Apokolips...NOW! (RIP Jack Kirby Dan Turpin)
[All images are owned by DC Comics and Warner Bros-Discovery. I hope I’m too small fry to sue…]
[QUICK NOTE: This review is going to go a bit more off the rails than normal, as it deals with history of the characters involved (and, in some cases, their creator) beyond the scope of the Dini-verse]
Following Crisis, Metropolis gained a few new regular faces in the pages of Superman’s titles, as well as a new faction (besides LexCorp): Metropolis PD’s Special Crimes Unit (SCU), whose job it is to deal with super-powered menaces (pretty much every city has one, even ones that don’t have a resident super hero, since you never know when a super villain might pack up and move to another city with easier pickings)
Heading up Metropolis’s SCU is Inspector Maggie Sawyer, who started out wanting to push Superman out of the City of Tomorrow (good luck with that! If Lex Luthor couldn’t manage it…), but soon became an ally. In the comics, she was revealed to be gay (which Luthor tried to use against her) and eventually transferred to Gotham (no clue if her sexuality had anything to do with that, but it was the late 80s and publicly being part of the LGBTQ community was even rougher than it is today)
Sawyer is also head of the SCU in the Animated Series, but her sexuality is never directly addressed (though there are hints that got past Standards and Practices)
Sawyer’s second-in-command is Inspector Dan Turpin (whom the papers dubbed “the Unstoppable Cop” due to his resiliency) His design was modeled in homage to…
(Thanks to SF Gateway)
Jack Kirby, who helped create most of Marvel’s most iconic characters (including Captain America, the X-Men, Thor, the Fantastic Four, and Nick Fury). When he left Marvel after a contract dispute, he went to DC Comics where he created the New Gods (more on them later) Kirby passed away two years before Superman: the Animated Series debuted. No doubt he would’ve been amused and/or honored.
[NOTE: There are a LOT of Easter Eggs related to Kirby in this episode. I’ll try to hit them all, but if I miss any, please let me know]
Anyway, enough back story, on to the subject of this review. If you would like to watch it, it’s available on Max or behind your favorite paywall.
We open with an armored car (carrying $20 million in confiscated money) with a police escort, with Sawyer in the lead vehicle, entering a secure facility.
Meanwhile, outside…something latches on to the facility with aloud THUMP.
That doesn’t look very friendly. The flying vehicle (we’ll just call it a hovertank) blows a hole in the wall. Sawyer gets on her car’s radio to call for backup, but the hovertank blows up her car and she barely gets out in time. However, the explosion throws her across the room!(I’m sure she’ll be fine, right?) Turpin goes to check on her, but she’s unconscious at the very least.
In the meantime, the hovertank grapples onto the armored truck and flies away.
However, they don’t get far as Big Blue shows up to stop them. However, they launch a sonic device that shatters nearby windows and plays havoc with everyone’s ears until Superman manages to destroy it with his heat vision. Naturally, the hovertank gets away while Superman is busy recovering.
Later, at Metropolis General Hospital, Sawyer is recovering from her injuries. Turpin vows to nail the bastards who did this (in much more kid-friendly terms)
…but Sawyer reminds him that he’s in charge of the SCU until she recovers, so all eyes will be on him.
(The woman by her side is Toby Raynes (voiced by SNL alum Laraine Newman) who was Maggie Sawyer’s lover in the comics. Their relationship isn’t mentioned in the series, so most viewers would just think they’re friends)
Meanwhile, at the mansion of mob boss Bruno Mannheim…
Well, now we know who owns the hovertank. While Mannheim gloats, his bracelet flashes, so he shoos his goons away so he can speak to his benefactor.
OK, anyone familiar with DC Comics will know who this is, but this is his first appearance in the Dini-verse (though not on TV, as he was the primary antagonist for the last two seasons of Superfriends), so let me explain…
Darkseid was created by Jack Kirby as the primary antagonist in his New Gods series. He is the ruler of a world known as Apokolips and one of the major Big Bads in the DC multiverse, able to go toe-to-toe with Superman and (usually) give at least as good as he gets. He will be explained further later.
