Mom is the dark pole, Dad is the light pole
November 21, 1987
Late. At Chuck's in Sacramento.
Dwaine is just back from his waiter job at a Sacramento restaurant. He says Saturday diners are bad tippers. They tip 12% only. Dwaine “People go out to eat on Saturday night who can’t afford it”.
Chuck and I talked the good talk. I said Mom talked suicide last night. He said he still has his Mom’s suicide note. It said, briefly, “Don’t let my decision prevent you from continuing on with your life." She was gnarled in pain with arthritis and overdosed on Seconal and died.
Nebraska lost to Oklahoma 17-7. Dad and the Nebraska gang were in mourning. Two of my dad's college friends , their wives, my parents and a young Air Force couple, Mark and Melisa, were there at Mom and Dad’s house. Brought Mom back to life.
Mom is the dark pole. She wishes to sleep and never wake up
Dad is the lite pole. He wishes to wake and never sleep.
Pull towards center
( I am posting a photo of the journal page that includes a chart illustrating my dark pole, lite pole pull to center statement above.)
End of entry
Note: 4/29/2024
This entry was written the day after the entry included in my 4/28/2024 blog in which my Mother said she wished her life would end.
The next day, Saturday November 21, I drove up to Sacramento to stay with my gay friends Chuck and Dwaine. My parents had a Nebraska football party back at their house in Atwater that day. Both my parents attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. They and their friends at the house that day were big Nebraska fans. The party helped pull Mom out of the dark place she had been in the night before..
Chuck's Mom did kill herself , however. I’m not sure how old Chuck was when she killed herself, but, I think he was a young boy.
!In 1987, Castle Air Force base was located close to Atwater. The Air Force couple at the party probably were associated Wirth the base. The base has since closed down.
Whereas my Mother wanted to die, my father never wanted to die. At the end of his life, he lingered along time close to death. We were encouraging him to let go. When he finally did die, my mother and I were there with him. He died in 2000.

Nebraska Football: Are You Not Entertained, Husker Fan?
Russell Crowe in Gladiator (2000) Hey, Nebraska’s 5-1, and has won two straight. Doesn’t feel like it, does it Husker fan? That’s understandable. The last two games have been, put charitably, not the most aesthetically pleasing. Nebraska’s first half on the road at Purdue definitely was a bucket of cold water on any excitement or enthusiasm on the thought of that mythical corner being turned.…

There Are Giants In These Days
October 17, 1908
The Minnesota Gopher looks up at the Giant Nebraska and Ames football players.
The caption reads "The gopher having passed the pumpkin-rollers is now comforted by the cornhuskers."
A week after having beaten the Iowa State football team in Minneapolis, the Golden Gophers were faced the following week by the tough University of Nebraska Cornhuskers, who at that time had beaten their previous three opponents by a combined score of 83-5.

Nebraska Football: Stop it, Husker fan!
I know, I know. Here we go again. We’ve seen this movie. I get it. After three glorious weeks, including what felt like a demon-exorcising win over Colorado, Memorial Stadium really felt like a party on Friday night facing Illinois. Unfortunately (regardless of what Pitbull says), parties do come to an end. And Nebraska’s party ended with what seemed like the return of all the things that have…
