2026 Ford Mustang Raptor

From the May 2023 issue of Car and Driver. What follows is some inside info, rumor, and speculation about a Raptorized Mustang.

This infatuation with turning everything into an off-roader has gone off the trails. Porsche turned the iconic 911 into the dirt-spewing Dakar. Lamborghini is ready to get down and dirty, not with the Urus SUV, but with the 602-hp Huracán Sterrato. Even Toyota's Sienna Woodland Edition, a lifted minivan, has found a new way to make kids regurgitate chicken nuggets. Now Ford is adding to the craze.

Deep within Ford's Dearborn headquarters, there's a mindset to Raptorize everything. Going full desert racer with the F-150 was the godfather of the concept. The Bronco Raptor that followed was a no-brainer. That the philosophy trickles down to the upcoming Ranger Raptor makes sense. Even giving the treatment to the Explorer and Expedition doesn't seem far off. But to turn the Mustang into a trail-prepped coupe seems like a stretch. Or is it?

We should've seen this coming years ago when we noticed splined front hubs on the sixth-generation Mustang. Naturally, we anticipated all-wheel drive in the future to enable blistering acceleration, not to turn the backwoods into rally circuits.

Ford to tap Daniel Ricciardo connection in the future

Australian Formula One ace Daniel Ricciardo – who is taking a year away from racing as he returns to Red Bull in a support role after a dismal two years at the struggling McLaren outfit – could put his name to future Ford Performance models.

Ford recently signed on as Red Bull Racing's engine supplier from 2026, but the two entities have already begun flaunting their new partnership.

Ricciardo last week helped Ford announce the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV is coming to Australia, in the lead-up to last weekend's F1 Grand Prix in Melbourne.

Now Ford executives are looking at ways to further leverage the new relationship.

"We love Dan, I think he brings something to the brand," a spokesperson for Ford Australia told media at the Mustang Mach-E event.

"So just like today, we'll be using him as we think is appropriate."

Representatives for Ford Australia didn't say whether the company was working on a Ricciardo special edition vehicle, however Ricciardo is known to be a big fan of his Ford F-150 Raptor pick-up, which he keeps at his home in California.

"I actually bought the Raptor before I bought a house [there]," he told US website The Drive in February 2023.

"Since I was young I loved them. We couldn't get the Raptors in Australia and me and my friends just love utes and trucks and hoped one day we could get one."

While the Red Bull Racing reserve driver is best known for cutting laps in Formula One cars, Ford could exploit its partnership with the team to create a special edition vehicle with Daniel Ricciardo's name on it.

"It's great because it's a strategic, technical relationship and partnership between Ford and Red Bull," Ford Australia boss Andrew Birkic told media last week.

"He's just so personable – we were chatting in the car like he was one of my mates. Very personable, very approachable. And we're thrilled that he could spend some time with us."

14 years ago, an experimental prototype (T-50-1) of an aircraft created under the "Prospective Frontline Aviation Airborne Complex" program (PAK FA), made its first flight on January 29, 2010. In the last 14 years, the fifth-generation fighter, which became Su-57, has passed almost all the necessary tests and entered service in the Russian Aerospace Forces. But the development has been slow.

The Su-57 is a fifth-generation multifunctional fighter developed by the Sukhoi Company of Russia (part of United Aircraft Corporation). It was designed to compete with other fifth-generation fighters, such as the F-22 Raptor. The aircraft received several designations during the years of development. Sukhoi used the alphanumeric index "owner" "T-50". Government agencies mention it more often in the context of the PAK FA program (Perspektivny Aviatsionny Kompleks Frontovoy Aviatsii). The Ministry of Defense assigned it the designation Su-57, in fact, the military speaks of "an aircraft with its original appearance" (with engines "Product 117") and "aircraft with second stage engine" ("Product 30′′). NATO gave the codename Felon.

A total of ten T-50 flight prototypes and three of static ground tests were built for preliminary flight tests and state tests.

Since his first flight in 2010 and after going through several rounds of testing and development, he entered service in the Russian Air Force on December 25, 2020 in one of the aviation regiments of the Southern Military District, at Lipetsk Air Base. This initial production batch would be used for military evaluation, tactical development and crew conversion training. The first fully operational Su-57 regiment of 24 aircraft is expected to be equipped by 2025

According to several reports, the unit cost of the Su-57 is estimated at about 40-50 million dollars per aircraft. This makes it significantly cheaper than other fifth-generation fighters, such as the F-35 and F-22, which cost about $80-100 million and $150-200 million per aircraft, respectively.