Darkseid (voiced by Michael Ironside, who played Lt. Rasczak in Starship Troopers and Ham Tyler in the 80s V franchise) is not happy that Mannheim is using his technology for petty theft (to a god $20 million is chump change) Darkseid then disintegrates the pile of cash. Mannheim gets the message and toes the line.
[Quick note on Bruno Mannheim: In the comics, Mannheim heads up a terrorist organization known as Intergang that constantly gives Superman trouble. Three guesses who supplies Intergang with weapons]
The next day, Turpin holds a press conference, saying they can’t rely on Superman to deal with the vehicle.
Look, I’m not saying the Unstoppable Cop isn’t brave or capable, but one would think he shouldn’t be so cocky against something that could stop Superman.
Suddenly, the air crackles and a portal opens with a deafening boom (why do you think they’re called “Boom Tubes”?) and from it emerges…
The man on the weird apparatus crashes to the floor, sliding against the far wall (well, I guess that’s one way to make an entrance) He then staggers to his feet, yelling that about warning Superman before collapsing before he could say about what.
The next day…

(Thanks to The Night Beyond)
Told you I’d get back to Darkseid (as well as the rest of the New Gods)
Orion confirms the hovertank is from Apokolips offers his assistance against Darkseid’s forces.
[Quick side note: Why is it that alien invaders always start with the major population centers where all of the superheroes and military forces hang out? I mean, why not start in a less developed region like Africa or South America…or even better, one that’s difficult for terrestrial forces to reach like Australia or Antarctica? That way they could build a base of operations in which to obtain resources to properly attack the bigger threats to their conquest.
OK, soapbox moment over. Back to our story!]
(“Sinnott Air Force Base” is an Easter egg, referring to artist Joe Sinnott, who often worked with Kirby)
At Sinnott Air base, the hovertank has found a friend and the pair are destroying the fighter jets and the flight tower. A couple of jets on patrol fire on the hovertanks, which is about as effective as you’d expect. Then Superman and Orion fly onto the scene.
…but the Man of Tomorrow doesn’t fare any better. Fortunately, Orion is on hand to free Superman and down the hovertanks.
Back at Mannheim's estate, Darkseid checks in.
youtube
(Thanks again to The Night Beyond)
[Yes, the nuclear plant is another Easter egg. The island is named after Dick Ayers, another artist who worked with Kirby]
[Also, yes Orion was the infant Darkseid gave up. The child of Highfather was named Scott Free and eventually escaped Apokolips with his new wife Big Barda to become the World’s Greatest Escape Artist, Mister Miracle]
I think Superman will need not only Orion to deal with Darkseid, but the Flash to help evacuate Metropolis before it becomes an irradiated husk.
Professor Hamilton informs Superman that the explosion caused the atomic core to start burning its way straight to the Earth’s core.
In other words, it will transform Earth into another Apokolips!
Speaking of Apokolips, Darkseid knows Superman will attempt to stop the chain reaction, so sends one of his lieutenants to deal with him.
(Really? Steppenwolf? Was Pink Floyd taken?)
I’m not sure if he’s up for the task, but he is born to be wild.
Back on Earth, Superman attempts to contact Orion for help, but Orion’s device doesn’t work, having been fried by the EMP from the explosion.
So Earth is on their own unless they can find a Boom Tube lying around.
Funny I should mention that, because as Superman flies toward the reactor in an attempt to somehow stop it from burrowing…
Unfortunately, it’s not Orion, but Steppenwolf, riding in on a magic carpet his sky chariot. Steppenwolf sends his band-mates Parademons to attack the Man of Steel, but that ends about as you’d expect.
While Superman is distracted, Steppenwolf (sorry, I don’t have any other jokes handy; I only know two of their songs) fires an energy net that weakens Superman and sends him crashing to the ground.
