Shape-changing polymer resembles animal movements with temperature shifts
A team of scientists has created a new shape-changing polymer that could transform how future soft materials are constructed. Made using a material called a liquid crystalline elastomer (LCE), a soft rubber-like material that can be stimulated by external forces like light or heat, the polymer is so versatile that it can move in several directions. Its behavior, which resembles the movements of animals in nature, includes being able to twist, tilt left and right, shrink and expand, said Xiaoguang Wang, co-author of the study and an assistant professor in chemical and biomolecular engineering at The Ohio State University. "Liquid crystals are materials that have very unique characteristics and properties that other materials cannot normally achieve," said Wang. "They're fascinating to work with."

Since my real name isn't on here, I'd like to say something. I was at the Ohio State University protest for Palestine last night, and the way police treated us was atrocious.
They stayed at a distance until the Isha prayer. This prayer must be said at 9:45 every day. Police chose this moment to start arresting and hurting people. This is when everyone was most vulnerable.
Every protester was completely peaceful. We were shouting "Let Them Pray" to the officers, and they replied with ignorance. I was lucky I didn't get arrested, but I know people who did. I am bruised, and the wind was knocked out of me.
This is all because we don't support a genocide and want to make a change. OSU made up a curfew (that has never existed) and said we were trespassing. Many of us live there.
Bottom line: keep going. Make the world see that you care.

Researchers have developed a battery that can convert nuclear energy into electricity via light emission, a new study suggests. Nuclear power plants, which generate about 20% of all electricity produced in the United States, produce almost no greenhouse gas emissions. However, these systems do create radioactive waste, which can be dangerous to human health and the environment. Safely disposing of this waste can be challenging. Using a combination of scintillator crystals, high-density materials that emit light when they absorb radiation, and solar cells, the team, led by researchers from The Ohio State University, demonstrated that ambient gamma radiation could be harvested to produce a strong enough electric output to power microelectronics, like microchips.

Nearly 10 years ago the Ohio State Buckeyes became Champions and in celebration I made this quick little animated GIF. All these years later it lives on in phone GIF searches which I'm strangely proud of. That being said. Buckeye Nation deserves a better version. So after all this time I've got an update!! Take it. Share it. Post it. (please don't crop) And hopefully this one will outlast the original. Go Bucks!

Saturday, August 17, 2024 - Tim Walz
This is the 'official' schedule of Tim Walz today on the campaign trail. With additional details for press purposes. Additionally, the governor is traveling with the Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg on this trip. This will help him gain valuable insights into the region while traveling and meeting with voters.
Governor Walz is taking part in three events again today across the State of Ohio. This is a key region for the campaign and therefore we are making a significant time investment in all communities across Ohio.
Event #1 (Mansfield, OH) Event Location: The Ohio State University at Mansfield Event Type: Educators' Breakfast with Discussion Event Time: 9:00 - 11:30 ET *Note this event has a target audience of 150 attendees who are school district superintendents and principals as well as teachers who have completed 20 years of service. These educators will come from across the state!
Event #2 (Columbus, OH) Event Location: Hotel LeVeque Event Type: Lunch with Ohio State Democratic Assembly-members and senators Event Time: 13:00 - 15:00 ET
Event #3 (Dayton, OH) Event Location: University of Dayton Event Type: Get Out the Vote Event Time: 18:00 - 21:00 ET
Mansfield, OH Governor Walz continues to focus on these types of events when possible. He is very excited to discuss the state of education in Ohio with those on the frontlines. We've had a few librarians from schools also say they can join, which the Governor is very excited about, especially as book-banning continues to gain in popularity across the country. This concerning phenomenon will be of paramount importance for the Harris-Walz administration.
Columbus, OH All seven senators have RSVPed and 20 of the 32 assembly members have RSVPed to join us for lunch. We are excited to focus on how we can support the state of Ohio and learn how we can work to gain ground with voters in the state. We also want this session to leave time for discussion of the concerning policies that are coming out of the republican-controlled chambers. Lastly, a few Columbus and Cincinnati city officials will join us.
Dayton, OH Secretary Buttigieg will be kicking-off a door knocking campaign in the suburbs of Columbus, while Governor Walz will be on-campus at the University of Dayton. He will be once again talking with students about registering to vote, voting rights, and mail-in ballot options. He is hoping to also recruit some new Social Media ambassadors for the campaign during this stop.

feeling the need to post again about this. i'm standing with every single person who is protesting for palestine right now. especially all the people at these universities setting up encampments and having guns and police brigades pointed towards them. these are PEACEFUL protests and should not be threatened with tear gas, force, or even snipers pointed at them. palestine needs our voices more than ever. we're nearing 50K marytered palestinians when there shouldn't have even been 1.
if you personally cannot protest in public for whatever reason it may be, at least voice your support for protesters who are and also voice your support for palestinians. they need your voice. their voices are getting silences constantly online whether through suppression or the IOF marytering them along with everyone else.
i stand with every palestinian in the world. i stand with every protester in the world speaking for palestinians.
FROM THE RIVER TO THE SEA, PALESTINE WILL BE FREE!!!!!

Scientists develop novel method for strengthening PVC products
Researchers have developed a way to make one type of plastic material more durable and less likely to shed dangerous microplastics. Their study has identified a secure way to attach chemical additives to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The work is published in the journal Chem. Found in everything from toys, construction supplies and medical packaging, PVC plastics currently rank third among the most used plastics worldwide. Despite its widespread use, pure PVC is brittle and sensitive to heat, and manufacturers can only utilize it after stabilizing its properties with other chemicals. However, these additives, or plasticizers, are only a short-term fix for stabilizing PVC. Over time, plasticizers leach from the plastics, which allows the material to deteriorate into potentially hazardous organics and microplastics. Now, a team led by Christo Sevov, the principal investigator of the study and an associate professor in chemistry and biochemistry at The Ohio State University, has found that using electricity to permanently affix those chemical additives can prevent such unwanted reactions.