Although it was put into service by the Russian Air Force in 2020 and, although it has participated in a series of military exercises and test flights, it has not yet been officially used in real combat. However, there have been reports from the United Kingdom intelligence where it was reported that Russia used the Su-57 against Ukraine in 2023.

The Russian Air Force has so far received 22 Su-57 fighters, with plans to acquire additional units in the coming years. These aircraft are part of a larger order of 76 Su-57 announced by the Russian government in 2018.

It is worth mentioning that the production of the Su-57 has been somewhat slow due to delays in the development of the aircraft and problems with its engines, among other factors. However, the Russian government stated that it plans to accelerate the production of the Su-57 in the coming years, with the aim of putting in the field a greater number of these advanced fighters in the Russian Air Force.

In the realm of automotive audacity, one man has taken the concept of off-roading to a whole new level. Meet Matt Brown, better known as SuperfastMatt, a YouTuber with a penchant for pushing boundaries. His latest creation? An off-road Dodge Viper.

The Unlikely Marriage: Viper Meets Desert

The idea of mixing high end sports car with off-roading is nothing new, such as the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, and Porsche 911 Dakar. A Dodge Viper, – an 8.0-liter V10-powered beast, is not the obvious choice. But somehow he has made the concept work.

The Birth of a Desert-Devouring Monster

Creating this off-road Viper took over a year of work. Here’s how he did it:

Custom Long-Travel Suspension: Bump stops and long travel suspension.

Jeep DNA: The rear axle and locking differential from a Jeep Wrangler found their way into the Viper’s underbelly, ensuring it could tackle rugged terrain.

Enormous All-Terrain Tires: Forget low-profile rubber; Matt slapped on massive all-terrain tires that could conquer sand, rocks, and anything else the desert threw at them.

Body Modifications: The Viper’s body underwent strategic surgery to accommodate those colossal tires. Underbody armor and improved approach and departure angles completed the transformation.

Desert Shakedown: Viper vs. Raptor

With the fundamentals in place, Matt took his creation to the desert for a shakedown run. Alongside him was a Ford F-150 Raptor, a worthy benchmark. Here’s what went down:

Doughnuts: Minimal effort for the Viper – rear-wheel drive, loose surface, and a cloud of dust. Hillclimbing: The Viper scrambled up steep, slippery hills, proving its mettle. Whoops: Those washboard ruts on dirt trails? The Viper danced through them. Jumps: Serious airtime – the Viper soared, except for the custom steering arms that need fine-tuning. Drag Race: Against the Raptor – a showdown that defies expectations. Plane Race: Because why not? The Viper’s audacity knows no bounds.

NORAD intercepts Russian aircraft during military exercise in Alaska

The Alaska Region of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) detected, tracked, positively identified and intercepted six Russian aircraft operating in and near the Alaska Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on May 11, 2023 during the execution of a military exercise with several countries.

Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter American or Canadian sovereign airspace. These flights took place while several planned large-scale U.S. military training exercises are underway in Alaska.

Exercise Northern Edge 23 is underway in Alaska, a huge multinational exercise with the U.S., UK and Australian military led by the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Thousands of U.S. military personnel, five ships and more than 150 aircraft are participating, according to authorities. The approximately two-week exercise began on May 4.

The Russian aircraft that flew near Alaska were Tu-95 bombers, Il-78 tankers and Su-35 fighters.

Among the NORAD aircraft were F-16 and F-22 fighters, KC-135 Stratotankers refuelers and early air alert and E-3 AWACS control aircraft.

NORAD did not detail how many of each type of aircraft - Russian or American - were involved in the episode, or whether the American aircraft that performed the interception are regularly assigned to NORAD.

This Russian activity in the North American ADIZ occurs regularly and is not seen as a threat. NORAD tracks and positively identifies all military aircraft entering ADIZ, routinely monitors aircraft movements and, as necessary, escorts them out of ADIZ.

ADIZ serves as an early warning buffer zone beyond the U.S. airspace.

Since Russia resumed long-range aviation activity outside the area in 2007, NORAD has recorded an annual average of approximately six to seven interceptions of Russian military aircraft in ADIZ. These numbers have varied every year, from 15 to zero.

NORAD employs a layered defense network of satellites, ground radars, aerial radars and fighters to track and identify aircraft and report appropriate actions.
