There Is No Such Thing As Freedom of Speech
Tumblr media
Briahna Joy Gray was fired from Rising, the YouTube news show from Nexstar Media yesterday and that was probably because she was vocally against what Israel is doing – committing a genocide – in Gaza and Rafah.
And predictably some were talking about how her freedom of speech was infringed upon, which really irritated me because not only is there no such thing, there has NEVER been any such thing.
What freedom of speech is aspirational, something to aimed for yet never reached.
Though what's worse is that this is fairly obvious no matter what country that you live in, you have NEVER, EVER had the right to say what you want to whomever you want.
That's because powerful people have always existed, and they don't like anyone to speak ill of them.
And that's before corporations came on the scene.
And speaking of corporations, what happened to Joy Gray is the real fascism, but I'm willing to bet you won't hear anyone call it out as such.
Democratic administration, Republican, it makes little difference at the end of the day.

Here’s some further nuance on what’s happened here:
Misha got hate and was called a liar and called disrespectful and rude for highlighting a very real systemic issue in linear broadcast TV that isn’t only at the CW, and has been an issue for decades, concerning how networks, not just the CW, put caps on representation. Even when there is other representation, the mentality is still repressive. You can have this much representation and no more. He spoke up at a con OUSA where filming of panels isn’t allowed.
Jared gets treated like a hero for having a public, high profile tantrum on one of the biggest entertainment news media outlets to call out CW Nexstar for retooling their business model to become like all the other linear broadcast TV networks. Where CW has sports and game shows and there’s a highly strict bottom line concerning profitability. This is common practice for ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox. Old CW was never a “real” linear broadcast model in the first place. WB/Viacom (CBS) made money off streaming not CW broadcast. Nielsen numbers never mattered there as much as the profits they made from streaming. The netflix deal is the actual reason CW stayed alive, not Jared.
Not that CW Nexstar didn’t create its own problems. In the course of their goals to become a profitable network and trying to be just like the big boys, they went so draconian, cut so down to the bone, they burned off bankable talents and good shows. Because their per ep licensing fee caps were so strict. But there is nothing shocking about the business remodel.
It’s weird. That is just plain weird that Jared is treated as the hero and a revolutionary while Misha gets hate and called a liar while people ignore how much bolder Misha’s criticism of the system actually is. Jared goes off about stuff the CW Nexstar president himself has said in countless interviews. Publicly acceptable, public knowledge. Whereas Misha’s sting at linear broadcast censorship and caps on representation is one of those things nobody is supposed to talk about. While I’m fairly sure Misha shouldn’t care about alienating the CW Nexstar any more, systemically, Misha stuck his neck out more, as carefully as he could. Jared’s tantrum isn’t speaking on any forbidden subject the system would like silenced, it’s him reacting to obvious and self-declared business remodeling.
These things are not the same.

I have no clue how the industry works. Could this hurt Jared’s future in the industry, because he was negative about his former network?
https://t.co/Gy6dDjsnZi
No, for a few reasons. First, bonafide lead actors with high-rated shows are easily forgiven i.e. David Boreanaz sued Fox over profit participation dispute for 5 years (X) and get a lead role of Seal Team on CBS during that time. Second, published interviews by Nexstar/CW late last year and early this year contradicts their actions during the negotiation breakdown with CBS. Third, everybody is kind of mad at Nexstar. Larry Teng publicly blasted them over Independence's cancellation and he went on to direct a CBS Tracker episode, which I believe Jensen guest star in, and he's producing a new CBS show, Watson. A month earlier the trade media publicly mourned the demise of the old CW, meaning gone is the gateway for countless writers and showrunners and knowing that there isn’t anything to take its place.
Even though the old CW wasn't technically a network, out of the "big 5 network", I've never seen as much loyalty to one network as I've seen for the old CW/WB/UPN because of their wide variety of genre shows outside the formulaic shows of ABC, NBC, and CBS.
Tumblr media
With that said, the old CW had also contributed to getting a few sub-par writers into positions they have no business being in. SPN’s own Megan Friztmartin being one of them and she went on to ruin Batman’s Tim Drake with her bisexual-fetish fixation. Fanboys complained that she made Tim all about his sexuality instead of a detective/student/hero. During this period the steaming wars caused a glut of contents and it became a golden age for bad actors and writers.