The Parademons pile on to Superman, who is having trouble fighting back in his weakened state.
Fortunately, an attack helicopter fires on Steppenwolf, giving Superman a breather. Now who would be crazy enough to lead an attack on one of Darkseid’s elites?
…yeah, that tracks. Turpin then orders the SWAT team to attack the Parademons that are still giving Superman issues. With the MPD having things well in hand (for now...I mean, they are Darkseid’s forces), Superman is free to do what he was trying to do.
And he does indeed put it out by tunneling repeatedly through the ocean floor into the reaction’s path, extinguishing it (of course, that likely irradiated Metropolis Harbor, but who’s counting?)
This takes a lot out of Superman, so he takes a moment to catch his breath. Naturally…
…Darkseid takes that moment to make his presence known. He then hits Superman with his Omega Beams (think heat vision cranked up to 1,000), which takes the last of his reserves.
On the ground, Turpin is leading an increasingly failing defense against the Parademons.
(hey, you can’t say he’s not trying!)
However, Darkseid shows up on a war machine…
...with Superman displayed like a trophy.
Darkseid announces his intentions to conquer Earth and demands their surrender (and you’re making them in Metropolis? I mean, I know Lex Luthor lives there, but you’d think he’d make demands in Washington DC after leveling Metropolis)
Yeah, that’s on-brand for Turpin.
He then knocks out a Parademon, takes his energy lance and throws it at the war machine.
Nice shot, Dan!
Superman then manages to free himself and is ready for Round Two when more Boom Tubes open, and forces from New Genesis, led by Orion, emerge.
Orion tells Darkseid to shove off or risk war with New Genesis. Darkseid relents.

(Thanks to JayJoker958)
Rather fitting that someone who looks like an homage to Jack Kirby was killed by one of Kirby’s creations.
Quick note: There are a few Easter eggs that were in the original broadcast of Dan Turpin’s funeral that WB, for obvious reasons, made the animators re-animate and take out (they can be seen if you watch the episode on Max)
…Kirby’s co-collaborator at Marvel, Stan Lee
…along with Kirby’s creations Nick Fury, the Fantastic Four (well, three of them; Ben Grimm couldn’t make it), and Black Panther.
If you spot any others, please let me know!

What your favorite comic book writer says about you:
John Byrne: When you say you wish comics would go back to the 80′s and 90′s this is what you mean. Also, you like to forget he went nuts on a forum once.
Mark Millar: You are a walking contradiction. You love really fucked up edgy stories and you like good stories with good morals as well.
Garth Ennis: You are the edgelord supreme. You also like war stories and the Punisher.
Frank Miller: You are one of two people:
1.You are an edgy 14 year old who just discovered TDKR. You proclaim him to be the greatest, edgiest writer. You also like to pretend his post Sin City work doesn’t exist.
2. You’ve read his other work besides TDKR and can appreciate how he can go in depth with some characters. This is before he went nuts btw.
Pau Dini: You are a chad with good taste.
Dwayne McDuffie: You like great well written diverse characters. You use him as the gold standard of writing diverse characters.
Jason Aaron: You have shit taste.
Ta Nehisi Coates: You are black, and you love being black, and tell everyone the first chance you get how black you are.
Alan Moore: You are 1 of 2 people:
1. You either have only ever read Watchmen and think he’s the greatest thing to grace comics ever and everyone must bow down and worship him. and believe Watchmen should be the norm.
2. Or you have read his other works and like his depth to comics but also understand he is not a god to be worshipped but just a writer. And that watchmen should not be the norm and Tom Strong is a much better embrace of superhero comics.
Grant Morrison: You are an alt chick in her 20′s that likes weird, trippy esoteric stories with a deeper meaning.
Kurt Busiek: You love fun straightforward super hero stories that are very well done.
