5 Tips for Reducing Cholesterol Without Medication
This article is originally published on Freedom from Diabetes website, available here. Cholesterol is a waxy-textured substance produced by the body to perform many essential functions, for instance: to make cell membranes, produce certain hormones, and Vitamin D. But like so many good things, cholesterol too is harmful in excess.
Tumblr media
There are two types of Cholesterol
High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) and 2. Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL).
HDL is called as a good cholesterol because it carries cholesterol to your liver, where it is removed as waste before it can build up in your body.
LDL carries cholesterol directly to your arteries, where it accumulates and forms hard deposits on arterial walls, hardening and narrowing the arteries, hence its description as “bad” cholesterol.
Natural ways to reduce cholesterol
1) Maintain your diet: Unhealthy food, unhealthy diet are the main reasons of high cholesterol. High nitrites, salt, sugar, trans fats, saturated fat, animal dairy, and dairy products, these items are responsible for the rising incidences of cholesterol-related problems. The best thing you can do for your health which is healthy diet and avoid food containing saturated and trans fats.
2)Exercise: Exercise is also benefecial for lowering BP to reducing blood glucose levels. We have to do daily exercise to keep yourself healthy. Walking is also good exercise, try to add a mix of cardio, resistance, and flexibility exercises into your routine. There are other exercise also good for health, jogging, swimming, dancing, running etc.
3)Lose weight:For every extra pound you carry, your body produces a couple of extra milligrams of cholesterol. Every Day! Being overweight affects the way your body produces and uses lipoproteins and triglycerides. Triglycerides are a lipid (fatty substance) your body needs but only in tiny amounts.
Excessive triglycerides increase the amount of free fatty acids carried to the liver; it can make you insulin resistant (which further increases the free fatty acids in your liver) and it increases inflammation in the body, which affects the body’s ability to produce and manage good cholesterol—HDL.
Introducing healthy, nutrient-dense foods into your diet, cutting out excessively salty, sweet, and oily foods, portion control and exercise will help you reduce your body weight and improve your cholesterol levels.
4)Natural Supplements: Natural supplements include Garlic, Flax seeds, Soluble Fiber. Garlic has gastronomic feature, great cholesterol buster. If you consume garlic regularly its helpful in lower BP, and cholesterol levels. Flax seeds has cholesterol-busting properties is Omega-3 Fatty Acid, an alpha-linoleic acid (ALA) that is very good for heart health. Soluble fiber is the medium your body uses to improve its digestive function.
5)Stop Smoking: Smoking is universally known to be harmful to your health, but yet many peoples still do it. This isn't good, and it's important to stop smoking as soon as possible. And if you’re suffering from cholesterol problems, it’s worse, it hits you with a double whammy. Another negative factor is that smoking damages the blood vessel lining, which further increases the risk of heart attacks and stroke.
Cholesterol is both good and bad. LDL, aka, bad cholesterol leads to arterial plaque, hardening, and narrowing of the arteries, with the risk of heart attack and stroke. HDL, aka, good cholesterol is carried to the liver where it is processed and removed from the blood. The body produces sufficient cholesterol for its own needs. When we adopt unhealthy lifestyle habits—unhealthy diets, insufficient exercise, ignoring stress—we raise cholesterol levels in our own bodies. To read more about this, please visit our Article. weed smoking! joel x dispensary shop! reader preview 🍃🔥💨💨💨
Tumblr media
A/N: A little taste for you guys! I am very excited at this new idea, especially because I am co-writing this with the actual love of my life @serenaxpedro!!!
So excited to see where it will go and excited to see our grumpy old peepaw finally kick back and relax with some alternate pain management methods. He's not gonna be happy about it at first, but it's going to turn out so good 🤓. Moodboard art also by @serenaxpedro (please go check out her delicious writing as well, she's got some YUMMY Joel fic's posted 🫠)
sneak peak under the cut, feel free to comment or reblog if you want more!
“The side effects from an over the counter painkiller could spike your cholesterol even higher, which is what we do not want,” the doctor continues, unaware of Joel’s steadily boiling frustration. “Which is why I wanted to suggest an alternate method for pain management, something more natural.”
For fucks sake.
He thought this would be a simple appointment. Show up, get a new prescription for whatever magic pills can help this pain in his back to dissipate, and go home. Not look into ‘alternative methods’ that undoubtedly wouldn’t work.
Joel’s gaze narrows and he huffs, leaning back in his seat. “Natural? Like what, seeing one of those hokey practitioners that read your energies and use natural herb remedies and all that crap?”
“Not quite that per say but it is natural medicine. Medical marijuana to be exact.”
Joel’s mouth goes dry as his jaw hangs open. Weed? Nope. Not the solution he was looking for.
Maybe what he should be on the market for is a new doctor at this point.
“Uh listen, I appreciate the suggestion doc, but I don’t think that’s gonna help me at this point. I don’t do that kinda stuff,” he waves his hand dismissively. “If it gets to that point I’ll crack open a beer.” Joel leans forward in his seat and he starts to get up.
“Just a second, hold on. At least let me write you a prescription for it today and you can choose whether or not you want to get it filled at a dispensary.”
“I don’t think-” Joel continues to protest but the doctor cuts him off.
“It’s medicinal marijuana Joel,” the doctor says plainly, as if that’s supposed to calm his nerves. “It has opiate-like properties, which means it’s similar to a pain killer, just without all the usual side effects that come with over the counter medicine. Lots of individuals, older and younger,” the doctor pointedly emphasizes, “use it to help with aches, pain, anxiety, even mental health issues. Not just the physical.”