CW President Steps Down 2 Years After Nexstar Takeover; Entertainment Chief Brad Schwartz to Claim Top Spot Dennis Miller, who has served as network president ever since The CW was acquired and taken over by Nexstar Media Group in October 2022, is stepping down from the top post effective Oct. 31. Miller will serve in an advisory role through the end of the calendar year. Brad Schwartz, The CW’s current entertainment chief, will rise to the rank of network president upon Miller’s exit from the position.
Interesting...
Yep, I just reblogged the link. We'll see if Brad can do anything to improve the CW's downward spiral into oblivion.

One of the reasons for such a high number of disappearing queer characters is, claims the report, the sale of US network The CW. After The CW was sold to Texas-based media company Nexstar, a number of series were cancelled, including Batwoman, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl.
Almost a third of queer characters will disappear from screens next year, report finds

Okay I have to talk about it more explicitly, because the extent to which this man has just burned his bridges is breathtaking to me.
Like. We've always known he was a hothead who liked to run off at the mouth when pissed on social media, but there is a massive gaping chasm of difference between that and sitting down with a Variety reporter to slam your former network publicly and basically call them trash. Even if you're correct, that's the kind of thing you just don't do if you ever want anyone else to hire you.
And it truly can't have been a shock, right? Because Nexstar's strategy has been obvious and not at all a secret from the beginning. The first thing they did when they bought the CW was axe most of the scripted shows. They kept the handful that were high performing, fit their target demo best, and/or were close to the syndication point. But they cancelled Nancy Drew after four seasons. They cancelled Roswell, NM after four seasons. Slowly but surely, they cancelled everything, sometimes giving them enough of a heads up to wrap things up satisfyingly...and sometimes not.
So they were always, obviously, going to cancel Walker after four seasons. Even though it was one of their top performing shows. Because as much as I dislike the man, he's right about one thing: they were very transparent from the beginning about wanting cheap, easy-to-make, mindless content. They don't want to pay a huge roster of writers and actors and set crew and stunt coordinators and SFX folks and all the people required to make a scripted show worth watching week to week.
What fascinates me is that he talks like he's surprised about this. Like he somehow really thought his pet project would be exempt from this treatment. I don't even know what to do with that. I don't want to study him, but if someone else does, I'll read your thesis!
What else is fascinating to me is the way that in hindsight, it feels like this was a much longer time coming than it initially seemed. We knew big changes were going to come with Nexstar's purchase of the network, but the CW's decline started, IMO, long before that, when it began cancelling some of its longest-running mainstays like The Vampire Diaries, and relying too heavily on reboots and spin-offs. It's just inconceivable to me that someone who was entrenched in this machine since his early 20s wasn't aware this was coming. I almost feel bad for the guy.

With the CW network canceling almost all scripted shows on its network, many great shows have been canceled or are facing the threat of cancellation. Gotham Knights is potentially one of the shows that unfortunately, could share this same fate.
Many fans all over the world support Gotham Knights and would love to see it continued for more seasons! Gotham Knights has an immense following all around the world. The show has been a massive success globally, where streaming services like HBOMAX and the CW app have continuously shown the series in the top 10 most watched of 2023, ranking number six for the current year and number three for the last two months with only the international hits "The Last of Us", and "Succession" ahead, respectively. That's astounding statistics considering the series has only been on the air for two months.
Gotham Knights is the most talked about show on the CW. From its gripping and action-packed storylines, to production and costume design, to the phenomenal acting talent of a diverse cast, there is constant buzz about potential award nominations for this series. Misha Collins, playing the tragic Harvey Dent who, eventually becomes the iconic villain Twoface, has been exceptional invoking the duality of an honorable and upstanding man, who succumbs to his darker, deadlier side. Olivia Rose Keegan, as Duela Doe, not only provides comic relief, but is also effective showing her vulnerable side.
If the show is canceled, then the producers of the show will have to find a new home for it. However, that's not an easy task. The CW network, as well as, Nexstar Media Group, Inc. will have to be convinced to sell the show to other networks or streaming services. I do believe, however, that with the show's immense popularity and success on HBOMAX and the CW app, that selling it would be the best option if it's not renewed. Considering its popularity worldwide, other networks and streaming services would hugely benefit from acquiring Gotham Knights due to its cheaper production costs and potential buyers of streaming memberships.
I was moved to start this petition because I believe that Gotham Knights is a television series that is needed on air and to be seen not only for its talented cast and hardworking crew, but also for its diversity and real life issues that people around the world suffer with. In today's political climate where discrimination is rampant, Gotham Knights, embraces a cast of characters, as well as, actors of different race, sexual orientation, and sexual identity. They promote inclusion and acceptance, especially with the LGBTQIA community. Gotham Knights's storylines are emotional and raw because they tackle issues that are relevant in the world today, such as, substance abuse, mental health issues, homophobia, transgender discrimination and income inequality. Gotham Knights deserves to be renewed!
I'm writing this because this is something I care about deeply and it won't happen without the support of people like you. Starting a petition isn't something would normally do, but I was moved to do so because not only is this a show that means so much to the fans but also, to the entire cast and crew, who worked with dedication and love to create a series that fans would adore. It would be incredibly sad to see them so disappointed. I know I'm not alone and together we can make this change happen. Please sign and share!