Geoff Johns: You have great nostalgia for Barry Allen and Hal Jordan and silver age nostalgia. You like fun, expanding stories but that’s all you like. You cannot write philosophical stories to save your life.
Mariko Tamaki: You really like social commentary despite how dull and poorly done it is. Also, you obsess over food a lot.
Jonathan Hickman: You have the patience of a saint or you have nothing going on in your life.
Greg Weisman: You love well written planned out organic stories and you love Shakespeare.
Christopher Priest: You like well written stories alongside being black. And in depth character arcs that kind of peter out at the end.
Gail Simone: You love her earlier works and pretend her post 2011 works are still good even though they’re not.
Chuck Dixon: You love gritty crime stories, action stories and espionage. You are also probably a conservative.
Larry Hama: You love military adventures and are obsessed with ninjas.
Charles Soule: You love incorporating how the legal system works into your stories. Otherwise you are pretty good compared to your contemporaries.
Vita Ayala: You are woman in your 30′s who thinks she’s hip with the kids but is not. You desperately cling onto your youth. You use Twitter way too much.
Tom King: You are a masochist. You and Tom King desperately need to see a therapist.
Nick Spencer: You like smaller street level character stories. You cannot write event titles and social commentary to save your life. You should stick to street level stories.
Mark Waid: You like fun wholesome stories. You also cannot write social commentary to save your life.
Chip Zdarsky: You are competent at super hero writing. You maintain this equilibrium of being good but never great.
Gene Luen Yang: You like Chinese mythology and the “Asian American Experience” TM. In fact that’s all you seem to like.
Brian Michael Bendis: You are 1 of 2 people.
1. You love his older work and how he handles street level characters. You also acknowledge he went to shit as a writer once he got to work on the Avengers.
2. You blindly read his work no matter what. Even though he has gotten worse as a writer. You believe dialogue is more important than visuals. You love his walls of text to the point you would read a novel by him. But you are too insecure to read novels because that’s for grown ups and you are still mentally 14 years old.
Warren Ellis: You like stories that are fucked up but also have something poignant and deeper to say. Also, you like to say the word, “fuck” a lot.

Ukw I’m gonna write useless meta about John and zee again, bc JLD volume 1 really set a precedent on how they’re treated by the larger DC community. The new52 erased their well established friendship, and changed their origins massively (while the Nick necro polycule is interesting, it just didn’t do anybody involved justice in terms of character development). I’ve seen people say that John and zee are toxic for each other, and while I could see that potentially, I think people unfairly pin that on John. It insinuates he’s incapable of relationships and has too many demons (literally and figuratively) to make it work.
What this does is deny the fact that in Hellblazer canon, John had several meaningful relationships, including Kit and Dani. So obviously while he’s a cynic and comes with a whole lot of baggage, it doesn’t mean he doesn’t love, and love often.
If anyone could understand where his darkness lies, and match his magical capabilities, (and surpass them! Miss me with that misogynistic bullshit) it’s Zee! And Zee is not perfect either! The whole “damaged vs perfect angel” thing does both of them dirty! She’s got issues too, but as I’ve already written, wouldn’t it make sense that the one person who would understand her sometimes toxic reliance on magic/ her guilt be John? Instead of being in this constant loop where John is pinned as the sole reason their relationship “wouldn’t work”, we could instead thing about what makes them so compelling in the first place.
Basically I’m just heated about people misinterpreting John’s character in a way that does them both a disservice. He’s deeply flawed but like. Not a disgusting slutty idiot that crashes into her life to sabotage her relationships (thanks Dini) nor is he a blithering idiot that makes the wrong choice every time, and is constantly getting yelled at by Zee (thanks JLD). He’s capable of being a real sweetheart when he puts his mind to it, and even when his relationships crash and burn, he still treasures that person. (Can I point you all towards Ennis’s and Jenkins’ run on Hellblazer). And before the reboot, Zee was supportive of him! While she acknowledged how messy they were, they were affectionate in Books of Magic and she showed up to celebrate his birthday with him when he was brooding about being alone. I think they know each other better than anybody in canon. It’s valid to want zatanna to be independent of him! But their relationship was still a good thing, and they held a lot of affection for each other. DC writers pls do your goddam research and also erase all evidence of JLD 1 from the internet

“Pamela Isley loathes and despises all of humanity, singly and as a species. But apparently she loathes and despises you less than everyone else. Quite a lot less.”
