As stated in the article, it is also used as a tool to socialize among the tribe. For example, giving it away is an expression of gratitude or appreciation. Historical context for amputation in Tolkien’s works

Maedhros, Beren, Sador, Gwindor, Frodo - there are a fair number of amputees in Tolkien’s work.  This is not entirely surprising when you look at the number of amputees (and people with other serious lifelong injuries) created by WWI.  In the British armed forces,  41,000 men had their limbs amputated during the war. 60,500 were wounded in the head or eyes. 89,000 sustained other serious damage to their bodies, and then there were people with shell-shock.  Post-WWI Britain was a society where there were a *lot* of people with amputations and other disabilities.   

Phantom pain was well known but not well managed, and after the war amputees were not very well supported. Losing one limb didn’t even entitle them to a full pension: you had to lose two limbs to get that.

You look at that, and suddenly the number of amputees in Tolkien’s work seems almost low.  What a horrible war.

إكتشافات جديدة في علم الأحياء التركيبية تجلبنا خطوة أقرب إلى ثورة صناعية

في تقرير جديد معتمد يوضح بان هناك طريقة بإمكانها تخفيض نسبة الوقت اللازمة لصنع أجزاء جديدة في الأحياء المجهرية من يومين الى ٦ ساعات فقط!

أبحاث علماء كلية امبريال في لندن تقول: ” ابحاثنا تجلبنا خطوة الى الامام نحو نوع جديد من الثورة الصناعية, وبامكان هذه المصانع البيولوجية ان تكون ذات انتاج ضخم”

هذه المصانع لديها ثروة من التطبيقات من اهمها تقديم علاجات متطورة للمرضى, تعديلات مُحسنة في طريقة استخراج المعادن من أعماق الأرض والتقدم في إنتاج الوقود الحيوي.

البروفيسور بول فريمونت، المدير المشارك لمركز البيولوجيا التركيبية والابتكار في إمبريال كولج في لندن والباحث المشارك في الدراسة هذه، يقول قبل الثورة الصناعية كانت الأشياء تتم صناعتها باليد, وهذا يعني جهد اكثر وتكلفة اكثر وانتاج محدود في العدد, نحن الان في منعطف مماثل في الاحياء المركبة, الحاجة إلى اختبار وبناء كل جزء من الصفر عملية طويلة وبطيئة. نحن نعرض في دراستنا هذه طريقة جديدة قد تعجل بشكل كبير إنتاج واختبار الأجزاء البيولوجية. تتكون الأجزاء من أجزاء من الحمض النووي (دي إن آيه) تمت اعادة هندستها من قبل العلماء ووضعها في خلايا لصنع مصنع بيولوجي منها. لاتزال هناك عقبات رئيسية في علم الاحياء التركيبية ألا وهي عدم وجود أجزاء لبناء أنواع جديدة من المصانع البيولوجية. ولبناء أجزاء باستخدام الطريقة الحالية التي تستغرق وقتاً طويلاً, كان على العلماء إعادة هندسة الحمض النووي في خلية ومراقبة كيفية عملها. إذا عملت وفق مواصفاتها فيتم تخزين مواصفات الأجزاء في سجل خاص.

أما الآن, فقد وضع علماء إمبريال كولج لندن وسيلة تتميز ذات سرعة أكبر لتلغي بذلك الحاجة إلى إعادة هندسة الخلية في كل مرة نريد جزءاً جديداً. ويقول الفريق, هذه الوسيلة قد تنتج قواعد بيانات جديدة وضخمة تمتاز بمكونات متاحة وسهلة المتناول من أجل استخدامها لبناء مصانع بيولوجية أكثر تطوراً

ويقول جيمس تشابل, المؤلف المشارك من مركز علم الأحياء التركيبية والابتكارات في كلية امبريال: الأهداف الرئيسية في البيولوجيا التركيبية هي خلق صناعة رائجة لطرقنا المبتكرة لتصنيع هذه المصانع البيولووجية بكميات ضخمة على نفس المستوى التي يقوم فيه مصنعي السيارات بانتاج سياراتهم في خطوط انتاج وتج��يع. وبهذا يمكن إتاحة المجال لهذا الحقل من العلوم ويمكننا من تطوير أجهزة أكثر تطورا يمكن استخدامها لتحسين العديد من جوانب المجتمع. من المثير أن أبحاثنا تأخدنا خطوة أقرب الى هذا الواقع موفرةً بذلك وسيلة أسرع لتطوير أجزاء جديدة عند إعادة هندسة خلية, يتم تشفير الرسائل في الحمض النووي عن طريق “مرسال الحمض الريبي النووي” (إم-آر إن آيه) لمصانع إنتاج الخلية .التي تسمى الريبوسومات. تترجم هذه الريبوسومات المعلومات الجينية إلى أوامر للخلية لأداء وظائف معينة. على سبيل المثال, بمقدور العلماء الآن اعادة هندسة الخلية لتصبح مصانع متعقبة للعدوى وذلك بانتاج بروتين يمكنه التقاط إشارات كيميائية من البكتيريا المسببة لأمراض بشرية ثم يقوم بتغيير اللون للإخبار بوجودهم.

في هذه الدراسة, قام الباحثون من امبريال كولج للمرة الأولى بتطبيق نفس الطريقة في أنابيب اختبار خارج الخلية. هذا يتضمن استخراج العضيات المسؤولة عن انتاج البروتينات ومرسال الحمض الريبي النووي من الخلية ووضعها في الأنبوب مع تزويدها بالطاقة والبنية الأساسية التي تضمن استمرارية عملها خارج الخلية. بعد ذالك يقوم الفريق بإضافة حمضهم النووي المعاد برمجته للمحلول ومراقبة عمله.

ما يتميز به هذا الاسلوب هو أن العلماء يمكنهم انتاج لترات من هذه البيئة شبه-الخلوية بحيث يمكن اختبار أكثر من حمض نووي معاد برمجته في نفس الوقت، ما يسرع عملية إنتاج الأجزاء.

المرحلة التالية من هذا البحث هو التوسع في أنواع الأجزاء والاجهزة التي يمكن تطويرها باستخدام نفس الاسلوب. كما أنهم ينوون تطوير طريقة جديدة يستخدمون فيها الروبوتات لتسريع الإنتاج وجعل العملية آلية.

ويقول الاستاذ ريتشارد كتني, المدير المشارك لمركز البيولوجيا التركيبية والابتكار في إمبريال كولج في لندن: ” ترى الحكومة البريطانية البيولوجيا التركيبية كمجال له القدرة على خلق صناعات جديدة وتوفير فرص للعمل لصالح الاقتصاد البريطاني. هذا العمل يعتبر جزءاً من برنامج بحثي أعرض وأوسع داخل المركز لتطوير تقنية بالإمكان استخدامها عبر مجموعة من التطبيقات الصناعية.”