The denialism and revisionist history going on pushing the fairy tale that Nexstar CW is the only CW era with problems that required calling out, and the invalidation towards any criticism of the pre-Nexstar eras, have gone completely off the rails.
Perpetuating these fairy tales and the erasure of CW Network's long-running history of issues helps enable the broken system people claim they care about denouncing.
The reality of CW Network history: Racism, homophobia, poor set practices, toxic abusive showrunners, systemic failure to support actors especially in marginalized groups, and fan base after fan base used for engagement and then treated badly.
These are systemic industry issues, not confined to any one network. CW became a lightning rod for it because it was unusually concentrated from one platform, so it stuck out and CW earned a terrible reputation, long before the sale.
To combat the revisionist history and denialism, behind the cut is a timeline with a few of the egregoius systemic problems that have plagued the CW historically and reflect severe enabling and lack of oversight on the part of the network.
Nexstar Media era acquired the CW on October 3, 2022.
The harm starts at the very beginning, though. On January 24, 2006, The CW was born. In its founding, The CW destroyed an entire slate of Black-led series on UPN and the resulting network was extremely white.
Candice Patton, in EW, reflecting on the early seasons of The Flash and how she had to speak up and advocate for herself and for Iris West (date of article May 23, 2023, but refers to pre-Nexstar CW) “The scariest thing is speaking up, and I had a hard time talking about it for such a long time because you're so afraid of being seen as problematic," she says. "That's a word that no actor wants to have follow them around. But I think we're learning that speaking up and speaking out is the only way for change. And it's not about blaming people or canceling people, it's about just really being able to have a conversation so that the industry changes for the better. And I hope that whatever struggles I may have had, doing that has made it even the smallest amount easier for the next crop of actors coming up who feel like they need to be heard and seen and accommodated for."
July 8, 2022, EW. Candice Patton reveals how she considered quitting The Flash in S2 due to racist fans and The CW and WB didn’t give her the support she needed, and reflects on how she was treated differently than her co-stars:
"Even with the companies I was working with, The CW and WB, that was their way of handling it. We know better now that it's not okay to treat your talent that way, and to let them go through this abuse and harassment. But for me in 2014, there were no support systems. No one was looking out for that. It was just free range to get abused every single day. There were no social media protocols in place to protect me, so they just let all that stuff sit there….It's just not enough to make me your lead female and say, 'Look at us, we're so progressive, we checked the box.' It's great, but you've put me in the ocean alone around sharks. It's great to be in the ocean, but I can get eaten alive out here…It was more about the protocols in place and the things I see happening for my white counterparts that's not happening to me. Seeing how I was treated differently than other people, seeing how I'm not protected by the network and the studio, those were the things that not necessarily hurt me but frustrated me."
January 28, 2022, Sunstroke Magazine - Looking Back On Kat Graham's Racist and Anti-Semitic Experience on 'The Vampire Diaries’ A summary: * Kat Graham endured racist and antisemitic comments from a co-worker. * The show forced her to wear a wig when she recommended using her natural hair for Bonnie * Ian Somerhalder had to step up to protect Kat, threatening to quit the show if Bonnie was killed off or written out * Showrunners shot down the idea of Bonnie being queer and was patronizing to Bonnie fans * Here’s a compilation of Kat Graham and her character Bonnie being mistreated during the run of TVD:

October 2021, EW and THR - Ruby Rose accuses CW and WBTV of bad set practices and that they were forced to keep filming 10 days after major surgery she had to undergo after being injured doing a stunt and called out bad practices that harmed crew and endangered everyone on set. CW and WBTV denied everything
June 7, 2021, Hypebae, Candice Patton speaking on issues concerning how PoC are treated at CW and systemically in the TV industry
November 22, 2020, Popsugar - The all-black cast of the superhero series Black Lightning have to find out from social media that the show is cancelled and are given no advance warning. China Anne McClain reveals she was going to quit the show even if it had continued: “For different reasons, that, to be honest, I don't want to go into. I just want y'all to trust me on it."

San Diego Comic Con 2017: the cast of Supergirl singing a song to mock a predominantly queer fanbase for the Supercorp ship

March 14, 2016, Variety - “What TV Can Learn From ‘The 100’ Mess” in the wake of The 100 killing off Lexa, an openly queer character.
April 6, 2016, EW - The 100: Ricky Whittle says showrunner 'abused' him off the show May 6, 2015 - Season 10, episode 21 of SPN "Dark Dynasty" airs, killing the show's only recurring openly queer character at that point, Charlie Bradbury.
It’s common knowledge Daman Salvatore is bi in The Vampire Diaries books. The character on the show, one of “classic CW”’s biggest hits, was straightwashed.
2013: Misha Collins at NJ Con comments on how women are treated on SPN:
Tumblr media
2024: Misha Collins at Purcon 8 shades the CW for placing representation caps on queer rep at SPN
The fact CW had other queer rep does not preclude the existence of pinkwashing, queer erasure, or queer censorship)
Tumblr media
November 2020: in the wake of Castiel's romantic love confession to Dean Winchester and in the immediate aftermath of the end of SPN, the nature of the confession was ommitted in all official promotional material and Misha Collins hinted he was told he couldn't talk about Cas's pov. Eventually, Misha Collins was able to speak openly that the writer intention and the story and everyone who worked on the scene intended it as a romantic love confession and that Cas is queer and in love with Dean.

Nexstar‘s third-quarter earnings reflected the soft TV advertising market, with political ad revenue down 85 percent from last year, and so-called “core” advertising revenue down 2.3 percent.
Similarly, The CW keeps losing money for the broadcast TV giant, though its losses continue to narrow quarter by quarter. The CW lost $60 million in Q3, down from $78 million last quarter.
Overall in Q3, Nexstar had revenue of $1.1 billion (down 10.8 percent from a year ago), and net income of $8 million, down more than 97 percent from a year ago, reflecting the robust political ad market in Q3 of last year.
In a comment, Nexstar CEO Perry Sook said that reduced losses at The CW, ad spending for the 2024 presidential election, and an “improving economic environment” should turbocharge the company’s earnings over the coming months.
He also argued that the Disney-Charter deal and changing media environment could work to Nexstar’s benefit.
“Broadcast stations have the most watched television content, and we remain undercompensated for that viewership,” Sook said. “With our significant audience reach, the broadcast model remains the only and best way to maximize viewership – something that broadcast networks and sports organizations understand. We believe that recent changes in the television ecosystem brought on by the Charter/Disney agreement will have a further positive impact on our model by creating stability in our subscriber base and freeing up programming spend from derivative cable networks to be reallocated to premium content like ours. The terms of our recent distribution and affiliation agreements reflect this viewpoint and we are very pleased with the outcome.”
The CW, which Nexstar acquired last year, has been reprogramming its lineup, ordering fewer expensive scripted shows, and cutting deals for more unscripted and sports fare, including a deal with the WWE for NXT this week.
The company also picked up some college sports rights, NASCAR Xfinity Cup rights, and LIV Golf rights, among others.