oh to be a silly little clown who's so loved and adored by a plant goddess that when she creates a replica to distract foes and keep her love company, that affection and deep rooted love is already so engrained in her veins that even tho she's not Ivy, she can't help but feel that tug that's more human than she could ever possibly be.

Saints Thump Storm Chasers 17-3!
Storm Chasers 3 Saints 17 W-Strotman (8-3) L-Bolanos (0-2)
The St. Paul Saints finally returned home after a two-week road trip last night. They picked up the win on a Gilberto Celestino walk-off infield single. Today, the Saints got back to work on a beautiful day at CHS Field. The Storm Chasers got the party started early this afternoon. Bobby Witt Jr. lined a ball off the center field fence that Mark Contreras went all out on. Witt raced around the bases for an inside-the-park home run and Omaha grabbed the one-run lead after an inning of play. The Saints finally got to work in the third when Sherman Johnson drew a lead-off walk and Jose Miranda lined a two-out double to left. Tomas Telis smacked a Ronald Bolanos offering out to left-center for a three-run homer and St. Paul took the lead 3-2. The Storm Chasers would answer in the fourth as Drew Strotman walked three batters. Nick Dini plated a pair with a single to left and the game was tied at three. The game didn’t stay tied for long as Drew Maggi smoked a Ronaldo Bolanos pitch out to left for a solo homer. This put the Saints up 4-3. Later in the inning, David Banuelos lined a Bolanos offering out to right for his first homer of the year. The Saints had a two-run lead and the bats were silenced through the middle innings. The Saints offense exploded in the final two innings. It all started with a Mark Contreras doubled to center. Gilberto Celestino walked and BJ Boyd doubled home a run. Grant Gavin walked the next two guys before David Banuelos took him deep for a grand slam. This capped off a six-run seventh for the Saints and they were not done yet. BJ Boyd started another rally with a one-out single. Drew Maggi reached on an infield single and Sherman Johnson walked to load up the bases. David Banuelos hit a run-scoring single to right and JT Riddle smacked a grand slam off Jake Newberry. Jose Miranda followed with a homer of his own and the Saints had a 17-3 lead heading into the ninth inning. Chandler Shepherd finished off two scoreless innings in relief and the Saints picked up the win today at home.
-Final Thoughts- Drew Strotman did a nice job and still needs to harness his control. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts to pick up the win. Chris Nunn retired four batters, Nick Vincent got out of the seventh, and Chandler Shepherd threw two scoreless innings. David Banuelos had a huge day with two homers and six RBI’s. Jose Miranda and Drew Maggi added three hits each. Tomas Telis, Mark Contreras and BJ Boyd had two hits on the day. The Saints hit 5-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base. Tomorrow, Marcelo Martinez faces Beau Burrows in Game 3 of this series.