Joel continues to eye the doctor warily, his spine now stiff as he sits up in the chair. Even now, he can feel his body protesting his upright position, the inkling of that pinched phantom pain coming back slightly.
“Does it get you high?” he asks the older man.
Aside from the stories he’s heard, he’s had his fair share of buddies who used to toke up back in the day. Hell, they didn’t even know what was in it back then, they just smoked as a distraction, something fun to do, to take the edge off after a long day's work. Joel tried it once and didn’t like it at all. The hazy, fuzzy feeling not mixing well with his frayed nerves, all glassy eyed and out of touch with his body and his mind. No, he would much rather crack open a beer or pour himself a whiskey neat to kick back and relax when he was stressed.
“Not necessarily, some strains, or some kinds of weed have a higher content of THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive component that makes you feel high or ‘out of it,”’ the doctor explains with finger quotes. “Some medicinal marijuana are low in THC but high in CBD, the relaxing component of marijuana. CBD acts as a relaxer, and it can ease physical pain. So depending on what you’re comfortable with, you can opt for the kinds that have a high CBD but low THC content, which will help with any pain issues, without causing you to experience the high.”
Joel’s mind whirls around the acronyms. THC, CBD, ABC.
Christ.
Does it have to be this fucking complicated?

Honey Fermented Garlic
It’s been a running joke in my friend group that I’m probably a vampire (due to long standing dark color patterns in my wardrobe and pale skin) but my love of garlic is one of my biggest defender points to my humanity.
Honey fermented garlic is one of those beloved folk recipes that are especially amazing to have during cold and flu season. It’s quite a simple recipe that combines two very common kitchen items into a lovely blend of flavors and benefits.
Tumblr media
Why Make Honey Fermented Garlic?
Honey is already well known as a natural home remedy for sore throats and pesky allergies.
Garlic has a long list of medicinal benefits. Ingesting garlic regularly is able to reduce your chances of getting sick, and beyond that it naturally reduces blood pressure and lowers cholesterol.
By mixing honey and garlic together in this lovely little concoction, you not only make it more digestible through fermentation but you’re also combining two potent natural medicinals into one!
Is It Safe?
Lactobacillus, yeast, and acetic acid bacteria are completely safe!
With lacto-fermentation, it’s nearly impossible to make something that will cause bodily harm upon ingestion, due to the bacteria quickly being able to outcompete pretty much everything else and acidify the mixture to prevent spoilage.
Do not use this remedy, or any remedy containing honey with children under 2 years old. A child at this age contains stomach acid that isn’t fully developed yet, and their stomach acts as a low acid environment.
Instructions:
Peel the garlic, trimming it to remove any discolored parts
Press the garlic clove with the side of a knife to gently bruise it
Optional: Once the garlic is in the jar, add about 2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar to the jar at this point Give the jar a quick shake to coat the garlic cloves with cider vinegar.
Ensures that the surface of the garlic starts acidic, which is a precaution against botulism (not very likely, but if you want to be extra careful here’s a step!)
Fill the jar about 1/2 to 2/3 of the way with garlic, then top it off with honey to within an inch of the lid.
Be sure to leave space at the top, as the mixture will bubble as it ferments and you don’t want it to overflow
Cover the jar with a lid and flip it a few times to distribute the honey. Loosen the lid so gasses can escape during fermentation
Bubbles begin to form in the honey after about 24 - 48 hours. After about 3 to 5 days, the garlic should be well fermented. If you’ve made it in the refrigerator, it will take about 2 - 3 weeks for the fermentation process to complete.

The Hidden Benefits of Eating CHILLI You Never Knew Existed 🌶️
Chillies, often seen as just a way to spice up your food, are actually packed with amazing health benefits that many people overlook. These fiery little peppers are more than just heat; they’re a powerhouse of nutrients that can positively impact your body and mind. Let's dive into the hidden benefits of eating chilli that you might not know about!
Boosts Metabolism 🔥 Chillies contain a compound called capsaicin, which is responsible for their heat. Capsaicin helps boost your metabolism by increasing the rate at which your body burns fat. Regular consumption can assist in weight management and fat loss.
Reduces Inflammation 🌿 Capsaicin also has anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce inflammation in your body. This makes chilli a potential natural remedy for conditions like arthritis and muscle pain.
Promotes Heart Health ❤️ Studies have shown that eating chillies can help reduce blood cholesterol, triglycerides, and platelet aggregation. This means that consuming chillies may lower the risk of heart disease and promote overall cardiovascular health.
Improves Digestion 🌱 Contrary to popular belief, chilli peppers can actually improve digestion by stimulating gastric juices, which help in breaking down food. It also helps in preventing acid reflux by regulating the flow of digestive acids.
Rich in Vitamins and Antioxidants 💥 Chillies are loaded with vitamins, especially Vitamin C, which is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system. Additionally, they are packed with antioxidants, which help fight free radicals in the body and reduce the risk of diseases like cancer.
Natural Pain Relief 🌟 Capsaicin in chillies is known to act as a natural pain reliever. It’s used in many topical creams to relieve pain from conditions like arthritis, muscle strains, and joint pain. It works by desensitizing pain receptors in the area.
Elevates Mood 😊 Eating chillies triggers the release of endorphins, the "feel-good" hormones, which can help reduce stress and boost your mood. This makes chilli a great food for keeping anxiety and depression at bay.
Next time you add some chilli to your meal, remember that it’s not just about the flavour—it’s also about giving your body a boost in health! 🌶️💪
