraculously knows how to read and write the moment he's turned in TVL, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there's ever really language barriers in the books? But the show demonstrates that Claudia has to teach herself the languages she can later speak, and even as they're travelling, Claudia can speak Romanian, but Louis can't, and Sam's already talked about Lestat having to learn to speak English (and doing so on the ship to America), which makes me think he and Rolin have probably discussed it.
But yes! I think Lestat could be a pretty difficult student with anyone who wasn't a very good teacher, haha. I think he'd need someone both warm and really patient, because even though Lestat's so desperate to be taught, he's still Lestat, haha.
There's also a sense of frustration which comes with not being able to do things you think you should be able to do. One of my nephews has a rare motor disability which severely effects his ability to speak, and I help my sister with his homework from his speech and occupational therapists quite a bit. He can get really frustrated, especially because he knows what he wants to say, but the words will come out wrong (i.e. screwdriver might come out as driverscrew, or he'll temporarily lose certain sounds completely, so suddenly might not be able to say any words with an 'at' sound like 'that' or 'cat'). His therapists, my sister and I are all really patient with him, but he's not always patient with himself, and I mean, he's only 7, haha, but I actually do think Lestat would fall into that a bit too with not giving himself the time and space to get it wrong when he feels he knows how to get it right.
With the right teacher though - - yeah. Shining like the sun is a good way to put it! :-)
#it's a really interesting thing to consider an au with him being taught from a younger age#because i actually do think it would fundamentally change his character?#his relationship to the world really does feel steeped in that lack of ever being taught#and it's really interesting to consider what that means in his dynamics with both louis and nicki#it's part of why i'm not concerned about the age gap between nicki and lestat on the show#i think him being educated in paris while lestat has never left the auvergne is a lot more important than them having been the same age#plus all the french revolution stuff drastically shifts their dynamic now of course#with lestat being a broke aristocrat and nicki (and all his college friends) being a part of the bourgeoisie#lestat asks#iwtv asks#iwtv and education

the thing about interview with the vampire season 2 is that sam reid does a decent accent when he is playing a frenchman speaking english, but his french is pretty atrocious.
#i don't really care about it when it's the other coven members bc i don't remember how many of them#are supposed to be native francophones. and obviously armand isn't.#but ouuuugh. i know that there's only so much coaching will do for the uvular trill#but aaaaaaaaAHHH he's supposed to be a native speakerrrrrrrrr#nicki's actor is also conspicuously not a native speaker#actually i don't think anyone with a named role is besides roxane duran (madeleine)#txt#WAIT lol they could have had him use the alveolar trill. hold on. i don't remember what region of france he's said to be from in tvl. but#in both book and show canon it would be within reason for his native french to POSSIBLY still be spoken with an alveolar trill#hello can anyone hear meee

“He got even more ironical when his rich student friends came around to talk to him. They thought he was a lunatic to live as he did. And for me, a nobleman shoveling actresses into their costumes and emptying slop buckets, they had not words at all.
Of course all that these young bourgeois really wanted was to be aristocrats. They bought titles, married into aristocratic families whenever they could. And it's one of the little jokes of history that they got mixed up in the Revolution, and helped to abolish the class which in fact they really wanted to join.
I didn't care if we ever saw Nicolas's friends again. The actors didn't know about my family, and in favor of the very simple Lestat de Valois, which meant nothing actually, I'd dropped my real name, de Lioncourt.”
Not easy to turn to music in an improvisation… 😂 but…
I was thinking on classical music, making it sarcastic/ironic, Nicolas’ sorrow & his friends’ views on him & Lestat & how much is just self protection.
What thoughts do people have on how the French Revolution might be used on TV.
Do you think we might get something inspired by this on TV?
Do you think Nicolas’ friends might betray Lestat seeing as well now be in the middle of the French Revolution?
Im so skippy. I love to bounce.

Some interesting tidbits about district assignments
Each underboss starts with one district, their "home" district, if you will. You get to decide which additional districts they get, but there's some assignments that some underbosses might like more than the others.
Southdowns - Vito/Cassandra
Pedestrian chatter indicate it had a large, if almost exclusive Italian presence before.
Vito comments on having a "favorite diner in Southdowns."
If you assign Cassandra to Southdowns, some pedestrians are concerned about the Italians and Haitians not getting along. Some pedestrians say they're getting along.
Cassandra says, "Laundry Machines, cigarettes and stereos. Southdowns knows how to turn a dollar out of everyday items. This is real good for us."
In contrast, Burke doesn't have anything interesting to say.
Barclay Mills - Cassandra
The other two comment on Barclay Mills being garbage, but Cassandra has dreams of revitalizing Barclay Mills. Curiously, Emmanuel says that that's because "she never has to go there."
Vito and Alma admit to having little experience with trains and factories.
Tickfaw Harbor - Cassandra/Vito/Burke
Emmanuel comments on the harbor being good for the marijuana business, and Cassandra likes it for general import/export.
Vito and Alma mention that the harbor would make their smuggling operation easier.
Burke and Nicki seems to be more interested in the car rackets.
Downtown - Cassandra
Burke and Vito seem more focused on the money while Cassandra's top priority is power and City Hall.
There's the usual talk about rising crime if Burke or Vito get the district, but with Cassandra, people comment on protests and clashes with the police.
Frisco Fields
All the underbosses seem to like Frisco Fields as a way to spite the wealthy, white residents there, and they don't seem too disappointed if they don't get the district.
Alma is a bit surprised if you give Frisco Fields to Vito.
Nicki dislikes Frisco Fields. It might be because she was in their ER once.
French Ward - Cassandra/Burke
Cassandra and Emmanuel mentions taking care of the sex workers there.
Burke likes vice and the rackets but Nicki seems more exasperated because of him.
Vito has little experience with the rackets there, but he seems to want to run it. Alma has no desire to run the sex rackets.
There's also some common themes in the chatter around each underboss's assignment.
Vito: Increased Italian presence, crime, protection rackets. People also comment on increased Italian cuisine. Memorable quote: "Guess what's at every crime scene lately in Frisco Fields? Marinara."
Burke: Increased Irish presence, moonshine, robberies.
Cassandra: Increased Haitian and black presence. The commentary is usually just racist remarks, but black pedestrians comment on increased black businesses and diversity.
#please correct me if i'm wrong!#im basing this off of their lines if they did or didnt get the district#without the in-game context#mafia 3#cassandra mafia#thomas burke#vito scaletta#emmanuel lazare#nicki burke#alma diaz#all in all it seems cassandra has lots of dreams and plans that she needs money and power for#while burke seems to be going through the motions#and vito just sees it as money and business#cassandra and emmanuel are most aligned#vito and alma are next but occasionally vito surprises alma#and obviously burke and nicki are in conflict#or nicki comments more on the history of the district#i am confused that he thought lincoln would give him french ward though#and it's interesting that both vito and burke dont really care about politics