Jingle Belle: A Very Special Jingle Belle Special or A goofy holiday comic and a long tired rant about the animation industry
Ho ho ho and merry Christmas as we reach the final stretch of Christmas reviews and it’s all Christmas all the time for the rest of the week for obvious reasons. So we’re starting off by wrapping up Jingle Belle for the season with one more comission. While it’s from my usual client, It’s via patreon as for 5 bucks a month you can get a review a month of your choice. But since that hasn’t taken hold just yet, and won’t till next month, he asked to swap it for this month and here we are. Not much to cover though this is the very comic where Jing hopped publishers from Oni Press to Dark Horse. The whys I genuinely do not know and at the time, I just know it’s weird to talk about Dark Horse these days. Their not dead nor entirely irrelvant, Resident Alien, which I really want to check out as it has a really engaging premise, is getting a tv show that I also want to check out as while i’m not sure if it’ll be good, it’s still Alan Tudyk playing an alien who can barely pass for human and it hilariously shows. Whenever that streams i’m not missing a second of that and we all know it. And Umbrella Academy, started during bigger days for the company, is one of netflix’s hottest shows and one of many shows on my to do list I haven’t gotten to because I procastinate like no one else and as taking an entire month to get to the newest loud house shows to the point another one popped up, it bites me in the ass a lot. Point is their not GONE in relevance.. but at the same time they’ve lost the huge tide of liscences they road in on. Except for the Joss Whedon stuff, Marvel’s pretty much taken EVERYTHING from them via various deals: Star Wars, Conan and now Alien. Their still standing and makes good art books and clearly given Resident Alien good content, they’ve lasted this long their not going anywhere, it’s just really weird to think about. I will however give them huge credit for giving out tons of comics in early quarantine, and being easily the most generous company next to marvel. I.e. one of the few that actually gave out full collections.
But yeah at the time this was probably a safe move as Dark Horse had a love of one shots and likely a larger budget. Hence why from here on out the stories are in living color, and have a slightly diffrent art style to boot. Granted the character would shift artists but now it’s got a clear more cartoony art style I like a lot better courtsey of Jose Garabaldi. So yeah with christmas on our heels, let’s ring a ding jing, it’s A Very Special Jingle Belle Special.
We won’t be covering the backup for this one though it is quite good, it’s just not what kev asked or paid for.
We open on a parade!
While batman foils the joker’s poisioning scheme, Santa rides on a float proudly and Jing is hanging out on the back grumpy. It’s a great introduction for new readers showing Santa being big and jolly and what you expect while Jing grumps in the back with a “Sheesh, Daddy”. That’s how you establish a character well in only a few panels. IT’s really great is what i’m saying. Some teens pop up but don’t belivie her about being Santa’s daughter and when going to a christmas shop to try and find figures of her, the owner claims he dosen’t.. and well violence insues. You’ve met jing right? Anyways Jing is understandably a wee bit absolutely livid the world dosen’t know about her. Her parents sure but her? Nope. And it’s easy to see why: She’s the daughter of the world’s most famous man.. but despite all the holiday lore and junk she’s just the part he likes to hide from people.. or that’s how it feels. While he ducks it, she even gives him a nice save fatty it’s clear that even if she brought it up to rile him a bit.. she does feel on some level like he likes to tuck her away and hide her because he’s ashamed and because she’s not perfect. Granted she does act out and stuff, but she’s still his kid and i’ts still gotta sting. Though she has the perfect idea to fix this: A christmas special. Santa suggests just doing good deeds but Jing is right: her idea is better. Mostly because, as cyncial as this is.. more people are going to pay attention to a good holiday special than a celebrity’s kid doing charity and for far longer. A good christmas special just sticks in the brain and sticks with you forever. It’s why Santa Claus is Coming to Town and A Charlie Brown Christmas have lasted decades or why my list of best chirstmas specials is pretty weighty. They just stick with you so while this can’t possibly end well.. her plan is actually a really good one this time.
So Jing takes her friends off the line to help her animate it, stop motion styles and they remind her of her LAST christmas special.
I mean I’m a sucker for any refrence to Star Wars Holiday Special. You’d think after several decades of jokes at it’s expense, with tons of youtubers, many of whom are dead to me but that’s besides the point, tackling the thing without it getting stale, that we’d eventually grow tired of mocking it but .. no. It’s a bottomless well of what they were thinking. The only question left is why isn’t it on Disney Plus.. I mean.. you made a second one as an affectionate parody and in lego. Kids are going to know about this now. Just put the thing up. Even edited down or just some clips. You put Rise of Skywalker up there, you’ve proven your threshold for shame when it comes to this franchise is vast. Just person up and do it. But Jing’s learned her lesson.. stop motion only and to follow the bouncing formula to sucess. So in the special which sadly isn’t all stop motion and is just drawn to resemble the specials, probably for the best but still, Jing and her animal pals are sneaking into a town where christmas was banned! Meeting the chirstmas legion of doom.. well okay that’s what i’m calling them. Burgermeister Budweiser! Bungle the Abominable Snow Monster! Frost Master and Heat BLister! The Frost Fakir.. wait the what?
........
I mean where do I even begin? I know this was during the war on terror, I know that.. but still I expect better from Paul Dini for a crosses the line twice joke than “hey let’s just make bin laden into an ice wizard!”. I mean South Park made fun of him too, but they went all out with a looney tunes homage. Put effort in. And even years after he died the lonely island did this beautiful thing in the film pop star: never stop stoppin, which you should watch seriously watch it it’s underated.
youtube
Point is you can do better and if you don’t have room to do better then just.. don’t. You could’ve put in a t-rex in a top hat and monocle. That would’ve genuinely been better... because it’s better than everything ever btu that’s besides the point. There’s also one last addition to the rogue’s gallery thank god.
He hates her too. Now that gag is actually reallyf ucking funny. What’s also funny is how she solves things. By singing a nice and frinedly song about friendship to reform the villians.. or rather lure them over a bridge to get eaten by her orca friend.
So Jing after showing it to her dad heads to market it with him trying to warn her netoworks haven’t aired this kind of thing in years. But she faces the greatest threat to all of television: network executives, who keep offering advices and basically change the thing all together for stupid reasons and think cartoons should only be for kids despite it wokring in the past. Aka the hells animators STILL go through. I think Paul was projecting just a wee bit with this one. Given again IT HASN’T CHANGED since then, I can’t blame him. Seriously Harvey Beaks was canceled, among MANY ohter nick shows including rise of the tmnt just because it wasn’t an instant hit, Cartoon Network and warner keep trying to make dumbed down remakes of great shows, and Disney, among other networks, is fairly homophobic and while finally allowing some gay on the network this year had to be fought and outright refused it on ducktales for no adquate reason, caring more about monney and the bible belt than doing the right thing. So yeah as you can tell this bit got to me a bit and was hard to read because it. hasn’t. changed. 16 years and not a lot has changed other than more women are getting a chance. And granted the “kids are our only audiencce argument” isn’t as strong and several shows are powered by other demographics it’s still an issue and still the reason several good shows have gotten the boot and why the jeph loeb era of marvel animation was terrible. Because guys like him thought it should JUST be for kids and the lowest common demoninator of htem. You can be clever and be for kids dammit.
I apologize slightly for that it’s just something that’s been on my mind as shows dwindle and with ducktales gone the standard forbearaers for children’s animation are all pretty fresh faced. It’s just a lot to take in and i’ts been on my mind a lot.
Back to the actual story the result is a pretty purtrid cutesy special.. Jing reacts how you’d expect, destroying the tapes covertly with a herd of musk ox and destroying the tape. But they find the 70′s special and we end on that which is pretty funny. The only thing I really don’t like here is the ending. The rest of this special is really good: it’s clever , has some good satire and some really funny jokes especially that hook one. The ending just feels a bit weak.. like yes Jing wanted to be noticed but it’s not really an unsympathetic motive and while she does some shady stuff the villians still basically win by airing her terrible holiday special all over again. It’s just not satisfying. But yeah overall another pretty decent holiday comic with some good jokes. I”ll probably see Jing again next year, and it was fun getting to dip into these comics. THeir not my faviorites, but their still pretty decent and if the complete collection ends up on sale on comixology or you see it in a bookstore and you think it’d be up your ally i’d buy it. Again not my faviorite thing ever, but still enjoyable enough. Coming up this week of holiday cheer: ducks, more ducks, superheroes, and a best of list.
Until next time: Courage.
